When you've got 5-time Grammy winner Tommy LiPuma producing your album, you tend to think big. He's reached the pinnacle of success with artists like Barbara Streisand, Diana Krall, George Benson and Paul McCartney.
So trumpeter Dominick Farinacci called in the best in the business to help cut his album in studio at the Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland: drummer Steve Gadd, bassist Christian McBride, guitarist Dean Parks, pianist Larry Goldings, and engineer Al Schmitt.
CoolCleveland's Thomas Mulready was granted exclusive access inside the control room with LiPuma & Farinacci and they revealed their techniques for choosing material, working up arrangements and recording some of the best musicians to pick up an instrument.
Farinacci's eclectic new album will feature songs by Tom Waits, Gnarls Barkley, Cream, and more.

But even after a major $3 million donation to Cuyahoga Community College and seeing his name on the wall of the Center for Creative Arts, which will be named after him in a ceremony tomorrow, he retains his humility and sense of humor. Mi cobertura del Festival Internacional De Jazz De Montreal 2013, no fue tan amplia como en años anteriores. Dado a que este año quise disfrutar mas desde el punto de vista como audiencia y no como productor. Pero esto no significa que ha sido menos fructífero que antes.
El solo hecho de estar allí, es de por si un privilegio que a muy pocos les llega. Por ejemplo; compartir el honor de estar un momento en cámara, cara a cara con una de las grandes leyendas en la producción de la música norte Americana, como lo es Tommy Lipuma, es algo que en realidad no tiene precio.
Escuchar de sus propias palabras sobre sus comienzos e influencias en la música y su conexión con el jazz, es realmente un privilegio y desde luego musica para el oído. Cuando nos habla de sus grandes logros como productor del legendario guitarrista y cantante George Benson y del fenomenal vocalista de jazz Al Jarreau, es algo absolutamente impresionante.
Tommy Lipuma. Es sin lugar a dudas un icono de la música de las Americas y el mundo, Pero mas aun; un enorme ser humano, quien pese a sus años y dificultades físicas en una de sus piernas, la cual le ha forzado a caminar con un bastón, nunca a dejado de reafirmar sus pies sobre la tierra y ser cada dia mas humilde.

My coverage of the Festival International De Jazz De Montreal 2013, was not as large as in previous years... Well, this year I wanted to enjoy more from the point of view as an audience and not as a producer. But this does not mean that it has been less successful interesting than before.
Just fact of been there, is itself a privilege that very few people get. For example, share the honor of being a moment on camera, face to face with one of the greatest legends in the production of North American jazz and pop music such as Tommy Lipuma, it's something really priceless.
Listen to his own words about his beginnings and influences in music and its connection to jazz, it's a privilege and certainly music to the ear. When he talks about his great achievements as a producer of the legendary guitarist and singer George Benson and the phenomenal jazz vocalist Al Jarreau, is absolutely stunning.
Tommy Lipuma. It is undoubtedly an icon of the music of the Americas and the world, but more so, a great human being , who despite his age and physical difficulties in one of his legs, which forced him to walk with a cane , never ceased to assert his feet on the earth and be every day more humble.
A great example to follow if you want to be successful.

To celebrate legendary music producer and Clevelander Tommy LiPuma's 80th birthday, the 37th Tri-C JazzFest threw a Big Birthday Bash featuring Diana Krall, Dr. John, Al Jarreau, Leon Russell and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, along with a who's who of special guests.

'Kisses On The Bottom' bevat McCartney's favoriete 'American Songbook'-muziek, waarmee hij is opgegroeid en waaruit hij veel inspiratie haalde voor zijn eigen songs. He'll be leading a talk or two during the upcoming JazzFest, one with Michael Feinstein on Fri 4/26, and possibly another.
We caught up with Tommy for this exclusive interview, then joined him for an exclusive listening session where he joined his friend and fellow producer Bruce Botnick and previewed tracks from the upcoming Leon Russell album Tommy has been producing.
Botnick produced The MC5, The Doors, and Love, as well as Broadway and music for films such as E.T., Star Trek and Rambo.
On Tue 3/12, Tommy and Bruce will produce a session with Tri-C students during the day, then answer questions at 7PM in a free session in the Black Box Theatre at the Tommy LiPuma Center for Creative Arts, 2809 Woodland Avenue.

Tommy LiPuma (born July 5, 1936 in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American music producer. As of May 2012, LiPuma's productions have earned him 35 albums certified gold or platinum, 33 Grammy nominations, and 3 Grammy wins. He has worked with many musicians, including Barbra Streisand, Miles Davis, George Benson, Al Jarreau, Anita Baker, Natalie Cole, Claudine Longet, Dave Mason, the Yellowjackets, Michael Franks, Diana Krall, Sir Paul McCartney, The Story, The Crusaders, Joe Sample, Randy Crawford and Dr. John.
Career
When LiPuma was a child, an extended bone infection caused him to find solace with a bedside radio, where he discovered rhythm-and-blues and jazz artists of that time – Ruth Brown, Big Maybelle, Charles Brown and Nat Cole. Inspired by the music, he began taking lessons on the tenor saxophone. While playing in local big bands, he also attended barber school, intending to follow in his father's footsteps. However, a chance opportunity to go on tour with a band changed his plans. His first proper music business job was working as an entry-level employee for a local Cleveland music distributor, M.S. Distributors, where eventually he became the local promotions representative.

My coverage of the Festival International De Jazz De Montreal 2013, was not as large as in previous years... Well, this year I wanted to enjoy more from the point of view as an audience and not as a producer. But this does not mean that it has been less successful interesting than before.
Just fact of been there, is itself a privilege that very few people get. For example, share the honor of being a moment on camera, face to face with one of the greatest legends in the production of North American jazz and pop music such as Tommy Lipuma, it's something really priceless.
Listen to his own words about his beginnings and influences in music and its connection to jazz, it's a privilege and certainly music to the ear. When he talks about his great achievements as a producer of the legendary guitarist and singer George Benson and the phenomenal jazz vocalist Al Jarreau, is absolutely stunning.
Tommy Lipuma. It is undoubtedly an icon of the music of the Americas and the world, but more so, a great human being , who despite his age and physical difficulties in one of his legs, which forced him to walk with a cane , never ceased to assert his feet on the earth and be every day more humble.

Zo verwijst de titel naar de opener van het album; 'I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Write Myself A Letter', een hit van Fats Waller uit 1935. Daarnaast bevat het album twee eigen composities getiteld 'My Valentine' en 'Only Our Hearts'. Voor beide songs schakelde Paul McCartney gastmuzikanten in, respectievelijk Eric Clapton en Stevie Wonder. Daarnaast is op het album een grote rol weggelegd voor Diana Krall en haar band.

Strangely enough, Tiger in the Rain would have been a smoother transition from Sleeping Gypsy, just as Burchfield Nines would have been a more natural follow-up to The Art of Tea. For the first time, Michael Franks made an album completely without the production team of Tommy LiPuma, Al Schmitt and Lee Hershberg, employing instead John Simon the Band, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen. The recording boasts a large number of celebrated horn and string players, as well as jazz luminaries Ron Carter, Bucky Pizzarelli, Kenny Barron, Mike Mainieri and Flora Purim. Lush, romantic and more experimental than previous efforts, Tiger in the Rain has a seriousness of purpose that faithfully echoes that of Sleeping Gypsy, with less of a Brazilian feel and overall a more somber tone of lost love. While none of its songs has the instant appeal of some of his earlier writing, the album as a whole is as refreshing and meditative as a stroll through a rain forest.

Easily considered his commercial breakthrough, the album often lacks the lyrical and imaginative songwriting of previous efforts and sounds at times like two different albums. The contributions of Clare and Andre Fischer help bolster some of the more ambitious music, while players like Eddie Gómez, Eric Gale and David Spinozza at times appear underutilized. The title cut is another example of Franks' wry, observant takes on love and lust, yet musically it is a little lightweight. Still, considering the players, the occasionally adventurous musical ideas, and the basic jazz sound, Franks was able to go where very few jazz artists ever go in terms of attracting a larger audience and considerable airplay.

The Blue Note Jazz Club just celebrated their 30th Anniversary and what better way to bring it in is to have seven-time Grammy Award winning jazz/R&B; vocalist Al Jarreau perform to a week of sold-out performances. Mr. Jarreau was backed by the legendary George Duke and his trio featuring Mike Manson, Esperanza Spaulding, and Terri Lyne Carrington. The performances were also on the heels of the new recording "Al Jarreau and the George Duke Trio, Live at The Half Note, Volume. 1," the first of three vintage recordings that George recorded of them when they were both getting started in music when they performed in San Fransisco, California in the mid-1960's. George had the material sitting in his closet for decades and decided to have Al listen to the material and gave the go ahead to release the material. After endless hours of mixing the material, George was able to come up with three discs of material. Volume 1 is the first of the next two discs that will be released in the next couple of years.
Al Jarreau is one of the few singers that has won the award in the R & B, Pop, and Jazz categories throughout his 40 years in the business. Jarreau has been able to take his unique "vocalese" style of singing and fuse it with the contemporary sounds of most current music styles. Al can be placed in annals of great vocalists like Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks, Johnny Mathis and Tony Bennett. In 1976, Jarreau was signed to Warner Brothers Records under the tutelage of record producer, now seasoned record executive, Tommy LiPuma.
Alwyn Lopez Jarreau was born on March 12th, 1940 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and was the fifth of six siblings. Jarreau's father was a strict minister and singer but instilled a strong religious background and performing while growing up.
While attending college, Jarreau would dabble in music. He sang alongside a young and progressive pianist while pursuing his masters degree in San Francisco by the name of George Duke, who years later would produce and tour with. This was during the mid-to-late 1960's when the Bay Area was a hotbed of music. Al would also make the television and nightclub circuit that got him more experience as well as develop him as a better vocalist.Warner Brothers executives saw Jarreau perform at a club in 1975 and signed him. This was also the same year producer Tommy LiPuma signed saxophonist David Sanborn, guitarist and vocalist George Benson, and a new-comer named Michael Franks. 1976 proved to be a pivotal year for all these artists because Benson struck gold with is smash "Breezin" and Jarreau with his debut disc "We Got By."
