The Nebraska Medical Center's roots go back to 1869 when Bishop Clarkson opened the state's first hospital in downtown Omaha. When the University of Nebraska opened its medical school here several years later, a rich history of great patient care, research and education was born. University Hospital and Clarkson hospital each grew on their own for decades until 1997 when the two hospitals merged to form The Nebraska Medical Center. As partners, The Nebraska Medical Center and UNMC form a large and important part of Omaha, occupying more than five city blocks and millions of square feet of building space in midtown Omaha. These photos show where it began and how medical care and technology has progressed over the years.

Jessie Habluetzel is a Board Certified Music Therapist at The Nebraska Medical Center. She studied Music Therapy at The University of Kansas. Thanks to a generous donor, Jessie was hired full-time at The Nebraska Medical Center in October of 2013.
"That donation is very worthwhile. It goes to making kids happy and promoting the overall health and well being of these patients," said Jessie.
Music therapy is the clinical and evidenced based use of music interventions to address therapeutic goals. Research has shown that, like medicine, music can have a physiological effect when introduced in a therapeutic setting. Music therapy is not only something Jessie's patients enjoy, it also promotes healing, normalization of the hospital experience and overall quality of life.
So, what are these benefits of music therapy? And why might you want to request music therapy services for your child if they are admitted to the hospital? Music therapy may be recommended for a variety of reasons. Research has shown music therapy to help children that are:
• Anxious or agitated
• Unable to manage pain
• Showing symptoms of depression
• Coping poorly with their illness
• Hospitalized for a long period of time
• Non-compliant
• Needing cognitive or sensory stimulation
• Needing additional developmental support
• Needing positive sibling/family interactions and emotional support.
Currently, Jessie provides services to the General Pediatric, Pediatric Intensive Care, Pediatric Oncology/Hematology, and Neonatal Intensive Care units.
Adaptability is an important part of her job! Each session is customized to the child and each child is very different. She always encourages "choice" regarding participation, instruments, songs, and other aspects of the music interventions. Are the kids going to sing, write a song, play instruments, or listen to music today? What instruments should they use? Who is their favorite artist? So much of a child's hospital experience is not a choice; they don't get to choose to be at the hospital, or whether they take their medicine, or when they go to procedures. Music therapy tends to be a non-threatening medium that can be a part of their treatment, but also something that they have control over.
The one commonality Jessie sees across music therapy sessions is a smile. Whether it is from the patient and/or the patient's family, it is refreshing to watch joy and personalities shine through a dreary situation. While a simple thing, positive mood plays such an important role in the healing process! Many of Jessie's patients tend to have more energy, compliance, and overall positive attitudes following a music therapy session. This is yet another reason why she loves her job!
"Everything I do depends on the needs of the patients. I get to watch the kids smile, have fun and be creative! Some of the things these kids come up with is amazing," said Jessie.

BBEID houses the Center for Preparedness Education, two graduate academic programs, and the Medical Director for the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit.
The mission of The Center for Preparedness Education is to enhance community resilience through affordable preparedness education. Commissioned in 2002 by Nebraska Health and Human Services through Creighton University School of Medicine and University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), the Center for Preparedness Education has provided preparedness training in large part through Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) and Hospital Preparedness Program (HPP) grants for over 13 years. Orthopaedic research and faculty will also be located in the new building. Recently some of the Lauritzen family toured the construction site with Chancellor Gold and Nebraska Medicine leadership. Bruce Lauritzen provided his perspective in this short video.

Nebraska 
i/nəˈbræskə/ is a state that lies in both the Great Plains and the Midwestern United States. Its state capital is Lincoln. Its largest city is Omaha, which is on the Missouri River. The state is crossed by many historic trails and was explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The California Gold Rush brought the first large numbers of non-indigenous settlers to the area. Nebraska was admitted as the 37th state of the United States in 1867. The climate has wide variations between winter and summer temperatures, and violent thunderstorms and tornadoes are common. The state is characterized by treeless prairie, which is ideal for cattle-grazing. It is a major producer of beef, as well as pork, corn, and soybeans. The largest ancestry group claimed by Nebraskans is German American. The state also has the largest per capita population of Czech Americans among U.S. states.
Etymology
Nebraska's name is derived from transliteration of the archaic Otoe words Ñí Brásge, pronounced [ɲĩbɾasꜜkɛ] (contemporary Otoe Ñí Bráhge), or the Omaha Ní Btháska, pronounced [nĩbɫᶞasꜜka], meaning "flat water", after the Platte River that flows through the state.

Ndamukong Suh
Ndamukong Suh (/ᵻnˈdɑːməkᵻn ˈsuː/ in-DOM-ə-kin SOO, born January 6, 1987) is an American football defensive tackle for the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Detroit Lions second overall in the 2010 NFL Draft. He played college football at Nebraska, where he earned All-American honors.
As a college senior, Suh became one of the most decorated players in college football history. He won numerous awards including the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year Award, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Chuck Bednarik Award, Lombardi Award and Outland Trophy, and was recognized as a unanimous All-American.
Suh has been criticized for his aggressive style of play and has been fined eight times through 2014 for a total of $255,375 by the NFL, with seven for player-safety violations, and suspended once (for two games), resulting in the loss of an additional $165,294 in pay. Despite issues with sportsmanship, Suh is widely recognized as the best defensive tackle in the NFL and among the very best defensive players in the league. In 2015, Suh was named the 24th best player in the NFL, while being the sixth highest ranked defensive player. He's won numerous awards and accolades, having been named the Defensive Rookie of the Year, whilst being selected to four Pro Bowls in his first five seasons, and having been named an All Pro every year he's been in the NFL, four times to the All Pro First team, including his rookie year, and once to the All Pro Second team. In 2015, Suh became the highest paid defensive player in NFL history, having signed a six-year contract with the Miami Dolphins, worth in excess of $114 million, with nearly $60 million fully guaranteed.

Jessie Habluetzel is a Board Certified Music Therapist at The Nebraska Medical Center. She studied Music Therapy at The University of Kansas. Thanks to a generous donor, Jessie was hired full-time at The Nebraska Medical Center in October of 2013.
"That donation is very worthwhile. It goes to making kids happy and promoting the overall health and well being of these patients," said Jessie.
Music therapy is the clinical and evidenced based use of music interventions to address therapeutic goals. Research has shown that, like medicine, music can have a physiological effect when introduced in a therapeutic setting. Music therapy is not only something Jessie's patients enjoy, it also promotes healing, normalization of the hospital experience and overall quality of life.
So, what are these benefits of music therapy? And why might you want to request music therapy services for your child if they are admitted to the hospital? Music therapy may be recommended for a variety of reasons. Research has shown music therapy to help children that are:
• Anxious or agitated
• Unable to manage pain
• Showing symptoms of depression
• Coping poorly with their illness
• Hospitalized for a long period of time
• Non-compliant
• Needing cognitive or sensory stimulation
• Needing additional developmental support

For the past two years, Phil Smith, MD, has arguably been the most recognized face at the medical center. It started in 2014 when three patients with Ebola virus disease were brought to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit. As medical director of the unit, Dr. Smith was front and center doing a seemingly endless number of media interviews. “Some people really enjoy the media attention,” he says. “I’m not one of them.” But, Dr. Smith never wavered. He knew how to calmly report the facts. As it turns out, the Ebola chapter served as a magnificent capstone to Dr. Smith’s remarkable career. At the end of June – five months before he turns 70 – Dr. Smith is retiring. Oh, how he will be missed. Listen to the words of some of his closest colleagues. -

Abstract
The World Health Organization estimates that around 1.5 billion people are currently infected with latent tuberculosis (TB). Each year, 8 million people develop active disease and of these approximately 20% of the cases are multiple drug resistant and 2% are extensively drug resistant. In all, the annual death toll from TB is 2-3 million people worldwide. However, in spite of recent intensive research no new classes and delivery methods of anti-TB drugs have been developed for clinical use since the 1960’s. In this context, designing, developing and delivering a new drug is very important. To date two different biosynthetic pathways have been reported leading to isopentenyldiphosphate, the universal precursor of isoprenoids. The mevalonate pathway is found in animals whereas the methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) or non-mevalonatepathway is found in many bacteria, some protozoa and plants. Since the MEP pathway is not found in mammalian cells, it is considered an attractive target for the development of antimicrobials, antimalarials and herbicidal agents; a hypothesis that is being explored by raising number of researchers recently. In recent years, we reported enantioselective synthesis of DXP, MEP, CDPME, CDPME2P and MECPP, the substrates for assay development. In addition the kinetic studies of mycobacterial DXS, IspC, IspD, IspE, and IspF were also reported while developing assay. Computational screening against 14 million compounds gave us a good drug lead. With the newly synthesized MEP, CDPME substrate and developed assay a new IspD and IspE inhibitor were discovered showing good IC50 and MIC.
Biography
Prabagaran Narayanasamy is a faculty member in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neurosciences at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He received his PhD at IIT in Organic Chemistry and did his postdoctoral studies at North Dakota State University, Harvard University and University of Illinois Urbana-champaign. Later, he joined as a Research Scientist at Colorado State University to explore drug discovery. He has been a faculty at University of Nebraska Medical Center since 2012.His research interests are on development, delivering and discovering drug for anti-mycobacterial medicine and antiretroviral therapy. He has funding from NIH and also reviewer for proposals.
