Fairy tales are stories that range from those originating in folk lore to more modern stories defined as literary fairy tales. A modern definition of the fairy tale, as provided by Jens Tismar's monologue in German, is a story that differs "from an oral folk tale"; written by "a single identifiable author"; can be characterised as "simple and anonymous"; and exists in a mutable and difficult to define genre with a close relationship to folktales.

The Ugly Duckling is an animated film by Walt Disney based on the fairy tale "The Ugly Duckling" by Hans Christian Andersen. Walt Disney actually produced two Silly Symphonies animated shorts based on the fairy tale, one in 1931 in black and white, and one in 1939 in Technicolor. The 1939 color film won the 1939 Academy Award for Best Short Subject (Cartoons). In this version, the baby swan's sufferings are shortened, as he is found by his family, after only a few minutes of rejection and ostracism, instead of a whole year. This abbreviated version is read by Lilo to Stitch in the 2002 Disney film Lilo & Stitch. The story has a deep impact on Stitch, who sets out to look for his real family. The Ugly Duckling was Disney's last Silly Symphony.

The Snow Maiden (subtitle: A Spring Fairy Tale) (Russian: Снегурочка–Весенняя сказка, Snegúrochka–Vesennyaya Skazka) is an opera in four acts with a prologue by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, composed during 1880–1881. The Russian libretto, by the composer, is based on the like-named play by Alexander Ostrovsky (which had premiered in 1873 with incidental music by Tchaikovsky). The first performance of Rimsky-Korsakov's opera took place at the Mariinsky Theatre, Saint Petersburg on 29 January 1882 (OS; 10 February NS) conducted by Eduard Nápravník. By 1898 it was revised in the edition known today. It remained the composer's own favorite work.

"Великий царь! Спроси меня сто раз!" "Great Tsar! Ask Me A Hundred Times!" The great Anna Netrebko sings Snegurochka's Death Scene, where the Snow Maiden, having finally known love, must now melt, to the heart-breaking despair of her lover Mizgir, who throws himself into the lake. The Tsar comforts the grieving townspeople by telling them that Snow Maiden's sacrifice has broken the 15-year-long winter in which their country has been locked.
The music to The Snow Maiden was written in March--April 1873, at the request of the management committee of the Moscow Imperial Theatres [1]. At the beginning of 1873, the Maly Theatre in Moscow was closed for structural repairs, with the result that all three companies—drama, opera and ballet—performed on the stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. The management committee of the Moscow Imperial Theatres—Pavel Kavelin, L. N. Auber and Vladimir Begichev (on the initiative of the latter)—decided to make the most of this opportunity to unite for a single fairy-tale production. The committee approached Aleksandr Ostrovsky with a request that he should write a suitable piece, the music for which, at the recommendation of the committee and the personal request of Ostrovsky, was to be written by Tchaiko...
The music to The Snow Maiden was written by Tchaikovsky in March - April 1873, at the request of the management committee of the Moscow Imperial Theatres. The first performance of The Snow Maiden took place on 11/23 May 1873 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, in a production by artists of the combined companies. Nikolay Kashkin recalled that the piece was not particularly successful, despite being excellently performed. Yet the music was well received by the public. Nikolay Rubinstein liked the music to The Snow Maiden, and after it was withdrawn from the repertoire (according to Nikolay Kashkin) he performed it to great acclaim at a concert on 28 March/9 April 1878. Conductor: Igor Golovschin Orchestra: Moscow Symphony Orchestra

The giant towers over all
But from close distance, he don't seem that big at all
In fact he's no more than you or I
Though we give him far more power than his size
Could such a land ever exist
Where those so many could be rendered oh, so weak?
And still be listening by the phone
To buy shares in things that we already own
The giant towers over all
But from close distance, she don't seem that big at all
In fact she's no more than you or I
Though we give her far more power than her size
Now as we lay me down to sleep
Hold firm the idea that the truth shall always keep
For history will prove in time
