An illiterate mountain man, Kit Carson was fluent in Spanish and five Indian languages; he twice married Native American women, yet led a brutal war against the Navajo. When the West was a mystery to most Americans, Carson mastered it, and his expertise made him not only famous, but also sought after. Eventually, by helping to spur a migration that would change the West forever, he unwittingly became an agent in the destruction of the life he loved.

Part of PBS America's Wild West Week, Emmy Award-winning director Stephen Ives's film profiles Kit Carson, a complex character whose life was one of many contradictions.
Carson's exploits on the American frontier inspired dozens of dime novels, but the stories told in these wildly popular books belied the man behind the myth. Born in Kentucky in 1809, Carson left to seek fame and fortune in the West at an early age, soon gaining a reputation as a trapper and scout. In 1842, he was hired by army lieutenant John C Fremont to accompany him on an expedition to map and survey the West. His expertise made him not only famous but also much in demand, especially in military circles. In 1862 he was ordered to wage war on the nomadic tribes of New Mexico Territory, primarily the Navajo, and to see that they were moved to a reservation in eastern New Mexico. Carson waged a brutally effective campaign, forcing thousands of men, women and children on a journey that survivors would remember as a death march. By helping to spur a migration that would change the West forever, Carson had unwittingly become an agent in the destruction of the life he loved. Combining rich archive material with original re-creations, this film paints a vivid portrait of a man who literally became a legend in his own lifetime.

Kit Carson
Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson (December 24, 1809 – May 23, 1868) was an American frontiersman. The few paying jobs he had during his lifetime included mountain man (fur trapper), wilderness guide, Indian agent, and American Army officer. Carson became a frontier legend in his own lifetime via biographies and news articles. Exaggerated versions of his exploits were the subject of dime novels.
Carson left home in rural present-day Missouri at age 16 to become a mountain man and trapper in the West. In the 1830s, he accompanied Ewing Young on an expedition to Mexican California and joined fur trapping expeditions into the Rocky Mountains. He lived among and married into the Arapaho and Cheyenne tribes.
In the 1840s, he was hired as a guide by John C. Fremont. Fremont's expedition covered much of California, Oregon, and the Great Basin area. Fremont mapped and wrote reports and commentaries on the Oregon Trail to assist and encourage westward-bound American pioneers. Carson achieved national fame through Fremont's accounts of his expeditions.

Many of the wonderful old tv shows like Kit Carson have fallen into public domain . This is a copy of the show we own in our collection . Kit Carson rides through the west with his sidekick El Toro . Together they battle outlaws and fight for justice. The Kit Carson TV show western was really made mostly with kids as the viewing audience in mind . Keeping that in mind while watching really helps keep the show entertaining. We plan on posting all the episodes we can . Lord willing we will locate the whole series of 103 or there may be 104 episodes. One episode has my friend Don Reynolds in the series and We plan on getting together and watching the episode and doing a bit of commentary on that one also . Thanks for watching . Bob

Part of PBS America's Wild West Week, Emmy Award-winning director Stephen Ives's film profiles Kit Carson, a complex character whose life was one of many contradictions.
Carson's exploits on the American frontier inspired dozens of dime novels, but the stories told in these wildly popular books belied the man behind the myth. Born in Kentucky in 1809, Carson left to seek fame and fortune in the West at an early age, soon gaining a reputation as a trapper and scout. In 1842, he was hired by army lieutenant John C Fremont to accompany him on an expedition to map and survey the West. His expertise made him not only famous but also much in demand, especially in military circles. In 1862 he was ordered to wage war on the nomadic tribes of New Mexico Territory, primarily the Navajo, and to see that they were moved to a reservation in eastern New Mexico. Carson waged a brutally effective campaign, forcing thousands of men, women and children on a journey that survivors would remember as a death march. By helping to spur a migration that would change the West forever, Carson had unwittingly become an agent in the destruction of the life he loved. Combining rich archive material with original re-creations, this film paints a vivid portrait of a man who literally became a legend in his own lifetime.
