Efforts on to exceed plantation target

Varanasi: The forest officials of Varanasi, Azamgarh and Mirzapur divisions are trying to exceed the target fixed by their departments for July 11 plantation in the state.

Varanasi had been given the target of planting 2.05 lakh saplings. Against this target, the division has completed the preparations for the plantation of 2.06 lakhs saplings. Kashi Wildlife division's DFO Manoj Kumar Sonekar also disclosed that against the target of 9.60 lakhs, the division has ensured creating 1,000 more ditches for plantation. The DFOs in other districts made similar claims.

As many as 62 sites in eight blocks of Varanasi had been identified where saplings are being sent from the department's nurseries. Maximum plantation would be done in Badagaon and Pindra blocks, from where 5,607 full grown trees were chopped recently for the upgradation of Varanasi-Lucknow NH-56.


The officials said that to keep the mortality rate of saplings down, the department has ensured proper fencing and irrigation facility.


He said that out of total saplings, about 50% are of timber while rest of other categories. In 2008, UP had set a record of plantation of one crore saplings in a day but Maharashtra broke this record by ensuring plantation of 1.50 crore saplings in a day.


After few years of it, Malaysia set a new world record by ensuring plantation of 4 crore saplings in a day. He said that people in the district are also being mobilized to take part in the proposed plantation drive.
