NUGS Celebrates Ghana's Republic Day

*Freedom is not something that one person can bestow on another as a gift; it is an inalienable right and thus, not denied any individual *

These were the paraphrased words of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, when Ghana attained a Republican status on July 1, 1960.

When you reminiscent such days of Osagyefo, you would appreciate a lot more, the motivating force and course for which courageous men prevailed even in the face of adversaries.

Truth be told that, the Pioneers of Ghana's total liberation were driven by patriotism for a people and a country ; and they were ready, as it were, to achieve this goal either by shield or on shield.

On this auspicious day, 1st July, The National Union Of Ghana Students(NUGS) pays tribute to those fallen heroes and heroines who dedicated their lives to push the aforementioned national agendum.

Because of their blood and sweat, today, most school-going Ghanaian youth, if not all, have an opportunity to a future regardless of their creed or ethnic affiliation; Because of the patriotic ideology of these heroes, Ghanaians now embrace the spirit of self-worth and self-determination.

As we commemorate this day, we must learn from our bitter past in our bid to forge ahead. The mistakes of yesterday must be raw materials to the success of today!

We must not lose cognizance of the aim for the struggle for a Republic; We must ensure our economy is strengthened to meet the demands of our people ; We must ensure our education system is given a facelift to ensure quality, equity and ready access by all citizens;

Let us take charge of our resources and have at least 50 +1 percent of say on how they are used.

The status quo still validates there is more to be done as a Republic.

It is time to rise vis a vis the lessons presented by the past; Time to continue the fight initiated by our ancestors; and

Now is our time to bulldoze all barriers that continue to hinder this country's progress.

Fellow students and Ghanaians at large, we must redefine student leadership and national politics in order to bring prosperity to the generation ahead of us; The time is right to restore past glories and reaffirm the words of Nkrumah after attaining independence and a Republic status for this country - *The Blackman is capable of managing his own affairs * .

With this, the message is clear: we send a strong signal to the world that Ghana will not succumb to the concept of neo-colonialism as propagated by some world political forces.

Equally as Ghanaians let us all ensure no one divide us or generate among us violence especially at the time we approach another general election.

All politicians should be mindful of their actions and inactions bearing in mind that we at NUGS shall ensure that no amount of the forces of injustice and intolerance will stop us from protecting our nation on the pillars of freedom and Justice.

Equally, the law enforcement agencies should beef up their efforts in ensuring every individual respect the rights and freedoms of all others to promote peace and order.

As a nation, we at NUGS, are very certain that the intended freedom for the republican status will be fully accomplished in all that we do as a citizens.

Freedom in all aspects of life is KEY.
