A content management system (CMS) is a computer application that allows publishing, editing, modifying, organizing, deleting, and maintaining content from a central interface. Such systems of content management provide procedures to manage workflow in a collaborative environment. These procedures can be manual steps or an automated cascade. CMSs have been available since the late 1990s.
CMSs are often used to run websites containing blogs, news, and shopping. Many corporate and marketing websites use CMSs. CMSs typically aim to avoid the need for hand coding, but may help it for specific elements or entire pages.
The function of Content Management Systems is to store and organize files, and provide version-controlled access to their data. CMS features vary widely. Simple systems showcase a handful of features, while other releases, notably enterprise systems, offer more complex and powerful functions. Most CMSs include Web-based publishing, format management, (version control), indexing, search, and retrieval. The CMS increases the version number when new updates are added to an already-existing file. Some content management systems also support the separation of content and presentation.
A management system is the framework of policies, processes and procedures used to ensure that an organization can fulfill all tasks required to achieve its objectives.
For instance, an environmental management system enables organizations to improve their environmental performance through a process of continuous improvement. An oversimplification is "Plan, Do, Check, Act". A more complete system would include accountability (an assignment of personal responsibility) and a schedule for activities to be completed, as well as auditing tools to implement corrective actions in addition to scheduled activities, creating an upward spiral of continuous improvement.
Also as in the aforementioned management system, an occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) enables an organization to control its occupational health and safety risks and to improve its performance by means of continuous improvement.
Examples of management system standards include:
Content management (CM), is a set of processes and technologies that supports the collection, managing, and publishing of information in any form or medium. When stored and accessed via computers, this information may be more specifically referred to as digital content, or simply as content. Digital content may take the form of text (such as electronic documents), multimedia files (such as audio or video files), or any other file type that follows a content lifecycle requiring management. The process is complex enough to manage that several large and small commercial software vendors such as Interwoven and Microsoft offer content management software to control and automate significant aspects of the content lifecycle.
Content management practices and goals vary by mission and by organizational governance structure. News organizations, e-commerce websites, and educational institutions all use content management, but in different ways. This leads to differences in terminology and in the names and number of steps in the process.

Manuscript to the voiceover Hi – my name is Anders. I’m the owner of DataStarter. We create professional websites and marketing. We often get the question: What type of development tool, for a website, would we recommend? And why? To answer this, we need an overview of the different types of possibilities for creating a website. We have divided it into 3 groups: • Website Builders • Content management system (CMS) • Hand-coded Website Builders are cheap, extremely user-friendly, with drag and drop features. There is no need for experience or knowledge in coding or databases for creating a usable website. There are, however, shortcomings, such as limited site speed, lack of customisation, and restricted SEO options. Among the common used Website Builders are: • Wix • Weebly • Jimdo...

Jed Watson In 2015, Node.js is leading the way with modularity, flexibility, npm and everyone's favorite build tools. CMS platforms are an important part of the web development ecosystem, but probably remind you of monolithic PHP systems you're glad you don't develop for anymore. Can two such opposing philosophies be friends? Let's look at how, by bringing new ideas to old problems, we can make node.js more accessible and powerful for a new generation of developers.

Adam Brenecki https://2016.pycon-au.org/schedule/102/view_talk Django CMS, Mezzanine and Wagtail are the three most popular Django-based content management systems; all three have kept (or, in Wagtail's case, gained) their popularity because they are so different to each other. In many ways, from their fundamental data models right through to how they approach their content editing UIs, each one has a very different take on how a CMS should work. This talk will explore the different approaches, strengths and weaknesses of each CMS, and what they mean for you as a developer and for your content editors.
