BREAKING NEWS: Emotional David Cameron stands down as PM hours after voters trigger political earthquake by backing Brexit and says: 'The will of the British people must be respected.
David Cameron resigned today after his devastating defeat in the EU referendum. The Prime Minister will stay in post into around October before a new Prime Minister is chosen to 'captain the ship' as the UK prepares for Brexit in a new dawn in its politics, he said. Mr Cameron's voice broke as he spoke outside Downing Street this morning with his wife Samantha in tears next to him. The Brexit campaign officially passed the winning post in the EU referendum at around 6am today, triggering a political earthquake and panic in the markets. Nigel Farage earlier declared it to be 'independence day' and a 'victory for real people' as the Leave campaign racked up votes across England and Wales - defying the verdict of London, Scotland and most of the big cities. The Pound - which soared in value earlier after Nigel Farage admitted he thought Brexit had lost - has nose-dived against US dollar to its lowest level for 31 years. And more than £100billion was wiped off the FTSE 100 within minutes as markets opened on Friday as Britain's decision caused turmoil across global exchanges.
Lib Dem former Cabinet minister Sir Vince Cable said Mr Cameron's authority would be 'completely gone' in the event of a Leave win and he would have to stand down.
He described holding the referendum as a 'very bad call' by the Prime Minister, who failed to understand what happens 'when you just throw the cards in the air'.
But senior Tories rallied round in an effort to protect the PM. Cabinet minister Chris Grayling - a Brexit backer - said: 'It would be an absolute nonsense if David Cameron felt, having given the country that choice, if they take the decision he couldn't carry on the job. We are completely behind him staying, we want him to stay and that letter is a statement of commitment to his leadership.
Work and Pensions Secretary Stephen Crabb said he did not think the Prime Minister 'could have done any more' and it was 'absolutely essential' that he remains in No 10.
He said: 'There isn't anybody else around the Cabinet table or outside the Cabinet, for that matter, or in any of the other political parties who can give this country the kind of leadership skills and abilities that David Cameron can at this, what is going to be very challenging weeks and months for the country.'
He added: 'I just think there is a disconnect with the white working class. We didn't get our core messages across to them.
'When we tried to explain to them just how important the European Single Market was to their jobs, their livelihoods, we didn't quite land those messages successfully.
'And I think that is one of the themes that is emerging this evening is that old industrial white working class areas clearly haven't bought the message that we have tried hard to communicate.
'In those areas which are strongly perhaps white working class there will be a strong vote for Out and that's something as a Government we need to respond to.
'Clearly, I think one of the features of this referendum are some of those social divisions and clearly as a Government, as a political class, all parties, we need to show that we're responding to that.

POST CABINET PRESS BRIEFING SUMMARY
The Honourable Anthony Garcia, Minister of Education and the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Culture, Community Development and the Arts, addressed members of the media during the Post Cabinet Press Briefing today (Thursday 23rd June, 2016) at the Office of the Prime Minister, St. Clair, Port of Spain.
Minister Garcia announced that Cabinet has agreed to grant fifteen (15) post graduate scholarships. To be eligible for these scholarships, students must graduate with First Class Honours at the Bachelor’s level.
These scholarships will extend to the five (5) universities in the region including the University of the West Indies (UWI), the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) and the University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) and recipients will be able to pursue their studies up to the Doctorate level.
The Minister of Education also announced that Cabinet has agreed on a 10% top up of school text books from the primary school level (infant) through to the secondary school level (Form 6).
This follows an audit which was carried out by the ministry which revealed that there was an excess of textbooks in the system - despite claims that students were forced to go without books.
The Minister of Culture, Community Development and the Arts also announced the Government’s plan to support Eid celebrations. Fifty (50) organisations will receive funding for the observance of Eid-ul-Fitr which will be celebrated on July 6th 2016. These organisations would also have received funding last year.
Approximately three (3) million dollars will be provided in funding. Minister Gadsby-Dolly also noted that additional grants will be considered by the ministry.

Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Balram Yadav was on Tuesday sacked by Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, for apparently facilitating the merger of Quami Ekta Dal (QED) of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari with the ruling Samajwadi Party.

Though no official reason has been cited for the removal, SP leaders said the chief minister was "unhappy" with Balram Yadav for facilitating the controversial merger of QED with SP.

"Balram Yadav, holding charge of Secondary Education ministry, has been removed (from the Council of Ministers) by the Chief Minister," Though no official reason has been cited for the removal, SP leaders said the chief minister was "unhappy" with Balram Yadav for facilitating the controversial merger of QED with SP. -

Mr Cameron's voice broke as he spoke outside Downing Street this morning with his wife Samantha in tears next to him. The Brexit campaign officially passed the winning post in the EU referendum at around 6am today, triggering a political earthquake and panic in the markets. Nigel Farage earlier declared it to be 'independence day' and a 'victory for real people' as the Leave campaign racked up votes across England and Wales - defying the verdict of London, Scotland and most of the big cities. The Pound - which soared in value earlier after Nigel Farage admitted he thought Brexit had lost - has nose-dived against US dollar to its lowest level for 31 years. And more than £100billion was wiped off the FTSE 100 within minutes as markets opened on Friday as Britain's decision caused turmoil across global exchanges.
Lib Dem former Cabinet minister Sir Vince Cable said Mr Cameron's authority would be 'completely gone' in the event of a Leave win and he would have to stand down.
He described holding the referendum as a 'very bad call' by the Prime Minister, who failed to understand what happens 'when you just throw the cards in the air'.
But senior Tories rallied round in an effort to protect the PM. Cabinet minister Chris Grayling - a Brexit backer - said: 'It would be an absolute nonsense if David Cameron felt, having given the country that choice, if they take the decision he couldn't carry on the job. We are completely behind him staying, we want him to stay and that letter is a statement of commitment to his leadership.
Work and Pensions Secretary Stephen Crabb said he did not think the Prime Minister 'could have done any more' and it was 'absolutely essential' that he remains in No 10.
He said: 'There isn't anybody else around the Cabinet table or outside the Cabinet, for that matter, or in any of the other political parties who can give this country the kind of leadership skills and abilities that David Cameron can at this, what is going to be very challenging weeks and months for the country.'
He added: 'I just think there is a disconnect with the white working class. We didn't get our core messages across to them.
'When we tried to explain to them just how important the European Single Market was to their jobs, their livelihoods, we didn't quite land those messages successfully.
'And I think that is one of the themes that is emerging this evening is that old industrial white working class areas clearly haven't bought the message that we have tried hard to communicate.
'In those areas which are strongly perhaps white working class there will be a strong vote for Out and that's something as a Government we need to respond to.
'Clearly, I think one of the features of this referendum are some of those social divisions and clearly as a Government, as a political class, all parties, we need to show that we're responding to that.
