A meteorite is a solid piece of debris from a source, such as an asteroid or a comet, that originates in outer space and survives its impact with the Earth's surface. It is called a meteoroid before its impact. A meteorite's size can range from small to extremely large. When a meteoroid enters the atmosphere, friction, pressure, and chemical interactions with the atmospheric gases cause it to heat up and radiate that energy, thus forming a fireball, also known as a meteor or shooting/falling star. A bolide is either an extraterrestrial body that collides with the Earth, or an exceptionally bright, fireball-like meteor regardless of whether it ultimately impacts the surface.
More generally, a meteorite on the surface of any celestial body is a natural object that has come from outer space. Meteorites have been found on the moon and Mars. Meteorites that are recovered after being observed as they transit the atmosphere or impact the Earth are called meteorite fall. All other meteorites are known as finds. As of February 2010, there are approximately 1,086 witnessed falls having specimens in the world's collections. There are more than 38,660 well-documented meteorite finds.

Падение и взрыв метеорного тела в атмосфере в окрестностях Челябинска на высоте 15-25 км. утром 15 февраля 2013 года примерно в 9.25 по местному времени (UTC+6). ru.wikipedia http://bit.ly/XjrtJa On 15 February 2013, an object entered Earth's atmosphere over Russia at approximately 09.25 YEKT (03.25 UTC), becoming a fireball. Moving at a speed of 15 km/s to 18 km/s (34000 mph to 40000 mph), it passed over the southern Ural region and exploded over Chelyabinsk Oblast. The object's air burst occurred at an altitude between 15 and 25 km (9.3 and 16 mi) above the ground. The total energy released was equivalent to nearly 500 kilotons of TNT, which would make it 20-30 times more powerful than the atomic bombs detonated at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Being significantly smaller than objects that ar...

I saw a little red meteorite
Fall from the sky last night
Picked it up and it burned my hand
But I said, "That's all right."
Meteorite, all right all right
Meteorite, that's right
Meteorite, all right all right
Meteorite, that's right
I took it home and put it down
In a bucket full of ice
I don't believe it's radioactive
It looks too cute and nice
Meteorite, all right all right
Meteorite, that's right
Meteorite, all right all right
Meteorite, that's right
Meteorites are out of site
But this ones place is in outer space
And if you wanna know, I'll tell you why
It's 'cause radiation makes you die
These days I don't feel too good
I think I'm going blind
The doctor says I got to lose it fast
But I can't leave it behind
'Cause it's my meteorite, all right all right
Meteorite, that's right
Meteorite, all right all right
