Much has been written about the impact adoption can have on the life of an unloved shelter pet — but words pale in comparison to seeing that unbridled joy first hand.
Up until recently, a sweet but shy dog named Benny had no idea what the future had in store for him, or how close he came to seeing his cut short. As a resident of the Carson Animal Care Center, a high-kill shelter in Gardena, California, all he could do was sit and wait for someone to come along and save him, which he did week after week with no success. But then that all changed.
Earlier this month, Benny was finally adopted by a loving family. His reaction upon realizing that happy fact? Priceless.

She was kept in a foster program and was five before a family adopted her
But they returned her after her guarding instincts suddenly resurfaced

Every year millions of "unwanted" pets in the United States are killed at animal shelters. Breeding, puppy mills and pet stores need to be stopped in favor of adoption and saving the lives of those beautiful, wonderful pets waiting in shelters...many are pure breeds that get dumped or taken from breeders, puppy mills or citizens that paid top dollar just to decide they "don't want" them later. Please be responsible with your pets and help save lives. Adopt don't buy from breeders, pet stores or any place that supports cruel puppy mill operations. Volunteer for shelters or animal rescues and network shelter animals through social media. Together we can make a positive difference.

An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost, or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats. In the past, such a shelter was more commonly referred to as a dog pound, a term which had its origins in the impoundments of agricultural communities, where stray cattle would be penned up or impounded until claimed by their owners.
The goal of the modern animal shelter is to provide a safe and caring environment until the animal is either reclaimed by its owner, placed in a new home, or placed with another organization for adoption.[citation needed] Many shelters temperament test animals before they are put up for adoption to determine if the animal is adoptable and if so what the appropriate home environment would be.
Some public animal shelters around the world euthanize animals that are not adopted within a set period of time (usually 7 to 14 days); others have a policy of only putting down animals that are in distress due to age or illness. Most private shelters are typically run as no-kill shelters.

Up until recently, a sweet but shy dog named Benny had no idea what the future had in store for him, or how close he came to seeing his cut short. As a resident of the Carson Animal Care Center, a high-kill shelter in Gardena, California, all he could do was sit and wait for someone to come along and save him, which he did week after week with no success.
