SOUNDBITE (English) David Guttenfelder, Chief Asia Photographer, The Associated Press: "You take a picture of someone riding a bike down the street or waiting for the bus in the morning, I mean, these are things everyone does everywhere in the world, so they are very universal. So people see that picture and they think 'Wow, that could be me, that could be me in a grocery store with my child, or me with my girlfriend riding my bike' and it really, sort of, bridges the differences between our two countries. Our countries have problems historically, but that doesn't mean that we can't relate to one another as people and so those kinds of very regular, everyday pictures are maybe the most powerful." 15. SOUNDBITE (English) Santiago Lyon, Director of Photography, The Associated Press: "I think they are very interesting pictures, they show a North Korean perspective on their own country and I think they are a nice counterpoint to our perspective on their country. The two perspectives balance each other out." 20. Pan from photo to people STORYLINE: An exhibit that opened on Thursday offered New Yorkers a rare glimpse of life inside North Korea, including children singing in a theatre, stark views of Pyongyang at dusk and North Koreans bowing before a monument of the nation's founder, Kim Il Sung. "Windows on North Korea: Photographs from the DPRK" is a joint exhibition by the Associated Press and the state-run Korean Central News Agency, and features a mix of archival and contemporary images. The show was timed to open before the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung on April 15 and comes two months after the AP expanded its operations in Pyongyang to include writers and photojournalists. The AP became the first international news organisation to have a full-time presence in the secretive communist country when it opened a video bureau in 2006. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the United States have never had formal diplomatic relations, and the two nations have experienced tensions over the years, particularly over Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions. Tensions have recently eased.
