The Giver is a 1993 American young-adult dystopian novel by Lois Lowry. It is set in a society which at first appears as a utopian society but is revealed to be a dystopian one as the story progresses. The novel follows a boy named Jonas through the 12th and 13th years of his life. The society has eliminated pain and strife by converting to "Sameness," a plan that has also eradicated emotional depth from their lives. Jonas is selected to inherit the position of Receiver of Memory, the person who stores all the past memories of the time before Sameness, as there may be times where one must draw upon the wisdom gained from history to aid the community's decision making. Jonas struggles with concepts of all the new emotions and things introduced to him, and whether they are inherently good, evil, in-between, and if it is even possible to have one without the other. The Community lacks any color, memory, climate and terrain, all in effort to preserve structure, order, and a true sense of equality beyond personal individuality.
Jonas Richard Tomalty (born August 8, 1979 in Montreal), also known as Jonas, is a Juno Award-nominated Canadian rock singer. After releasing two successful studio albums and one compilation under the name Jonas, he is currently performing with his band Jonas & The Massive Attraction, whose first album, Big Slice, was released in 2010.
In order to follow in his blues harmonica playing father's footsteps, the adolescent Jonas joined a choir, allowing him to travel around and hone his skills. Later, he started a rock band called Rubberman with whom he won the first prize in 1999 at CHOM-FM's annual contest "L'Esprit talent" as well as MusiquePlus's "DémoClip" contest. While pursuing his rock career, he formed a blues group called Jonas and the Blues Blooded in 1998.
His first success "Edge of Seventeen" (a cover of the old success of Stevie Nicks) appeared on his gold selling first EP Jonas in 2004. It was soon followed by another hit "Show Me", that permitted him to reach the top of the Québec charts and tour North America with rock legends Van Halen. The success of Jonas earned him two nominations at the Juno Awards of 2006 in the "New Artist of the Year" and "Rock Album of the Year" categories.
A black light, also referred to as a UV-A light, Wood's light, or simply ultraviolet light, is a lamp that emits short wave (UV-A) ultraviolet light and not much visible light. The lamp has a violet filter material, either on the bulb or in a separate glass filter in the lamp housing, which blocks most visible light and allows through UV, so the lamp has a dim violet glow when operating. Black light bulbs which have this filter have a lighting industry designation that includes the letters "BLB".
A second type of bulb, which is also called a black light, produces ultraviolet but does not have the filter material, so it produces more visible light and has a blue color when operating. These are made for use in "bug zapper" insect traps and are identified by the industry designation "BL".
Black light sources may be specially designed fluorescent lamps, mercury vapor lamps, light-emitting diodes, lasers, or incandescent lamps. In medicine, forensics, and some other scientific fields, such a light source is referred to as a Wood's lamp (named after Robert Williams Wood).
Blacklight is the third studio album by Christian rap artist, Tedashii on Reach Records. It was released on iTunes on May 24, 2011, and in stores on May 31, 2011. The album produced singles "Need It Daily" (which later became a music video) and "Riot". The song "Last Goodbye" was made into a music video which was released on May 30, the day after Memorial Day.
According to the official online release, Tedashii did this album with the intent of speaking to "the hearts of believers with the hope of eternity spent with Christ, no longer living in guilt for what has been uncovered in our lives", as found in 2Corinthians 4:16-17. The release ends with the statement: "We can and should live with the end in mind."
When it debuted on May 31, 2011, Blacklight reached No. 1 on the Christian Albums chart, No. 2 on the Gospel Albums chart, No. 8 on the Independent Albums chart, No. 9 on the Rap Albums chart, No. 11 on the Digital Albums chart, and No. 63 on the Billboard 200.
Blacklight (Kandra Freeman), is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character appeared in the MC2 series A-Next. She is the daughter of Derek Freeman and Monica Rambeau aka Photon.
When Kevin Masterson of A-Next was attacked by his old enemies, the "Sons of the Serpent", he was heavily outnumbered, and was surround by people so he couldn't transform into his heroic identity of Thunderstrike. But help arrived in the form of a costumed heroine, called Blacklight (whose costume bore a noticeable resemblance to the costume worn by Photon). Blacklight was able to use her energy manipulation powers to fight the Sons of the Serpent. Despite her apparent newness to the superhero game, she soon showed the Serpents that she was a force to be reckoned with, especially when she demonstrated the power to form solid objects out of darkforce. Kevin was finally able to change into Thunderstrike and help her fight the Serpents. Thunderstrike was very impressed with her performance after the battle was won, and offered her a spot on the A-Next team, but she declined, preferring to work as a solo hero.
