Trail angels have become an integral presence along the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) and other long distance hiking trails across the country. In general, trail angels perform random acts of kindness and assistance (often referred to as trail magic) to thru-hikers along remote stretches of trail where access to water and other amenities are limited or non existent.
The trail magic they perform often occurs unexpectedly and without warning in the form of fresh water, food, shelter, or a car ride to the nearest town. They know how important it is for thru-hikers to complete the trail in its entirety. Therefore, they understand the hardships of hiking a long distance trail and often appear when a thru-hiker needs help or encouragement the most.
For the past ten years, Apple has been setting up a large tent equipped with a wood burning stove in a remote corner of Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. By mid November, southbound thru-hikers, who started their journey on top of the 5,268 foot peak of Mount Katahdin in Maine, will have walked about 2,000 miles by the time they reach Apple’s shelter just 111 miles from the southern terminus located in northern Georgia. As if appearing out of nowhere, Apple’s shelter offers a brief respite for thru-hikers before they forge ahead to reach the summit of Springer Mountain in Georgia.
For one week in November, White Blaze follows Apple as he supports weary southbound thru-hikers along the Appalachian Trail by offering them food, water, and encouragement to reach the end of the famous 2,178 mile wooded footpath. White Blaze examines the brief encounters experienced between thru-hikers and one trail angel.

that crappy old mower i got from my neighbor didn't have a spark plug in it so the motor is toast. but its just what i needed. the motor still turns and i needed another lawnmower piston for my Stirling Engine project. now i have a 2 pistons (that i hope are the same size) and all i have to do is build the cylinders to start working on the engine.
not counting it may have a working magneto, thats just what my 1940s Briggs and Stratton 5s engine needs!
also the idea of charging my welding batteries inside my workbench sparked an idea for my 1960s petrol pump to e-charger conversion.

We got to ride on Valentines morning February 14th. We all have wives and a girlfriend, so I thank them for this day. Have you ever had one of those days where everything comes together and clicks nicely? I really enjoyed myself this fine day. The weather could not have been more accommodating and the trails were just shy of perfect. Our choice of ride was Brail Trail in Soquel Demonstration Forest, a prime spot for mountain biking.
When I rolled open the gate that morning to my driveway I saw my buddy and his brother, he had a cup of coffee and warm bagel waiting for me. Little did I know this was the beginning of an epic ride day? Between the coffee, filming video and riding with friends I was on a natural high. To top it off my buddy Jose wanted to switch bikes, I have a Giant Trance 27.5" and his was a Specialized 13' Stumpjumper 29er. That bike is so much more nimble and agile than the trance.
There are three popular rides in Demo for me, the longest and my favorite is Saw Pit, Brail trial and then Flow trail. The easiest of three is Flow, it’s beginner friendly for the most part but you can get crazy and fly off the trail if your not paying attention. Brail has the most features likes good size jumps, steep rutty descents but mostly jumps with steep descents.
Saw Pit offers the longest route of technical single track, overall not being too steep except for a couple of short rocky and deep rutted sections. I love this trail for it’s technicality, the length and it’s flow that allows you to hammer as hard as you want. Saw Pit being the longest of the three, it does leave you with about a four mile fire road climb out.Just a quarter mile more than The Flow Trail. It’s steady and not to steep, very gradual. You are climbing in about 3-4 miles and climbing out, so keep that in mind.

Midday Wednesday, a team of synchronized skywriters will encircle the Bay Area's airspace with what, to most viewers, will appear a random string of rapidly fading digits. A select few, however, will recognize it as pi: 3.14159, and so forth a thousand places.
Artist ISHKY devised Pi in the Sky for the Zero1 Biennial, which kicks off today in San Jose. Titled "Seeking Silicon Valley," the biennial includes a centralized exhibition as well as various public art projects that aim to bring the elusive nature of the valley into focus.
For instance, working on a more down-to-earth scale, San Francisco-based architect Christopher Haas and design studio Rebar teamed up to create Sky-Fi -- a canopy of circuitry fibers above downtown San Jose's SoFA district that will carry pulses of light, metaphorically instantiating the "information superhighway" in physical space.
ISHKY intends to trace the Valley's reaches in a broader sense: the planes will fly a determined course over Apple, Facebook and Twitter headquarters, The Financial District of San Francisco, Stanford, UC Berkeley and Livermore labs, among other major tech nodes.
With each digit extending a quarter mile in height, Pi in the Sky will be the largest ephemeral art installation to date. And ISHKY isn't stopping there: part 2 involves launching a satellite into space to orbit the earth, transmitting a constant stream of Pi back down (for more on that, check out ISHKY's website).

At the request of a California-born artist known as Ishky, artists, programmers and scientists teamed up to bring the Bay Area the unique visual experience of seeing all the numbers of Pi, the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, written in the clouds.
According to the Ishky's website, "five synchronized aircraft equipped with dot-matrix technology will skywrite the first 1,000 numbers of Pi's infinite sequence" at 10,000 feet altitude today. The planes will loop around the Bay Area, and each number will be over a quarter-mile in height.
Set to begin above the ZERO1 Garage in San Jose at 11:45 a.m. and then again at 1:30 p.m.
According to the website:
"Within moments of execution (3.14159265...), the specific meaning of the numbers in the sky will be lost. The piece will dissolve into an unprecedented visual anomaly that prompts curiosity, providing rich opportunity for social interaction."

Randomness has somewhat differing meanings as used in various fields. It also has common meanings which are connected to the notion of predictability (or lack thereof) of events.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines 'random' as "Having no definite aim or purpose; not sent or guided in a particular direction; made, done, occurring, etc., without method or conscious choice; haphazard." This concept of randomness suggests a non-order or non-coherence in a sequence of symbols or steps, such that there is no intelligible pattern or combination.
Applied usage in science, mathematics and statistics recognizes a lack of predictability when referring to randomness, but admits regularities in the occurrences of events whose outcomes are not certain. For example, when throwing 2 dice and counting the total, we can say 7 will randomly occur twice as often as 4. This view, where randomness simply refers to situations in which the certainty of the outcome is at issue, is the one taken when referring to concepts of chance, probability, and information entropy. In these situations randomness implies a measure of uncertainty and notions of haphazardness are irrelevant.

lot of stuff happens in 1 day. that crappy old mower i got from my neighbor didn't have a spark plug in it so the motor is toast. but its just what i needed. the motor still turns and i needed another lawnmower piston for my Stirling Engine project. now i have a 2 pistons (that i hope are the same size) and all i have to do is build the cylinders to start working on the engine. not counting it may have a working magneto, thats just what my 1940s Briggs and Stratton 5s engine needs! also the idea of charging my welding batteries inside my workbench sparked an idea for my 1960s petrol pump to e-charger conversion. -

Have you ever had one of those days where everything comes together and clicks nicely? I really enjoyed myself this fine day. The weather could not have been more accommodating and the trails were just shy of perfect. Our choice of ride was Brail Trail in Soquel Demonstration Forest, a prime spot for mountain biking. When I rolled open the gate that morning to my driveway I saw my buddy and his brother, he had a cup of coffee and warm bagel waiting for me. In general, trail angels perform random acts of kindness and assistance (often referred to as trail magic) to thru-hikers along remote stretches of trail where access to water and other amenities are limited or non existent.
The trail magic they perform often occurs unexpectedly and without warning in the form of fresh water, food, shelter, or a car ride to the nearest town. They know how important it is for thru-hikers to complete the trail in its entirety. Therefore, they understand the hardships of hiking a long distance trail and often appear when a thru-hiker needs help or encouragement the most.
For the past ten years, Apple has been setting up a large tent equipped with a wood burning stove in a remote corner of Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. By mid November, southbound thru-hikers, who started their journey on top of the 5,268 foot peak of Mount Katahdin in Maine, will have walked about 2,000 miles by the time they reach Apple’s shelter just 111 miles from the southern terminus located in northern Georgia. As if appearing out of nowhere, Apple’s shelter offers a brief respite for thru-hikers before they forge ahead to reach the summit of Springer Mountain in Georgia.
For one week in November, White Blaze follows Apple as he supports weary southbound thru-hikers along the Appalachian Trail by offering them food, water, and encouragement to reach the end of the famous 2,178 mile wooded footpath. White Blaze examines the brief encounters experienced between thru-hikers and one trail angel.

Have you ever had one of those days where everything comes together and clicks nicely? I really enjoyed myself this fine day. The weather could not have been more accommodating and the trails were just shy of perfect. Our choice of ride was Brail Trail in Soquel Demonstration Forest, a prime spot for mountain biking.
When I rolled open the gate that morning to my driveway I saw my buddy and his brother, he had a cup of coffee and warm bagel waiting for me. Little did I know this was the beginning of an epic ride day? Between the coffee, filming video and riding with friends I was on a natural high. To top it off my buddy Jose wanted to switch bikes, I have a Giant Trance 27.5" and his was a Specialized 13' Stumpjumper 29er. That bike is so much more nimble and agile than the trance.
There are three popular rides in Demo for me, the longest and my favorite is Saw Pit, Brail trial and then Flow trail. The easiest of three is Flow, it’s beginner friendly for the most part but you can get crazy and fly off the trail if your not paying attention. Brail has the most features likes good size jumps, steep rutty descents but mostly jumps with steep descents.
Saw Pit offers the longest route of technical single track, overall not being too steep except for a couple of short rocky and deep rutted sections. I love this trail for it’s technicality, the length and it’s flow that allows you to hammer as hard as you want. Saw Pit being the longest of the three, it does leave you with about a four mile fire road climb out.Just a quarter mile more than The Flow Trail. It’s steady and not to steep, very gradual. You are climbing in about 3-4 miles and climbing out, so keep that in mind.

Artist ISHKY devised Pi in the Sky for the Zero1 Biennial, which kicks off today in San Jose. Titled "Seeking Silicon Valley," the biennial includes a centralized exhibition as well as various public art projects that aim to bring the elusive nature of the valley into focus.
For instance, working on a more down-to-earth scale, San Francisco-based architect Christopher Haas and design studio Rebar teamed up to create Sky-Fi -- a canopy of circuitry fibers above downtown San Jose's SoFA district that will carry pulses of light, metaphorically instantiating the "information superhighway" in physical space.
ISHKY intends to trace the Valley's reaches in a broader sense: the planes will fly a determined course over Apple, Facebook and Twitter headquarters, The Financial District of San Francisco, Stanford, UC Berkeley and Livermore labs, among other major tech nodes.
With each digit extending a quarter mile in height, Pi in the Sky will be the largest ephemeral art installation to date. And ISHKY isn't stopping there: part 2 involves launching a satellite into space to orbit the earth, transmitting a constant stream of Pi back down (for more on that, check out ISHKY's website).

According to the Ishky's website, "five synchronized aircraft equipped with dot-matrix technology will skywrite the first 1,000 numbers of Pi's infinite sequence" at 10,000 feet altitude today. The planes will loop around the Bay Area, and each number will be over a quarter-mile in height.
Set to begin above the ZERO1 Garage in San Jose at 11:45 a.m. and then again at 1:30 p.m.
According to the website:
"Within moments of execution (3.14159265...), the specific meaning of the numbers in the sky will be lost. The piece will dissolve into an unprecedented visual anomaly that prompts curiosity, providing rich opportunity for social interaction."

10 Day Appalachian Trail Ultralight Gear Setup
Hi Guys in this video I will go over my 10 day gear setup for the upcoming Appalachian Trail Section Hike of Georgia. The Georgia section is 78.5 miles. This is a leisurely hike we only plan on doing about 8 miles a day our goal is to get out and enjoy the woods. My total pack weight is 26 lbs Not exactly ultralight but I do not feel as though I'm making any sacrifices. 8.8lbs of that is food and water which gives me a base weight of 17.2 lbs I like to have it down to 15 lbs however on this trip with the forecast of wet weather 6 of the 10 days. I am bringing a change of clothes which adds a extra 23 oz. and a sleeping pad 12 oz. My cook kit choice for this trip is 14oz. BS 10 cm cook pot, BS 12oz. cup BS 2.0 FE stove, BS 1.1 ADJ. I cant find a link for the ratcheting crimper I use, I got it in a case for vintage motorcycle connectors.
This set-up only regulates the AC voltage put out by the Stator, it does not rectify it to DC.
I use a battery powered bicycle light for the tail light (rear red light is all that's required in my state for a Moped which is how this is registered) - Which I prefer as if the engine stops, I lose power and the headlight. This way I still have a rear light so hopefully I don't get hit if I stall it on the road.
The low beam is plenty bright enough. The high beam that has both lights on seems to be too much for the Stator (90 Watt output, light is 70 Watts on high) as it reduces the brightness of the low light too. I may have to switch to a DC Regulator/Rectifier so I'm not wasting power when the AC regulator shunts anything in excess of 13.8V to ground.
