There is a bright side however: that the campaign, the principle advertisement is that of a baby, and I think it is fortunate that people see children and babies, and that the birth of new babies be promoted, particularly in Tuscany which is one of the regions in the world that has the lowest birth rate. So, hopefully there will be some positive outcome."

18. Various close-ups of campaign poster reading (Italian) "Sexual orientation is not a choice"
STORYLINE
'Sexual orientation is not a choice' is the slogan of a new campaign against sexual discrimination launched in Italy this week, supported by campaign materials showing a newborn baby wearing a wristband reading 'homosexual'.
Promoted by the region of Tuscany and supported by the Italian Town Councils Network, the campaign was launched at the Creativity Festival in Florence on Friday.
Speaking at the fair Alessio Di Giorgio, a member of Tuscany's council against sexual discrimination, sought to play down the furore.
"Our campaign, its message is a provocation. Nobody wants a world where babies are tagged as soon as they are born with their sexual preferences. It is clear that what we are trying to say is that the future of that kid should provide him with the same opportunities as anybody else," he said.
But the campaign is drawing fierce criticism from the Vatican and conservative politicians.
The campaign is also supported by some government authorities.

Italian/Eng/Nat
World Pride 2000 ended with a flourish on Saturday as tens of thousands marched to the Colosseum in what amounted to a victorious coming-out parade for Italy's gay community.
Gays from all over the world joined their Italian counterparts, jubilant as they tooted whistles and bore banners and signs proclaiming gay pride.
In flamboyant costumes with see-through fishnet outfits a favourite, the parade was a merry, jubilant affair.
Among the marchers was a soberly dressed provincial priest marching in solidarity with an event the Vatican tried to have cancelled.
Reverend Vitaliano Della Sala estimated that 200-thousand people were marching.
People came to Rome for the parade on Saturday on charter buses from Florence, Milan and Bologna or by train or car, joining the tens of thousands already in Rome for the week-long festival.
Many supporters came from other countries just to support the parade.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"First of all I was on vacation and second of all, we are here to stand up for our rights and make our voices known because it is for the world, the world needs to know we are all working for the same cause."
SUPER CAPTION: Gay pride participator
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I don't see so many drag queens and I am very sorry about that. I wish there were more transsexuals and drag queens, they are the cutting edge of our community, they are the leaders and I am happy to be here, it is a really important demonstration."
SUPER CAPTION: Gay pride participator
The parade marked the end of an international event opposed by the Vatican, the Italian right, conservative Catholics and neo-fascists.
The first such event in Italy, World Pride became a watershed for the gay community and one of the most highly politicized international gay pride events in recent memory.
It put gay issues on the political agenda of a country where "don't ask, don't tell" had long prevailed.
Marchers said that the parade was just one event and that the issue of gays should be accepted generally.
SOUNDBITE: (Italian)
"I hope there is not only a Saturday and Sunday for gays, but also a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and for the whole year and forever. Unfortunately people just look at this event only for the colours but that is not really what is important, it is important to change the sensibility towards gay people with intelligence and to grow all together."
SUPER CAPTION: Supporter
The week passed without the confrontations the Vatican said it feared between gays and religious pilgrims visiting Rome for the Holy Year.
Supporters from other European countries came to Rome in order to make a point of the Italian difficulties.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"To support the homosexuals here in Rome because I know it is still a problem so I want to be here to support it, in Holland it is much easier, in Rome it is difficult."
SUPER CAPTION: Supporter
The festival's international organizers chose Rome for World Pride 2000 in hopes of provoking a dialogue with the church.
But only a few dissident priests took part in the World Pride roundtables and conferences.

Italy is the only Western country that has take one of the most courageous steps other countries around the world dream of doing, but fear to act because of political correctness. Italy is the only Western country besides the Vatican that does not not recognize Islam as a religion in its territory. This is a step Italy has taken due to the fact that Islam is not compatible with its way of life, Muslim immigrants themselves are making it impossible for the Italian authorities to recognize the so called religion of peace as one of the religions of the country. Islam's view on polygamy, child marriages, honor killings, women's rights, gay rights, minority rights and other universal rights many of us take for granted makes it even more convincing for Italy passed legislation denying Islam's religious tax status. Italy has not failed Muslims; Muslims have failed Italy, just like they failed their other host countries.
Italy has banned Islam's religious tax status, why can't we?

An anti-gay Republican in Indiana uses a gay male hook-up site—and not for campaigning.

As legend has it, Rome, Italy, was founded by the twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, in 700 B.C. The former Caput Mundi, or Capital of the World, sits beneath Palatine Hill, where the ruins of its original incarnation are open for exploration.
No Rome tour is complete without stopping by the remains of the Temple of Saturn and Arch of Septimus, both located in the Roman Forum. Get in touch with your inner gladiator and stop by the Colosseum, a relic of Roman bloodsports and perhaps the most recognizable element of the city.
Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure you’ll return to Rome one day; don’t toss in two coins unless you’re ready to fall in love with a Roman. Continue your Rome sightseeing in St. Peter’s Square, home of St. Peter’s Basilica. The world’s largest church, designed by Michelangelo, is both a remarkable structure and a tribute to faith. You can look down from the famous dome to the Holy Square, which is usually filled with the faithful looking to obtain a blessing from the Pope. After this, it’s just a few steps to restaurants filled with Italian food. Forget coming back to Rome – you’ll never want to leave.

Travel video about destination Roma in Italy.
Roma Aeterna, eternal city and ancient centre of the world.
The Piazza Navona is situated in one of the Italian capital's most beautiful squares in a city that has always been a dream destination for travelers from all over the world. Three large fountains adorn the large oval square that was built above the ruins of a Domitian stadium that dates back to the 3rd century A.D.
The Romans had a special regard for fountains, the most famous of which is the Fontana Di Trevi. It was designed by Nicolo Salvi for the façade of the Palazzo Poli.
The Via Appia Antica was the most important street in ancient Rome. It connected the southern area with the main city and even today, one can walk over its ancient cobblestones.
Pope Gregory XIII had the Palazzo Del Quirinale built as his summer residence but it was not long after that the Italian monarchs acquired it as their Renaissance palace. Today it is the residence of Italy's President and the daily changing of the guards ceremony is still a popular attraction.
The 17th century St. Peter's Square is the most beautiful square in the world and is situated in the centre of the Vatican, an autonomous Church State in the heart of Rome that also contains the imposing and breathtaking Petersdom, the largest Christian church in the world.
The allure of this city lies in its combination of chaos and joie de vivre, elegance and creativity. Rome is a complete work of art!

Well, welcome to Italy! This week we're exploring the fashion capital of Europe. We're here in Milan. But of course there is more to do in Milan than just go shopping. So we're going to be showing you 20 attractions around town.
We had 3 days in Milan so we hit the ground running and tried to see and do as much as possible. We made time for major attractions like Il Duomo, Sforza Castle, and Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, but we also veered away from the crowds in search of street art and interesting neighborhoods. This being Italy, we also tried to prioritize meals, sampling everything from pizza to risotto, and cappuccinos to aperitivos. The following travel guide will highlight 20 things to do when you visit Milan, Italy
1) Milan Catherdral (Il Duomo - Duomo di Milano - Domm de Milan)
2) Il Duomo Terrace
3) Italian Breakfast - Cappuccino and sweet Italian pastries
4) Sforza Castle - Castello Sforzesco
5) The Galleria - Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
6) Risotto alla Milanese - Milan style risotto
7) Street Art around Porta Ticinese
8) Colonne di San Lorenzo - Columns of San Lorenzo Roman Ruins
9) Boat tour down the canal (linea traghetti gaggiano milano)
10) Dine along the canal in Milan's Navigli District
11) Aperitivo drinks and buffet - Apéritifs and digestifs
12) Shopping in Milan down Via Torino
13) Visiting Chinatown for some Chinese food
14) Ride a bicycle in Milan like a local
15) Pizza al taglio (pizza al trancio) Italian pizza by the slice
16) Basilica of Sant'Eustorgio containing relics of the 3 Magi
17) Duomo Museum covering the cathedrals history in-depth
18) New City Views with a hop-on-hop-off bus pass
19) Museum of Natural History - Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano
20) Night views of Milan nearby Il Duomo
Our trip to Milan, Lombardy was part of the Blogville project where we stayed in a local apartment and experienced all of the best cultural activities, museums, restaurants, arts and entertainment the city has to offer. This city guide is our best attempt to create a mix of best attractions and off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't necessarily find in a typical Milan tourism brochure.
20 Things to do in Milan, Italy Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Our first stop was Il Duomo, which is the most recognized attraction in the city. The cathedral took nearly six centuries to complete and the exterior is covered in Candoglia marble, which gives it its off-white pinkish colour.
Now we weren't entirely sure what an Italian breakfast looks like so we did a bit of research and asked around and apparently it is just a coffee and anything sweet. So that could be pastries, bread with jam, cake or cookies. So we've sat down at a little cafe and we're going to have our first Italian breakfast with cappuccino and sweet pastries.
Something that surprised us about Milan is that there is a castle right in the middle of the city. Sforza Castle was built in the 15th century by the Duke of Milan, and it then underwent several restorations and expansions in the following centuries. Today it houses several of the city's most prized art possessions, including frescoes by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo's very last sculpture.
For some upscale designer shopping, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is the place to be. It is considered one of the world's oldest and most beautiful shopping malls, and its most impressive feature is an arching glass and cast iron roof.
So we just found a local little restaurant and we're going to be trying a traditional dish that is very popular in this city and in the Lombardy region. We are going to have Risotto alla Milanese.
The Colonne di San Lorenzo are the remains of Roman ruins that date back to the 2nd century. They are believed to have been part of a bath house.
Another fun activity to try in Milan is a boat tour of the canals. The city's canals are attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci, who in 1482 was called over by the Duke of Milan to help renovate the city’s canal system.
Milan's Navigli District is one of the liveliest parts of town especially when the sun goes down for dining al fresco.
So we've gone out for our first Italian Aperitivo. Which is kind of like a pre-dinner drinking tradition. Basically, you get yourself a cocktail for about 10 Euros and that gives you access to this massive buffet.
And that's all for our visit to Milan. We hope this video will give you some cool ideas of sights and attractions to check out around town, and if you have any other suggestions for travellers, feel free to add those to the comments below.
This is part of our Travel in Italy series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Italian culture, Italian arts, Italian foods, Italian religion, Italian cuisine and Italian people.

wn.com/20 Things To Do In Milan, Italy Travel Guide

The gritty maze of the medieval city that makes up the core of Genoa is both beauty and the beast. The grandeur and heritage of this once great trading city lives side by side with modern vice and decrepitude. The odious smelling alleys give way to modern and chic restaurants and shops. Genoa is one of the most difficult of cities to describe and is very different from more generally travelled Italian cities like Rome, Florence or Venice.

Italy violates human rights by failing to offer enough legal protection for same-sex couples, a European court has ruled.
Judges said the government had breached the rights of three gay couples by refusing them marriage or any other recognised form of union.
Italy is the only major Western European country with no civil partnerships or gay marriage.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has long promised to pass a law on civil unions.
By failing to introduce new legislation, his government failed to "provide for the core needs relevant to a couple in a stable committed relationship," the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled on Tuesday.
The court said Italy was in breach of Article 8 - the right to respect for private and family life - of the European Convention on Human Rights.
A small number of municipalities in Italy allow local civil unions, but there is a national ban on same-sex marriage and the benefits of the existing provision are limited.
The court said the existing legal protection was "not sufficiently reliable".
It noted that 24 out of the 47 member states of the Council of Europe had passed laws in favour of legal recognition, and that the Italian constitutional court had repeatedly called for such protection and recognition.
The three couples in the case have been together for years, and all had their requests to be married rejected.
The ECHR ruled that the Italian government should pay the six men €5,000 (£3,500; $5,500) each in compensation, as well as expenses.
The prime minister has said his government would introduce laws on same-sex civil unions this year.
Hundreds of thousands of people marched in Rome in June against the proposed legislation.
But opinion polls show an increase in support for gay marriage.
It follows a pattern seen in Ireland - a strongly Catholic country like Italy - where voters overwhelmingly backed legalising same-sex marriages in May.
Afterwards, a senior Vatican official said Ireland's referendum result was a "defeat for humanity".

STORYLINE:
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Ruud Lubbers held a series of meetings in Rome on Thursday to discuss immigration and asylum rights in Italy.
During his visit he met with Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Interior Minister's delegate Alfredo Mantovano to discuss the Italian government's approach to immigration in view of a new immigration draft law being introduced, known as the "Bossi-Fini" law, that would make it harder for those seeking asylum to enter Italy. The Italian government has stated that the sole objective of the draft is to combat abuse of asylum procedures and illegal immigration.
Lubbers, speaking in a news conference, stressed that a zero immigration policy would result in strengthening illegal trafficking, pushing would-be immigrants into the clutches of people smugglers. He also said that immigrants are a resource for Europe. UNHCR believes that the draft bill currently being discussed in Italy's Chamber of Deputies needs some changes to align with legislation with at least some of the minimum standards internationally recognised.
Each year thousands of illegal immigrants land in Italy by boat with the latest mass arrival which place on Wednesday, the eleventh landing this year, when the rusty freighter "Island Glory" with approximately two hundred immigrants on board.

This summer, the United States Supreme Court will make a decision on whether to legalize same-sex marriage.
But some countries in Latin America have already done that, with Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay being three that have made gay marriage legal.
In this edition of Global Journalist, we look at gay rights in the region, and how some countries are actually going backwards in terms of gay rights.
This week's guests:
*Elisabeth Friedman, a professor of politics and the director of Latin American studies at the University of San Francisco. She’s also the author of “Unfinished Transitions: Women and the Gendered Development of Democracy in Venezuela.”
*Annecka Marshall, a lecturer in the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at the University of the West Indies
*Rosario Monteverde, director of GPS Gay, a social media website for L-G-B-T people with more than 200,000 users.

William Koenig "Eye to Eye": Facing the Consequences of Dividing Israel
http://watch.org/eyetoeye
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says a two-state solution is the 'best outcome' for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Prominent health writer, Anthony Gucciardi, recently tried to share a post about the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling, which just passed the Agriculture Committee and is heading to the House floor. The article was about how the bill would overturn any state's attempt to mandate labeling for GMOs and Monsanto's role in the controversy. Facebook blocked his post, and thousands of other users have experienced the same.
A new national bill in Congress might ban mandatory labeling for GMO products by states, but activists are already on the offensive, protesting and lobbying against the proposal.
Protesters pour into New York's Times Square to denounce the Iran nuclear deal as a threat to Israel and global security, demanding that Congress reject the agreement.
Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi gave a joint press conference with Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas on Wednesday during his visit to the West Bank, saying Italy was committed to "economic, cultural, and commercial efforts" for a two-state solution.
FBI Director James Comey says ISIS is more dangerous than al Qaeda and the terror group is a growing threat.
Two Russian bombers flew within about 40 miles of California's coast on July 4, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command.
While some hope the President Obama's trip to Kenya will bring closer ties between our two countries, there's one subject many Kenyans don't want him to talk about: gay rights and same-sex marriage.
Despite requests from African leaders to leave his views on homosexuality at home, President Barack Obama says he plans to make gay rights part of his agenda during his trip to Africa.

SYNOPSIS:
In the darker side of Manila-by-night,"tribes" of youthful gangsters roam the streets in search of quick fixes and precarious thrills.
World-weary Tondo throbs to the beat of of hiphop and freestyle gangsta rap, and to the scents and sensations of drugs and sex and violence.
We witness this crepuscular underworld through the eyes of ten year-old Ebet. We follow him as he witnesses the deadly lives of teen age gang members in Tondo and the events that lead to their explosive confrontation.
The Thugz Angels tribe members chance upon a blood-soaked body of a member of another gang. Police arrest a Thugz Angels member for the murder.
The murdered teen is a member of the Sacred Brown Tribe, whose leaders vow to avenge their fallen member. They learn that Diablos gang members killed the SBT neophyte. During the wake, SBT members forge a reluctant alliance with the Thugz Angels, and assemble to raid the Diablos' lair.
The Diablos are older, bigger, and confident of their fighting prowess. They know that they are being targeted for revenge and prepare accordingly.
Ebet lurks throughout the story, an enigma that is part innocent child and cynical adult. His loyalties are a mystery, and all that is clear to us is his love for his drug-addicted mother.
As the clock ticks towards midnight, guns are loaded, and knives are sharpened. The battle is about to begin!
And this is just part of the story.
Hailed as a gritty portrayal of Manila's notoriously violent streets of Tondo, Jim Libiran's Tribu is an ultrarealist depiction of youth corrupted by violence, death and decay, told documentary-style and punctuated by the poetically-charged street poetry of the cast.

Homophobia, bullying, civil rights, egalitarian marriage. How are the issues related to discrimination addressed in the media and what is the role played by social networks in 2015? How does the Italian and European media recount the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) reality in an era in which many European countries - but not Italy - have opened the doors to egalitarian marriage? How do Twitter and Facebook contribute to transforming this world? The panel will attempt to answer these questions, with the help of journalists and experts in the field who will come from several parts of Europe to express their own points of view and those of their countries. Organised in association with Omphalos.
