After giving the 2015 Stanford University Commencement Speech on June 14, Richard Engel, NBC News' chief foreign correspondent visited Google the following day.
Engel is widely regarded as one of America’s leading foreign correspondents, having been the chief foreign correspondent for NBC News since 2008. He has covered wars, revolutions and political transitions around the world for nearly 20 years. He has just returned from Nepal, where he went to cover the devastating earthquake, which killed nearly 9,000 people.
In 2012, Engel and his crew were kidnapped for five days while covering the Syrian Civil War and psychologically tortured. Thankfully, all escaped and made it out alive.
Engel’s work has received numerous awards, including, most recently, his second Peabody award, for his coverage of the rise of ISIS. He has also won seven Emmy awards, an award of excellence from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and the 2008 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award and the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism, the first ever given to a broadcast journalist, for his report "War Zone Diary."
Engel has lived in the Middle East since graduating from Stanford University in 1996 with a B.A. in international relations. He speaks and reads fluent Arabic, which he learned while living in Cairo. He is also fluent in Italian and Spanish.
Engel is the author of two books, “A Fist in the Hornet’s Nest” and “War Journal: My Five Years in Iraq,” which chronicle his experiences covering the Iraq war. He is also fluent in Arabic, Italian and Spanish.

U.S. underestimated the threat of ISIS, especially in Syria, and simultaneously overestimated the willingness and preparedness of the Iraqi army to fight the Islamist militants. Syria became "ground zero" for jihadists during the "chaos" of the civil war there, Obama told CBS correspondent Steve Kroft during an interview on "60 Minutes". Obama said the U.S. "underestimated what had been taking place in Syria," and when asked about director of national intelligence James Clapper's recent comments that the U.S. also overestimated the capabilities of the Iraqi military, Obama said: "That’s true, that’s absolutely true."
"That’s why it’s so important for us to recognize, part of our solution here is going to be military," Obama said. But the president reiterated that "political solutions" must be reached in Iraq and Syria in order to mitigate the conflict and terror threats in the Middle East. The U.S. has been carrying out airstrikes against ISIS for weeks, and on Monday began an airstrike campaign in Syria. "We just have to push them back, and shrink their space," Obama said, "and go after their command and control; and their capacity; and their weapons; and their fueling; and cut off their financing; and work to eliminate the flow of foreign fighters." But Obama has said, despite criticism from some, that America will not engage in a ground war in Iraq or Syria.
ISIS is well-financed and draws fighters from many nations, including the United States and other Western countries.
ISIS targets ethnic groups, journalists, women and children, the paper said.
"Unmarried women -- whom ISIS considers to be females over the age of puberty -- pose a particular threat to the armed group's enforced social order," the paper said. "Parents of unmarried women and girls are terrified of their daughters being forced to marry ISIS fighters and as a result, early marriage is on the rise. Their fears are not unfounded.
"There are distressing accounts of fighters taking girls as young as 13 years old away from their families, resulting in violations of international humanitarian law and acts that amount to war crimes of cruel treatment, sexual violence and rape."
Education is used to indoctrinate children, the paper said.
Propaganda and social media
In the Syrian city of Raqqah, "children are gathered for screenings of videos depicting mass executions of government soldiers, (desensitizing) them to extreme violence. By using, conscripting and enlisting children for active combat roles, the group is perpetrating abuses and war crimes on a massive scale in a systematic and organized manner," the paper said.
Children are also exposed to horrific sights, such as public executions, public mutilations and the display of bodies in town squares and other visible spots, it said.
Besides terror, ISIS exerts control by taking journalists captive and regulating public services in areas it controls, the paper said.
"At the core of ISIS' propaganda strategy is an effective use of modern communications, particularly social media for purposes of recruitment and fundraising," it said. "Many new recruits, from the region and beyond, have been influenced by widely disseminated violent images of executions, beheadings and stonings."
In other news from Syria, the United States-led coalition carried out 20 airstrikes, including 19 against ISIS and one against the al Qaeda-linked group, Khorasan, U.S. Central Command said Friday.
The strikes happened between Wednesday and Friday and 17 of them destroyed ISIS positons and vehicles near Kobani. An airstrike east of the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa destroyed one of the militants training camp.
The strike against several terror suspects associated with the Khorasan group took place west of Aleppo. Meanwhile the coalition also conducted 16 airstrikes in Iraq against ISIS, including two strikes west of Kirkuk, three near Baiji and one near Fallujah that destroyed a large ISIS unit, according to Central Command.

Richard Engel
Richard Engel (born September 16, 1973) is an American journalist and author who is NBC News' chief foreign correspondent. He was assigned to that position on April 18, 2008, after being the network's Middle East correspondent and Beirut Bureau chief. Engel was the first broadcast journalist recipient of the Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism for his report "War Zone Diary".
Prior to joining NBC News in May 2003, he covered the start of the 2003 war in Iraq from Baghdad for ABC News as a freelance journalist. He speaks and reads Arabic fluently and is also fluent in Italian and Spanish. Engel wrote the book A Fist in the Hornet's Nest, published in 2004, about his experience covering the Iraq War from Baghdad. His newest book, War Journal: My Five Years in Iraq, published in June 2008, picks up where his last book left off.
Engel is known for having covered the Iraq War, the Arab Spring and the Syrian civil war.
Early years
Engel grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. He has an older brother who is a cardiologist. His father, Peter, a former Goldman Sachs financier, and mother Nina, who ran an antiques store, feared for their son's future prospects because of his dyslexia. His mother is Swedish.

Rachel Maddow
Rachel Anne Maddow (
i/ˈmædoʊ/, born April 1, 1973) is an American television host, political commentator, and author. She hosts a nightly television show, The Rachel Maddow Show, on MSNBC. Her syndicated talk radio program of the same name aired on Air America Radio. Maddow is the first openly gay anchor to host a major prime-time news program in the United States. She holds a doctorate in politics from Oxford University.
Asked about her political views by the Valley Advocate, Maddow replied, "I'm undoubtedly a liberal, which means that I'm in almost total agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."
Early life and education
Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert B. "Bob" Maddow, is a former United States Air Force captain who resigned his commission the year before her birth and found civilian work as a lawyer for the East Bay Municipal Utility District. Her mother, Elaine Maddow (née Gosse), is a school program administrator. She has one older brother, David. Her paternal grandfather was from an Eastern European Jewish family (the original family surname being "Medwedof"), while her paternal grandmother was of Dutch (Protestant) background; her mother, originally from Newfoundland, Canada, is of English and Irish ancestry. Maddow has stated that her family is "very, very Catholic," and she grew up in a community that her mother has described as "very conservative." Maddow was a competitive athlete and participated in three sports in high school: volleyball, basketball, and swimming. Referencing John Hughes films, she has described herself as being "a cross between the jock and the antisocial girl" in high school.

Bill Maher
William "Bill" Maher (/ˈmɑːr/; born January 20, 1956) is an American comedian, writer, producer, political commentator, actor, media critic, and television host. As a television host, he is well known for the HBO political talk show Real Time with Bill Maher (2003–present). Maher previously hosted a similar late-night show called Politically Incorrect, originally on Comedy Central and later on ABC.
Maher is known for his sarcastic attitude,political satire and sociopolitical commentary. He targets many topics including religion, politics, bureaucracies, political correctness, and the mass media.
Maher supports the legalization of cannabis and same-sex marriage. His critical views of religion were the basis for the 2008 documentary film Religulous. He is a supporter of animal rights, having served on the board of PETA since 1997, and is an advisory board member of Project Reason. In 2005, Maher ranked at number 38 on Comedy Central's 100 greatest stand-up comedians of all time. He received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star on September 14, 2010.

Syria became "ground zero" for jihadists during the "chaos" of the civil war there, Obama told CBS correspondent Steve Kroft during an interview on "60 Minutes". Obama said the U.S. "underestimated what had been taking place in Syria," and when asked about director of national intelligence James Clapper's recent comments that the U.S. also overestimated the capabilities of the Iraqi military, Obama said: "That’s true, that’s absolutely true."
"That’s why it’s so important for us to recognize, part of our solution here is going to be military," Obama said. But the president reiterated that "political solutions" must be reached in Iraq and Syria in order to mitigate the conflict and terror threats in the Middle East. The U.S. has been carrying out airstrikes against ISIS for weeks, and on Monday began an airstrike campaign in Syria. "We just have to push them back, and shrink their space," Obama said, "and go after their command and control; and their capacity; and their weapons; and their fueling; and cut off their financing; and work to eliminate the flow of foreign fighters." But Obama has said, despite criticism from some, that America will not engage in a ground war in Iraq or Syria.
ISIS is well-financed and draws fighters from many nations, including the United States and other Western countries.
ISIS targets ethnic groups, journalists, women and children, the paper said.
"Unmarried women -- whom ISIS considers to be females over the age of puberty -- pose a particular threat to the armed group's enforced social order," the paper said. "Parents of unmarried women and girls are terrified of their daughters being forced to marry ISIS fighters and as a result, early marriage is on the rise. Their fears are not unfounded.
"There are distressing accounts of fighters taking girls as young as 13 years old away from their families, resulting in violations of international humanitarian law and acts that amount to war crimes of cruel treatment, sexual violence and rape."
Education is used to indoctrinate children, the paper said.
Propaganda and social media
In the Syrian city of Raqqah, "children are gathered for screenings of videos depicting mass executions of government soldiers, (desensitizing) them to extreme violence. By using, conscripting and enlisting children for active combat roles, the group is perpetrating abuses and war crimes on a massive scale in a systematic and organized manner," the paper said.
Children are also exposed to horrific sights, such as public executions, public mutilations and the display of bodies in town squares and other visible spots, it said.
Besides terror, ISIS exerts control by taking journalists captive and regulating public services in areas it controls, the paper said.
"At the core of ISIS' propaganda strategy is an effective use of modern communications, particularly social media for purposes of recruitment and fundraising," it said. "Many new recruits, from the region and beyond, have been influenced by widely disseminated violent images of executions, beheadings and stonings."
In other news from Syria, the United States-led coalition carried out 20 airstrikes, including 19 against ISIS and one against the al Qaeda-linked group, Khorasan, U.S. Central Command said Friday.
The strikes happened between Wednesday and Friday and 17 of them destroyed ISIS positons and vehicles near Kobani. An airstrike east of the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa destroyed one of the militants training camp.
The strike against several terror suspects associated with the Khorasan group took place west of Aleppo. Meanwhile the coalition also conducted 16 airstrikes in Iraq against ISIS, including two strikes west of Kirkuk, three near Baiji and one near Fallujah that destroyed a large ISIS unit, according to Central Command.

I. The Search for Identity. When it comes to some Jihadis especially those who have been third culture kids growing up in a country and having two identities can cause an identity crisis and tension. They may feel the drive to search for what the “real” or dominant identity is and feel compelled to prove that identity.
II. The Search for Meaning. What can be better than being at the center of the stage of a Cosmic Drama?
Jihadism offers this and no secular gang can offer such cosmic significance. To be part of a great narrative that gives one ultimate purpose and meaning is something that humans are attracted to. To be certain and to be central in the grand story of the Universe and existence is not a bad recruiting tool.
“I started getting interested in my deen [religious life] around 2012,” Hoda Muthana told BuzzFeed in an interview... “I felt like my life was so bland without it. Life has much more meaning when u know why ur here.” Muthana left America and went to join ISIS in Syria.
III. The Search for Justice. Grievances can be real (Assad’s crimes or other Tyrants) or perceived (middle class western recruits). Whether they be real or perceived to a human perceived is just as real. Not only those who are displaced and marginalized but those who feel displaced and marginalized.
IV. The Search for Asabiyyah. The great Muslim historian Ibn Khaldun gave the term Asabiyyah for social cohesion, group feeling, and solidarity. It is the factor that gives one group the ability to rise over other groups that have little or lesser Asabiyyah. That is why a couple thousand ISIS members can take over Mosul from a larger and better funded military at the time. The Iraqi army had little Asabiyyah...they did not feel there was a State or government worth protecting. ISIS had the asabiyyah advantage.
The jihadism of Daesh is not Nihilism, it is a reaction to Nihilism.
"ISIS, however, recoils from such an encounter with doubt. Far from being nihilistic, the followers of ISIS are instead terrified by the empty vistas nihilism reveals. They parade a twisted version of Islam as truth, insisting that death and blood on earth are a necessary sacrifice for the paradise that awaits the religious warrior. Many of Al Qaeda’s and ISIS’s recruits are disaffected young men glad to turn to a thrilling new belief system that walls them off from the danger of nihilism. As George Orwell, among others, pointed out, a similar role has been played by other belief systems, like communism: No matter how violent the deed, it was done in the service of History, the brutal deity of the communist movement. The worldwide caliphate ISIS aims for is a vision just as galvanizing, and just as illusory, as the communist utopia."
