In which John Green teaches you about China's Revolutions. While the rest of the world was off having a couple of World Wars, China was busily uprooting the dynastic system that had ruled there for millennia. Most revolutions have some degree of tumult associated with them, but China's 20th century revolutions were REALLY disruptive. In 1911 and 1912, Chinese nationalists brought 3000 years of dynastic rule to an end. China plunged into chaos as warlords staked out regions of the country for themselves. The nationalists and communists joined forces briefly to bring the nation back together under the Chinese Republic, and then they quickly split and started fighting the Chinese Civil War. The fight between nationalists and communists went on for decades, and was interrupted by an alliance to fight the invading Japanese during World War II. After the World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War was back on. Mao and the communists were ultimately victorious, and Chiang Kai-Shek ended up in Taiwan. And then it got weird. Mao spent years repeatedly trying to purify the Communist Party and build up the new People's Republic of China with Rectifications, Anti Campaigns, Five Year Plans. the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. These had mixed results, to say the least. John will cover all this and more in this week's Crash Course World History.

This restaurant name is 人民食堂 "Renmin shitang", which means People's cafeteria, and is all in old Chinese communist style interior. It's a true sight to see. The servers are all wearing old Chinese communism uniforms and the food was delicious to say the least!

What is in store for the future of China and the Chinese Communist Party? This film is a 1967 documentary written by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Theodore H. White. It attempts to analyze the Anti-Western sentiment in China from the official American's perspective, covering 170 years of China's history, from Boxer Rebellion of the Qing Dynasty to Cultural Revolution.
While the film won an Emmy Award in the documentary category soon after its release, contemporary critics remarked that White never attempted to take on board the Chinese viewpoint. Furthermore, there were unconfirmed rumours that the CIA was involved in the film's making.

My thoughts and reflections after visiting Xiamen, China in March 2014. Please note that this is not designed to be a comprehensive overview of the Chinese economic system. Many important facts were omitted.
Most of the communist policies in the mid-1900s ended in disaster. The creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and freer markets in 1979 significantly improved China's economy. Although run by the Communist Party, today's China is definitely a mixed economy. Like I said in the video, don't assume that everything is perfect. Civil liberties are lacking and there are still misguided government polices. The most obvious is the growing housing bubble.
I'm not sure where China will go in the future, but moving toward freer markets is a step in the right direction. Central planning was getting them nowhere.

China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The PRC is a one-party state governed by the Communist Party, with its seat of government in the capital city of Beijing. Covering approximately 9.6 million square kilometers, China is the world's second-largest country by land area, and either the third or fourth-largest by total area, depending on the method of measurement. China's landscape is vast and diverse, ranging from forest steppes and the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts in the arid north to subtropical forests in the wetter south. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

White. It attempts to analyze the Anti-Western sentiment in China from the official American's perspective, covering 170 years of China's history, from Boxer Rebellion of the Qing Dynasty to Cultural Revolution. While the film won an Emmy Award in the documentary category soon after its release, contemporary critics remarked that White never attempted to take on board the Chinese viewpoint. My thoughts and reflections after visiting Xiamen, China in March 2014. Please note that this is not designed to be a comprehensive overview of the Chinese economic system. Many important facts were omitted. Most of the communist policies in the mid-1900s ended in disaster. The creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and freer markets in 1979 significantly improved China's economy. Although run by the Communist Party, today's China is definitely a mixed economy. Like I said in the video, don't assume that everything is perfect. Civil liberties are lacking and there are still misguided government polices. The most obvious is the growing housing bubble. I'm not sure where China will go in the future, but moving toward freer markets is a step in the right direction. Central planning was getting them nowhere.

My thoughts and reflections after visiting Xiamen, China in March 2014. Please note that this is not designed to be a comprehensive overview of the Chinese economic system. Many important facts were omitted. Most of the communist policies in the mid-1900s ended in disaster. The creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and freer markets in 1979 significantly improved China's economy. Although run by the Communist Party, today's China is definitely a mixed economy. Like I said in the video, don't assume that everything is perfect. Civil liberties are lacking and there are still misguided government polices. The most obvious is the growing housing bubble. I'm not sure where China will go in the future, but moving toward freer markets is a step in the right direction. Central planning ...

After the World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War was back on. Mao and the communists were ultimately victorious, and Chiang Kai-Shek ended up in Taiwan. And then it got weird. Mao spent years repeatedly trying to purify the Communist Party and build up the new People's Republic of China with Rectifications, Anti Campaigns, Five Year Plans. the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. These had mixed results, to say the least. John will cover all this and more in this week's Crash Course World History.

This restaurant name is 人民食堂 "Renmin shitang", which means People's cafeteria, and is all in old Chinese communist style interior. It's a true sight to see. The servers are all wearing old Chinese communism uniforms and the food was delicious to say the least!

My thoughts and reflections after visiting Xiamen, China in March 2014. Please note that this is not designed to be a comprehensive overview of the Chinese economic system. Many important facts were omitted.
Most of the communist policies in the mid-1900s ended in disaster. The creation of Special Economic Zones (SEZs) and freer markets in 1979 significantly improved China's economy. Although run by the Communist Party, today's China is definitely a mixed economy. Like I said in the video, don't assume that everything is perfect. Civil liberties are lacking and there are still misguided government polices. The most obvious is the growing housing bubble.
I'm not sure where China will go in the future, but moving toward freer markets is a step in the right direction. Central planning was getting them nowhere.

The revolution in China falters. Mao and his followers have completed the Long March, but local warlords are snapping at their heels. Meanwhile, Japanese imperial ambitions eye the area from their new Manchurian acquistions.
The Soviet Union has made amicable noises, but are they willing to enter the fray on Mao's behalf, and will it be enough to ensure Communist Chinese survival? If the Soviets do decide to intervene, will the West see their distraction and strike in a bid to destroy Communism once and for all?

Chinese People's Liberation Army is the armed forces of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the armed forces of the People's Republic of China. The PLA consists of five professional service branches: the Ground Force, Navy, Air Force, Rocket Force and the Strategic Support Force.
The PLA is the world's largest military force, with a strength of approximately 2,285,000 personnel, 0.18% of the country's population. In September 2015, Xi Jinping, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and the commander-in-chief of the PLA, announced a reduction of the number of military personnel by 300,000.The PLA's insignia consists of a roundel with a red star bearing the Chinese characters for Eight One, referring to the Nanchang Uprising which began on August 1, 1927.
The PLA is under the command of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the CPC. Following the principle of civilian control of the military, the commander in chief is the Chairman of the Central Military Commission (usually the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China as well as Paramount leader). The Ministry of National Defense, which operates under the State Council, does not exercise any authority over the PLA and is far less powerful than the CMC. A system of political officers embedded within the military ensures party authority over the armed forces so that the primary role of the Ministry of Defense is that of a liaison office with foreign militaries rather than a commanding authority. The political and military leadership have made a concerted effort to create a professional military force, the duties of which are restricted to national defence and to the provision of assistance in domestic economic construction and emergency relief. This conception of the role of the PLA requires the promotion of specialised officers who can understand modern weaponry and handle combined arms operations. Units around the country are assigned to one of five Theater commands by geographical location.
Military service is compulsory by law; however, compulsory military service in China has never been enforced due to large numbers of military and paramilitary personnel. In times of national emergency, the People's Armed Police and the People's Liberation Army Militia act as a reserve and support element for the PLAGF.

During the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), everything took a very long pause except constant class struggle and population growth. Inflation was zero and salary freezed for everyone. Education was badly damaged. Mao developed his fighting (or struggling) philosophy in his late years, as he said, "Fighting with heaven, fighting with earth, and fighting with human being, what a great pleasure!" China was isolated from the rest of the world and nobody knew the outside world at all.
