Djibouti (/dʒɪˈbuːti/ ji-BOO-tee; Arabic: جيبوتي Jībūtī, French: Djibouti, Somali: Jabuuti, Afar: Gabuuti), officially the Republic of Djibouti, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. It is bordered by Eritrea in the north, Ethiopia in the west and south, and Somaliland in the southeast. The remainder of the border is formed by the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden at the east. Djibouti occupies a total area of just 23,200 km2 (8,958 sq mi).
In antiquity, the territory was part of the Land of Punt. Nearby Zeila (now in Somaliland) was the seat of the medieval Adal and Ifat Sultanates. In the late 19th century, the colony of French Somaliland was established following treaties signed by the ruling Somali and Afar sultans with the French and its railroad to Dire Dawa (and later Addis Ababa) allowed it to quickly supersede Zeila as the port for southern Ethiopia and the Ogaden. It was subsequently renamed to the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas in 1967. A decade later, the Djiboutian people voted for independence. This officially marked the establishment of the Republic of Djibouti, named after its capital city. Djibouti joined the United Nations the same year, on September 20, 1977. In the early 1990s, tensions over government representation led to armed conflict, which ended in a power sharing agreement in 2000 between the ruling party and the opposition.

I fly into this seldom visited east African nation. For my first day, I amble around Djibouti City, taking in the sights, sounds and chaos. Day two sees me driving West to Lake Assal, a huge salt lake that is Africa's lowest point.
A former French colony, the Republic of Djibouti is one of the newest and smallest countries in Africa. Founded as a port city, it boasts a favourable location on the Red Sea. Its important role in international sea trade has turned Djibouti into an oasis of peace in a turbulent region. Here you can find a healthy mix of nationalities and religions as well as architectural styles. Its beautiful capital has a unique look that marries Eastern and Western architectural traditions, while some of its street names have a familiar ring to Russian ears. According to UN estimates, nearly 100,000 people have fled Yemen since violence erupted there in March. Of those escaping the conflict, over 20,000 have sought refuge in the tiny East African nation of Djibouti, an authoritarian state located between Eritrea and Somalia seen as a beacon of stability in the region, largely due to its hosting of a US military base. The Markazi refugee camp, located in the arid and dusty Obock region, plays host to many of those fleeing Yemen. Refugees can live in the tented camp, where the average June temperature varied between 111 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit (44 - 50 degrees Celsius). Otherwise they can pay cripplingly high rental costs for substandard living conditions in Djibouti City. Following on from our coverage of the conflict in Aden, VICE News tr...

ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA — The Chinese-built railway Ethiopia-Djibouti railway officially opened on Wednesday, marking the latest instance of the Sino-African cooperation. The 750-km railway links the Red Sea port of Djibouti to Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa. According to Xinhua, it is Africa’s first electric railway. The trains are powered by overhead wires. The train can travel at a top speed of 120 km per hour, which is much slower than other high-speed trains in the world. Nonetheless, the railway is expected to reduce a drive time of seven days between the two places to just 10 hours. According to Xinhua, the railway will be managed by a consortium of Chinese companies for about six years until Ethiopians are trained enough to take over. The Chinese management aims to create ne...
