The Witch review - original sin and folkloric terror

Edit The Guardian 13 Mar 2016
4 / 5 stars. Robert Eggers’s Sundance-garlanded period horror is a chilling study of fear and the devils that live within us all. @KermodeMovie ... The discordant strains of Mark Korven’s score, a superbly evocative symphony of nyckelharpa strings and eerie scrapes, give way to an image of prostrate prayer, as father William (Ralph Ineson) leads his brood in face-down worship on the outskirts of an imposing wood ... The Witch review: masterful old-school dread stalks the New World

Edit The Irish Times 10 Mar 2016
Robert Eggers’s singular debut can, without two much sanding of edges, be comfortably slotted into that fecund genre we know as folk horror ... The Witch may be set in North America, but it is 1630 and the accents are still those of northern Britain ... Kung Fu Panda 3 ... Her hands part and he’s smiling ... Mark Korven, a master out of Winnipeg, scores with screeches and moans that help the action build towards a final, borderline-absurd catharsis....

‘The Witch’ conjures 17th century America

Edit San Francisco Chronicle 26 Feb 2016
Call it artisanal horror, driven in part by the same impulses that have modern consumers hungering for old-fashioned food preparations based on a respect for handmade, small-batch craftsmanship ... Working with production designer Craig Lathrop, costume designer Linda Muir, cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, editor Louise Ford and composer Mark Korven, Eggers has created a boldly convincing version of New England farm life circa 1630 ... ....

'The Witch' is an unforgettable historical horror masterpiece

Edit The Examiner 26 Feb 2016
Robert Eggers’ The Witch is the type of horror film that I have been anxiously awaiting for quite some time. It is, simply put, one of the best films of the year - maybe even the decade. Perhaps the century. That is not hyperbole, it is merely the truth ... With all of their belongings in tow, they ride a covered wagon into the wilderness where they plan to start anew ... Also worthy of mention is the films score by composer, Mark Korven ... ....

In 'The Witch,' a haunting prequel to Salem

Edit The Malta Independent 26 Feb 2016
Set under gray Puritan skies in a deathly autumn, "The Witch" is a slow-burning 1600s horror thriller so bone-dry it would only take a match for the whole movie to go up in flames. "A New England folktale" is how the opening titles describe writer-director Robert Eggers' impressively rigorous feature debut ... Do not expect broomsticks ... The picture is drained of color and the score (by Mark Korven) is eerie and discordant ... a teenager ... ....

‘The Witch’ Review: A beautiful descent into madness

Edit Celebrity Café 21 Feb 2016
The score by Mark Korven plays a vital part in building the tension as well, and it may go down as one of the greatest horror scores of all time, assuming Korven himself actually composed it and didn’t simply recover a CD from the depths of hell ... the two hour mark but it says a lot about The Witch that the main issue is we’re left wanting more....

'The Witch': Eerie horror film follows pious New Englanders into the woods

Edit Philadelphia Daily News 19 Feb 2016
The Witch is a stressful movie to watch, and that's meant as the highest praise. It's eerie in every sense, from its isolated 17th-century New England setting to its washed-out colors to the face of its star, Anya Taylor-Joy ... Or is that force created by the sins of the family itself? ... Jarin Blaschke's cinematography, the score by Mark Korven, Eggers' direction and script (culled from New England lore), and the small, phenomenal cast ... ....

'The Witch' sets the bar very high for 2016 horror

Edit The Examiner 19 Feb 2016
Good luck to those horror films that open after “The Witch” which starts its run in theaters today, Friday, February 19, 2016. Whatever comes after it this year will have a lot to live up to following one of the best horror movies to come down the pike in years ... He creates such a complete world, that you're totally immersed in it ... Father is passive/aggressive ... Special kudos must be given to Mark Korven as well for his ultra-eerie score ... ....

Director cloaks 'The Witch' in period details to immerse cast and viewers

"The Witch" is a film that attempts not to simply mimic a world of primitive technology, superstition and beliefs, but rather to conjure it completely ... Working with production designer Craig Lathrop, costume designer Linda Muir, cinematographer Jarin Blaschke, editor Louise Ford and composer Mark Korven, Eggers has created a boldly convincing version of New England farm life circa 1630 ... 'The Witch' Conjures Up A Chilly, Must-See Tale Of Puritan Horrors

Edit Huffington Post 19 Feb 2016
Around this time last year, anyone monitoring the chatter pouring out of Sundance knew "The Witch" was the festival's primo sleeper. Its esteem happened organically, without any star power or pre-festival buzz ... "A star is born," the industry seemed to say of Eggers and his collective cast ... Even the film's score, by Mark Korven, is grounded in history, using period-appropriate instruments to repurpose a cappella Puritan psalms ...   ... ....

Movie review: ‘The Witch’ is a scary thrill

Edit The Oklahoman 18 Feb 2016
You might expect that a film titled “The Witch” is giving away the game from the start. How wrong you might be ... In his feature debut he plunges us into an eerie world both nightmarish and credible ... Wait no longer, Eggers has arrived ... “It will not consume us.” ... The dissonant musical soundtrack by composer Mark Korven and its gloomy natural lighting make each sequence electrify the imagination while maintaining an atmosphere of mystery ... ———....
