This was Lev Kuleshov's directorial debut. This work is extremely important not only for Russian cinema; it became a landmark in the history of the world's cinematograph. For the first time a specific method of montage had been used in this film, which came to be known later as "Soviet montage". Despite the fact that Kuleshov's films had preceded many discoveries of Vertov and Eisenstein, his works are little known outside Russia. Among his students were Vsevolod Pudovkin and Boris Barnet. In the introduction to Kuleshov's book The Art of Cinema (1928), his former students wrote: "It was on his shoulders that we crossed into the open sea. We make films -- Kuleshov made cinematography..."
Cast: Boris Kuleshov, Yelena Komarova, Ernest Kul'ganek, Lev Kuleshov
Lev Vladimirovich Kuleshov (1899 -- 1970) was a Soviet filmmaker and film theorist who taught at and helped establish the world's first film school (the Moscow Film School).
Kuleshov may well be the very first film theorist as he was a leader in Soviet montage theory — developing his theories of editing before those of Sergei Eisenstein (briefly a student of Kuleshov) and Vsevolod Pudovkin. For Kuleshov, the essence of the cinema was editing, the juxtaposition of one shot with another. To illustrate this principle, he created what has come to be known as the Kuleshov Experiment. In this now-famous editing exercise, shots of an actor were intercut with various meaningful images (a casket, a bowl of soup, and so on) in order to show how editing changes viewers' interpretations of images.
In addition to his theoretical work, Kuleshov was an active director of feature-length films till 1943. Since 1943 Kuleshov was serving as the academic rector of Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography.

Brute Force [aka Primitive Man] (1914) is a short silent drama film directed by D. W. Griffith, in Los Angeles, California. It is a story of cavemen and dinosaurs, and perhaps the first live-action dinosaur film. A segment of my theory is a possibility that the perspective D.W. Griffith's film provided may have triggered a discovery among select few. This discovery, whether already known or newly

"Необычайные приключения мистера Веста в стране большевиков" (Лев Кулешов).
Mr. West was the first feature film that Kuleshov made with a team of actors who had attended his Experimental Cine-Laboratory. For four years, this group had been doing preparatory work as they planned to reform the art of cinema with an eye on montage. The film chronicles the adventures of an American, "Mr. West," and h

Film o matce a jejích dcerách, rozteklých snech a o útěku do Indie.

“For Luck” (Rus. За счастьем, Za Schastem) is the last film made by the great Russian director Yevgeny Bauer, produced in 1917 by Khanzhonkov Studios. Although Yevgeni Bauer's fascinating and promising career ended all too prematurely, at least this movie is worthy to have been his last one. Starting with a relatively simple situation, it develops some interesting themes that later prove to be of great importance, and it builds up the emotional tension to the point that it becomes almost too much to bear.
The beginning introduces the three main characters: a wealthy widow, her ailing daughter who is in danger of going blind, and the widow's patient suitor. At the outset, the simple question concerns how much longer the suitor will be willing to wait to get married, since the widow won't do so until her daughter is out of danger.
All of the characters are believable, and all of them are worth caring about, making the dramatic tension in their relationships that much greater. Another interesting aspect of the movie is Lev Kuleshov's involvement, both on the production crew and in a small but important role on-screen. Unlike Bauer, Kuleshov still had almost his whole career ahead of him.
Since Zoya Verenskaya's husband passed away ten years ago, she has been devoted to her daughter Lee. At present, Lee is in poor health, and she is in danger of losing her eyesight. Zoya's suitor Dmitry wants to get married, but Zoya is determined to wait until Lee is better. Then, on a vacation in the Crimea, they learn Lee's true feelings for Dmitry, and suddenly all of their lives are thrown into turmoil.
This film, "For Luck", by the great director Yevgeni Bauer, involves a love circle, but it's all about sight. Lee, the daughter, has difficulties. The eyes of the actors advance much of the continuity editing, directing where shots will cut to next. The eyes are also what the actors use most of all for emoting--for expression. Bauer uses fadeouts extensively, as he does in other films, which is associative to Lee's fading sight.
Bauer was a visual director, so it seems appropriate that he'd make a film about seeing. This was the last film of one of the first masters of the young visual medium, and it's an early picture for one of its next revolutionaries. Lev Kuleshov, who would change cinema forever with his montage experiments, was the production designer for this film and has an acting role as a painter. "For Luck" opens on a lavish set, and you can see the typically high standard of set design and mise-en-scène of Bauer's oeuvre here.
Yevgeni Franzevich Bauer (Russian: Евгений Францевич Бауэр) (1865 – 22 June [O.S. 9 June] 1917) was a Russian film director of silent films, a theatre artist and a screenwriter. His work had a great influence on the aesthetics of Russian cinematography at the beginning of the 20th century.
Bauer made more than seventy films between 1913 and 1917 of which 26 survived. He already used relatively long sequence shots and displacements of camera virtuosos. Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan called Bauer "The greatest director you've never heard of."

This discovery, whether already known or newly known, may have triggered many subsequent events, such as the Second World War.
D.W. Griffith Observation. Motion picture legend Charlie Chaplin called Griffith "The Teacher of us All". This sentiment was widely shared. Filmmakers as diverse as John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Orson Welles, Lev Kuleshov, Jean Renoir, Cecil B. DeMille, King Vidor, Victor Fleming, Raoul Walsh, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Sergei Eisenstein and Stanley Kubrick have spoken of their respect for the director of Intolerance. Orson Welles said "I have never really hated Hollywood except for its treatment of D. W. Griffith. No town, no industry, no profession, no art form owes so much to a single man."
World War II (WWII or WW2), also known as the Second World War, was a global war that lasted from 1939 to 1945, though related conflicts began earlier. It involved the vast majority of the world's nations—including all of the great powers—eventually forming two opposing military alliances: the Allies and the Axis.
It was the most widespread war in history, and directly involved more than 100 million people from over 30 countries. In a state of "total war", the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources.
Marked by mass deaths of civilians, including the Holocaust (in which approximately 11 million people were killed) and the strategic bombing of industrial and population centers (in which approximately one million were killed, and which included the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki), it resulted in an estimated 50 million to 85 million fatalities. These made World War II the deadliest conflict in human history.
Griffith was discovered unconscious in the lobby at the Knickerbocker Hotel in Los Angeles, where he had been living alone. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage on July 23, 1948, at 3:42 PM on the way to a Hollywood hospital.

Rosenberg, N. Sisova, Y. Lenz, A. Glinsky Original Language Title Potselui Meri Pikford Production Mezhrapom-Rus Scenario Sergei Komarov and Vadim Shershenevich Cinematographer Y. Alexeiev Art Direction S. Kozlovsky and D. Kolupaev
When Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks visited Moscow on a vacation trip in 1926, they were the most famous couple in the world. Among the first Hollywood celebrities, they were idolized everywhere, even in the Soviet Union, where audiences preferred American and German films to groundbreaking homemade fare like Battleship Potemkin, Mother, and Man with a Movie Camera. The couple’s visit to a Russian film studio provided Sergei Komarov, a member of the avant-garde movement, the chance to pay homage to American style comedies so beloved by Soviet audiences.
A Kiss from Mary Pickford was the first of only two pictures Komarov directed. A student of Lev Kuleshov, the father of Soviet montage, Komarov was a popular actor, appearing in 31 features, starting with the agit-prop Serp i molot (Sickle and Hammer, 1921) and ending with the science-fiction spy thriller Tayna dyukh okeanov (The Secret of the Two Oceans, 1955). In A Kiss from Mary Pickford, Komarov spoofs the unprecedented fame reached by American stars like Pickford and Fairbanks, the fickle nature of fandom, and the state of the Soviet film industry.
An uncredited starlet at Biograph studios, Pickford helped to create the modern star system, as audiences clamored to learn about “the girl with the curls.” A comedian and swashbuckler, Fairbanks was the reigning male sex symbol of the late ’teens and ’20s. Both were married to others when their relationship began in 1916. The hint of scandal surrounding them did nothing to diminish their popularity, and may even have enhanced it after they were finally free to marry each other in 1920. “America’s Sweetheart” and “Everybody’s Hero” were met in their travels by receptions usually reserved for royals. During their London honeymoon, the pair was mobbed by thousands of fans who pulled Pickford from a car. Both stars suffered bruises and scrapes as they fought to escape the frenzied crowd. Similar frenzy met them wherever they traveled, including the visit to Moscow where they stopped at the Mezhrapom-Rus film studios. While newsreel cameras rolled, Pickford embraced Russian actor Igor Ilyinsky in a typical photo-op. Komarov built an entire feature around this single shot, employing the montage techniques he had learned from Kuleshov.
By the time Komarov made A Kiss From Mary Pickford, the Soviet film industry had reached its apex. An economic crisis that started before the turn of the century—and which sparked the Communist revolution of 1917—made the production of movies extremely difficult. Revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin saw motion pictures as a way of extending Marxism to the nation’s mostly illiterate population and invested in its growth. Lenin’s New Economic Policy (NEP) of 1921 relaxed state control of some industries, creating a mini-capitalist structure within the Communist economy. Privately-run movie theaters blossomed. Urban audiences, flush with cash after years of hardship, sought entertainment and found it in movies imported from the West. American and German films were the most popular, with the adventures of Harry Piel, considered the German Douglas Fairbanks, especially favored.
Kuleshov formed a cinema workshop in 1920. An admirer of the films of D.W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin, Kuleshov wrote, “We must seek the organization of cinematography not in the limitations of the exposed shot, but in the alternation of these shots.” The editing approach Kuleshov described as “American montage” was later called “Soviet montage” by critics and historians. Noticing that audiences preferred foreign movies to Soviet product, Kuleshov, in 1922, defined this phenomenon as “Americanitis.” “Deep-thinking officials get … frightened by ‘Americanitis’ ... in the cinema and explain the success of the particular films by the extraordinary decadence and poor ‘tastes’ of the youth and the public of the third balcony.”

West," and his faithful bodyguard and servant Jeddie, as they visit the land of the horrible, evil Bolsheviks. Through various mishaps, Mr. West discovers that the Soviets are actually quite remarkable people, and, by the end of the film, his opinion of them has changed to one of glowing admiration!
