You will learn about "Water Pollution" in this video. Contamination of water by harmful substances, which affects life on earth, is termed as water pollution.
Due to human activities, our water is getting more and more polluted day by day. Household garbage is disposed into various sources of water. Many people perform their domestic activities like bathing, washing clothes and utensils, etc. in these sources of water.
Also, industrial wastes are discharged into the water, leading to water pollution.
Consumption of this polluted water leads to diseases like cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea, etc. in human beings. Polluted water also adversely affects the aquatic life.
Thus, we need to make sure that we do not pollute water. Domestic activities such as bathing, washing clothes and utensils should not be done in rivers, lakes, ponds, etc. Household garbage should not be disposed in the various sources of water. Also, sewage and industrial waste water should be treated before discharging into the water.

Water Pollution is a familiar topic, where solutions are rarely found. The reasons are usually industrialization and lack of political will. In a world ruled by the power of money, polluting our water sources and driving thousands of animal species to extinction is a less important issue than following corporate interests. Water is everyone's right and we must unite to prevent water ownership and privatization.
Cookie is a spotted seal, who is concerned about people's treatment of the water sources worldwide. Going from one fact to the other, he comes to the conclusion, that those who have the biggest impact are the ones who can actually make a change and prevent further damage on the most important natural resource.

About this Video:
The major effects of water pollution is the damage to the food chain. When harmful toxins are present in water they are transferred to higher level organisms through the food chain.
Heavy metals like lead, mercury, iron, cadmium, aluminum, and magnesium are present in water sources. If these metals are present in the sediment, these reach the food chain through plants and aquatic animals. This causes heavy metal poisoning in the water.
Polluted water is a hot bed for diseases. Microbial water pollution can spread infectious diseases such as typhoid and cholera from drinking contaminated water.
Water pollutants alter the overall chemistry of the water, causing changes in acidity, conductivity and temperature. These in turn have an effect on the marine life .
Heavy rain carries up dirt and silt and deposit them into the water. If the dirt and silt settle in the water body, then these sediments prevent sunlight from reaching aquatic plants. If the sunlight can’t reach the plants, they perish. These sediments also clog up fish gills and suffocate organisms that live on the bottom of the body of the water.
If oil is spilled on the water due to accidents, the effects on the ecosystem and the components are harmful. Many animals can get destroyed in case they swallow oil.
Things we can do to reduce water pollution
DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil, or grease down the sink. Keep a “fat jar” under the sink to collect the fat and discard in the solid waste when full.
DO NOT dispose of household chemicals or cleaning agents down the sink or toilet.
Avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket. Most tissues, wrappers, dust cloths, and other paper goods should be properly discarded in a wastebasket.
DO NOT flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugs down the toilet.
Install a water efficient toilet.
Run the dishwasher or clothes washer only when you have a full load. This conserves electricity and water.
Use the minimum amount of detergent and/or bleach when you are washing clothes or dishes.
Use only phosphate-free soaps and detergents.
If you do your part to prevent pollution in your area, then you'll be helping to protect water for both yourself and everything else that relies upon this precious resource.
Minimize the use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers. DO NOT dispose of these chemicals, motor oil, or other automotive fluids into the sanitary sewer or storm sewer systems. Both of them end at the river.

Learn the basics about water pollution, whilst learning about environmental chemistry.
The substances mankind throws away have polluted lakes, rivers and even the oceans.
The United Nations estimate that around 10% of the world’s people do not have access to clean drinking water. The main problem with this untreated water is that it can carry diseases, such as cholera, that spread through untreated human faeces. This is particularly serious in shanty towns near big cities and in refugee camps.
Rivers and streams can also be polluted with diseases from water coming from badly managed rubbish dumps. But human sewage is not the only substance that pollutes our water supplies – most of the other substances humans allow to escape into streams, rivers and the oceans, are more a danger to natural ecosystems than to us directly.
Chemical fertilisers are much more soluble in water than organic, manure-based fertilisers, so heavy rain can wash them into streams and lakes, causing eutrophication. The fertilisers cause algae to grow very fast forming a mat on the lake surface, which blocks sunlight from the vegetation deeper down, which then dies. Bacteria feed off the dying vegetation and use up the remaining oxygen supply. Once the oxygen has gone all animal life dies and the lake ecosystem is destroyed.
If heavy metals, such as lead mercury and cadmium, get into rivers and lakes many animals will die.
Radioactive waste is normally stored above ground in water tanks, waiting for a more permanent underground storage where it has to be safe for millions of years. There are fears that these underground stores could fail and contaminate water courses. Following a nuclear disaster, water courses and the oceans can become dangerously polluted with radioactive waste.
During mining and drilling operations to extract minerals from the earth, aquifers, which are underground water courses, can become polluted. Huge amounts of plastic thrown away from ships, and washed out to sea from rubbish dumps on land, have ended up floating in huge islands of waste causing a serious threat to fish, seabirds and other marine animals.
Coal and oil fuelled power stations have been responsible, more so in the past, for causing acid rain.
Fossil fuel and nuclear power stations need large amounts of water for condensing the steam which drives their turbines. This water is usually cooled on site in the great cooling towers that dominate the skyline of power-stations. Even so the water will be returned to the river or sea warmer than before. This can upset the river or sea ecosystems. Although not material pollution this waste heat is a pollutant.

Water pollution is serious concern in India yet we give very less attention to it and still the water pollution is going on large scale..
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). Water pollution occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.
Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in these bodies of water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities.
An estimated of 580 people in India die of water pollution related illness every day.
Water pollution is a major environmental issue in India. The largest source of water pollution in India is untreated sewerage. Other sources of pollution include agricultural runoff and unregulated small scale industry. Most rivers, lakes and surface water in India are polluted.
A 2007 study finds that discharge of untreated sewage is the single most important cause for pollution of surface and ground water in India. There is a large gap between generation and treatment of domestic waste water in India. The problem is not only that India lacks sufficient treatment capacity but also that the sewage treatment plants that exist do not operate and are not maintained.
The majority of the government-owned sewage treatment plants remain closed most of the time due to improper design or poor maintenance or lack of reliable electricity supply to operate the plants, together with absentee employees and poor management. The waste water generated in these areas normally percolates in the soil or evaporates. The uncollected wastes accumulate in the urban areas cause unhygienic conditions and release pollutants that leaches to surface and groundwater.
Rivers Yamuna, Ganga, Gomti, Ghaggar, Chambal, Mahi, Vardha are amongst the other most coliform polluted water bodies in India. For context, coliform must be below 104 MPN/100 ml, preferably absent from water for it to be considered safe for general human use, and for irrigation where coliform may cause disease outbreak from contaminated-water in agriculture.
We need to take steps to reduce the pollution in India so that we can make a better and safer place for our children.

Introduction
Water pollution is a major global problem which requires ongoing evaluation and revision of water resource policy at all levels (international down to individual aquifers and wells). It has been suggested that water pollution is the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases, and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily. An estimated 580 people in India die of water pollution related illness every day. About 90 percent of the water in the cities of China is polluted. As of 2007, half a billion Chinese had no access to safe drinking water. In addition to the acute problems of water pollution in developing countries, developed countries also continue to struggle with pollution problems. For example, in the most recent national report on water quality in the United States, 45 percent of assessed stream miles, 47% of assessed lake acres, and 32 percent of assessed bays and estuarine square miles were classified as polluted. The head of China's national development agency said in 2007 that one quarter the length of China's seven main rivers were so poisoned the water harmed the skin.

When harmful toxins are present in water they are transferred to higher level organisms through the food chain. Heavy metals like lead, mercury, iron, cadmium, aluminum, and magnesium are present in water sources. If these metals are present in the sediment, these reach the food chain through plants and aquatic animals. This causes heavy metal poisoning in the water. Polluted water is a hot bed for diseases. Microbial water pollution can spread infectious diseases such as typhoid and cholera from drinking contaminated water. Water pollutants alter the overall chemistry of the water, causing changes in acidity, conductivity and temperature. These in turn have an effect on the marine life . Heavy rain carries up dirt and silt and deposit them into the water. If the dirt and silt settle in the water body, then these sediments prevent sunlight from reaching aquatic plants. If the sunlight can’t reach the plants, they perish. These sediments also clog up fish gills and suffocate organisms that live on the bottom of the body of the water. If oil is spilled on the water due to accidents, the effects on the ecosystem and the components are harmful. Many animals can get destroyed in case they swallow oil. Things we can do to reduce water pollution DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil, or grease down the sink. Keep a “fat jar” under the sink to collect the fat and discard in the solid waste when full. DO NOT dispose of household chemicals or cleaning agents down the sink or toilet. Avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket. Most tissues, wrappers, dust cloths, and other paper goods should be properly discarded in a wastebasket. DO NOT flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugs down the toilet. Install a water efficient toilet. Run the dishwasher or clothes washer only when you have a full load. This conserves electricity and water. Use the minimum amount of detergent and/or bleach when you are washing clothes or dishes. Use only phosphate-free soaps and detergents. If you do your part to prevent pollution in your area, then you'll be helping to protect water for both yourself and everything else that relies upon this precious resource. Minimize the use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers. DO NOT dispose of these chemicals, motor oil, or other automotive fluids into the sanitary sewer or storm sewer systems. Learn the basics about water pollution, whilst learning about environmental chemistry. The substances mankind throws away have polluted lakes, rivers and even the oceans. The United Nations estimate that around 10% of the world’s people do not have access to clean drinking water. The main problem with this untreated water is that it can carry diseases, such as cholera, that spread through untreated human faeces. This is particularly serious in shanty towns near big cities and in refugee camps. Rivers and streams can also be polluted with diseases from water coming from badly managed rubbish dumps. But human sewage is not the only substance that pollutes our water supplies – most of the other substances humans allow to escape into streams, rivers and the oceans, are more a danger to natural ecosystems than to us directly. Chemical fertilisers are much more soluble in water than organic, manure-based fertilisers, so heavy rain can wash them into streams and lakes, causing eutrophication. The fertilisers cause algae to grow very fast forming a mat on the lake surface, which blocks sunlight from the vegetation deeper down, which then dies. Bacteria feed off the dying vegetation and use up the remaining oxygen supply. Once the oxygen has gone all animal life dies and the lake ecosystem is destroyed. If heavy metals, such as lead mercury and cadmium, get into rivers and lakes many animals will die. Radioactive waste is normally stored above ground in water tanks, waiting for a more permanent underground storage where it has to be safe for millions of years. There are fears that these underground stores could fail and contaminate water courses. Following a nuclear disaster, water courses and the oceans can become dangerously polluted with radioactive waste. During mining and drilling operations to extract minerals from the earth, aquifers, which are underground water courses, can become polluted. Huge amounts of plastic thrown away from ships, and washed out to sea from rubbish dumps on land, have ended up floating in huge islands of waste causing a serious threat to fish, seabirds and other marine animals. Coal and oil fuelled power stations have been responsible, more so in the past, for causing acid rain. Fossil fuel and nuclear power stations need large amounts of water for condensing the steam which drives their turbines. This water is usually cooled on site in the great cooling towers that dominate the skyline of power-stations. Even so the water will be returned to the river or sea warmer than before. Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). Water pollution occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in these bodies of water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities. An estimated of 580 people in India die of water pollution related illness every day. Water pollution is a major environmental issue in India. The largest source of water pollution in India is untreated sewerage. Other sources of pollution include agricultural runoff and unregulated small scale industry. Most rivers, lakes and surface water in India are polluted. A 2007 study finds that discharge of untreated sewage is the single most important cause for pollution of surface and ground water in India. There is a large gap between generation and treatment of domestic waste water in India. The problem is not only that India lacks sufficient treatment capacity but also that the sewage treatment plants that exist do not operate and are not maintained. The majority of the government-owned sewage treatment plants remain closed most of the time due to improper design or poor maintenance or lack of reliable electricity supply to operate the plants, together with absentee employees and poor management. The waste water generated in these areas normally percolates in the soil or evaporates. The uncollected wastes accumulate in the urban areas cause unhygienic conditions and release pollutants that leaches to surface and groundwater. Rivers Yamuna, Ganga, Gomti, Ghaggar, Chambal, Mahi, Vardha are amongst the other most coliform polluted water bodies in India. For context, coliform must be below 104 MPN/100 ml, preferably absent from water for it to be considered safe for general human use, and for irrigation where coliform may cause disease outbreak from contaminated-water in agriculture. We need to take steps to reduce the pollution in India so that we can make a better and safer place for our children. Our future is in our hands... -

In this video Paul Andersen explains how water quality can be degraded by pollutants. Wastewater is the main source of water pollution and can be measure using the BOD (biochemical oxygen demand). Dead zones, cultural eutrophication, disease, and other pollutants are included. A basic description of sewage treatment, septic systems, and water purification is also included.

About this Video:
The major effects of water pollution is the damage to the food chain. When harmful toxins are present in water they are transferred to higher level organisms through the food chain.
Heavy metals like lead, mercury, iron, cadmium, aluminum, and magnesium are present in water sources. If these metals are present in the sediment, these reach the food chain through plants and aquatic animals. This causes heavy metal poisoning in the water.
Polluted water is a hot bed for diseases. Microbial water pollution can spread infectious diseases such as typhoid and cholera from drinking contaminated water.
Water pollutants alter the overall chemistry of the water, causing changes in acidity, conductivity and temperature. These in turn have an effect on the marine life .
Heavy rain carries up dirt and silt and deposit them into the water. If the dirt and silt settle in the water body, then these sediments prevent sunlight from reaching aquatic plants. If the sunlight can’t reach the plants, they perish. These sediments also clog up fish gills and suffocate organisms that live on the bottom of the body of the water.
If oil is spilled on the water due to accidents, the effects on the ecosystem and the components are harmful. Many animals can get destroyed in case they swallow oil.
Things we can do to reduce water pollution
DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil, or grease down the sink. Keep a “fat jar” under the sink to collect the fat and discard in the solid waste when full.
DO NOT dispose of household chemicals or cleaning agents down the sink or toilet.
Avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket. Most tissues, wrappers, dust cloths, and other paper goods should be properly discarded in a wastebasket.
DO NOT flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugs down the toilet.
Install a water efficient toilet.
Run the dishwasher or clothes washer only when you have a full load. This conserves electricity and water.
Use the minimum amount of detergent and/or bleach when you are washing clothes or dishes.
Use only phosphate-free soaps and detergents.
If you do your part to prevent pollution in your area, then you'll be helping to protect water for both yourself and everything else that relies upon this precious resource.
Minimize the use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers. DO NOT dispose of these chemicals, motor oil, or other automotive fluids into the sanitary sewer or storm sewer systems. Both of them end at the river.

The substances mankind throws away have polluted lakes, rivers and even the oceans.
The United Nations estimate that around 10% of the world’s people do not have access to clean drinking water. The main problem with this untreated water is that it can carry diseases, such as cholera, that spread through untreated human faeces. This is particularly serious in shanty towns near big cities and in refugee camps.
Rivers and streams can also be polluted with diseases from water coming from badly managed rubbish dumps. But human sewage is not the only substance that pollutes our water supplies – most of the other substances humans allow to escape into streams, rivers and the oceans, are more a danger to natural ecosystems than to us directly.
Chemical fertilisers are much more soluble in water than organic, manure-based fertilisers, so heavy rain can wash them into streams and lakes, causing eutrophication. The fertilisers cause algae to grow very fast forming a mat on the lake surface, which blocks sunlight from the vegetation deeper down, which then dies. Bacteria feed off the dying vegetation and use up the remaining oxygen supply. Once the oxygen has gone all animal life dies and the lake ecosystem is destroyed.
If heavy metals, such as lead mercury and cadmium, get into rivers and lakes many animals will die.
Radioactive waste is normally stored above ground in water tanks, waiting for a more permanent underground storage where it has to be safe for millions of years. There are fears that these underground stores could fail and contaminate water courses. Following a nuclear disaster, water courses and the oceans can become dangerously polluted with radioactive waste.
During mining and drilling operations to extract minerals from the earth, aquifers, which are underground water courses, can become polluted. Huge amounts of plastic thrown away from ships, and washed out to sea from rubbish dumps on land, have ended up floating in huge islands of waste causing a serious threat to fish, seabirds and other marine animals.
Coal and oil fuelled power stations have been responsible, more so in the past, for causing acid rain.
Fossil fuel and nuclear power stations need large amounts of water for condensing the steam which drives their turbines. This water is usually cooled on site in the great cooling towers that dominate the skyline of power-stations. Even so the water will be returned to the river or sea warmer than before. This can upset the river or sea ecosystems. Although not material pollution this waste heat is a pollutant.

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). Water pollution occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.
Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in these bodies of water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities.

Water pollution is a major environmental issue in India. The largest source of water pollution in India is untreated sewerage. Other sources of pollution include agricultural runoff and unregulated small scale industry. Most rivers, lakes and surface water in India are polluted.
A 2007 study finds that discharge of untreated sewage is the single most important cause for pollution of surface and ground water in India. There is a large gap between generation and treatment of domestic waste water in India. The problem is not only that India lacks sufficient treatment capacity but also that the sewage treatment plants that exist do not operate and are not maintained.
The majority of the government-owned sewage treatment plants remain closed most of the time due to improper design or poor maintenance or lack of reliable electricity supply to operate the plants, together with absentee employees and poor management. The waste water generated in these areas normally percolates in the soil or evaporates. The uncollected wastes accumulate in the urban areas cause unhygienic conditions and release pollutants that leaches to surface and groundwater.
Rivers Yamuna, Ganga, Gomti, Ghaggar, Chambal, Mahi, Vardha are amongst the other most coliform polluted water bodies in India. For context, coliform must be below 104 MPN/100 ml, preferably absent from water for it to be considered safe for general human use, and for irrigation where coliform may cause disease outbreak from contaminated-water in agriculture.
We need to take steps to reduce the pollution in India so that we can make a better and safer place for our children.

Water pollution is serious concern in India yet we give very less attention to it and still the water pollution is going on large scale..
Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies (e.g. lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater). Water pollution occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly discharged into water bodies without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds.
Water pollution affects plants and organisms living in these bodies of water. In almost all cases the effect is damaging not only to individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities.

Narrated by Henry Fonda, this 25 minutes documentary film,Troubled Waters, tells the story of the many forms and sources of water pollution focusing on the Ohio River, but also including places such as Vermont, Maine, Alaska, Missouri, Tenneessee, Washington DC and California. The film highlights community efforts to solve the problem, time factors involved, thermal and chemical pollution and the need for more research in the field of water quality. This unique film was prepared as a report of the Sub-committee on Air and Water Pollution of the Senate Committee on Public Works of the 88th Congress at the behest of the Chairman, Senator Muskie (Maine). It was produced under the guidance of Muskie's Subcommittee staff based on a 1963 staff study on water pollution. That study and this film were helpful in the passage of the Water Quality Act of 1965, during the first month of the 89th Congress. In his February 1965 newsletter to his Maine constituents, Muskie wrote: "I am happy to report that my water pollution abatement bill has become the first piece of Great Society legislation to be adopted by the Senate.'' While the late Edmund Muskie served a variety of important public roles during his esteemed career - Governor, United States Senator, candidate for President, and Secretary of State - he will probably be best remembered as a skillful and accomplished national leader who molded environmental policy from 1963 until 1980, what may be usefully characterized as the formative years of modern American environmental law. During the course of his seventeen-year chairmanship of the United States Senate's Special Subcommittee on Air and Water Pollution (the "Subcommittee"), Chairman Muskie helped move the nation, both politically and intellectually, from a state-centered, decentralized and laissez-faire regime of pollution control laws to a federalized, centralized and rigorous environmental regulatory system. Federal water legislation dates back to the nineteenth century, when Congress enacted the River and Harbor Act of 1886. Recognizing the threat that dirty water posed to the public health and welfare, Congress enacted the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (FWPCA) in 1948, in order to "enhance the quality and value of our water resources and to establish a national policy for the prevention, control and abatement of water pollution." The original Act and its amendments broadened the Federal government's authority in water pollution control. The Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1956 strengthened enforcement provisions by providing for an abatement suit at the request of a State pollution control agency; where health was being endangered, the Federal government no longer had to receive the consent of all States involved. The Federal role was further expanded under the Water Quality Act of 1965. That Act was significantly reorganized and expanded in 1972. The "Clean Water Act" became the Act's common name with amendments in 1977. That Act provided for the setting of water quality standards which are State and Federally enforceable; it became the basis for interstate water quality standards.
