A propaganda film from 1943 made by Gainsborough Films and directed by Frank Lauder and Sidney Gilliatt, this documentary-style home-front movie has a .
An all too rarely seen film, enjoyable and involving , if slightly soapy, with many strands and interwoven stories to tell about life in a local hospital - a far cry from .
This rare film is unusual and interesting. Filmed in 1946 it wasnt released until two years later because of trouble with the censor - though on todays viewing .
Titles (over exterior shots of Covent Garden, London) read 'Now Pathetone is taking you over to - THE PLAYERS' THEATRE Covent Garden - London's quaintest little theatre, for a glance at an old time memory "Ridgeway's Joys"'.
Narrator describes that it is one of the smallest theatres "though great in historic interest. Once upon a time it was Evan's Song and Supper Rooms... Later the home of the National Sporting Club".
We see four men in evening dress sing a comic version of 'As I Went Down To Strawberry Fair'. (I think one of these is actor Alec Clunes - SL). Narrator describes it as a 'glee'. The Chairman announces that "glasses must be emptied to preserve the licence". We see him drinking his beer.
Megs Jenkins appears on stage dressed as a waif, accompanied by a flurry of false snow and sings 'Please Sell No More Drink To My Father' - a temperance song.
Eve Lynd then sings a song about 'The City Toff'. She wears a showgirls costume and carries a long cane. It tells of a man "who knows the way to do La Di Dah". Then the whole company joins arms on stage for the finale, 'Dear Old Pals'.
Throughout the item there are cutaways to the audience watching and drinking. Seen amongst them and mentioned by the narrator are Dorothy L Sayers, the crime writer and Hermione Gingold.

I present you with four adaptations of a famous scene within The Turn of the Screw. In this scene, the governess sees Peter Quint for a second time, but on a more dangerous level. This leads into her conversation with Mrs. Grose regarding the stranger but I will get to that actual scene another day.
The Innocents (1961) w/Deborah Kerr and Megs Jenkins - Most TOTS fans view this as the definitive version of TOTS. With a well-written script (based on the play of the same name by William Archibald, adapted from the James' novella) and well-rounded cast, it does not suprise me that this is a favorite among most people familar with the story. It's black and white cinematography makes it all the more spookier. I would consider it one of my favorite versions. My only real gripe (and most will probably agree with me) is I wasn't entirely convinced by Deborah Kerr as the governess. In the novella, she is 20 years old and Kerr was 40 when this movie was made. Now, that being said...this is still one of the strongest adaptations out there. One could even argue that they purposely made her older (or simply made her older because they wanted to go with Kerr in the role). Towards the end of the film, Miles calls her an old hag...
The Turn of the Screw (1974) w/Lynn Redgrave and Megs Jenkins - Yes, this is the televisioned version directed by Dan Curtis of Dark Shadows fame. Honestly, you can tell it was by the same director because he utilizes a lot of the same DS themes (composed by Robert Cobert) and the same campy style. This is not particularly one of my favorite versions. I have a few issues with it but it tries. Props to Mr. Dan Curtis for being such a fan of this story. As some of you may know, he used it within Dark Shadows...not once but twice. And you may have already noticed that Megs Jenkins is back to reprise her role of Mrs. Grose. In my opinion, she was the only one who really understood her character (not suprising since she already knew the part). Another bit of trivia is that Michael Redgrave, Lynn's father had portrayed the Uncle in The Innocents.
The Turn of the Screw (1992) w/Patsy Kensit and Stephane Audran - I really like this version. Yes, the setting has changed from the late 19th century to the 60's (they never tell us an exact date) but I think it works for the most part. The acting is good and it is a fairly true adaptation to the novella. The music is atmospheric and fits well with the images on screen. If I had to choose a favorite "modernized" version of TOTS, then this would definitely be it. It also keeps the concept of the frame device...with the narrator telling the story of the governess. I really like how they go back and forth with that. I thought it was very effective and creative. As far as I know, this is the only film that has kept that element in tact.
The Turn of the Screw (1999) w/Jodhi May and Pam Ferris - This is part of the Masterpiece Theatre collection and is truly faithful (as most Masterpiece Theatre productions are) to the James' story. This particular version is fascinating because (like The Innoncents) it maintains that aspect of TOTS that makes it such a great story, it's ambiguity. Are the ghosts real or are they in the imagination of a sexually repressed governess? Next to The Innocents, this is perhaps the strongest adaptation I have ever seen which makes me love it even more. A great deal of the novella's dialogue remains in tact which also makes me a fan. If you'd like to check this version out, someone actually has uploaded it to youtube BUT I would highly recommend you buying it instead. It is readily on dvd from amazon.com.
I have many more film adaptations of TOTS and I plan on making more vids where I compare various scenes and review. Keep in mind that these are my opinions. Feel free to disagree but please let's not get into a nasty argument over it. I do love a good debate so please let me know (based on these clips) which film you thought was the best.
If you would like to see another clip of one of these films (or other TOTS versions), please let me know but remember I will not upload the whole movie. I'd rather keep my channel on YT and continue to educate people on Henry James' TOTS rather than risk getting my account removed.

Megs Jenkins
Muguette Mary "Megs" Jenkins (21 April 1917 – 5 October 1998) was an English character actress who appeared in British films and television programmes.
Life and career
Jenkins was born in Birkenhead, Cheshire, the daughter of a construction engineer. She originally trained to be a ballet dancer. Although born in England, she often played Welsh characters.
She made her first noticeable film debut in Millions Like Us (1943) as the Welsh room-mate and confidante of the main character (played by Patricia Roc). She appeared in such classics as Green for Danger (1946), The History of Mr. Polly (1949), The Cruel Sea (1953), and Oliver! (1968). She played the housekeeper Mrs Grose in two adaptations of Henry James's The Turn of the Screw: the film The Innocents (1961), and a 1974 television adaptation. She frequently played comic roles, and in later life was a regular in the sitcom, Oh No, It's Selwyn Froggitt!, and the children's series, Worzel Gummidge.
From 1933, Jenkins also had a long stage career, and appeared in several plays by Emlyn Williams. In 1956 she won the Clarence Derwent Award for best supporting performance in Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge.

Personal Affair is a 1953 British drama film directed by Anthony Pelissier and starring Gene Tierney, Leo Genn, and Glynis Johns. It was made at Pinewood Studios by Two Cities Films.
Plot summary
Glynis Johns plays Barbara Vining, a teen-age student that has an unrequited crush on her Latin teacher, Stephen Barlow (Leo Genn). When Barlow's wife Kay (GeneTierney) finds out about this, she confronts Barbara, who is humiliated and runs off. Stephen chases after her to try to calm her down near a local river.
Barbara does not return home to her parents for three days, during which time Stephen is accused by the community of causing her death without any evidence, causing him to lose his job and nearly his marriage. Walter Fitzgerald and Megs Jenkins play her parents Henry and Vi, and Pamela Brown plays her spinster Aunt Evelyn, who lives with the family and with her gossip and innuendo, makes the situation worse.

Leo Genn
Leo John Genn (9 August 1905 – 26 January 1978) was a British stage and film actor and barrister.
Early life and family
Genn was born at 144 Kyverdale Road, Stamford Hill, Hackney, London, the son of Woolfe (William) Genn, a jewellery salesman, and Rachel Genn née Asserson. His parents were both Jewish.
Genn attended the City of London School and studied law at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, qualifying as a barrister in 1928. He ceased practising as a lawyer soon after World War II. On 14 May 1933, Genn married Marguerite van Praag, a casting director at Ealing Studios. They had no children.
Career
Theatre career
Genn's theatrical debut was in 1930 in A Marriage has been Disarranged at the Devonshire Park Theatre, Eastbourne and then at the Royalty Theatre in Dean Street, London. Actor/manager Leon M. Lion had engaged him simultaneously as an actor and attorney. In 1933 he appeared in Ballerina by Rodney Ackland. Between September 1934 and March 1936, Leo Genn was a member of the Old Vic Company where he appeared in many productions of Shakespeare. In 1937 he was Horatio in Tyrone Guthrie's production of Hamlet, with Laurence Olivier as Hamlet, in Elsinore, Denmark. In 1938, Genn appeared in the theatrical hit, The Flashing Stream by Charles Langbridge Morgan and went with the show to America and Broadway. His many other stage performances included Lillian Hellman's Another Part of the Forest, 12 Angry Men, The Devil's Advocate, Maugham's The Sacred Flame. In 1959 Genn gave a reading in Chichester Cathedral.

Glynis Johns
Glynis Johns (born 5 October 1923) is a British stage and film actress, dancer, pianist and singer. She is best known for creating the role of Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music on Broadway, for which she won a Tony Award, and for playing Winifred Banks in Walt Disney's musical motion picture box office smash Mary Poppins. In both roles, she originated songs written specifically for her, including "Send in the Clowns", composed by Stephen Sondheim, and "Sister Suffragette", written by the Sherman Brothers.
Early life
Johns was born in Pretoria, South Africa, the daughter of Alys Maude (née Steele-Payne; died 1971), a pianist, and Mervyn Johns (1899–1992), the British stage and film actor. Her roots are in West Wales, and she was born in Pretoria while her parents were performing on tour there. She attended Clifton High School in Bristol for a short time. Her ancestors on the Johns side are recorded as living at the farm Glanmorlais Uchaf, Trimsaran, Carmarthenshire in 1701.

Gene Tierney
Gene Eliza Tierney (November 19, 1920 – November 6, 1991) was an American film and stage actress. Acclaimed as a great beauty, she became established as a leading lady. Tierney was best known for her portrayal of the title character in the film Laura (1944), and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Ellen Berent Harland in Leave Her to Heaven (1945).
Tierney's other roles include Martha Strable Van Cleve in Heaven Can Wait (1943), Isabel Bradley Maturin in The Razor's Edge (1946), Lucy Muir in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Ann Sutton in Whirlpool (1949), Maggie Carleton McNulty in The Mating Season (1951), and Anne Scott in The Left Hand of God (1955).
Early life
Tierney was born in Brooklyn, New York, the daughter of Howard Sherwood Tierney and Belle Lavina Taylor. She was named after a beloved uncle, who died young. She had an elder brother, Howard Sherwood “Butch” Tierney, Jr., and a younger sister, Patricia “Pat” Tierney. Their father was a successful insurance broker of Irish descent, their mother a former physical education instructor.

It's black and white cinematography makes it all the more spookier. I would consider it one of my favorite versions. My only real gripe (and most will probably agree with me) is I wasn't entirely convinced by Deborah Kerr as the governess. In the novella, she is 20 years old and Kerr was 40 when this movie was made. Now, that being said...this is still one of the strongest adaptations out there. One could even argue that they purposely made her older (or simply made her older because they wanted to go with Kerr in the role). Towards the end of the film, Miles calls her an old hag... The Turn of the Screw (1974) w/Lynn Redgrave and Megs Jenkins - Yes, this is the televisioned version directed by Dan Curtis of Dark Shadows fame. Honestly, you can tell it was by the same director because he utilizes a lot of the same DS themes (composed by Robert Cobert) and the same campy style. This is not particularly one of my favorite versions. I have a few issues with it but it tries. Props to Mr. Dan Curtis for being such a fan of this story. As some of you may know, he used it within Dark Shadows...not once but twice. And you may have already noticed that Megs Jenkins is back to reprise her role of Mrs. Grose. In my opinion, she was the only one who really understood her character (not suprising since she already knew the part). Another bit of trivia is that Michael Redgrave, Lynn's father had portrayed the Uncle in The Innocents. The Turn of the Screw (1992) w/Patsy Kensit and Stephane Audran - I really like this version. Yes, the setting has changed from the late 19th century to the 60's (they never tell us an exact date) but I think it works for the most part. The acting is good and it is a fairly true adaptation to the novella. The music is atmospheric and fits well with the images on screen. If I had to choose a favorite "modernized" version of TOTS, then this would definitely be it. It also keeps the concept of the frame device...with the narrator telling the story of the governess. I really like how they go back and forth with that. I thought it was very effective and creative. As far as I know, this is the only film that has kept that element in tact. The Turn of the Screw (1999) w/Jodhi May and Pam Ferris - This is part of the Masterpiece Theatre collection and is truly faithful (as most Masterpiece Theatre productions are) to the James' story. This particular version is fascinating because (like The Innoncents) it maintains that aspect of TOTS that makes it such a great story, it's ambiguity. Are the ghosts real or are they in the imagination of a sexually repressed governess? Next to The Innocents, this is perhaps the strongest adaptation I have ever seen which makes me love it even more. A great deal of the novella's dialogue remains in tact which also makes me a fan. If you'd like to check this version out, someone actually has uploaded it to youtube BUT I would highly recommend you buying it instead. It is readily on dvd from amazon.com. I have many more film adaptations of TOTS and I plan on making more vids where I compare various scenes and review. Keep in mind that these are my opinions. Feel free to disagree but please let's not get into a nasty argument over it. I do love a good debate so please let me know (based on these clips) which film you thought was the best. If you would like to see another clip of one of these films (or other TOTS versions), please let me know but remember I will not upload the whole movie. I'd rather keep my channel on YT and continue to educate people on Henry James' TOTS rather than risk getting my account removed. -TOTSenthusiast -

Quint at the Window: A comparison of 4 different film versions of TOTS
I present you with four adaptations of a famous scene within The Turn of the Screw. In this scene, the governess sees Peter Quint for a second time, but on a more dangerous level. This leads into her conversation with Mrs. Grose regarding the stranger but I will get to that actual scene another day. The Innocents (1961) w/Deborah Kerr and Megs Jenkins - Most TOTS fans view this as the definitive version of TOTS. With a well-written script (based on the play of the same name by William Archibald, adapted from the James' novella) and well-rounded cast, it does not suprise me that this is a favorite among most people familar with the story. I present you with four adaptations of a famous scene within The Turn of the Screw. In this scene, the governess sees Peter Quint for a second time, but on a more dangerous level. This leads into her conversation with Mrs. Grose regarding the stranger but I will get to that actual scene another day.
The Innocents (1961) w/Deborah Kerr and Megs Jenkins - Most TOTS fans view this as the definitive version of TOTS. With a well-written script (based on the play of the same name by William Archibald, adapted from the James' novella) and well-rounded cast, it does not suprise me that this is a favorite among most people familar with the story. It's black and white cinematography makes it all the more spookier. I would consider it one of my favorite versions. My only real gripe (and most will probably agree with me) is I wasn't entirely convinced by Deborah Kerr as the governess. In the novella, she is 20 years old and Kerr was 40 when this movie was made. Now, that being said...this is still one of the strongest adaptations out there. One could even argue that they purposely made her older (or simply made her older because they wanted to go with Kerr in the role). Towards the end of the film, Miles calls her an old hag...
The Turn of the Screw (1974) w/Lynn Redgrave and Megs Jenkins - Yes, this is the televisioned version directed by Dan Curtis of Dark Shadows fame. Honestly, you can tell it was by the same director because he utilizes a lot of the same DS themes (composed by Robert Cobert) and the same campy style. This is not particularly one of my favorite versions. I have a few issues with it but it tries. Props to Mr. Dan Curtis for being such a fan of this story. As some of you may know, he used it within Dark Shadows...not once but twice. And you may have already noticed that Megs Jenkins is back to reprise her role of Mrs. Grose. In my opinion, she was the only one who really understood her character (not suprising since she already knew the part). Another bit of trivia is that Michael Redgrave, Lynn's father had portrayed the Uncle in The Innocents.
The Turn of the Screw (1992) w/Patsy Kensit and Stephane Audran - I really like this version. Yes, the setting has changed from the late 19th century to the 60's (they never tell us an exact date) but I think it works for the most part. The acting is good and it is a fairly true adaptation to the novella. The music is atmospheric and fits well with the images on screen. If I had to choose a favorite "modernized" version of TOTS, then this would definitely be it. It also keeps the concept of the frame device...with the narrator telling the story of the governess. I really like how they go back and forth with that. I thought it was very effective and creative. As far as I know, this is the only film that has kept that element in tact.
The Turn of the Screw (1999) w/Jodhi May and Pam Ferris - This is part of the Masterpiece Theatre collection and is truly faithful (as most Masterpiece Theatre productions are) to the James' story. This particular version is fascinating because (like The Innoncents) it maintains that aspect of TOTS that makes it such a great story, it's ambiguity. Are the ghosts real or are they in the imagination of a sexually repressed governess? Next to The Innocents, this is perhaps the strongest adaptation I have ever seen which makes me love it even more. A great deal of the novella's dialogue remains in tact which also makes me a fan. If you'd like to check this version out, someone actually has uploaded it to youtube BUT I would highly recommend you buying it instead. It is readily on dvd from amazon.com.
I have many more film adaptations of TOTS and I plan on making more vids where I compare various scenes and review. Keep in mind that these are my opinions. Feel free to disagree but please let's not get into a nasty argument over it. I do love a good debate so please let me know (based on these clips) which film you thought was the best.

Sinopsis

Quattro storie da brivido dalla Amicus, la celebre casa di produzione inglese specializzata in horror a episodi.
Un medico si reca in un istituto psichiatrico in cerca di lavoro. Qua apprende che il primario dell'ospedale, dopo essere impazzito è stato ricoverato insieme agli altri pazienti. Il nuovo direttore decide quindi di lanciargli una sfida: il dottore sarà assunto se riuscirà a identificare l'ormai folle Dottor Starr che, sotto mentite spoglie, si comporta esattamente come gli altri pazienti del manicomio. Così, il nuovo arrivato decide di parlare con i malati dell'istituto per capire chi possa essere il dottore e, da questo filo conduttore, partono quattro storie che riguardano altrettanti ospiti della struttura.
Nel primo episodio, un uomo dopo aver fatto a pezzi la moglie, deve combattere con gli arti recisi della consorte che, usciti dal frigorifero, non gli danno tregua. Testa, gambe e braccia si muovono in maniera autonoma per tormentarlo, costringendolo a passare una notte di terrore.
La seconda storia ha come protagonista un sarto, che un giorno riceve la visita di un misterioso signore (Peter Cushing) che gli fa una strana richiesta: l'artigiano dovrà confezionargli un vestito realizzato con una stoffa particolare. Il sarto farà il suo lavoro, ma il misterioso vestito, una volta realizzato, si rivelerà in grado di risvegliare i morti.
Il terzo segmento riguarda una ragazza (Charlotte Rampling) ossessionata da un'amica. Verrà fuori una storia di schizofrenia, in cui la folle protagonista rimane vittima di uno sdoppiamento di personalità che la spingerà perfino a uccidere.
Infine, facciamo la conoscenza di un misterioso dottore che afferma di aver donato la vita a alcuni manichini. Ovviamente non viene creduto (ci troviamo pur sempre in un manicomio), ma quando il giovane interlocutore si accorgerà che i pupazzi sono in grado di muoversi autonomamente e che all'interno sono dotati di sangue e organi vitali dovrà ricredersi...
Riuscirà il giovane a individuare fra questi pazienti il folle luminare? Lui forse no, ma lo spettatore sì, perché la soluzione non è poi così difficile. C'è da dire che tutte le storie sono però piuttosto originali e, una volta tanto, vengono lasciati da parte vampiri e lupi mannari per dare spazio a spunti abbastanza fantasiosi. LA MORTE DIETRO IL CANCELLO non è un capolavoro, ma il risultato è ben sopra la sufficienza.

The Innocents is a 1961 British supernatural gothic horror film directed and produced in CinemaScope by Jack Clayton, and starring Deborah Kerr, Michael Redgrave and Megs Jenkins. Based on the novella The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, the plot follows a governess who watches over two children and comes to fear that the house is haunted by ghosts and that the two children are being possessed. The title of the film was taken from William Archibald's stage adaptation of James' novella. Falling within the subgenre of psychological horror, the film achieves its effects through lighting, music and direction rather than conventional shocks. Its atmosphere was created by cinematographer Freddie Francis, who employed deep focus in many scenes, as well as bold, minimal lighting. It was partly shot on location at the Gothic mansion of Sheffield Park in Sussex.
The Innocents pioneered the use of synthesised electronic sound, generated by Daphne Oram.

Quint at the Window: A comparison of 4 different film versions of TOTS
I present you with four adaptations of a famous scene within The Turn of the Screw. In this scene, the governess sees Peter Quint for a second time, but on a more dangerous level. This leads into her conversation with Mrs. Grose regarding the stranger but I will get to that actual scene another day. The Innocents (1961) w/Deborah Kerr and Megs Jenkins - Most TOTS fans view this as the definitive version of TOTS. With a well-written script (based on the play of the same name by William Archibald, adapted from the James' novella) and well-rounded cast, it does not suprise me that this is a favorite among most people familar with the story. I present you with four adaptations of a famous scene within The Turn of the Screw. In this scene, the governess sees Peter Quint for a second time, but on a more dangerous level. This leads into her conversation with Mrs. Grose regarding the stranger but I will get to that actual scene another day.
The Innocents (1961) w/Deborah Kerr and Megs Jenkins - Most TOTS fans view this as the definitive version of TOTS. With a well-written script (based on the play of the same name by William Archibald, adapted from the James' novella) and well-rounded cast, it does not suprise me that this is a favorite among most people familar with the story. It's black and white cinematography makes it all the more spookier. I would consider it one of my favorite versions. My only real gripe (and most will probably agree with me) is I wasn't entirely convinced by Deborah Kerr as the governess. In the novella, she is 20 years old and Kerr was 40 when this movie was made. Now, that being said...this is still one of the strongest adaptations out there. One could even argue that they purposely made her older (or simply made her older because they wanted to go with Kerr in the role). Towards the end of the film, Miles calls her an old hag...
The Turn of the Screw (1974) w/Lynn Redgrave and Megs Jenkins - Yes, this is the televisioned version directed by Dan Curtis of Dark Shadows fame. Honestly, you can tell it was by the same director because he utilizes a lot of the same DS themes (composed by Robert Cobert) and the same campy style. This is not particularly one of my favorite versions. I have a few issues with it but it tries. Props to Mr. Dan Curtis for being such a fan of this story. As some of you may know, he used it within Dark Shadows...not once but twice. And you may have already noticed that Megs Jenkins is back to reprise her role of Mrs. Grose. In my opinion, she was the only one who really understood her character (not suprising since she already knew the part). Another bit of trivia is that Michael Redgrave, Lynn's father had portrayed the Uncle in The Innocents.
The Turn of the Screw (1992) w/Patsy Kensit and Stephane Audran - I really like this version. Yes, the setting has changed from the late 19th century to the 60's (they never tell us an exact date) but I think it works for the most part. The acting is good and it is a fairly true adaptation to the novella. The music is atmospheric and fits well with the images on screen. If I had to choose a favorite "modernized" version of TOTS, then this would definitely be it. It also keeps the concept of the frame device...with the narrator telling the story of the governess. I really like how they go back and forth with that. I thought it was very effective and creative. As far as I know, this is the only film that has kept that element in tact.
The Turn of the Screw (1999) w/Jodhi May and Pam Ferris - This is part of the Masterpiece Theatre collection and is truly faithful (as most Masterpiece Theatre productions are) to the James' story. This particular version is fascinating because (like The Innoncents) it maintains that aspect of TOTS that makes it such a great story, it's ambiguity. Next to The Innocents, this is perhaps the strongest adaptation I have ever seen which makes me love it even more. A great deal of the novella's dialogue remains in tact which also makes me a fan. I present you with four adaptations of a famous scene within The Turn of the Screw. In this scene, the governess sees Peter Quint for a second time, but on a more dangerous level. This leads into her conversation with Mrs. Grose regarding the stranger but I will get to that actual scene another day.
The Innocents (1961) w/Deborah Kerr and Megs Jenkins - Most TOTS fans view this as the definitive version of TOTS. With a well-written script (based on the play of the same name by William Archibald, adapted from the James' novella) and well-rounded cast, it does not suprise me that this is a favorite among most people familar with the story. It's black and white cinematography makes it all the more spookier. I would consider it one of my favorite versions. My only real gripe (and most will probably agree with me) is I wasn't entirely convinced by Deborah Kerr as the governess. In the novella, she is 20 years old and Kerr was 40 when this movie was made. Now, that being said...this is still one of the strongest adaptations out there. One could even argue that they purposely made her older (or simply made her older because they wanted to go with Kerr in the role). Towards the end of the film, Miles calls her an old hag...
The Turn of the Screw (1974) w/Lynn Redgrave and Megs Jenkins - Yes, this is the televisioned version directed by Dan Curtis of Dark Shadows fame. Honestly, you can tell it was by the same director because he utilizes a lot of the same DS themes (composed by Robert Cobert) and the same campy style. This is not particularly one of my favorite versions. I have a few issues with it but it tries. Props to Mr. Dan Curtis for being such a fan of this story. As some of you may know, he used it within Dark Shadows...not once but twice. And you may have already noticed that Megs Jenkins is back to reprise her role of Mrs. Grose. In my opinion, she was the only one who really understood her character (not suprising since she already knew the part). Another bit of trivia is that Michael Redgrave, Lynn's father had portrayed the Uncle in The Innocents.
The Turn of the Screw (1992) w/Patsy Kensit and Stephane Audran - I really like this version. Yes, the setting has changed from the late 19th century to the 60's (they never tell us an exact date) but I think it works for the most part. The acting is good and it is a fairly true adaptation to the novella. The music is atmospheric and fits well with the images on screen. If I had to choose a favorite "modernized" version of TOTS, then this would definitely be it. It also keeps the concept of the frame device...with the narrator telling the story of the governess. I really like how they go back and forth with that. I thought it was very effective and creative. As far as I know, this is the only film that has kept that element in tact.
The Turn of the Screw (1999) w/Jodhi May and Pam Ferris - This is part of the Masterpiece Theatre collection and is truly faithful (as most Masterpiece Theatre productions are) to the James' story. This particular version is fascinating because (like The Innoncents) it maintains that aspect of TOTS that makes it such a great story, it's ambiguity. The post-war housing minister, Nye Bevan, dismissed them as "rabbit hutches" but, curiously, the prefab came to be one of the most popular forms of council housing because of its size, its garden and the privacy it afforded.
Directed by the prolific British director Lewis Gilbert ('Alfie', 'Educating Rita') early in his career, 'The Ten Year Plan' stars 'Carry On' actor Charles Hawtrey as a louche young writer sent to report on a range of prefabs, discovering with some surprise that many of them look like "real" houses.
