PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA DMITRY MEDVEDEV: Ladies and gentlemen, dear friends,
Let me begin by congratulating everyone on our national holiday, the Day of National Unity. This holiday is still new it is the youngest of all our national holidays. It was established only recently, five years ago, to mark our respect for our heroic history and honour the memory of the destiny-making feat that our people accomplished.
Nearly four centuries have passed since that day when people of different social backgrounds, ethnic groups and religions rallied around Kuzma Minins and Dmitry Pozharskys call for unity. They organised a volunteer force and liberated Moscow from foreign invaders. Our peoples unity saved our country at that point in time, saved it from internal strife and external interference and danger, ended the tribulations of the Time of Troubles and ultimately prevented the country from falling apart, thus setting Russia on its historic destiny as a strong and influential state.
I have just returned from Suzdal, where I took part in opening a memorial chapel at the grave of Dmitry Pozharsky. This is a unique place and a unique memorial. It was built in 1885 and took almost twenty years to complete. In the 1930s, like many of our monuments, it was destroyed. Now we have rebuilt it. It took two years to rebuild. I think this is an excellent symbol on the Day of National Unity. Furthermore, it was restored not with state subsidies, but with money donated by the public. It was built on public donations in the nineteenth century, and now has been restored using public donations in the twenty-first century. It unquestionably reminds us of the feat of our outstanding citizen, Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, and of the courage shown by all the heroes who formed the volunteer force.
Back in that distant year 1612, the Russian people united around their love for their homeland, their desire for freedom, and, of course, their sense of responsibility for their countrys destiny. Over the centuries these values have helped our people overcome the severest trials, achieve success and emerge victorious.
Dear friends,
In keeping with the traditions that have already formed over these last few years, present here today are representatives of Russian non-governmental organisations, ethnic-cultural and religious groups. You are all people whose influence and active stand as citizens are helping to strengthen our civil society, social stability and interethnic harmony.
I also welcome our foreign guests, true enthusiasts, who make efforts at the highest level to support interest in our history and culture, promote the study of Russian, and preserve the integrity and diversity of the unique phenomenon that we call the Russian world, which unites our compatriots abroad and all friends of Russia in every corner of our planet.
By tradition, on the Day of National Unity we honour and thank you and of course award state decorations.
Once again, I congratulate you sincerely on this holiday and ask that we now begin the state decorations award ceremony.
PERMANENT SECRETARY OF THE ACADEMIE FRANCAISE HELENE CARRERE DENCAUSSE: I would like to thank you for this award from the bottom of my heart; it is a great honour for me. It is a particularly significant honour for me because, as you know, my ancestors come from this nation. Many of their names are written on the walls of this St George Hall, and I have devoted my entire professional life to becoming closer to Russia. I am a Frenchwoman, but a Frenchwoman with a Russian heart. I love this nation, and I can say that the only thing thats important to me is to try to explain Russia to the French. I have educated a generation of students and many readers, and I am certain that as the French truly love Russia, as our countries have very close relations which are unique because they are not some standard relations between two nations; instead, they resemble sincere relations between family members, whats therefore most important for me is to further improve our relations. Soon, the Year of France will be held in Russia, and the Year of Russia will be held in France. I will try to work as hard as I can for these projects, and I am grateful to you, Mr President, for this sign of appreciation.

The famous song "Cuckoo" by 90's band Kino (in the video, sung by Polina Gagarina) can be interpreted in many ways, but I've always thought it referred to the 14th century battle of Kulikovo - which many consider an event that forged the modern Russian nation, both politically and spiritually.

When Chengis Khan organized the nomadic Mongol and Tatar tribes into a highly disciplined force in the 13th century, it turned out that all other nations have already become civilized and complacent, and no one could stand up to hardy men that rode horses before they could walk and trained to hold a bow before they could ride. The Golden Horde smashed the huge Chinese and Persian empires, forever changing the fate of the world.
When Mongols reached Russia, the Russian Princes were busy squabbling among brothers and did not manage to unite in time. "The strong and the brave stood firm in the field - and died...".
Russians passed under the Mongol yoke, many were driven off as slaves and the rest had to pay tribute to foreign overlords. "Our sweet freedom, where are you now? ... It was good with you, and bad without you. ..."
After a century of oppression, Prince Dmitry of Moscow rose up against the Khan and rallied all free men to his banner. All Russian princedoms forgot their differences and joined. By that time, many formerly Russian lands were ruled by Lithuanians or other rulers loyal to the Khan - "few still remember, of firm body and mind"; but even there, many broke with their masters and came to Dmitry's aid.
Knowing that the Khan personally came to punish the rebels and his army still outnumbered the Russians two to one, Dmitry put his army with their backs to a river, so they could not retreat. Old songs speak of 300,000 Tatars against 150,000 Russians, but modern historic estimates put the numbers at around 125,000 Tatars against 60,000 Russians.
For comparison, one of the largest European battles of the time, Poitiers, that nearly destroyed France, involved 6,000 English troops fighting 11,000 French.
The fighting went on for most of the day, with both sides taking very heavy losses. Prince Dmitry gave his armor to his retainer, and fought as a common knight himself; the retainer was cut down, and the Grand Prince heavily wounded. When, in the end, Russian infantry started giving ground, hidden Russian knights suddenly charged out of a forest and "rolled" the Mongol line, leading to a general rout; the Mongol army was destroyed, and the Khan soon got assassinated by a rival.
This impossible feat of beating an empire that conquered half the known world is said to have forged the Russian nation - soldiers came onto Kulikovo field as men of Princedoms of Tver, Suzdal, Rostov, Yaroslavl, Polotsk, Murom, Smolensk, Ryazan... and left as men of Russia.
This scenario repeated several times afterward:
Early 17th century (so-called "Time of Troubles"), the last Rurikid Tsar died, state largely collapsed and Poles installed an impostor on the throne - a minor noble Pozharsky and a merchant Minin called up a people's militia and drove them out (those are the people on my userpic, BTW).
Napoleon's invasion of 1812 - the army that took over Europe collapsed due to being unable to break the Russian army (battle of Borodino - the bloodiest day of fighting in human history, and a draw) and Russian commoners attacking its supply lines.
And of course the Nazi invasion of USSR, when Nazis encircled and destroyed the professional Soviet army in the blitzkrieg, only to be faced with an endless stream of volunteers replacing those that fell (see more in footnotes to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duryV... )
This same spirit is what drives the republican forces in Donbass now: initially very heavily outnumbered and outgunned, they held out through the first summer facing objectively impossible odds, stopping modern tanks with obsolete WWII anti-tank rifles, etc. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPw--... ). It is also worth noting that many of the militiamen are men in their 40s and 50s, who are propelled by the Soviet ideology of duty, honor, and protecting their homeland, whereas some younger men consider Western values of consumerism more to their liking.

PS. One other note: "Tell me, cuckoo. Count time." refers to the Russian superstition that the repetitive call of the cuckoo tells the listener how many years one has left to live.

STORYLINE
Russians in the capital and across the country marked National Unity Day on Sunday, including far-right nationalists appropriating for their own cause a new holiday created by the Kremlin to promote patriotism.
National Unity Day was created by Putin in 2005 to replace a holiday dedicated to the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution that had been celebrated on November 7 during Soviet times.
Putin, together with cadets of the Nakhimov and Suvorov military colleges and with representatives of youth organisations, laid a wreath at the monument to Russian heroes Minin and Pozharsky near the Red Square.
After the ceremony Vladimir Putin said that there are people in the world who wish to split Russia and take over its vast natural resources and others that would like to "rule over all mankind," a veiled reference to the United States.
Speaking in front of Moscow's iconic St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square, Putin told a group of military cadets and youth group members that while "an overwhelming majority of people in the world" are friendly toward Russia there are some that "keep saying to this day that our nation should be split."
"Some believe that we are too lucky to possess so much natural wealth, which they say must be divided," Putin added.
Putin said such people have "lost their mind,".
Putin, whose two-term presidency ends next year, said Russia will continue playing an active role in foreign policy and there are many people who look to Russia as a defender of small nations' rights and interests.
One of Sunday's rallies was staged by the staged by the far-right Movement Against
supremacist group.

In this video speaking Michail Degtyarev, who is one of top members of LDPR, and was a candidate for mayor of Moscow. He's together with Zhirinovsky, but Zhirinovsky let him speak. There is actually a reason for this. Opposers of LDPR, not being able to find any legit arguments, are always calling in a 1 man party. Meaning, that: ''No Zhirinovsky - no LDPR''. So lately, he started to send his party members for these kind of interviews, and he will only be speaking in Duma or give interviews in his office. I don't think it's baseless either. I think unfortunately he is preparing to retire. Many believe that Degtyarev is gonna be the next party leader. Personally, I don't think that he's suitable. There are 2 other deputies that I think are far more appropriate for the job.
Anyway, in this video Degtyarev speaks about Facebook blocking few of those ''liberal'' opposition pages. Navalny, in particular. Who is Navalny? A fucking NAZI. I got a great video where Zhirinovsky speaks about him in full extent. I'll upload it at some point.

PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN: Good afternoon dear friends! Ladies and gentlemen!
I congratulate you on National Unity Day.
This date only appeared in our calendars last year. And before then there were no official holidays in Russia commemorating pre-Soviet history.
Almost four centuries ago, during the hardest times of troubles and civil strife, the multinational people of our country united in order to preserve Russias independence and statehood.
Russias great citizens Kuzma Minin and Dmitrii Pozharskii lead a national home guard that put an end to the troubles and returned law and order to our land.
And therefore National Unity Day is a holiday for all members of civil society in todays Russia. It is a day when we pay tribute to a centuries-old tradition of patriotism, harmony and unity of our people. And wherever the sons and daughters of Russia live, then this historical past will unite us all.
Today Russia is open to all people who identify with its destiny. And I am sincerely glad to see compatriots from the widest variety of countries here at the reception. I want to emphasise that we deeply appreciate your aspirations to consolidate the Russian people around our historical Motherland, we value your desire to be of use to Russia, and to strengthen its authority. All of this was confirmed in the World Congress of Russians Abroad that was held recently in St Petersburg.
A number of Russian language and literature teachers, academics, art critics, and both Russian and foreign publishers of Russian-language publications are present here in the Kremlin today.
I would like to warmly thank you for the invaluable contribution you have made towards distributing Russian culture, a culture which has become an integral part of humanitys spiritual heritage.
Your hearts are filled with love for the Russian language, something which is not only our common heritage, it is also a strong base for friendship and cooperation. This especially concerns the compatriots living in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
In addition to this, Russian language has an obvious significance for the development of world civilization, since many books on topics such as history, culture and scientific discoveries have been written in Russian. And not only by Russians but also other peoples as well, and not only the peoples of the Russian Federation but almost all the nations of the world.
I am especially pleased to tell this auditorium that in 2007 we will hold the Year of Russian Language in Russia and everywhere in the world where people know, love and value Russian language. I am convinced that the events connected with this year will occasion a great deal of interest and will strengthen international ties in the cultural and educational spheres.
Dear friends!
We are all children of our country and its history. And this historic, genetic memory of our people calls on us to unite, gives us a general responsibility for the destiny of our native land, calls on us to establish forces together and to unite our forces in the name of the present and future Russia.
Thank you for your attention.
Dear friends, allow me to congratulate once again all those present on this occasion, to express special words of gratitude to the award winners for the invaluable contribution they make towards developing Russian language and culture. To friendship, to cooperation, to Russia!

The Russian gunsmith Mikhail Kalashnikov developed his famous AK-47 in the 1940s and it remains one of the world's most popular and reliable submachine guns.
Kalashnikov says he always lived according to the principle "All complicated is unnecessary, all necessary is simple".

The AK-47 assault rifle, designed in the 1940s, remains the hands-down winner when it comes to machine guns.
It's simple design and ease of use has made it popular among working soldiers around the globe.
Made in 11 countries, used by 55 armies, the Ak-47 (or Avtomat Kalashnikova) was developed after the Great Patriotic war.
It was the brainchild of a 21-year-old tank commander named Mikhail Kalashnikov. He was wounded in battle in October 1941 and decided to create a gun to repel the invaders from his home country.
"I read this maxim. The Great Lord said, 'All complicated is unnecessary, all necessary is simple.' This is a slogan I have been living and working all my life," Kalashnikov said.
This gun has had a huge influence on warfare over 60 years.
The AK-47 was used during the Vietnam War, and is still in use in the Middle East, Africa, and throughout Latin America.
Military forces throughout the world recognize the advantage of the simple weapon.
It's estimated there are about 100 million AKs in the world -- more than any other assault firearm.
The gun is depicted on the flags and coat of arms of several countries and organizations.
But its inventor is upset by misuse of the gun. Kalashnikov as long called for strict controls on the sale and production of AKs.
"We need them to be under strict control and we need to counteract the manufacturing of counterfeit assault rifles by those who aim just at killing or wounding someone. We need an unequivocal struggle against this. This is what I demand," he said.
Retired General Kalashnikov made no money from his gun. But he has sold the Kalashnikov brand name. Now it appears on goods as varied as watches, mp3 players and off-road cars.

Dmitry Mikhaylovich Pozharsky (Russian: Дмитрий Михайлович Пожарский) (October 17, 1577 - April 30, 1642) was a Rurikid prince, who led Russia's struggle for independence against Polish-Lithuanian invasion known as the Time of Troubles. He obtained from Mikhail I of Russia the unprecedented title Saviour of the Motherland.
Pozharsky was descended from a dynasty of sovereign princes which ruled the town of Starodub-on-the-Klyazma near Suzdal. At one point in the 15th century their family patrimony burned to the ground, in consequence of which event they assumed the name of Pozharsky (from pozhar, the Russian word for conflagration). It is interesting to note that Dmitry's mother came from the Beklemishev family, just like the mother of Mikhail Kutuzov, who would be credited with saving Russia precisely two centuries after him.
The family was never particularly prominent, and Pozharsky's early career was not documented until he took part in the Zemsky sobor which elected Boris Godunov to the throne in 1598. Four years later, he was attested as a stolnik. When the Time of Troubles broke out upon Godunov's death, he was present at the defense of Kolomna (1608) and helped Vasily IV during the Siege of Moscow in 1609. Later that year, he routed the Bolotnikov Cossacks at the Pekhorka River. In 1610, Pozharsky was in command at the defense of Zaraysk against the forces of False Dmitry II.

This holiday is still new it is the youngest of all our national holidays. It was established only recently, five years ago, to mark our respect for our heroic history and honour the memory of the destiny-making feat that our people accomplished. Nearly four centuries have passed since that day when people of different social backgrounds, ethnic groups and religions rallied around Kuzma Minins and Dmitry Pozharskys call for unity. They organised a volunteer force and liberated Moscow from foreign invaders. Our peoples unity saved our country at that point in time, saved it from internal strife and external interference and danger, ended the tribulations of the Time of Troubles and ultimately prevented the country from falling apart, thus setting Russia on its historic destiny as a strong and influential state. I have just returned from Suzdal, where I took part in opening a memorial chapel at the grave of Dmitry Pozharsky. This is a unique place and a unique memorial. It was built in 1885 and took almost twenty years to complete. In the 1930s, like many of our monuments, it was destroyed. Now we have rebuilt it. It took two years to rebuild. I think this is an excellent symbol on the Day of National Unity. Furthermore, it was restored not with state subsidies, but with money donated by the public. It was built on public donations in the nineteenth century, and now has been restored using public donations in the twenty-first century. It unquestionably reminds us of the feat of our outstanding citizen, Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, and of the courage shown by all the heroes who formed the volunteer force. Back in that distant year 1612, the Russian people united around their love for their homeland, their desire for freedom, and, of course, their sense of responsibility for their countrys destiny. Over the centuries these values have helped our people overcome the severest trials, achieve success and emerge victorious. Dear friends, In keeping with the traditions that have already formed over these last few years, present here today are representatives of Russian non-governmental organisations, ethnic-cultural and religious groups. You are all people whose influence and active stand as citizens are helping to strengthen our civil society, social stability and interethnic harmony. I also welcome our foreign guests, true enthusiasts, who make efforts at the highest level to support interest in our history and culture, promote the study of Russian, and preserve the integrity and diversity of the unique phenomenon that we call the Russian world, which unites our compatriots abroad and all friends of Russia in every corner of our planet. By tradition, on the Day of National Unity we honour and thank you and of course award state decorations. Once again, I congratulate you sincerely on this holiday and ask that we now begin the state decorations award ceremony. Russians passed under the Mongol yoke, many were driven off as slaves and the rest had to pay tribute to foreign overlords. "Our sweet freedom, where are you now? ... It was good with you, and bad without you. ..." After a century of oppression, Prince Dmitry of Moscow rose up against the Khan and rallied all free men to his banner. All Russian princedoms forgot their differences and joined. By that time, many formerly Russian lands were ruled by Lithuanians or other rulers loyal to the Khan - "few still remember, of firm body and mind"; but even there, many broke with their masters and came to Dmitry's aid. Knowing that the Khan personally came to punish the rebels and his army still outnumbered the Russians two to one, Dmitry put his army with their backs to a river, so they could not retreat. Old songs speak of 300,000 Tatars against 150,000 Russians, but modern historic estimates put the numbers at around 125,000 Tatars against 60,000 Russians. For comparison, one of the largest European battles of the time, Poitiers, that nearly destroyed France, involved 6,000 English troops fighting 11,000 French. The fighting went on for most of the day, with both sides taking very heavy losses. Prince Dmitry gave his armor to his retainer, and fought as a common knight himself; the retainer was cut down, and the Grand Prince heavily wounded. When, in the end, Russian infantry started giving ground, hidden Russian knights suddenly charged out of a forest and "rolled" the Mongol line, leading to a general rout; the Mongol army was destroyed, and the Khan soon got assassinated by a rival. This impossible feat of beating an empire that conquered half the known world is said to have forged the Russian nation - soldiers came onto Kulikovo field as men of Princedoms of Tver, Suzdal, Rostov, Yaroslavl, Polotsk, Murom, Smolensk, Ryazan... and left as men of Russia. This scenario repeated several times afterward: Early 17th century (so-called "Time of Troubles"), the last Rurikid Tsar died, state largely collapsed and Poles installed an impostor on the throne - a minor noble Pozharsky and a merchant Minin called up a people's militia and drove them out (those are the people on my userpic, BTW). Napoleon's invasion of 1812 - the army that took over Europe collapsed due to being unable to break the Russian army (battle of Borodino - the bloodiest day of fighting in human history, and a draw) and Russian commoners attacking its supply lines. And of course the Nazi invasion of USSR, when Nazis encircled and destroyed the professional Soviet army in the blitzkrieg, only to be faced with an endless stream of volunteers replacing those that fell (see more in footnotes to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duryV... ) This same spirit is what drives the republican forces in Donbass now: initially very heavily outnumbered and outgunned, they held out through the first summer facing objectively impossible odds, stopping modern tanks with obsolete WWII anti-tank rifles, etc. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPw--... ). Ladies and gentlemen! I congratulate you on National Unity Day. This date only appeared in our calendars last year. And before then there were no official holidays in Russia commemorating pre-Soviet history. Almost four centuries ago, during the hardest times of troubles and civil strife, the multinational people of our country united in order to preserve Russias independence and statehood. Russias great citizens Kuzma Minin and Dmitrii Pozharskii lead a national home guard that put an end to the troubles and returned law and order to our land. And therefore National Unity Day is a holiday for all members of civil society in todays Russia. It is a day when we pay tribute to a centuries-old tradition of patriotism, harmony and unity of our people. And wherever the sons and daughters of Russia live, then this historical past will unite us all. Today Russia is open to all people who identify with its destiny. And I am sincerely glad to see compatriots from the widest variety of countries here at the reception. I want to emphasise that we deeply appreciate your aspirations to consolidate the Russian people around our historical Motherland, we value your desire to be of use to Russia, and to strengthen its authority. All of this was confirmed in the World Congress of Russians Abroad that was held recently in St Petersburg. A number of Russian language and literature teachers, academics, art critics, and both Russian and foreign publishers of Russian-language publications are present here in the Kremlin today. I would like to warmly thank you for the invaluable contribution you have made towards distributing Russian culture, a culture which has become an integral part of humanitys spiritual heritage. Your hearts are filled with love for the Russian language, something which is not only our common heritage, it is also a strong base for friendship and cooperation. This especially concerns the compatriots living in the countries of the former Soviet Union. In addition to this, Russian language has an obvious significance for the development of world civilization, since many books on topics such as history, culture and scientific discoveries have been written in Russian. And not only by Russians but also other peoples as well, and not only the peoples of the Russian Federation but almost all the nations of the world. I am especially pleased to tell this auditorium that in 2007 we will hold the Year of Russian Language in Russia and everywhere in the world where people know, love and value Russian language. This gun has had a huge influence on warfare over 60 years. The AK-47 was used during the Vietnam War, and is still in use in the Middle East, Africa, and throughout Latin America. Military forces throughout the world recognize the advantage of the simple weapon. It's estimated there are about 100 million AKs in the world -- more than any other assault firearm. The gun is depicted on the flags and coat of arms of several countries and organizations. But its inventor is upset by misuse of the gun. Kalashnikov as long called for strict controls on the sale and production of AKs. "We need them to be under strict control and we need to counteract the manufacturing of counterfeit assault rifles by those who aim just at killing or wounding someone. We need an unequivocal struggle against this. This is what I demand," he said. Retired General Kalashnikov made no money from his gun. But he has sold the Kalashnikov brand name. Let me begin by congratulating everyone on our national holiday, the Day of National Unity. This holiday is still new it is the youngest of all our national holidays. It was established only recently, five years ago, to mark our respect for our heroic history and honour the memory of the destiny-making feat that our people accomplished.
Nearly four centuries have passed since that day when people of different social backgrounds, ethnic groups and religions rallied around Kuzma Minins and Dmitry Pozharskys call for unity. They organised a volunteer force and liberated Moscow from foreign invaders. Our peoples unity saved our country at that point in time, saved it from internal strife and external interference and danger, ended the tribulations of the Time of Troubles and ultimately prevented the country from falling apart, thus setting Russia on its historic destiny as a strong and influential state.
I have just returned from Suzdal, where I took part in opening a memorial chapel at the grave of Dmitry Pozharsky. This is a unique place and a unique memorial. It was built in 1885 and took almost twenty years to complete. In the 1930s, like many of our monuments, it was destroyed. Now we have rebuilt it. It took two years to rebuild. I think this is an excellent symbol on the Day of National Unity. Furthermore, it was restored not with state subsidies, but with money donated by the public. It was built on public donations in the nineteenth century, and now has been restored using public donations in the twenty-first century. It unquestionably reminds us of the feat of our outstanding citizen, Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, and of the courage shown by all the heroes who formed the volunteer force.
Back in that distant year 1612, the Russian people united around their love for their homeland, their desire for freedom, and, of course, their sense of responsibility for their countrys destiny. Over the centuries these values have helped our people overcome the severest trials, achieve success and emerge victorious.
Dear friends,
In keeping with the traditions that have already formed over these last few years, present here today are representatives of Russian non-governmental organisations, ethnic-cultural and religious groups. You are all people whose influence and active stand as citizens are helping to strengthen our civil society, social stability and interethnic harmony.
I also welcome our foreign guests, true enthusiasts, who make efforts at the highest level to support interest in our history and culture, promote the study of Russian, and preserve the integrity and diversity of the unique phenomenon that we call the Russian world, which unites our compatriots abroad and all friends of Russia in every corner of our planet.
By tradition, on the Day of National Unity we honour and thank you and of course award state decorations.
Once again, I congratulate you sincerely on this holiday and ask that we now begin the state decorations award ceremony.
PERMANENT SECRETARY OF THE ACADEMIE FRANCAISE HELENE CARRERE DENCAUSSE: I would like to thank you for this award from the bottom of my heart; it is a great honour for me. It is a particularly significant honour for me because, as you know, my ancestors come from this nation. Many of their names are written on the walls of this St George Hall, and I have devoted my entire professional life to becoming closer to Russia. I am a Frenchwoman, but a Frenchwoman with a Russian heart. I love this nation, and I can say that the only thing thats important to me is to try to explain Russia to the French. I have educated a generation of students and many readers, and I am certain that as the French truly love Russia, as our countries have very close relations which are unique because they are not some standard relations between two nations; instead, they resemble sincere relations between family members, whats therefore most important for me is to further improve our relations. Soon, the Year of France will be held in Russia, and the Year of Russia will be held in France. I will try to work as hard as I can for these projects, and I am grateful to you, Mr President, for this sign of appreciation.

The Golden Horde smashed the huge Chinese and Persian empires, forever changing the fate of the world.
When Mongols reached Russia, the Russian Princes were busy squabbling among brothers and did not manage to unite in time. "The strong and the brave stood firm in the field - and died...".
Russians passed under the Mongol yoke, many were driven off as slaves and the rest had to pay tribute to foreign overlords. "Our sweet freedom, where are you now? ... It was good with you, and bad without you. ..."
After a century of oppression, Prince Dmitry of Moscow rose up against the Khan and rallied all free men to his banner. All Russian princedoms forgot their differences and joined. By that time, many formerly Russian lands were ruled by Lithuanians or other rulers loyal to the Khan - "few still remember, of firm body and mind"; but even there, many broke with their masters and came to Dmitry's aid.
Knowing that the Khan personally came to punish the rebels and his army still outnumbered the Russians two to one, Dmitry put his army with their backs to a river, so they could not retreat. Old songs speak of 300,000 Tatars against 150,000 Russians, but modern historic estimates put the numbers at around 125,000 Tatars against 60,000 Russians.
For comparison, one of the largest European battles of the time, Poitiers, that nearly destroyed France, involved 6,000 English troops fighting 11,000 French.
The fighting went on for most of the day, with both sides taking very heavy losses. Prince Dmitry gave his armor to his retainer, and fought as a common knight himself; the retainer was cut down, and the Grand Prince heavily wounded. When, in the end, Russian infantry started giving ground, hidden Russian knights suddenly charged out of a forest and "rolled" the Mongol line, leading to a general rout; the Mongol army was destroyed, and the Khan soon got assassinated by a rival.
This impossible feat of beating an empire that conquered half the known world is said to have forged the Russian nation - soldiers came onto Kulikovo field as men of Princedoms of Tver, Suzdal, Rostov, Yaroslavl, Polotsk, Murom, Smolensk, Ryazan... and left as men of Russia.
This scenario repeated several times afterward:
Early 17th century (so-called "Time of Troubles"), the last Rurikid Tsar died, state largely collapsed and Poles installed an impostor on the throne - a minor noble Pozharsky and a merchant Minin called up a people's militia and drove them out (those are the people on my userpic, BTW).
Napoleon's invasion of 1812 - the army that took over Europe collapsed due to being unable to break the Russian army (battle of Borodino - the bloodiest day of fighting in human history, and a draw) and Russian commoners attacking its supply lines.
And of course the Nazi invasion of USSR, when Nazis encircled and destroyed the professional Soviet army in the blitzkrieg, only to be faced with an endless stream of volunteers replacing those that fell (see more in footnotes to this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duryV... )
This same spirit is what drives the republican forces in Donbass now: initially very heavily outnumbered and outgunned, they held out through the first summer facing objectively impossible odds, stopping modern tanks with obsolete WWII anti-tank rifles, etc. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OPw--... ). It is also worth noting that many of the militiamen are men in their 40s and 50s, who are propelled by the Soviet ideology of duty, honor, and protecting their homeland, whereas some younger men consider Western values of consumerism more to their liking.

National Unity Day was created by Putin in 2005 to replace a holiday dedicated to the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution that had been celebrated on November 7 during Soviet times.
Putin, together with cadets of the Nakhimov and Suvorov military colleges and with representatives of youth organisations, laid a wreath at the monument to Russian heroes Minin and Pozharsky near the Red Square.
After the ceremony Vladimir Putin said that there are people in the world who wish to split Russia and take over its vast natural resources and others that would like to "rule over all mankind," a veiled reference to the United States.
Speaking in front of Moscow's iconic St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square, Putin told a group of military cadets and youth group members that while "an overwhelming majority of people in the world" are friendly toward Russia there are some that "keep saying to this day that our nation should be split."
"Some believe that we are too lucky to possess so much natural wealth, which they say must be divided," Putin added.
Putin said such people have "lost their mind,".
Putin, whose two-term presidency ends next year, said Russia will continue playing an active role in foreign policy and there are many people who look to Russia as a defender of small nations' rights and interests.

PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN: Good afternoon dear friends! Ladies and gentlemen!
I congratulate you on National Unity Day.
This date only appeared in our calendars last year. And before then there were no official holidays in Russia commemorating pre-Soviet history.
Almost four centuries ago, during the hardest times of troubles and civil strife, the multinational people of our country united in order to preserve Russias independence and statehood.
Russias great citizens Kuzma Minin and Dmitrii Pozharskii lead a national home guard that put an end to the troubles and returned law and order to our land.
And therefore National Unity Day is a holiday for all members of civil society in todays Russia. It is a day when we pay tribute to a centuries-old tradition of patriotism, harmony and unity of our people. And wherever the sons and daughters of Russia live, then this historical past will unite us all.
Today Russia is open to all people who identify with its destiny. And I am sincerely glad to see compatriots from the widest variety of countries here at the reception. I want to emphasise that we deeply appreciate your aspirations to consolidate the Russian people around our historical Motherland, we value your desire to be of use to Russia, and to strengthen its authority. All of this was confirmed in the World Congress of Russians Abroad that was held recently in St Petersburg.
A number of Russian language and literature teachers, academics, art critics, and both Russian and foreign publishers of Russian-language publications are present here in the Kremlin today.
I would like to warmly thank you for the invaluable contribution you have made towards distributing Russian culture, a culture which has become an integral part of humanitys spiritual heritage.
Your hearts are filled with love for the Russian language, something which is not only our common heritage, it is also a strong base for friendship and cooperation. This especially concerns the compatriots living in the countries of the former Soviet Union.
In addition to this, Russian language has an obvious significance for the development of world civilization, since many books on topics such as history, culture and scientific discoveries have been written in Russian. And not only by Russians but also other peoples as well, and not only the peoples of the Russian Federation but almost all the nations of the world.
I am especially pleased to tell this auditorium that in 2007 we will hold the Year of Russian Language in Russia and everywhere in the world where people know, love and value Russian language. I am convinced that the events connected with this year will occasion a great deal of interest and will strengthen international ties in the cultural and educational spheres.
Dear friends!
We are all children of our country and its history. And this historic, genetic memory of our people calls on us to unite, gives us a general responsibility for the destiny of our native land, calls on us to establish forces together and to unite our forces in the name of the present and future Russia.

The Russian gunsmith Mikhail Kalashnikov developed his famous AK-47 in the 1940s and it remains one of the world's most popular and reliable submachine guns.
Kalashnikov says he always lived according to the principle "All complicated is unnecessary, all necessary is simple".

The AK-47 assault rifle, designed in the 1940s, remains the hands-down winner when it comes to machine guns.
It's simple design and ease of use has made it popular among working soldiers around the globe.
Made in 11 countries, used by 55 armies, the Ak-47 (or Avtomat Kalashnikova) was developed after the Great Patriotic war.
It was the brainchild of a 21-year-old tank commander named Mikhail Kalashnikov. He was wounded in battle in October 1941 and decided to create a gun to repel the invaders from his home country.
"I read this maxim. The Great Lord said, 'All complicated is unnecessary, all necessary is simple.' This is a slogan I have been living and working all my life," Kalashnikov said.
This gun has had a huge influence on warfare over 60 years.
The AK-47 was used during the Vietnam War, and is still in use in the Middle East, Africa, and throughout Latin America.
Military forces throughout the world recognize the advantage of the simple weapon.
It's estimated there are about 100 million AKs in the world -- more than any other assault firearm.
The gun is depicted on the flags and coat of arms of several countries and organizations.
But its inventor is upset by misuse of the gun. Kalashnikov as long called for strict controls on the sale and production of AKs.
"We need them to be under strict control and we need to counteract the manufacturing of counterfeit assault rifles by those who aim just at killing or wounding someone. We need an unequivocal struggle against this. This is what I demand," he said.
Retired General Kalashnikov made no money from his gun. But he has sold the Kalashnikov brand name. Now it appears on goods as varied as watches, mp3 players and off-road cars.

The Russian gunsmith Mikhail Kalashnikov developed his famous AK-47 in the 1940s and it remains one of the world's most popular and reliable submachine guns.
Kalashnikov says he always lived according to the principle "All complicated is unnecessary, all necessary is simple".

The AK-47 assault rifle, designed in the 1940s, remains the hands-down winner when it comes to machine guns.
It's simple design and ease of use has made it popular among working soldiers around the globe.
Made in 11 countries, used by 55 armies, the Ak-47 (or Avtomat Kalashnikova) was developed after the Great Patriotic war.
It was the brainchild of a 21-year-old tank commander named Mikhail Kalashnikov. He was wounded in battle in October 1941 and decided to create a gun to repel the invaders from his home country.
"I read this maxim. The Great Lord said, 'All complicated is unnecessary, all necessary is simple.' This is a slogan I have been living and working all my life," Kalashnikov said.
This gun has had a huge influence on warfare over 60 years.
The AK-47 was used during the Vietnam War, and is still in use in the Middle East, Africa, and throughout Latin America.
Military forces throughout the world recognize the advantage of the simple weapon.
It's estimated there are about 100 million AKs in the world -- more than any other assault firearm.
The gun is depicted on the flags and coat of arms of several countries and organizations.
But its inventor is upset by misuse of the gun. Kalashnikov as long called for strict controls on the sale and production of AKs.
"We need them to be under strict control and we need to counteract the manufacturing of counterfeit assault rifles by those who aim just at killing or wounding someone. We need an unequivocal struggle against this. This is what I demand," he said.
Retired General Kalashnikov made no money from his gun. But he has sold the Kalashnikov brand name. Now it appears on goods as varied as watches, mp3 players and off-road cars.
