In this most excellent London walk Joolz takes you from Waterloo through Southwark and towards Borough for a pint at The Lord Clyde pub.
We start on Waterloo Bridge and walk past Waterloo Station.
Then it's through the Leake Street tunnel to see all the graffiti. Also the father of the music halls "Canterbury Music hall" and the old entrance to the Necropolis railway where you tool the death train.
Also included are The Old Vic theatre, Roupell Street, the first circus master and fire insurance plaques.
Then it's along the railway arches to The Ring pub and the sculpture which Charles Dickens passed on his way to work every day.
The last men to be hanged in Britain for homosexuality and also the very cute, interesting Kirkaldy Testing Museum.

The district of Southwark lies just south of the Thames, making up a part of its namesake, the London Borough of Southwark.
It is said to be the oldest part of South London owing to its proximity to London Bridge, which was one of the only river crossings for many centuries since the first version was built in Roman times.
Southwark's name dates back as early as the 10th century where it was recorded as 'Suthriganaweorc' or 'Suthringa geweorche', meaning 'fort of the men of Surrey'.
One of the main landmarks in the area is Southwark Cathedral. With a history going back to 1106 AD when it was used as a priory by the Normans, it attained cathedral status much later - in 1905 after much restoration work had been carried out.
The other instantly recognisable landmark is, of course, The Shard. Built between 2009 and 2012 it overtook One Canada Square in Canary Wharf as the tallest building in the UK. On completion it was actually the tallest in all of Europe, although the Russians have since completed five even bigger buildings at the time of writing!
Towards the end of the walk we see the Golden Hinde - a full-size replica of the Golden Hind galleon that was used in the 16th century by Francis Drake to circumnavigate the world. Just down the road we see Winchester Palace - the ruin of a 12th century palace used by the Bishops of Winchester. Finally we end up outside the Clink Prison Museum dedicated to The Clink - the notorious prison that operated here from the 12th to 18th century.

Southwark Park
Southwark Park is located in Rotherhithe, in central South East London, and is managed by the London Borough of Southwark. It first opened in 1869 by the Metropolitan Board of Works as one of its first parks. It was designed by Alexander McKenzie and covers 63 acres (250,000 m2). It takes its name from being in what was the old Parliamentary constituency of Southwark at the time of its opening.
It received £2.5 million from the National Lottery's Heritage Lottery Fund in 1998 which enabled large parts of the park to be refurbished.
Facilities
The bandstand dates from 1884 and was originally sited in the Royal Horticultural Society grounds at South Kensington. It has a sister in Peckham Rye Park.
The Old English Cottage Garden was designed by Col. J.J. Sexby, Parks Superintendent for the London County Council. The idea for the rose garden came from Dr Alfred Salter, Member of Parliament for West Bermondsey. It was opened in 1936 and was named after Ada Salter when she died in 1943.

Southwark (/ˈsʌðərk/ SUDH-ərk) is a district of Central London and part of the London Borough of Southwark. Situated 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Charing Cross, it forms one of the oldest parts of London and fronts the River Thames to the north. It historically formed an ancient borough in the county of Surrey, made up of a number of parishes, which increasingly came under the influence and jurisdiction of the City of London. As an inner district of London, Southwark experienced rapid depopulation during the late 19th and early-20th centuries. It is now at an advanced stage of regeneration and is the location of the City Hall offices of the Greater London Authority. Southwark had a population of 30,119 in 2011.

Toponymy
The name Suthriganaweorc or Suthringa geweorche is recorded for the area in the 10th century Anglo-Saxon document known as the Burghal Hidage and means "fort of the men of Surrey" or "the defensive work of the men of Surrey". Southwark is recorded in the 1086 Domesday Book as Sudweca. The name means "southern defensive work" and is formed from the Old English sūth and weorc. The southern location is in reference to the City of London to the north, Southwark being at the southern end of London Bridge. Until 1889, the county of Surrey included the present-day London borough of Southwark, yet the name has been used for various areas of civil administration, including the ancient Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark and the current London Borough of Southwark. The ancient borough of Southwark was also known simply as The Borough—or Borough—and this name, in distinction from 'The City', has persisted as an alternative name for the area. Southwark was also simultaneously referred to as the Ward of Bridge Without when administered by the City (from 1550 to 1900) and as an Aldermanry until 1978.

London Borough of Southwark
The London Borough of Southwark 
i/ˈsʌðərk/ in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was created in 1965 when three smaller council areas amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. All districts of the area are within the London postal district. It is governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
That part of the South Bank within the borough is home to London Bridge terminus station and the attractions of The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the largest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery and the Imperial War Museum is in Elephant and Castle.
History
The area was first settled in the Roman period but the name Southwark dates from the 9th century. The London Borough of Southwark was formed in 1965 from the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey.

Waterloo to Southwark - Most Excellent London History Walk
In this most excellent London walk Joolz takes you from Waterloo through Southwark and towards Borough for a pint at The Lord Clyde pub. We start on Waterloo Bridge and walk past Waterloo Station. Then it's through the Leake Street tunnel to see all the graffiti. Also the father of the music halls "Canterbury Music hall" and the old entrance to the Necropolis railway where you tool the death train. Also included are The Old Vic theatre, Roupell Street, the first circus master and fire insurance plaques. In this most excellent London walk Joolz takes you from Waterloo through Southwark and towards Borough for a pint at The Lord Clyde pub.
We start on Waterloo Bridge and walk past Waterloo Station.
Then it's through the Leake Street tunnel to see all the graffiti. Also the father of the music halls "Canterbury Music hall" and the old entrance to the Necropolis railway where you tool the death train.
Also included are The Old Vic theatre, Roupell Street, the first circus master and fire insurance plaques.
Then it's along the railway arches to The Ring pub and the sculpture which Charles Dickens passed on his way to work every day.
The last men to be hanged in Britain for homosexuality and also the very cute, interesting Kirkaldy Testing Museum.

The district of Southwark lies just south of the Thames, making up a part of its namesake, the London Borough of Southwark.
It is said to be the oldest part of South London owing to its proximity to London Bridge, which was one of the only river crossings for many centuries since the first version was built in Roman times.
Southwark's name dates back as early as the 10th century where it was recorded as 'Suthriganaweorc' or 'Suthringa geweorche', meaning 'fort of the men of Surrey'.
One of the main landmarks in the area is Southwark Cathedral. With a history going back to 1106 AD when it was used as a priory by the Normans, it attained cathedral status much later - in 1905 after much restoration work had been carried out.
The other instantly recognisable landmark is, of course, The Shard. Built between 2009 and 2012 it overtook One Canada Square in Canary Wharf as the tallest building in the UK. On completion it was actually the tallest in all of Europe, although the Russians have since completed five even bigger buildings at the time of writing!
Towards the end of the walk we see the Golden Hinde - a full-size replica of the Golden Hind galleon that was used in the 16th century by Francis Drake to circumnavigate the world. Just down the road we see Winchester Palace - the ruin of a 12th century palace used by the Bishops of Winchester. Finally we end up outside the Clink Prison Museum dedicated to The Clink - the notorious prison that operated here from the 12th to 18th century.

In this most excellent London walk Joolz takes you from Waterloo through Southwark and towards Borough for a pint at The Lord Clyde pub.
We start on Waterloo Bridge and walk past Waterloo Station.
Then it's through the Leake Street tunnel to see all the graffiti. Also the father of the music halls "Canterbury Music hall" and the old entrance to the Necropolis railway where you tool the death train.
Also included are The Old Vic theatre, Roupell Street, the first circus master and fire insurance plaques.
Then it's along the railway arches to The Ring pub and the sculpture which Charles Dickens passed on his way to work every day.
The last men to be hanged in Britain for homosexuality and also the very cute, interesting Kirkaldy Testing Museum.

The district of Southwark lies just south of the Thames, making up a part of its namesake, the London Borough of Southwark.
It is said to be the oldest part of South London owing to its proximity to London Bridge, which was one of the only river crossings for many centuries since the first version was built in Roman times.
Southwark's name dates back as early as the 10th century where it was recorded as 'Suthriganaweorc' or 'Suthringa geweorche', meaning 'fort of the men of Surrey'.
One of the main landmarks in the area is Southwark Cathedral. With a history going back to 1106 AD when it was used as a priory by the Normans, it attained cathedral status much later - in 1905 after much restoration work had been carried out.
The other instantly recognisable landmark is, of course, The Shard. Built between 2009 and 2012 it overtook One Canada Square in Canary Wharf as the tallest building in the UK. On completion it was actually the tallest in all of Europe, although the Russians have since completed five even bigger buildings at the time of writing!
Towards the end of the walk we see the Golden Hinde - a full-size replica of the Golden Hind galleon that was used in the 16th century by Francis Drake to circumnavigate the world. Just down the road we see Winchester Palace - the ruin of a 12th century palace used by the Bishops of Winchester. Finally we end up outside the Clink Prison Museum dedicated to The Clink - the notorious prison that operated here from the 12th to 18th century.

Southwark Park
Southwark Park is located in Rotherhithe, in central South East London, and is managed by the London Borough of Southwark. It first opened in 1869 by the Metropolitan Board of Works as one of its first parks. It was designed by Alexander McKenzie and covers 63 acres (250,000 m2). It takes its name from being in what was the old Parliamentary constituency of Southwark at the time of its opening.
It received £2.5 million from the National Lottery's Heritage Lottery Fund in 1998 which enabled large parts of the park to be refurbished.
Facilities
The bandstand dates from 1884 and was originally sited in the Royal Horticultural Society grounds at South Kensington. It has a sister in Peckham Rye Park.
The Old English Cottage Garden was designed by Col. J.J. Sexby, Parks Superintendent for the London County Council. The idea for the rose garden came from Dr Alfred Salter, Member of Parliament for West Bermondsey. It was opened in 1936 and was named after Ada Salter when she died in 1943.
