Trust (business)

A trust or corporate trust is an American English term for a large business with significant market power. It is often used in a historical sense to refer to monopolies or near-monopolies in the United States during the Second Industrial Revolution in the 19th century and early 20th century.

History

Originally, the corporate trust was a legal device used to consolidate power in large American corporate enterprises. In January 1882, Samuel C. T. Dodd, Standard Oil’s General Solicitor, conceived of the corporate trust to help John D. Rockefeller consolidate his control over the many acquisitions of Standard Oil, which was already the largest corporation in the world. The Standard Oil Trust was formed pursuant to a "trust agreement" in which the individual shareholders of many separate corporations agreed to convey their shares to the trust; it ended up entirely owning 14 corporations and also exercised majority control over 26 others. Nine individuals held trust certificates and acted as the trust's board of trustees. Of course, one of those trustees was Rockefeller himself, who held 41% of the trust certificates; the next most powerful trustee only held about 12%. This kind of arrangement became popular and soon had many imitators.

Trust (British political party)

Trust was a minor political party in the United Kingdom formed on 26 March 2010 by Stuart Wheeler in the wake of the Westminster expenses scandal. It unsuccessfully fielded two candidates at the 2010 general election.

Both of the party's candidates were former Conservatives.

Stuart Wheeler, who contested the Sussex constituency of Bexhill and Battle, is a businessman who donated £5 million to the Conservatives in 2001. He was expelled from the Conservative Party for donating £100,000 to United Kingdom Independence Party in 2009. Wheeler claimed that his opponent in Bexhill and Battle, Gregory Barker MP, escaped criticism from David Cameron over his expenses as an ally of the Conservative Party leader. Barker called Wheeler's campaign "an attempt to cash in on genuine public concerns about the Parliamentary expenses scandal by peddling the most extraordinary untruths about my own Parliamentary claims and expenditure."

The party's other candidate was Douglas Taylor. Taylor had been Conservative candidate at the Western Isles in 2001, and in Perth and North Perthshire in 2005. Taylor stood again on the Trust Party ticket in Perth and North Perthshire.

Trust (electronics company)

Trust International B.V. is a privately held company headquartered in Dordrecht, the Netherlands. It is a manufacturer of value-for-money computer accessories that are marketed mostly at low and middle segment price levels. Trust International B.V. is an international company that is active in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America. It currently has 19 branches in Europe and Asia and employs around 250 people in total.

History

The company was founded in 1981 in the Netherlands under the name Aashima Technology B.V. and its core business was importing computer accessories, game consoles and video games. From 1985, the company started producing its own products branded as Trust. The business grew and so did the company. In 1988, the first foreign branch offices were opened in Germany, England, Italy and France. In the early nineties, Aashima Technology B.V. changed its name into Trust International B.V. in order to reinforce the Trust brand name internationally. Nowadays, Trust products can be found in more than 44 countries.

Sound & Color

Sound & Color is the second studio album by American rock band Alabama Shakes. It was released on April 21, 2015 via ATO Records, MapleMusic Recordings and Rough Trade Records.

The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in the U.S., giving the band their first chart-topper; globally, the album hit the top ten in Australia, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Sound & Color was a critical success and received six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. It spawned four singles; "Don't Wanna Fight" was the most successful, peaking at number two on Billboard's Adult Alternative Songs chart.

Background

Alabama Shakes began recording their second album in late 2013. The group listened to anything and everything for influence, without regard for its public reception in the end. They spent over a year in the studio, with no clear end-goal, as they had not written any new songs due to their exhaustive touring schedule.Sound & Color is steeped in several different genres, touching on shoegaze to bands such as MC5.

Gemini (1999 film)

Gemini (also known as Sōseiji) is a 1999 horror film by Shinya Tsukamoto, loosely based on an Edogawa Ranpo story, which pursues his theme of the brutally physical and animalistic side of human beings rearing its ugly head underneath a civilized veneer, present in previous films like Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) and Tokyo Fist (1995), in what is a new territory for Tsukamoto—a story set in the late Meiji era (1868–1912) with no stop-motion photography and no industrial setting.

Plot

Tokyo. 1910. Dr. Daitokuji Yukio (Masahiro Motoki), a former military doctor who has taken over a successful practice from his father and treats plague victims, is living a charmed life: he is a respected young doctor with a successful practice and Rin (Ryo), a beautiful wife. His only problem is that she suffers from amnesia, and her past is unknown.

However, things begin to fall apart. Both his parents die suddenly, killed by a mysterious stranger who looks just like him. His relationship with his wife worsens after he chooses to cure the mayor instead of destitute denizens of nearby ghettos. While isolated from his relatives, he one day faces the mysterious stranger who turns out to be his long-lost rejected twin, Sutekichi (again Motoki). Bent on revenge, Sutekichi throws him into the garden's well and takes over his life and his wife.

Gemini (DC Comics)

Gemini is a fictional character, a supervillain published by DC Comics. The character first appeared in Beast Boy #1 (January 2000), and was created by Geoff Johns, Ben Raab and Justiniano.

Fictional character biography

She is the daughter of Madame Rouge. In the Beast Boy mini-series, she sought revenge against Beast Boy for killing her mother, her insanity having twisted her mother's death as the deliberate fault of Doctor Caulder and Beast Boy when it was merely an accident. She attempted to frame Beast Boy for the murders of his former cast members in an old TV show. After being tracked down by Beast Boy, Gemini reveals the bound and gagged forms of Vicky Valiant and Tim Bender, two of Gar's old co-stars whom she intends to murder. She is thwarted by Beast Boy, Flamebird, and Nightwing (Nightwing having come to investigate the attacks, he saw through her attempt to impersonate Beast Boy as he attacked him when she failed to address Nightwing by his real name during their fight). Subsequently, she joined her mother's old group, the Brotherhood of Evil. Her first mission with them was an arms deal with the Penguin in Blüdhaven, but they were defeated by Batgirl.

Cable

An electrical cable is made of two or more wires running side by side and bonded, twisted, or braided together to form a single assembly, the ends of which can be connected to two devices, enabling the transfer of electrical signals from one device to the other. Cables are used for a wide range of purposes, and each must be tailored for that purpose. Cables are used extensively in electronic devices for power and signal circuits. Long-distance communication takes place over undersea cables. Power cables are used for bulk transmission of alternating and direct current power, especially using high-voltage cable. Electrical cables are extensively used in building wiring for lighting, power and control circuits permanently installed in buildings. Since all the circuit conductors required can be installed in a cable at one time, installation labor is saved compared to certain other wiring methods.

The term originally referred to a nautical line of specific length where multiple ropes, each laid clockwise, are then laid together anti-clockwise and shackled to produce a strong thick line, resistant to water absorption, that was used to anchor large ships. In mechanics, cables, otherwise known as wire ropes, are used for lifting, hauling, and towing or conveying force through tension. In electrical engineering cables are used to carry electric currents. An optical cable contains one or more optical fibers in a protective jacket that supports the fibers.
