Description:
The UN defines poverty as “a denial of choices and opportunities, a violation of human dignity. It means a lack of a basic capacity to participate effectively in society.” Poor citizens in rich countries certainly suffer under these terms but they also experience material deprivation. Unfortunately for the most part, bad government choices and corruption have put their citizens in this position.

Here's a preview:
At least 80% of humanity lives on less than $10 per day
To put things into perspective, the top 20% of the world's population accounts for three quarters of the world's income
Half of the world's population accounts for only 5% of the world's income
According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die every day due to poverty
Nearly one third of children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted
Last year, about 70 million children of primary school age were not in school
Nearly a billion people celebrated the coming of the 21st century without being able to read a book or sign their name
Preventable diseases like Malaria afflict nearly 500 million people every year
Africa alone accounts for roughly 1 million deaths due to Malaria annually. Most of them are children
Speaking of children, there are 2.2 billion children in the world.
Half of them live in extreme poverty
Over 1 billion people have inadequate access to water and 2.6 billion lack basic sanitation. Many times this means no separation of drinking water and toilet water.
That is why 1.8 million children die every year of diarrhoea
Approximately half of the world's population now lives in cities and about one third of those in the cities live in slum conditions
In fact, slum growth is outpacing urban growth by a frighteningly large margin
One quarter of humanity lives without electricity
The 7 richest people in the world make more than the poorest 41 countries combined (roughly 567 million people)
.14% of the world population own over 80% of the world's private financial wealth. The vast majority of that wealth has managed to avoid all income and estate taxes, either by the countries where it has been invested or where it comes from.
For every $1 in aid that a developing country receives, over $25 is spent on debt repayment.
The poorer the country, the more likely it is that the debt repayments are being extracted directly from the people who neither contracted the loans nor received any money
In 1998 $8 billion dollars was spent on cosmetics in the United States, $11 billion was spent on ice cream in the European Union, $17 billion was spent on pet food in Europe and the US, $100 billion was spent on alcohol in Europe, $400 billion was spent on narcotics globally, and $780 billion was spent on militaries around the world.
In the same year $6 billion was spent on achieving basic education for all, $9 billion was spent on basic water and sanitation for all, and $13 billion was spent on basic health and nutrition for all
If you are reading this list then you are in the top 30% of the world's population when it comes to poverty and wealth
With new technologies we now grow enough food to feed 10 billion people or 1.5 times the world population. The problem is that most of the world can't afford to buy that food.
If the world spent less than 1% of what it spends on weapons all the previously mentioned issues would be fixed

Melanie and I were on a long adventure through the Manila area of the Philippines. During this trip we took various modes of transportation ranging from a bus (van) to a bicycle to a tricycle (moped). I used the time to record all the various scenes we passed along the way.
Manila is a city of extremes. It is beautiful and has a certain magnetic draw to it. I fell in love with the city during my stay. But there are both extreme riches and severe poverty - often side by side.
Along the water ways you see some shacks and huts that are tiny little homes for entire families who make their living off the water.
Driving along the outskirts of the city you see areas that look just like Queens, NY with all the businesses along the road ways.
There are also apartment complexes which you can find in any large city.
And there are extremely rich areas in the city center.
Often you find poor families living in huts or shacks thrown together with any materials they can find, scattered along the roads. The children beg for money or sell small objects to provide for the family.
I fell in love with the people during my stay and often emptied my pockets of loose coins to give to the children living on the streets. You cannot help but to feel for these people.
Almost everywhere I went, I was stared at openly and many people waved and said "hello sir". Most of the people love Americans it seems and show a lot of respect.
Although it is quite a poor country with armed military, police and security guards all over the place, I felt no sense of danger or fear anywhere I went. As long as you dont flaunt your camera or cell phone, you should be safe on the streets of Manila. Granted I did not go out after dark very much outside the streets by my hotel. I was known there and felt very welcome.
I also made sure to buy my groceries and supplies from the nearby vendors and shops to support the local people.
I feel drawn to this city and I will most likely go back one day. I cannot really explain why I love the place but for one thing the people are kind and simple. They accept you easily and make you feel at home in Manila.
Follow my daily progress on the path to self sufficiency on my off grid solar homestead.

How much profit is fair? To find out more and get teaching resources, go to www.whypoverty.net
Rüschlikon is a village in Switzerland with a very low tax rate and very wealthy residents. But it receives more tax revenue than it can use. This is largely thanks to one resident - Ivan Glasenberg, CEO of Glencore, whose copper mines in Zambia are not generating a large bounty tax revenue for the Zambians. Zambia has the 3rd largest copper reserves in the world, but 60% of the population live on less than $1 a day and 80% are unemployed. Based on original research into public documents, the film describes the tax system employed by multinational companies in Africa.

In Wealth, Poverty, and Politics, Thomas Sowell, one of the foremost conservative public intellectuals in this country, argues that political and ideological struggles have led to dangerous confusion about income inequality in America. Pundits and politically motivated economists trumpet ambiguous statistics and sensational theories while ignoring the true determinant of income inequality: the production of wealth. We cannot properly understand inequality if we focus exclusively on the distribution of wealth and ignore wealth production factors such as geography, demography, and culture. Sowell contends that liberals have a particular interest in misreading the data and chastises them for using income inequality as an argument for the welfare state. Refuting Thomas Piketty, Paul Krugman, and others on the left, Sowell draws on accurate empirical data to show that the inequality is not nearly as extreme or sensational as we have been led to believe. Transcending partisanship through a careful examination of data, Wealth, Poverty, and Politics reveals the truth about the most explosive political issue of our time.

Laos has mobilised all of its untapped potential and stepped up cooperation with all stakeholders, backed by support from friendly countries for the country's development programme.
Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong delivered this message during his opening remarks at the 9th Asean Ministerial Meeting on Rural Development and Poverty Eradication, which took place in Vientiane on Saturday.
He also said Laos was beginning to implement the eighth Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan, preparing for entry into the Asean Community, implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), and striving to graduate from least developed country status by 2020.
Mr Thongsing said that although Laos was moving forward to upper middle income status in line with green and sustainable development, poverty eradication remained the top priority.
He also reminded the audience about the government's urging for a nation-loving spirit of development through the Party's Three Builds (Sam Sang) directive. In this connection the government had focused on infrastructure development, access to public health services in rural areas, food security, commercial production, services, education, and sanitary expansion.
They had also addressed the issue of dispersed resettlement by providing people with permanent dwelling places and transforming the way of life of ethnic groups.
The prime minister noted that the poverty rate had now dropped below the 23 percent figure recorded in 2013, and that more than 122,000 households and 1,430 villages had been freed from poverty in the past five years. The Asean meeting on Saturday coincided with the International Day and National Week for Poverty Eradication.
Prime Minister Thongsing said the annually organised event demonstrated the strong commitment of Asean to the overall efforts of other nations in promoting awareness of the significance of poverty eradication. The fight against poverty has been the main focus of the MDGs, and continues to remain a priority of the SDGs for 2016-2030.
Laos is one of the fourth newer members of Asean, and lags behind the six original member states in terms of development.
Prime Minister Thongsing said he believed the Asean meeting would serve as a significant platform for promoting mutual understanding and sharing experiences and best practices aimed at strengthening cooperation in the area of poverty reduction, to ensure that the people of the region lived in better conditions and could enjoy prosperity.

The World Bank Group in 2013 made the elimination of extreme poverty by 2030 a central focus. This video supplements our evaluation which examines how, and how well, the Bank Group has focused its support on poverty reduction over the past decade, and what lessons to draw from this moving forward. The lessons aim to strengthen the Bank’s country diagnostics, improve the design of country strategies, and build greater learning opportunities from program experience.

Arabic/Eng
The Iraqi leadership decided on Friday to refer a U-N Security Council resolution on disarmament inspections to the country's parliament.
In a statement issued after a meeting of the country's highest forum, chaired by President Saddam Hussein, the leadership called Thursday's Council resolution "unjust".
The response came as a United Nations report suggested that continued sanctions continued to leave many Iraqis malnourished.
A day out in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad.
This is the first circus to come to town since the Gulf war.
These Russian performers are giving Iraqi children their first real-life taste of something they've only previously watched on television.
But not all Iraqis can enjoy the fun of the fair - many face poverty and a daily struggle to feed their families.
The United Nations is concerned at the numbers on the bread-line.
The spokesman for the U-N humanitarian operation in Iraq described the findings of a report by the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organisation.
It found that many Iraqis are getting insufficient nutrients - despite U-N aid.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"This report from the FAO and WFP underlines that even though there has been some improvement in the overall food supply situation as a result of the introduction of the food basket, malnutrition remains a serious problem through the country. "
SUPER CAPTION: Eric Falt, spokesman for the U-N humanitarian coordinator in Iraq
Many of the problems facing Iraq stem from the wide-ranging economic sanctions imposed on the country since the Gulf War in 1991.
Under the U-N resolutions, Iraq has to prove that it has destroyed all its weapons of mass destruction before the security council will lift the sanctions.
But on Thursday a new resolution proposed by the U-S and Britain - reported here on Iraqi television - threatened to ban foreign travel by certain Iraqi officials unless they co- operated with U-N weapons inspectors.
The resolution was discussed at a joint meeting of Iraq's two highest bodies on Friday - the Revolutionary Command Council and the Regional Command of Baath Arab Socialist Party.
It was chaired by President Saddam Hussein.
Iraq praised the actions of China, France, Egypt, Kenya and Russia in abstaining from the vote - resisting it described as "the clear lies of the liars".
But Iraq's leaders are to consider further the resolution's demands that they co-operate with the U-N weapons inspectors.
UPSOUND: (Arabic)
"It has been decided the issue should be discussed in a meeting of the Iraq National Council meeting and any steps or suggestions would be announced then"
SUPER CAPTION: Iraqi News Announcer
The decision to refer the resolution to parliament, which does not have a reputation for acting independently, appeared to give the leadership time to consider its response.

VO Under Party leadership, Laos hopes of achieving fundamental poverty reduction and graduating from Least Developed Country status
INTRO: Laos is actively implementing its poverty reduction strategy in the hope of achieving fundamental poverty reduction and graduating from Least Developed Country status. This special report is one of a series telecasted in Lao National Television English Language News Bulletin to mark the 60th anniversary of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party on March 22.
STORY: Over the past 60 years the living standards of Laos' multi-ethnic population have steadily improved and poverty eradication has been a priority issue for the Party, state and people jointly.
The Lao National Committee for Rural Development and Poverty Eradication reported recently that the poverty rate nationwide has fallen year by year and the number of individual households officially classified as poor has steadily declined. There are now 30 districts classified as poor out of the total 148, compared to 47 in 2010.
As Laos moves closer to eradicating poverty by 2020, implementation of the Party's Three Builds (Sam Sang) directive has become instrumental in driving rural development and improving villagers' living standards.
The directive was laid down in the Resolution of the 9th Party Congress. It spells out how provinces are to be built up as strategic units, districts as comprehensively strengthened units, and villages as development units.
In recent years the government has spent 248 billion kip on 943 projects to boost infrastructure development and promote agricultural production among people in 109 villages of the 51 districts under Sam Sang initiatives. Since the Three Builds directive came into force, all of the target villages have developed year by year and villagers' circumstances have improved noticeably.
The Resolution sets an ambitious goal to reduce the number of poor families to less than 10 percent of the total population by 2015 and advance the country further towards graduating from Least Developed Country status by 2020.
To help Laos achieve this goal, the Poverty Reduction Fund was set up in 2002, initially financed by the World Bank. The Fund has carried out community-based activities in Phongsaly, Oudomxay, Xieng Khuang, Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha, Huaphan, Savannakhet, Xekong, Saravan and Attapeu provinces, covering 42 districts.
The objective of the Fund is to help villagers to develop community infrastructure and gain improved access to services, build capacity and empower villagers in poor districts to plan, manage and implement their own public investments in a decentralised and transparent manner, and strengthen local institutions to support participatory decision-making and conflict resolution processes at the village and district level. This involves a broad range of villagers, including women, the poor, and ethnic groups.
From 1975 until the present, the Party's development efforts have focused on many areas, including the economy, socio-cultural growth, infrastructure, poverty reduction, health, education, tourism, information, investment and law-making. All of these areas have seen improvement in parallel with the country's overall development.

Take a look at the continent's poorest country, Moldova. The impoverished inhabitants are being forced into prostitution and selling their organs just to survive. Billboards in the capital Chisinau warn women about being sold as prostitutes. UNICEF has set up a call centre for women. We hear one such harrowing tale: "A man told me that I had been sold to him, and he told me what I would have to do. I started to cry, and said I wanted to go home. But he had already sold me to two other men." Times are hard. Moldova now pays 40% of its GDP in debts and interest; next year it will be 70%. Yet life goes on; we see an orthodox wedding and visit a beauty parlour to catch some better times. The country has been split since the ethnic civil war in 92'. The break-away region to the east of the river is TransDniestr where, worryingly, 45,000 tons of Soviet military equipment is stored. But the economic situation is the biggest worry; disillusioned with Western ways, the communists were voted back into power in the spring, with an absolute majority. An engaging and eye-opening look at a neglected region.

Children of the fourth World - Documentary
60 Minute Documentary - First Aired Nationally on PBS in 1999. Emmy Winner.
In the early 1990's while filming a Presidential Election in Guatelmala City, Film maker John Biffar met an American woman, Kari Engen. She had traveled to Guatemala City several years earlier on a mission to help poor, and hungry children. When she arrived in Guatemala city she learned of the plight of the children, many lost and abandoned. Living on the streets - After all, this was "The Third World." But then she learned of the children living in the dump. An entire subculture of people in a trash pile. This was "The Fourth World." Her life's mission has become helping these children to escape the deadly grasp and cycle of life in the dump. Her program, Mi Refugio is the result. John has documented her struggles, triumphs and tragedies for two decades. This documentary was produced in the late 1990's by Bush Entertainment and Trilogy Media, John's production company. Hosted by and Narrated by Film Actress Ali MacGraw. We are known as Dreamtime Entertainment today. I edited and filmed much of this program and it's a touching and an emotional rollercoaster as it was when I edited way back then on our Media 100 editing system. It still gives me the shivers. I hope you enjoy this program and it inspires you to change the world too. Like Kari is still doing. Go to www.mirefugio.org to help her.
Mi Refugio is a nonprofit corporation with tax exempt status (#52-1610744) in the USA. Contributions should be made out to Mi Refugio and mailed to 4908 Jasmine Drive, Rockville, Maryland 20853. www.mirefugio.org
Dave Says, "This program is not another video about a religious mission to convert people, it's not about a religious anything. It's about one person following her heart. Dedicating her life and all she believes to helping these children, and their families have a better life. For those of us in the US, this documentary gives us evidence that the SMALLEST thing, the most insignificant thing in our lives here in this country could be HUGE for a child living in a Central American dump. But amidst all that dirt and despair, a light can shine through it all...powered by belief that it can be changed. And the most humble person with no means at all, can make that change a reality. According to Kari, that happens when we look into our hearts and ask god. (or whatever deity it is that you believe in, or if you don't believe in any, then ask...just ask and see if you get an answer back)

«Township Lessons from the Cape of Good Hope» (2014) tells the story of people living in the Cape Flats area outside of Cape Town, South Africa 20 years after Apartheid.
How do township residents in slums cope with crime, unemployment and poverty in a country still very much struggling with racism, underdevelopment and inequality?
If you want to support the portrayed NGO and their projects in Lavender Hill, they are happy to receive your donations: http://www.philisaabafazi.org

The Scavengers: Looking at a simple toilet innovation with profound implications for India's Untouchables
April 2008
A revolutionary toilet is making waves the world over. Self-composting, and requiring no drainage, the toilet already serves some 4 million people daily in India. What's more, it is empowering the country's poorest.
Dr. Bindeswhar Phatak is the acclaimed head of the Sulabh Movement. His organisation has provided public toilet facilities throughout India, and stable jobs for 50,000 Untouchables. The large profits made by the scheme go towards further educating and training the Untouchable class. Now governments worldwide are queuing up to order the design which "reduces disease, improves health and eliminates poverty."
