Premature Burial

Edit The Quietus 05 Oct 2015
you'll always either get better and/or boring ... Premature Burial are a horn and electronics trio (Matt Nelson — whose burner work solo and with Battle Trance I've reviewed here before — on saxophone and electronics, along with Peter Evans on piccolo trumpet and Dan Peck on tuba and effects) who produce gut wrenching, dome bending squall apropos of the Poe story from whence they gripped their moniker ... I can't say I'm sure anymore). ....

A Sweet App That Helps You Visualize Complex Rhythms

Edit Austin American Statesman 05 May 2015
Darwin thought our ancestors used music as a means of courtship before the invention of language. Other experts have suggested that humming and stomping whipped early man into a communal "battle trance." Whatever the case, rhythm has been part of the human experience for as long as there's been a human experience. See the full story at Wired. Most Read. More from Statesman.com ... Weather ... Matt Nelson

Edit The Quietus 20 Oct 2014
Being a for-hire musician seems weird. Making a living as a musician lends itself to strange bedfellows ... Matt Nelson, as far as I can tell, is a professional saxophonist. He's toured with the insufferably capitalised (and yes, I mean that as a double entendre) tUnE-yArDs, plays occasionally with Brooklyn pop experimentalists Skeletons, and has most recently become a member of aut tenor sax quartet Battle Trance ... Not so ... ....

Battle Trance

Edit The Quietus 02 Oct 2014
Though far from being as widely loathed as, say, bagpipes, the saxophone remains a divisive instrument in many circles ... "Clarence Clemons bullshit", I believe he called it ... Still, I can't help but wonder what he would think of Battle Trance's new album Palace Of Wind ... utilising circular breathing and other extended techniques, Battle Trance create massive, undulating waves of sound which have relatively few clear precedents ... ....
