Tutankhamun (/ˌtuːtənkɑːˈmuːn/; alternatively spelled with Tutenkh-, -amen, -amon) was an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty (ruled c. 1332–1323 BC in the conventional chronology), during the period of Egyptian history known as the New Kingdom. He is colloquially referred to as King Tut. His original name, Tutankhaten, means "Living Image of Aten", while Tutankhamun means "Living Image of Amun". In hieroglyphs, the name Tutankhamun was typically written Amen-tut-ankh, because of a scribal custom that placed a divine name at the beginning of a phrase to show appropriate reverence. He is possibly also the Nibhurrereya of the Amarna letters, and likely the 18th dynasty king Rathotis who, according to Manetho, an ancient historian, had reigned for nine years—a figure that conforms with Flavius Josephus's version of Manetho's Epitome.
The 1922 discovery by Howard Carter and George Herbert of Tutankhamun's nearly intact tomb received worldwide press coverage. It sparked a renewed public interest in ancient Egypt, for which Tutankhamun's mask, now in the Egyptian Museum, remains the popular symbol. Exhibits of artifacts from his tomb have toured the world. In February 2010, the results of DNA tests confirmed that he was the son of Akhenaten (mummy KV55). His mother was Akhenaten's sister and wife (mummy KV35YL), whose name is unknown but whose remains are positively identified as "The Younger Lady" mummy found in KV35. The "mysterious" deaths of a few of those who excavated Tutankhamun's tomb has been popularly attributed to the curse of the pharaohs.

Tutankhamun : Curse of the Boy King For 3000 years the treasures of Tutenkahmun lay entombed beneath Egypt’s desert sands, until archaeologists disturbed the pharaoh’s rest and unleashed a deadly curse. It’s a controversial issue that scientists dismiss out of hand, yet the threat of an ancient curse has enthralled the public for nearly 100 years. When an Egyptian King died suddenly 3000 years ago it marked the start of an ancient murder mystery that baffled scientists to this day. Far more chilling than the death of this young pharaoh, is the mystery of his curse, said to have caused a sinister series of deaths that began with the opening of his to...
With strong features cast in burnished gold, Tutankhamun’s burial mask projects an image of majestic beauty and royal power. But in the flesh, King Tut had buck teeth, a club foot and girlish hips, according to the most detailed examination ever of the ancient Egyptian pharaoh’s remains. And rather than being a boy king with a love of chariot racing, Tut relied on walking sticks to get around during his rule in the 14th century BC, researchers said. A ‘virtual autopsy’, composed of more than 2,000 computer scans, was carried out in tandem with a genetic analysis of Tutankhamun’s family, which supports evidence that his parents were brother and sister. The scientists believe that this left him with physical impairments triggered by hormonal imbalances. And his family history could also ...

A British research team is taking a fresh look at forensic evidence left behind more than 3,000 years ago in an attempt to solve the mystery of what killed Egypt's King Tutankhamun. Elizabeth Palmer reports.
Ribs wrapped in ribbons
And his eyes full of clay
Tutankhamun's comin' for his summer holiday
Walkin' down the road in his chevrolet
Better never git in his way
Common folk are hummin'
Cause Tutankhamun's comin'
Ribbons wrap his ribs
He remembers what he gives
Tutankhamun lives
Cause the gibbon never gibs
And it's his word
That you just heard, oh yes
