In Unix-like operating systems, a device file or special file is an interface for a device driver that appears in a file system as if it were an ordinary file. There are also special files in MS-DOS, OS/2, and Microsoft Windows. They allow software to interact with a device driver using standard input/output system calls, which simplifies many tasks and unifies user-space I/O mechanisms.
Device files often provide simple interfaces to peripheral devices, such as printers and serial ports. But they can also be used to access specific resources on those devices, such as disk partitions. Finally, device files are useful for accessing system resources that have no connection with any actual device such as data sinks and random number generators.

What is NAS and why you need it

Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to heterogeneous network clients.
A NAS unit is essentially a self-contained computer connected to a network, with the sole purpose of supplying file-based data storage services to other devices on the network. The operating system and other software on the NAS unit provide the functionality of data storage, file systems, and access to files, and the management of these functionalities. The unit is not designed to carry out general-purpose computing tasks, although it may technically be possible to run other software on it. NAS units usually do not have a keyboard or display, and are controlled and configured over the network, often by connecting a browser to their network address. The alternative to NAS storage on a network is to use a computer as a file server. In its most basic form a dedicated file server is no more than a NAS unit with keyboard and display and an operating system which, while optimised for providing storage services, can run other tasks; however, file servers are increasingly used to supply other functionality, such as supplying database services, email services, and so on.
A general-purpose operating system is not needed on a NAS device, and often minimal-functionality or stripped-down operating systems are used. For example FreeNAS, which is Free / open source NAS software designed for use on standard computer hardware, is just a version of FreeBSD with all functionality not related to data storage stripped out. NASLite is a highly optimized Linux distribution running from a floppy disk for the sole purpose of a NAS. Likewise, NexentaStor is based upon the core of the NexentaOS, a Free / open source hybrid operating system with an OpenSolaris core and a GNU user environment.
NAS systems contain one or more hard disks, often arranged into logical, redundant storage containers or RAID arrays (redundant arrays of inexpensive/independent disks). NAS removes the responsibility of file serving from other servers on the network.
NAS uses file-based protocols such as NFS (popular on UNIX systems) or SMB/CIFS (Server Message Block/Common Internet File System) (used with MS Windows systems). NAS units rarely limit clients to a single protocol.
NAS provides both storage and filesystem. This is often contrasted with SAN (Storage Area Network), which provides only block-based storage and leaves filesystem concerns on the "client" side. SAN protocols are SCSI, Fibre Channel, iSCSI, ATA over Ethernet (AoE), or HyperSCSI.
Despite differences SAN and NAS are not exclusive and may be combined in one solution: SAN-NAS hybrid
The boundaries between NAS and SAN systems are starting to overlap, with some products making the obvious next evolution and offering both file level protocols (NAS) and block level protocols (SAN) from the same system. However a SAN device is usually served through NAS as one large flat file, not as a true filesystem. An example of this is Openfiler, a free software product running on Linux.

The Mass Responsive Device is a project created during the Computational Design module at CIID.
The device reads raw data from text files, image files and even saved code and responds in a way that reflects the way you have organised the information in the storage device's file structure. Large file-sizes or complex organisation warrant a specific response from the Mass Responsive Device's which, just like human language, forms the composition and tone of the reply. Other variables warrant other responses but ultimately the purpose of the reply was to provide the translation for your storage device's 'voice'.

MS-DOS borrowed the concept of special files from Unix, but renamed them devices. Because early versions of MS-DOS did not support a directory hierarchy, devices were distinguished from regular files by making their names reserved words. This means that certain file names were reserved for devices, and should not be used to name new files or directories. The reserved names themselves were chosen to be compatible with "special files" handling of PIP command in CP/M. There were two kinds of devices in MS-DOS: Block Devices (used for disk drives) and Character Devices (generally all other devices, including COM and PRN devices). PIPE, MAILSLOT, and MUP are other standard Windows devices.

Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to heterogeneous network clients.
A NAS unit is essentially a self-contained computer connected to a network, with the sole purpose of supplying file-based data storage services to other devices on the network. The operating system and other software on the NAS unit provide the functionality of data storage, file systems, and access to files, and the management of these functionalities. The unit is not designed to carry out general-purpose computing tasks, although it may technically be possible to run other software on it. NAS units usually do not have a keyboard or display, and are controlled and configured over the network, often by connecting a browser to their network address. The alternative to NAS storage on a network is to use a computer as a file server. In its most basic form a dedicated file server is no more than a NAS unit with keyboard and display and an operating system which, while optimised for providing storage services, can run other tasks; however, file servers are increasingly used to supply other functionality, such as supplying database services, email services, and so on.
A general-purpose operating system is not needed on a NAS device, and often minimal-functionality or stripped-down operating systems are used. For example FreeNAS, which is Free / open source NAS software designed for use on standard computer hardware, is just a version of FreeBSD with all functionality not related to data storage stripped out. NASLite is a highly optimized Linux distribution running from a floppy disk for the sole purpose of a NAS. Likewise, NexentaStor is based upon the core of the NexentaOS, a Free / open source hybrid operating system with an OpenSolaris core and a GNU user environment.
NAS systems contain one or more hard disks, often arranged into logical, redundant storage containers or RAID arrays (redundant arrays of inexpensive/independent disks). NAS removes the responsibility of file serving from other servers on the network.
NAS uses file-based protocols such as NFS (popular on UNIX systems) or SMB/CIFS (Server Message Block/Common Internet File System) (used with MS Windows systems). NAS units rarely limit clients to a single protocol.
NAS provides both storage and filesystem. This is often contrasted with SAN (Storage Area Network), which provides only block-based storage and leaves filesystem concerns on the "client" side. SAN protocols are SCSI, Fibre Channel, iSCSI, ATA over Ethernet (AoE), or HyperSCSI.
Despite differences SAN and NAS are not exclusive and may be combined in one solution: SAN-NAS hybrid
The boundaries between NAS and SAN systems are starting to overlap, with some products making the obvious next evolution and offering both file level protocols (NAS) and block level protocols (SAN) from the same system. However a SAN device is usually served through NAS as one large flat file, not as a true filesystem. An example of this is Openfiler, a free software product running on Linux.

The device reads raw data from text files, image files and even saved code and responds in a way that reflects the way you have organised the information in the storage device's file structure. Large file-sizes or complex organisation warrant a specific response from the Mass Responsive Device's which, just like human language, forms the composition and tone of the reply. Other variables warrant other responses but ultimately the purpose of the reply was to provide the translation for your storage device's 'voice'.

This video demonstrates the zoom h4n being used as an input directly to your DSLR. So this enables you to record multiple audio devices into the video file of your mp4. Generally with a "line out" it can sometimes be tricky to get the correct setting to record into the "mic in" of your camera.
The benefit of this setup is that you can record better reference audio or have better on camera audio from the zoom. And have the ability to record seperate tracks of audio at the same time, through one device and monitor the audio coming in.
Set you cameras sound record level to 1 notch up from zero, and the zooms headphones/line out to 55.
Your mic levels from the zoom can be roughly 30-50 record level to be safe.

The Mass Responsive Device is a project created during the Computational Design module at CIID. The device reads raw data from text files, image files and even saved code and responds in a way that reflects the way you have organised the information in the storage device's file structure. Large file-sizes or complex organisation warrant a specific response from the Mass Responsive Device's which, just like human language, forms the composition and tone of the reply. Other variables warrant other responses but ultimately the purpose of the reply was to provide the translation for your storage device's 'voice'. Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to heterogeneous network clients.
A NAS unit is essentially a self-contained computer connected to a network, with the sole purpose of supplying file-based data storage services to other devices on the network. The operating system and other software on the NAS unit provide the functionality of data storage, file systems, and access to files, and the management of these functionalities. The unit is not designed to carry out general-purpose computing tasks, although it may technically be possible to run other software on it. NAS units usually do not have a keyboard or display, and are controlled and configured over the network, often by connecting a browser to their network address. The alternative to NAS storage on a network is to use a computer as a file server. In its most basic form a dedicated file server is no more than a NAS unit with keyboard and display and an operating system which, while optimised for providing storage services, can run other tasks; however, file servers are increasingly used to supply other functionality, such as supplying database services, email services, and so on.
A general-purpose operating system is not needed on a NAS device, and often minimal-functionality or stripped-down operating systems are used. For example FreeNAS, which is Free / open source NAS software designed for use on standard computer hardware, is just a version of FreeBSD with all functionality not related to data storage stripped out. NASLite is a highly optimized Linux distribution running from a floppy disk for the sole purpose of a NAS. Likewise, NexentaStor is based upon the core of the NexentaOS, a Free / open source hybrid operating system with an OpenSolaris core and a GNU user environment.
NAS systems contain one or more hard disks, often arranged into logical, redundant storage containers or RAID arrays (redundant arrays of inexpensive/independent disks). NAS removes the responsibility of file serving from other servers on the network.
NAS uses file-based protocols such as NFS (popular on UNIX systems) or SMB/CIFS (Server Message Block/Common Internet File System) (used with MS Windows systems). NAS units rarely limit clients to a single protocol.
NAS provides both storage and filesystem. This is often contrasted with SAN (Storage Area Network), which provides only block-based storage and leaves filesystem concerns on the "client" side. SAN protocols are SCSI, Fibre Channel, iSCSI, ATA over Ethernet (AoE), or HyperSCSI.
Despite differences SAN and NAS are not exclusive and may be combined in one solution: SAN-NAS hybrid
The boundaries between NAS and SAN systems are starting to overlap, with some products making the obvious next evolution and offering both file level protocols (NAS) and block level protocols (SAN) from the same system. However a SAN device is usually served through NAS as one large flat file, not as a true filesystem. An example of this is Openfiler, a free software product running on Linux.

The Mass Responsive Device is a project created during the Computational Design module at CIID.
The device reads raw data from text files, image files and even saved code and responds in a way that reflects the way you have organised the information in the storage device's file structure. Large file-sizes or complex organisation warrant a specific response from the Mass Responsive Device's which, just like human language, forms the composition and tone of the reply. Other variables warrant other responses but ultimately the purpose of the reply was to provide the translation for your storage device's 'voice'.

This video demonstrates the zoom h4n being used as an input directly to your DSLR. So this enables you to record multiple audio devices into the video file of your mp4. Generally with a "line out" it can sometimes be tricky to get the correct setting to record into the "mic in" of your camera.
The benefit of this setup is that you can record better reference audio or have better on camera audio from the zoom. And have the ability to record seperate tracks of audio at the same time, through one device and monitor the audio coming in.
Set you cameras sound record level to 1 notch up from zero, and the zooms headphones/line out to 55.
Your mic levels from the zoom can be roughly 30-50 record level to be safe.
