Belly dancing is sexy, fun, and burns up a lot of calories to boot! In this video, belly dancer Irina Akulenko teaches you how to do the belly dance move known as the walking shimmy. You'll be shaking it like Shakira in no time.
So now let's try the "walking hip shimmy". In order to prepare for it, let's keep the knees really bent. Let's think about those hip lifts we did earlier. Nice and slow, lifting one hip at a time. And you want to really feel this in your sides more than pushing through the knees. Just because we're going to use the knees in order to be able to walk. So, try to feel this in your obliques more than anything else. Remember to keep the chest lifted, lower abs tucked no matter what you're doing with your hips. While we're here, try lifting one heel off the floor, but still not compromising the integrity of the shimmy. What that means is that you're not hyper-lifting one side and barely lifting the other. You want to try to keep it as even as possible, even though one foot is slightly higher than the other. Let's try the other side. Lifting the left heel off the floor. Trying to keep the hip shimmy even. Chest lifted and the heel down. Right heel lifted. Now try to lift the foot off the floor. You can either touch it to the ankle of the opposite leg, or let it hover in front. And step back together. Try the other side. Lifting the foot off. Try extending forward. And while you're doing this, try to have a continuous relaxed shimmy no matter what. And place it back down. Let's try that with music. We're going to lift the right heel up. Take a step. Lift the left heel up. And lift the foot. And step. Stepping back. Try to have a continuous relaxed shimmy no matter what. Lifting the chest, shoulders back, arms full of energy. Let's try a little bit faster. Traveling back. And that's how you walk with a shimmy.

Shimmy
A shimmy is a dance move in which the body is held still, except for the shoulders, which are alternated back and forth. When the right shoulder goes back, the left one comes forward. It may help to hold the arms out slightly bent at the elbow, and when the shoulders are moved, keep the hands in the same position. In 1917, a dance-song titled "Shim-Me-Sha-Wabble" by Spencer Williams was published, as was "The Jazz Dance", which included the "Shimmy-She", among others.
"I Wish I Could Shimmy Like My Sister Kate" was an up-tempo jazz dance song, written by Clarence Williams and Armand Piron, and published in 1919 which has been enduringly popular ever since and performed and recorded by many artists.
Flappers often performed the dance in the 1920s. The origin of the name is often attributed to Gilda Gray, a Polish emigrant to America. An anecdote says that when she was asked about her dancing style, she answered, in heavy accent, "I'm shaking my chemise". However, in an interview Gilda denied having said this, and earlier usages of the word are recorded. In the late 1910s others were also attributed as being the "inventor" of the shimmy, including Bee Palmer. Mae West, in her autobiography Goodness Had Nothing to Do with It, claimed to have retitled the "Shimmy-Shawobble" as the Shimmy herself, after seeing the moves in some black nightclubs.

System of a Down
System of a Down, often shortened to SOAD or System, is a four-piece Armenian-American rock band formed in 1994 in Glendale, California, in the United States. The band currently consists of Serj Tankian (lead vocals, keyboards), Daron Malakian (vocals, guitar), Shavo Odadjian (bass, backing vocals) and John Dolmayan (drums).
The band achieved commercial success with the release of five studio albums, three of which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. System of a Down has been nominated for four Grammy Awards, and their song "B.Y.O.B." won the Best Hard Rock Performance of 2006. The group went on hiatus in August 2006 and reunited in November 2010, embarking on a tour for the following three years. System of a Down has sold over 40 million records worldwide.
History
Soil (1992–1994)
Serj Tankian and Daron Malakian attended Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School as children, although due to their eight-year age difference they did not meet until 1992 while working on separate projects at the same recording studio. They formed a band named Soil with Tankian on vocals and keyboards, Malakian on vocals and guitar, Dave Hakopyan (who later played in The Apex Theory/Mt. Helium) on bass and Domingo "Dingo" Laranio on drums. The band hired Shavo Odadjian (another Rose and Alex Pilibos alumnus) as manager, although he eventually joined Soil as rhythm guitarist. In 1994, after only one live show, and one jam session recording, Hakopyan and Laranio left the band, feeling that it was not going anywhere.

Method Man
Clifford Smith (born March 2, 1971), better known by his stage name Method Man, is an American rapper, record producer, and actor. He took his stage name from the 1979 film Method Man. He is perhaps best known as a member of the East Coast hip hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. He is also one half of the hip hop duo Method Man & Redman. In 1996, he won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group, for "I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By", with American R&B singer-songwriter Mary J. Blige.
Method Man has appeared in films such as Belly, How High, Garden State, The Wackness, Venom, Red Tails and The Cobbler. On television, he and frequent collaborator, fellow East Coast rapper Redman, co-starred on the short-lived Fox sitcom Method & Red. He also had a recurring role as Tug Daniels on HBO's Oz and Calvin "Cheese" Wagstaff on the HBO's The Wire.
In 2012, The Source placed him on their list of the Top 50 Lyricists of All Time.
Early life
Born on March 2, 1971, in Staten Island, New York, Smith divided his childhood between his father's Long Island residence and his mother's home in the Park Hill section of Staten Island (colloquially known as Killa Hill). He has two sisters, Terri and Missy.

Belly dancing is sexy, fun, and burns up a lot of calories to boot! In this video, belly dancer Irina Akulenko teaches you how to do the belly dance move known as the walking shimmy. You'll be shaking it like Shakira in no time.
So now let's try the "walking hip shimmy". In order to prepare for it, let's keep the knees really bent. Let's think about those hip lifts we did earlier. Nice and slow, lifting one hip at a time. And you want to really feel this in your sides more than pushing through the knees. Just because we're going to use the knees in order to be able to walk. So, try to feel this in your obliques more than anything else. Remember to keep the chest lifted, lower abs tucked no matter what you're doing with your hips. While we're here, try lifting one heel off the floor, but still not compromising the integrity of the shimmy. What that means is that you're not hyper-lifting one side and barely lifting the other. You want to try to keep it as even as possible, even though one foot is slightly higher than the other. Let's try the other side. Lifting the left heel off the floor. Trying to keep the hip shimmy even. Chest lifted and the heel down. Right heel lifted. Now try to lift the foot off the floor. You can either touch it to the ankle of the opposite leg, or let it hover in front. And step back together. Try the other side. Lifting the foot off. Try extending forward. BIOS:
Dancer JENSUYA began her training in 1973 when most of her childhood was spent overseas immersed in other cultures. In 2002 she began belly dancing with classes, workshops, self-guided study, and more travel to the Middle East. Two years later, she and her husband, musician Robert Peak, founded their music and dance ensemble, TarabRaqs. Since then, Jensuya has produced and performed in hundreds of live music and belly dance shows. With honors bestowed by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the American Turkish Association, and a feature profile on the U.S. Government-funded Alhurra TV network broadcasting to over 24 million viewers in the Middle East, Ms. Carpenter-Peak is on the forefront of Middle Eastern dance in America.
Cinematographer/Filmmaker ROBERT PEAK established his career in 1987 with graphic design in Washington, D.C. He was on the forefront of the budding desktop publishing movement and both catered to a substantial list of design clients and served as expert consultant to government agencies and private firms for effectively using design software. In 1993 undertook a 4-year round-the-world travel and photography expedition with his wife (Jensuya), and subsequently relocated to Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. The studio doors were reopened in 1996, and the firm expanded the services in 2002 with commercial photography, in 2007 with film production, and in 2013 with aerial photography/cinematography.

I am Jensuya and welcome to a Belly Dance Break, your personal time out to better belly dancing in five minutes or less. Our Topic is the Belly Dance Shoulder Shimmy. It's an iconic move that perfectly exemplifies "putting the music on your body." Performed with confident posture and in varying poses, it can reveal spirit and tenacity in your dance. To visualize the basic motion, think of rotating your rib cage around your spinal cord.
So Begin in basic belly dance posture which you can review on another Belly Dance Break. Bend your elbows a little more, and flex your hands as if you're holding yourself in a doorway. Keep your fingers relaxed and your thumbs pulled in. With your abs still engaged, rotate half of your rib cage to the front while you release the other half to the back. Now reverse that motion taking that half to the front and releasing the first half to the back. Repeat this motion, counting the beat as you go, like this.

Some common mistakes that you might encounter are letting your hands drift forward which is easier, but it doesn't reveal the beauty of the shimmy as well. Another common mistake is letting your abs release and your chest caving in. So be sure to keep your abs engaged. And a third common mistake is letting tension build in your shoulders and pulling them up towards your ears. So keep them relaxed.
There's a lot to remember: engage your abs, lift your chest, relax your shoulders, and hold your imaginary door jamb. It'll give you a great workout and lead to a beautiful shimmy. Finally, match the tempo of your shimmy to the instrument that's playing in the music, like this. Voila! The Belly Dance Shoulder Shimmy! Shokrun! Tessekurlar! and Raq on! BIOS:
Dancer JENSUYA began her training in 1973 when most of her childhood was spent overseas immersed in other cultures. In 2002 she began belly dancing with classes, workshops, self-guided study, and more travel to the Middle East. Two years later, she and her husband, musician Robert Peak, founded their music and dance ensemble, TarabRaqs. Since then, Jensuya has produced and performed in hundreds of live music and belly dance shows. With honors bestowed by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the American Turkish Association, and a feature profile on the U.S. Government-funded Alhurra TV network broadcasting to over 24 million viewers in the Middle East, Ms. Carpenter-Peak is on the forefront of Middle Eastern dance in America.
Cinematographer/Filmmaker ROBERT PEAK established his career in 1987 with graphic design in Washington, D.C. He was on the forefront of the budding desktop publishing movement and both catered to a substantial list of design clients and served as expert consultant to government agencies and private firms for effectively using design software. In 1993 undertook a 4-year round-the-world travel and photography expedition with his wife (Jensuya), and subsequently relocated to Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. The studio doors were reopened in 1996, and the firm expanded the services in 2002 with commercial photography, in 2007 with film production, and in 2013 with aerial photography/cinematography.

I am Jensuya and welcome to a Belly Dance Break, your personal time out to better belly dancing in five minutes or less. Our Topic is the Belly Dance Shoulder Shimmy. It's an iconic move that perfectly exemplifies "putting the music on your body." Performed with confident posture and in varying poses, it can reveal spirit and tenacity in your dance. To visualize the basic motion, think of rotating your rib cage around your spinal cord.
So Begin in basic belly dance posture which you can review on another Belly Dance Break. Bend your elbows a little more, and flex your hands as if you're holding yourself in a doorway. Keep your fingers relaxed and your thumbs pulled in. With your abs still engaged, rotate half of your rib cage to the front while you release the other half to the back. Now reverse that motion taking that half to the front and releasing the first half to the back. Repeat this motion, counting the beat as you go, like this.

When you're comfortable at that tempo, double your speed, like this.

When that tempo feels comfortable, double your speed yet again, like this.

Some common mistakes that you might encounter are letting your hands drift forward which is easier, but it doesn't reveal the beauty of the shimmy as well. Another common mistake is letting your abs release and your chest caving in. So be sure to keep your abs engaged. And a third common mistake is letting tension build in your shoulders and pulling them up towards your ears. So keep them relaxed.
There's a lot to remember: engage your abs, lift your chest, relax your shoulders, and hold your imaginary door jamb. It'll give you a great workout and lead to a beautiful shimmy. Finally, match the tempo of your shimmy to the instrument that's playing in the music, like this. Voila! The Belly Dance Shoulder Shimmy! Shokrun! Tessekurlar! and Raq on! And we'll see you at the next Belly Dance Break.
