Dorfman has since confronted the haunting memory of the coup in his books, which include The Empires Old Clothes, Widows, Mascara, Blakes Therapy, Konfidenz, The Nanny and the Iceberg, Other Septembers, Desert Memories, and his prize-winning memoir, Heading South, Looking North, which was the basis for the documentary, A Promise to the Dead, short listed for the Oscars 2008. His play Death and the Maiden (which won the Olivier Award, among dozens of other awards worldwide) was adapted for film by Roman Polanski. His intellectual concerns range wide, from the trial of Augusto Pinochet to bilingualism to American cartoons—his book How to Read Donald Duck was called by John Berger, a handbook for decolonization. Dorfman will take part in a very special discussion about art and politics with Gabriel Sanders, deputy editor of the online magazine Tablet.

Uno puede decir que es escritor y ensayista, y él también dice que es un rompe culos oficial. Después nos va a tener que explicar qué significa esta definición.
Aclaramos que es una persona que maneja muy bien el lenguaje; lo maneja de una manera extraordinaria en castellano y de una manera extraordinaria en inglés. Ha jugado mucho también con el tema de la interpretación del lenguaje, y su clásico libro Para leer al Pato Donald nada menos tiene que ver con ello, con el lenguaje y las imágenes.

Feeding on Dreams is the story of the transformative decades of exile that followed. Dorfman portrays, through visceral scenes and powerful intellect, the personal and political maelstroms underlying his migrations from Buenos Aires, on the run from Pinochet's death squads, to safe houses in Paris and Amsterdam, and eventually to America, his childhood home. And then, seventeen years after he was forced to leave, there is a yearned-for return to Chile, with an unimaginable outcome. The toll on Dorfman's wife and two sons, the "earthquake of language" that is bilingualism, and his eventual questioning of his allegiance to past and party—all these crucibles of a life in exile are revealed with wry and startling honesty.

Vladimiro Ariel Dorfman (born May 6, 1942) is an Argentine-Chilean novelist, playwright, essayist, academic, and human rights activist. A citizen of the United States since 2004, he has been a professor of literature and Latin American Studies at Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina since 1985.
Dorfman was born in Buenos Aires on May 6, 1942, the son of Adolf Dorfman, who was born in Odessa, a prominent Argentine professor of economics and the author of Historia de la Industria Argentina, and Fanny Zelicovich Dorfman, whose roots were Romanian-Moldovan Jews. Shortly after his birth, they moved to the United States and then, in 1954, moved to Chile. He attended and later worked as a professor at the University of Chile, marrying Angélica Malinarich in 1966 and becoming a Chilean citizen in 1967. From 1968 to 1969, he attended graduate school at the University of California at Berkeley and then returned to Chile.
His thesis on the absurd in plays of Harold Pinter was published in Spanish as El absurdo entre cuatro paredes: el teatro de Harold Pinter by Editorial Universitaria, in Santiago, Chile, in 1968 (124 pages). Pinter later became a personal friend as well as an influence on Dorfman's work and political thinking.
