A 4 foot magnifying glass is powerful enough to melt metal, incinerate wood, and burn holes in concrete.
Putting that statement to the test with various items was the purpose of this project. I'm impressed at the results, and excited at the power available through this Fresnel lens that I've nicknamed my "Solar Scorcher".
In the summer, the sunlight at this spot is around 2000ºF, maybe more. Enough to melt spots of concrete into glowing orange liquid.
I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies? Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these.

This one boiled water in less than a minute, welded a nickel to concrete, and instantly torched any piece of wood in it's way.

Verengo Solar (http://bit.ly/LPSolarSpecials) sent me some solar panels so I could get my feet wet with using energy from the sun. I tried a bunch of experiments, which you'll see in the project video. One of my favorites was hooking up my hydrogen generator, from a previous project, and generating this "earth friendly" fuel with renewable energy.
I've always wanted to hook my hydrogen generator to solar panels and see what happened, so that was the first order of business :)
I expected that gas production would be low, but was surprised to even get around 1 liter every 5 minutes. Imagine if you ran the generator all day. You could collect copious amounts of the fuel and it wouldn't cost a penny. Perhaps 100 liters for 8 hours of sunlight? That blows my mind .. and my ear drums.
The fuel is made by electrically splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen gasses (2H20 = 2H2 + O2)
This gas is perfectly balanced for a powerful reaction, and when ignited, turns back into water. There are no by-products that are harmful to the environment. The process can be repeated over and over, and the gas is very powerful.
Rather than using a charge controller to charge a battery bank, I wanted to see if I could hook the panels directly to a cheap inverter to power devices on the fly. It seemed work just fine for charging my phone, but I did have to hook the inverter to a car battery to get it to power anything more substantial, like the battery charger for my cordless drill.
It really surprised me to see the juicy electrical arcs between the terminals. I wasn’t expecting to see a sustained plasma arc just from 2 panels in parallel. I’m still not exactly sure how it did that with such low voltage, but it was really cool to witness.
Overall, I’m a lot more interested in solar power now that I’ve been able to play with it a bit. I can see the value in it, and now that my feet are wet, I’m a lot less apprehensive about getting deeper into it in future projects.

These TV's are old, extremely heavy, and are breaking down on people everywhere. They usually cost more to fix than they could be sold for, so people are begging you to come take them away for free!
I usually find mine on the classified adds under the "free" section, but they are also common on the sides of streets and alleyways where people have left them for trash.
PLEASE NOTE: These lenses are found in "rear-projection" televisions and not all are the same. Some are discolored, and some concentrate to a beam rather than a point. The particular screen I found was a crystal clear acrylic lens that focused to a point. It may have been luck that I found it on my first try, because 3 TV's after that all had lesser grade lenses, but still produced enough heat to melt zinc. Just FYI! For this demonstration, I used the "Solar Scorcher" made in a previous project (https://goo.gl/lbDdce
) to focus concentrated sunlight on a glass bottle of soda.
I used dark soda because it absorbs the energy faster.
I realized the pressure would rise quickly in the bottle, and I made sure I was at least 30 feet away during the demonstration, for safety.
My guess was that the bottle top would shoot off at high speed. But what actually happened took me by surprise, and took me 2 days to clean up the yard.

Randomness
Randomness is the lack of pattern or predictability in events. A random sequence of events, symbols or steps has no order and does not follow an intelligible pattern or combination. Solar power
Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP). Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaics convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect.
The International Energy Agency projected in 2014 that under its "high renewables" scenario, by 2050, solar photovoltaics and concentrated solar power would contribute about 16 and 11 percent, respectively, of the worldwide electricity consumption, and solar would be the world's largest source of electricity. Most solar installations would be in China and India.
Photovoltaics were initially solely used as a source of electricity for small and medium-sized applications, from the calculator powered by a single solar cell to remote homes powered by an off-grid rooftop PV system. As the cost of solar electricity has fallen, the number of grid-connected solar PV systems has grown into the millions and utility-scale solar power stations with hundreds of megawatts are being built. Putting that statement to the test with various items was the purpose of this project. I'm impressed at the results, and excited at the power available through this Fresnel lens that I've nicknamed my "Solar Scorcher". In the summer, the sunlight at this spot is around 2000ºF, maybe more. Enough to melt spots of concrete into glowing orange liquid. I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies? Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these. Well, I'm convinced there's an insane amount of power behind these lenses. Project History & More Info: Verengo Solar (http://bit.ly/LPSolarSpecials) sent me some solar panels so I could get my feet wet with using energy from the sun. I tried a bunch of experiments, which you'll see in the project video. One of my favorites was hooking up my hydrogen generator, from a previous project, and generating this "earth friendly" fuel with renewable energy. I've always wanted to hook my hydrogen generator to solar panels and see what happened, so that was the first order of business :) I expected that gas production would be low, but was surprised to even get around 1 liter every 5 minutes. Imagine if you ran the generator all day. You could collect copious amounts of the fuel and it wouldn't cost a penny. Perhaps 100 liters for 8 hours of sunlight? That blows my mind .. and my ear drums. The fuel is made by electrically splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen gasses (2H20 = 2H2 + O2) This gas is perfectly balanced for a powerful reaction, and when ignited, turns back into water. There are no by-products that are harmful to the environment. The process can be repeated over and over, and the gas is very powerful. Rather than using a charge controller to charge a battery bank, I wanted to see if I could hook the panels directly to a cheap inverter to power devices on the fly. It seemed work just fine for charging my phone, but I did have to hook the inverter to a car battery to get it to power anything more substantial, like the battery charger for my cordless drill. It really surprised me to see the juicy electrical arcs between the terminals. I wasn’t expecting to see a sustained plasma arc just from 2 panels in parallel. I’m still not exactly sure how it did that with such low voltage, but it was really cool to witness. Overall, I’m a lot more interested in solar power now that I’ve been able to play with it a bit. I can see the value in it, and now that my feet are wet, I’m a lot less apprehensive about getting deeper into it in future projects. -

They usually cost more to fix than they could be sold for, so people are begging you to come take them away for free! I usually find mine on the classified adds under the "free" section, but they are also common on the sides of streets and alleyways where people have left them for trash. PLEASE NOTE: These lenses are found in "rear-projection" televisions and not all are the same. Some are discolored, and some concentrate to a beam rather than a point. The particular screen I found was a crystal clear acrylic lens that focused to a point. It may have been luck that I found it on my first try, because 3 TV's after that all had lesser grade lenses, but still produced enough heat to melt zinc. Just FYI! A 4 foot magnifying glass is powerful enough to melt metal, incinerate wood, and burn holes in concrete.
Putting that statement to the test with various items was the purpose of this project. I'm impressed at the results, and excited at the power available through this Fresnel lens that I've nicknamed my "Solar Scorcher".
In the summer, the sunlight at this spot is around 2000ºF, maybe more. Enough to melt spots of concrete into glowing orange liquid.
I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies? Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these.

Verengo Solar (http://bit.ly/LPSolarSpecials) sent me some solar panels so I could get my feet wet with using energy from the sun. I tried a bunch of experiments, which you'll see in the project video. One of my favorites was hooking up my hydrogen generator, from a previous project, and generating this "earth friendly" fuel with renewable energy.
I've always wanted to hook my hydrogen generator to solar panels and see what happened, so that was the first order of business :)
I expected that gas production would be low, but was surprised to even get around 1 liter every 5 minutes. Imagine if you ran the generator all day. You could collect copious amounts of the fuel and it wouldn't cost a penny. Perhaps 100 liters for 8 hours of sunlight? That blows my mind .. and my ear drums.
The fuel is made by electrically splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen gasses (2H20 = 2H2 + O2)
This gas is perfectly balanced for a powerful reaction, and when ignited, turns back into water. There are no by-products that are harmful to the environment. The process can be repeated over and over, and the gas is very powerful.
Rather than using a charge controller to charge a battery bank, I wanted to see if I could hook the panels directly to a cheap inverter to power devices on the fly. It seemed work just fine for charging my phone, but I did have to hook the inverter to a car battery to get it to power anything more substantial, like the battery charger for my cordless drill.
It really surprised me to see the juicy electrical arcs between the terminals. I wasn’t expecting to see a sustained plasma arc just from 2 panels in parallel. I’m still not exactly sure how it did that with such low voltage, but it was really cool to witness.
Overall, I’m a lot more interested in solar power now that I’ve been able to play with it a bit. I can see the value in it, and now that my feet are wet, I’m a lot less apprehensive about getting deeper into it in future projects.

These TV's are old, extremely heavy, and are breaking down on people everywhere. They usually cost more to fix than they could be sold for, so people are begging you to come take them away for free!
I usually find mine on the classified adds under the "free" section, but they are also common on the sides of streets and alleyways where people have left them for trash.
PLEASE NOTE: These lenses are found in "rear-projection" televisions and not all are the same. Some are discolored, and some concentrate to a beam rather than a point. The particular screen I found was a crystal clear acrylic lens that focused to a point. It may have been luck that I found it on my first try, because 3 TV's after that all had lesser grade lenses, but still produced enough heat to melt zinc. Just FYI! These TV's are old, extremely heavy, and are breaking down on people everywhere. They usually cost more to fix than they could be sold for, so people are begging you to come take them away for free!
I usually find mine on the classified adds under the "free" section, but they are also common on the sides of streets and alleyways where people have left them for trash.
PLEASE NOTE: These lenses are found in "rear-projection" televisions and not all are the same. Some are discolored, and some concentrate to a beam rather than a point. The particular screen I found was a crystal clear acrylic lens that focused to a point. It may have been luck that I found it on my first try, because 3 TV's after that all had lesser grade lenses, but still produced enough heat to melt zinc. Just FYI! For this demonstration, I used the "Solar Scorcher" made in a previous project (https://goo.gl/lbDdce
) to focus concentrated sunlight on a glass bottle of soda.
I used dark soda because it absorbs the energy faster.
I realized the pressure would rise quickly in the bottle, and I made sure I was at least 30 feet away during the demonstration, for safety.
My guess was that the bottle top would shoot off at high speed. But what actually happened took me by surprise, and took me 2 days to clean up the yard.

I tried a bunch of experiments, which you'll see in the project video. One of my favorites was hooking up my hydrogen generator, from a previous project, and generating this "earth friendly" fuel with renewable energy.
I'm always interested in ways to give back where I can, and for over a year I've wanted to have some fun giving away random prizes. Finally I'm in a position where I think we can make this happen!
My goal is to be able to do this once a week, or perhaps even more.
These videos are made to be supplemental, and shouldn't take away from regular project videos or quick clips. Instead, they are bonus videos simply made to recognize and give back to you, my loyal supporters.

A 4 foot magnifying glass is powerful enough to melt metal, incinerate wood, and burn holes in concrete.
Putting that statement to the test with various items was the purpose of this project. I'm impressed at the results, and excited at the power available through this Fresnel lens that I've nicknamed my "Solar Scorcher".
In the summer, the sunlight at this spot is around 2000ºF, maybe more. Enough to melt spots of concrete into glowing orange liquid.
I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies? Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these.
Well, I'm convinced there's an insane amount of power behind these lenses. If you'd like to see where I got this one, take a look at my video on how I hacked it out of an old TV.

Putting that statement to the test with various items was the purpose of this project. I'm impressed at the results, and excited at the power available through this Fresnel lens that I've nicknamed my "Solar Scorcher".
In the summer, the sunlight at this spot is around 2000ºF, maybe more. Enough to melt spots of concrete into glowing orange liquid.
I'm curious to see what I can do with all this heat so I've filled a glass bottle with water and I'll punch a hole in the cap. It's incredible to see that the instant I focus my lens on the bottle, it starts smoking. Just a few moments later this water is so hot it's boiling, and I'm a little nervous the bottle might blow. Yep, there it goes. I'll try burning a penny, and, wow, it melted. How about a stack of pennies? Yep, they're nothing but liquid metal now, and I'm thinking that slag in the mixture must be what's left of the copper coating. It's only taking about 4 seconds to melt these.

This one boiled water in less than a minute, welded a nickel to concrete, and instantly torched any piece of wood in it's way.

Verengo Solar (http://bit.ly/LPSolarSpecials) sent me some solar panels so I could get my feet wet with using energy from the sun. I tried a bunch of experiments, which you'll see in the project video. One of my favorites was hooking up my hydrogen generator, from a previous project, and generating this "earth friendly" fuel with renewable energy.
I've always wanted to hook my hydrogen generator to solar panels and see what happened, so that was the first order of business :)
I expected that gas production would be low, but was surprised to even get around 1 liter every 5 minutes. Imagine if you ran the generator all day. You could collect copious amounts of the fuel and it wouldn't cost a penny. Perhaps 100 liters for 8 hours of sunlight? That blows my mind .. and my ear drums.
The fuel is made by electrically splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen gasses (2H20 = 2H2 + O2)
This gas is perfectly balanced for a powerful reaction, and when ignited, turns back into water. There are no by-products that are harmful to the environment. The process can be repeated over and over, and the gas is very powerful.
Rather than using a charge controller to charge a battery bank, I wanted to see if I could hook the panels directly to a cheap inverter to power devices on the fly. It seemed work just fine for charging my phone, but I did have to hook the inverter to a car battery to get it to power anything more substantial, like the battery charger for my cordless drill.
It really surprised me to see the juicy electrical arcs between the terminals. I wasn’t expecting to see a sustained plasma arc just from 2 panels in parallel. I’m still not exactly sure how it did that with such low voltage, but it was really cool to witness.
Overall, I’m a lot more interested in solar power now that I’ve been able to play with it a bit. I can see the value in it, and now that my feet are wet, I’m a lot less apprehensive about getting deeper into it in future projects.

These TV's are old, extremely heavy, and are breaking down on people everywhere. They usually cost more to fix than they could be sold for, so people are begging you to come take them away for free!
I usually find mine on the classified adds under the "free" section, but they are also common on the sides of streets and alleyways where people have left them for trash.
PLEASE NOTE: These lenses are found in "rear-projection" televisions and not all are the same. Some are discolored, and some concentrate to a beam rather than a point. The particular screen I found was a crystal clear acrylic lens that focused to a point. It may have been luck that I found it on my first try, because 3 TV's after that all had lesser grade lenses, but still produced enough heat to melt zinc. Just FYI! This was an original idea. Original to me anyway.

Concentrated solar energy can reach temperatures in excess of 2000ºF, and produce UV radiation that could damage eyes. Glass bottles should not be exposed to these extreme heat/pressure conditions as they pose risk of serious cuts and injury upon failure of the container.

For this demonstration, I used the "Solar Scorcher" made in a previous project (https://goo.gl/lbDdce
) to focus concentrated sunlight on a glass bottle of soda.
I used dark soda because it absorbs the energy faster.
I realized the pressure would rise quickly in the bottle, and I made sure I was at least 30 feet away during the demonstration, for safety.

This was an original idea. Original to me anyway.
WARNING: This video is for demonstrational, educational, and entertainment purposes only, and is not intended to be duplicated. Concentrated solar energy can reach temperatures in excess of 2000ºF, and produce UV radiation that could damage eyes. Glass bottles should not be exposed to these extreme heat/pressure conditions as they pose risk of serious cuts and injury upon failure of the container.
Project History & More Info:
For this demonstration, I used the "Solar Scorcher" made in a previous project (https://goo.gl/lbDdce
) to focus concentrated sunlight on a glass bottle of soda.
I used dark soda because it absorbs the energy faster.
I realized the pressure would rise quickly in the bottle, and I made sure I was at least 30 feet away during the demonstration, for safety.
My guess was that the bottle top would shoot off at high speed. But what actually happened took me by surprise, and took me 2 days to clean up the yard.

I tried a bunch of experiments, which you'll see in the project video. One of my favorites was hooking up my hydrogen generator, from a previous project, and generating this "earth friendly" fuel with renewable energy.
I'm always interested in ways to give back where I can, and for over a year I've wanted to have some fun giving away random prizes. Finally I'm in a position where I think we can make this happen!
My goal is to be able to do this once a week, or perhaps even more.
These videos are made to be supplemental, and shouldn't take away from regular project videos or quick clips. Instead, they are bonus videos simply made to recognize and give back to you, my loyal supporters.

Layers of rocks at the base of Mount Sharp accumulated as sediment within ancient lakes around 3.5 billion years ago.
