Phyllis Newman (born March 19, 1933) is an American actress and singer. She won the 1962 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role as Martha Vail in the Broadway-theatre production of Subways Are for Sleeping and has been nominated twice for the Drama Desk Award.
Newman was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, the daughter of Rachael and Arthur Newman. She attended Lincoln High School where she was voted "Future Hollywood Star".
Newman made her Broadway debut in Wish You Were Here in 1952. Additional theater credits include Bells Are Ringing, Pleasures and Palaces, The Apple Tree, On the Town, The Prisoner of Second Avenue, Awake and Sing!, Broadway Bound and Subways Are for Sleeping, for which she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical, beating out Barbra Streisand in I Can Get It for You Wholesale. She has been nominated twice for the Drama Desk Award and received a second Tony Award nomination for Broadway Bound.
Phyllis (Greek: Φυλλίς) is a character in Greek mythology, daughter of a Thracian king (according to some, of Sithon; most other accounts do not give her father's name at all, but one informs that he was named either Philander, Ciasus, or Thelus). She married Demophon, King of Athens and son of Theseus, while he stopped in Thrace on his journey home from the Trojan War.
Demophon, duty bound to Greece, returns home to help his father, leaving Phyllis behind. She sends him away with a coffin with the sacrament of Rhea, asking him to open it only when he has given up hope of returning to her. From here, the story diverges. In one version, Phyllis realizes that he will not return and commits suicide by hanging herself from a tree. Where she is buried, an almond tree grows, which blossoms when Demophon returns to her. In a second version of the story, Demophon opens the caskets and, horrified by what he saw in there, rides off like wild, but his horse stumbles and he accidentally falls on his own sword.
The surname Newman may refer to many people:
Orson Bean (born July 22, 1928) is an American film, television, and stage actor. He appeared frequently on televised game shows in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, and was a long-time panelist on the television game show To Tell the Truth.
Bean was born Dallas Frederick Burrows in Burlington, Vermont, the son of Marian Ainsworth (née Pollard) and George Frederick Burrows. His father was a founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a fund-raiser for the Scottsboro Boys' defense, and a 20-year member of the campus police of Harvard College. Orson graduated from the Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. He is a first cousin twice removed of Calvin Coolidge, who was President of the United States at the time of Bean's birth. Orson Bean is a founding member of The Sons of the Desert, the international Laurel and Hardy Society. Bean served for two years in the United States Army stationed in Japan (1946-1947).
In 1952, Bean made a guest appearance on NBC Radio's weekly hot-jazz series The Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street. His vocal mannerisms were ideal for the mock-serious tone of the show, and he became the show's master of ceremonies ("Dr. Orson Bean") for its final season. Bean was a frequent guest on The Tonight Show (with both Jack Paar and Johnny Carson), and appeared on game shows originating from New York. He was a regular panelist on To Tell the Truth in versions from the late 1950s through 1991. During this time, his father appeared as a subject of the panel and he had to disqualify himself from participating. Apparently no one knew his real name was Burrows. He appeared on Super Password and Match Game, among other game shows. He hosted a pilot for a revamped version of Concentration in 1985 which was picked up later on in 1987 as Classic Concentration with Alex Trebek.
Phyllis Newman has to pay for her crime.

"I Was A Shoo-In" is the show-stopping number that Phyllis Newman performed in the 1961 musical "Subways Are For Sleeping". The premise of the show was to focus in on a group of "underground" folks in New York City who are resourceful, energetic, and ingenious people - but who have decided to live in unorthodox ways, eschewing the "9 to 5" grind, rejecting the "rat race" and still enjoying life. Among the colorful characters in the show is Miss Martha Vail (Newman) who is consistently clad only in a bath towel, staving off possible eviction at her hotel room by constantly telling the hotel manager she is "sick" through the locked door. Her "system" is to invite a gentleman caller to her room on the pretext of a date - order food over the telephone, and when the man arrives, simply pass the...

HOW DO YOU DO, I LOVE YOU was a modern "rock" musical written by Richard Maltby Jr. and David Shire, with a book by Michael Stewart. Described by the authors as the first musical written entirely in the Rock'n'Roll genre (though to my ears the music isn't very Rock-y) this ill-fated musical about the hip world of computer dating played the Shady Grove and Westbury Music Fairs in October and November of 1967 before closing on the road. Though the show was never officially recorded and has't been performed since some of its songs were recycled in Maltby & Shire's famous trunk song revues. The show's orchestrations were by legend Jonathan Tunick in one of his earliest ventures, and also in the cast were Carole Cook and Loni Ackerman.
