Death often comes when least expected. The same goes for actors working in television, who've sometimes succumbed to health-related and emotional issues while their shows were still in production.
Sometimes the show goes on, and sometimes it doesn't.
1.
Nancy Marchand
Tony Soprano's mother
Livia shaped the gangster, and towards the show's end she was going to testify against him. But Marchand died of lung cancer before the plot could come to fruition, so "
The Sopranos" abandoned the story.
2.
Cory Monteith
In July of
2013, Monteith was found dead from what was later confirmed to be a drug overdose. "
Glee" postponed production of its fifth season for several months, and honored Monteith and his character
Finn with the episode "
The Quarterback."
3.
Phil Hartman
Former "
Saturday Night Live" and "NewsRadio" star Hartman was tragically shot to death by his wife in
1998. The show's fourth season had wrapped, so when
Season 5 opened the story alluded to the character's death.
4.
Freddie Prinze
At age 22, "
Chico and the Man" star Prinze committed suicide midway through
Season 3. The show initially did nothing—sending
Chico off to
Mexico and replacing him with another character
. In the end,
Jack Albertson ("
The Man") revealed Chico had died.
5.
David Strickland
Strickland killed himself in
1999, forcing "
Suddenly Susan" to acknowledge the actor's death and write off his character.
6.
John Spencer
Spencer's
Chief of Staff Leo McGarry died of a heart attack during the final season of "
The West Wing." That's because Spencer himself suffered the same fate in
2005.
7.
Nicholas Colasanto
Colasanto's beloved character
Coach from "
Cheers" was a hard one to let go after the actor died after the third season. The fourth season acknowledged Coach's death and introduced
Woody Harrelson's new character.
8.
Jim Davis
Davis, who played
John Ross 'Jock' Ewing on "
Dallas," died from multiple myeloma during the show's fourth season. The character was kept off screen until the following season, when it was admitted he'd died in a helicopter crash.
9.
John Ritter
As
Season 2 of "
8 Simple Rules (For Dating
My Teenage Daughter)" began, actor Ritter died from an un-diagnosed aortic dissection. The show took a two-month hiatus, cast
James Garner and
David Spade as new characters, and returned for another two seasons.
10.
Larry Hagman
Hagman's
John Ross "
J.R." Ewing, Jr. returned to
TNT's revival of "Dallas". He died in
2012 from complications with myeloid leukemia, and the show decided to kill the character off via a murder plot device and visual effects.
11.
Will Lee
For many early watchers of "
Sesame Street,"
Mr. Hooper was the show's Mr. Rogers-like persona as the street's storekeeper.
Actor Will Lee died of a heart attack in
1982, and the show decided to use the sad occurrence as a teachable moment.
12.
Stanley Kamel
Kamel, who played
Monk's therapist in the titular show "
Monk," suffered a heart attack in 2008. His character suffered the same fate in an episode from the seventh season.
13.
Jack Soo
Midway through the fifth season of "
Barney Miller," Soo succumbed to esophageal cancer. The cast broke the fourth wall in a later episode to celebrate his memory. It was suggested his character had died in the show
.
14. Lynne Thigpen
During Season 3 of "
The District," Thigpen suddenly suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died. Her character
Ella suffered a similar fate in a later episode.
15.
Dolph Sweet
Sweet of "
Gimme a Break!" died from cancer in
1985. When the show returned for the following season, his character died too. The show continued for two more seasons.
