The Partitions of Poland were a series of three partitions of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth that took place towards the end of the 18th century and ended the existence of the state, resulting in the elimination of the sovereign Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and Lithuania for 123 years. The partitions were conducted by the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia and Habsburg Austria, which divided up the Commonwealth lands among themselves progressively in the process of territorial seizures.
The First Partition of Poland was decided on August 5, 1772. Two decades later, Russian and Prussian troops entered the Commonwealth again and the Second Partition was signed on January 23, 1793. Austria did not participate in the Second Partition. The Third Partition of Poland took place on October 24, 1795, in reaction to the unsuccessful Polish Kościuszko Uprising the previous year. With this partition, the Commonwealth ceased to exist.
In English, the term "Partitions of Poland" is sometimes used geographically as toponymy, to mean the three parts that the partitioning powers divided the Commonwealth into, the Austrian Partition, the Prussian Partition and the Russian Partition. In Polish, there are two separate words for the two meanings. The consecutive acts of dividing and annexation of Poland are referred to as rozbiór (plural: rozbiory), while the term zabór (pl. zabory) means each part of the Commonwealth annexed in 1772–1795 becoming part of either Imperial Russia, Prussia or Austria.

Poland (Polish: Polska [ˈpɔlska]), officially the Republic of Poland (Polish: Rzeczpospolita Polska, listen ), is a country in Central Europe, bordered by Germany to the west; the Czech Republic and Slovakia to the south; Ukraine and Belarus to the east; and the Baltic Sea, Kaliningrad Oblast (a Russian exclave) and Lithuania to the north. The total area of Poland is 312,679 square kilometres (120,726 sq mi), making it the 71st largest country in the world and the 9th largest in Europe. With a population of over 38.5 million people, Poland is the 34th most populous country in the world, the 8th most populous country in Europe and the sixth most populous member of the European Union, as well as the most populous post-communist member of the European Union. Poland is a unitary state divided into 16 administrative subdivisions.
The establishment of a Polish state can be traced back to 966, when Mieszko I, ruler of a territory roughly coextensive with that of present-day Poland, converted to Christianity. The Kingdom of Poland was founded in 1025, and in 1569 it cemented a longstanding political association with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania by signing the Union of Lublin. This union formed the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, one of the largest and most populous countries of 16th and 17th-century Europe. The Commonwealth ceased to exist in the years 1772–1795, when its territory was partitioned among Prussia, the Russian Empire, and Austria. Poland regained its independence (as the Second Polish Republic) at the end of World War I, in 1918.
http://www.tomrichey.net/euro Mr. Richey explains the 18th century Partitions of Poland as he drives home from work. In the late 18th century, Frederick the Great of Prussia, Catherine the Great of Russia, and Joseph II of Austria reached three agreements to divide parts of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth between their three nations. Frederick, Catherine, and Joseph were all known as "enlightened absolutists," though their use of military force to subjugate Poland is not in accordance with the principles of the Enlightenment. The Partitions of Poland serve as a lesson to any nation that allows decentralized government to compromise military readiness. It does no good to be a weak nation surrounded by strong neighbors. "It's all fun and games until you get taken over by three diffe...
In 1730 the neighbours of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, namely Prussia, Austria and Russia, signed a secret agreement in order to maintain the status quo: specifically, to ensure that the Commonwealth laws would not change. Their alliance later became known in Poland as the "Alliance of the Three Black Eagles" The movie created by Artur Uroda.
In the late 18th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was partitioned between the three countries of Austria, Russia, and Prussia. Poland and Lithuania would not be independent again until after World War One.

From small beginnings as a periphery on the edge of Christendom in the 11th Century, Poland rose to become a major component of European politics by the High Middle Ages. Lithuania took much the same path and was by by the largest centralised state in Europe during the Late Middle Ages and early renaissance. The final unification of the two powers in 1569 brought their nations to new heights, and allowed them to take on powers such as Russia, Sweden and the Ottomans. Although initially successful, these wars eventually became the Commonwealth's downfall, as it lost large swaths of territory in the north and east to Sweden and Russia, respectively. The Commonwealth came to an end in 1795 after three separate partitions. Both Poland and Lithuania endured the 19th Century without any real sta...

The 1793 Second Partition of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was the second of three partitions that ended the existence of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth by 1795.The second partition occurred in the aftermath of the War in Defense of the Constitution and the Targowica Confederation of 1792, and was approved by its territorial beneficiaries, the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia. The division was ratified by the coerced Polish parliament in 1793 in a short-lived attempt to prevent the inevitable complete annexation of Poland, the Third Partition. ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- About the author(s): Archiwum Główne Akt Dawnych License: Public domain ---Image-Copyright-and-Permission--- This channel is dedicated to make Wikipedia, one of the biggest knowledge databases i...

People often ask me how could I chose to live in Poland instead of the US. What was the reason to move out from the ’american dream” and settle down in the East European country? On today’s episode of Kult America I will try to explain why I made that choice. It was not just my admiration for the culture, but involved some social, economic, and - nevertheless - personal reasons.
