Turkey’s population rose to 77.7 million people in 2014, an increase of 1.28 million over the course of the year, according to data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute on Jan. 28.
Some 50.2 percent (38.98 million) of the population is male, while 49.8 percent (38.71 million) is female.
The proportion of the Turkish population living in cities increased to 91.8 percent in 2014, from 91.3 percent in 2013.
The most populated province in the country is Istanbul with 18.5 percent of Turkish citizens (14.38 million people). Istanbul is followed by Ankara with 6.6 percent (5.15 million people); İzmir with 5.3 percent (4.11 million people); Bursa with 3.6 percent (2.79 million people); and Antalya with 2.9 percent (2.22 million people). The least populated of Turkey’s 81 provinces is the northeastern province of Bayburt, which has just 80,607 inhabitants.
The median age of Turkey’s population increased to 30.7 in 2014, from 30.4 percent in 2013. The median age for males was 30.1, while for females it was 31.3. The provinces with the highest median ages in the country were Sinop at 39.1, Balıkesir at 38.6, and Edirne and Kastamonu at 38.0. The provinces with the lowest median ages were all in the southeast of the country, with Şırnak at 19.1, Şanlıurfa at 19.2, and Ağrı at 20.
The working age population between 15-64 increased by 0.1 points to 67.8 percent of the total - or 52.64 million people. The population aged 0-14 fell to 24.3 percent of the total (18.86 million people), while the population aged 65 and over rose to 8.0 percent of the total (6.19 million people).
The population density across Turkey - calculated by the average number of people per square kilometer - increased by 1 person in 2014, reaching 101.
The province with the highest population density was Istanbul, with 2,767 people per square kilometer. Istanbul was followed by Kocaeli with 477, İzmir with 342, Gaziantep with 277, and both Bursa and Yalova with 267. The eastern province of Tunceli had the smallest population density, with just 12 people per square kilometer.

Germany: Europe's largest Turkish population demonstrates against Erdogan
Thousands of Germans and Turks took to the streets of Berlin on Saturday to march in solidarity with recent pro-democracy protests sweeping Turkey. Protesters shouted demands for the resignation of the Turkish government led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's. Around 200,000 Turks live in Berlin, making the German capital the largest Turkish settlement outside Turkey.
Police estimate that 2,600 people took part in the demonstration, which passed peacefully without incident. Chants of "Erdogan, step down!", "Taksim is everywhere!" and "We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal!" rang through the street.
Supporters of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah flew the Lebanese party's bright yellow flag emblazoned with a green kalashnikov rifle, chanting slogans in solidarity with besieged Syrian president Bashar al-Assad: "Allah, Syria, Bashar, and only Bashar."
The march was organised by the Berlin wings of four Turkish political groups, all of secular and Kemalist ideological slant: the Youth Union of Turkey - a Kemalist and Socialist youth organisation; the Atatürk Society- a secular association; CHP Berlin (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi - Republican People's Party) - Turkey's main opposition party and the Isci Partisi (Workers' Party), a socialist and Kemalist party

The 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey (Greek: Ἡ Ἀνταλλαγή, Turkish: Mübadele) was based upon religious identity, and involved the Greek Orthodox citizens of Turkey and the Muslim citizens of Greece. It was a major compulsory population exchange, or agreed mutual expulsion.
The "Convention Concerning the Exchange of Greek and Turkish Populations" was signed at Lausanne, Switzerland, on 30 January 1923, by the governments of Greece and Turkey. It involved approximately 2 million people (around 1.5 million Anatolian Greeks and 500,000 Muslims in Greece), most of whom were forcibly made refugees and de jure denaturalized from their homelands.
By January 1923, the vast majority of Asia Minor Greeks and Pontic Greeks had already fled during the recent Greco-Turkish War; nonetheless, they were taken into account in the convention. According to calculations, during the autumn of 1922, around 900,000 Orthodox refugees had arrived in Greece (including 50,000 Armenians)
The Greek-Turkish population exchange was a result of the Turkish War of Independence. After Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's entrance into Izmir, followed by the abolishment of the Ottoman sultanate on November 1, 1922, a formal peace agreement was signed with Greece after months of negotiations at Lausanne on July 24, 1923. Two weeks after the treaty, the Allied Powers turned over Istanbul to the Nationalists, marking the final departure of occupation armies from Anatolia.
On October 29, 1923, the Grand Turkish National Assembly announced the creation of the Republic of Turkey, a state that would encompass most of the territories claimed by Mustafa Kemal in his National Pact of 1920.
The nation-state of Turkey was headed by Mustafa Kemal's the People's Party, which later became the Republican People's Party. The end of the Turkish War of Independence brought new administration to the region, but also brought new problems considering the demographic reconstruction of cities and towns, many of which were abandoned. The Greek occupation and the Turkish nationalist attacks left many of Turkey's cities and villages plundered and in ruins.
After the Balkan Wars, Greece had almost doubled its territory, and the population of the country rose from approximately 2.7 million to 4.8 million. With this newly annexed population, the proportion of 'minorities' in Greece rose to 13 percent, and following the end of the First World War, it increased to 20 percent. Most of the ethnic populations were Muslim in these annexed territories, but were not necessarily Greek in ethnicity. This is particularly true in the case of ethnic-Albanians who had inhabited the Çamëria region of Albania. During the deliberations held at Lausanne, the question of "who was Greek? Who was Turkish? Who was Albanian?" was routinely brought up. Greek representatives and Albanian representatives determined that the Albanians in Greece, restricted in the most northwestern part of the country, were not Turkish, and were distinguishable from the Turks (Albanians in this region included both Muslims and Greek Orthodox). Ankara still expected a thousand "Turkish-speakers" from the Çamëria to arrive to Anatolia, for settlement in Erdek, Ayvalık,Menteşe, Antalya, Senkile, Mersin, and Adana. Ultimately, Greek authorities decided to deport thousands of Muslims from the Çamëria region, together with myriad others from Larissa, Langada, Drama, Vodina, Serez, Edessa, Florina, Kilkis, Kavala, and Salonika. Between 1923 and 1930, the infusion of these refugees into Turkey would dramatically alter the Anatolian landscape. By 1927, Turkish officials had settled 32,315 individuals from Greece in the province of Bursa alone.
The road to the exchange
According to some sources, the population exchange, albeit messy and dangerous for many, was executed fairly quickly by respected supervisors. If the goal of the exchange was to achieve ethnic-national homogeneity, then this was achieved by both Turkey and Greece. For example, in 1906, over 80 percent of the population of present-day Turkey were Muslims. By 1927, only 2.6 percent of the population of Turkey were non-Muslim
The architect of the exchange was Fridtjof Nansen, commissioned by the League of Nations. As the first official high commissioner for refugees, Nansen designed and supervised the exchange, taking into account the interests of Greece, Turkey, and other West European states. As a talented diplomat with experience resettling Russian, Armenian, and Assyrian refugees after the first World War, Nansen had also created a new travel document for displaced persons of the World War in the process. He was chosen to be in charge of the peaceful resolution of the Greek-Turkish war of 1912,

Also 20% of turks are of the Alevi sect and of the Twelver Shia sect, Kurds also make up about 25% of the overall population of Turkey,
atheists and christians and other minority religions only add up to another 1.5 %. All of these groups would certainly not be supporters of isis, but when you subtract these numbers and only look at the turkish population who are sunni muslims, then one can say that one in two turkish sunni muslims either support isis or won't say what their real opinion is about them. in real terms, this number would be about 20 million people.

The nation-state of Turkey was headed by Mustafa Kemal's the People's Party, which later became the Republican People's Party. The end of the Turkish War of Independence brought new administration to the region, but also brought new problems considering the demographic reconstruction of cities and towns, many of which were abandoned. The Greek occupation and the Turkish nationalist attacks left many of Turkey's cities and villages plundered and in ruins. After the Balkan Wars, Greece had almost doubled its territory, and the population of the country rose from approximately 2.7 million to 4.8 million. With this newly annexed population, the proportion of 'minorities' in Greece rose to 13 percent, and following the end of the First World War, it increased to 20 percent. Most of the ethnic populations were Muslim in these annexed territories, but were not necessarily Greek in ethnicity. This is particularly true in the case of ethnic-Albanians who had inhabited the Çamëria region of Albania. During the deliberations held at Lausanne, the question of "who was Greek? Who was Turkish? Who was Albanian?" was routinely brought up. Greek representatives and Albanian representatives determined that the Albanians in Greece, restricted in the most northwestern part of the country, were not Turkish, and were distinguishable from the Turks (Albanians in this region included both Muslims and Greek Orthodox). Ankara still expected a thousand "Turkish-speakers" from the Çamëria to arrive to Anatolia, for settlement in Erdek, Ayvalık,Menteşe, Antalya, Senkile, Mersin, and Adana. Ultimately, Greek authorities decided to deport thousands of Muslims from the Çamëria region, together with myriad others from Larissa, Langada, Drama, Vodina, Serez, Edessa, Florina, Kilkis, Kavala, and Salonika. Between 1923 and 1930, the infusion of these refugees into Turkey would dramatically alter the Anatolian landscape. By 1927, Turkish officials had settled 32,315 individuals from Greece in the province of Bursa alone. The road to the exchange According to some sources, the population exchange, albeit messy and dangerous for many, was executed fairly quickly by respected supervisors. If the goal of the exchange was to achieve ethnic-national homogeneity, then this was achieved by both Turkey and Greece. For example, in 1906, over 80 percent of the population of present-day Turkey were Muslims. By 1927, only 2.6 percent of the population of Turkey were non-Muslim The architect of the exchange was Fridtjof Nansen, commissioned by the League of Nations. As the first official high commissioner for refugees, Nansen designed and supervised the exchange, taking into account the interests of Greece, Turkey, and other West European states. As a talented diplomat with experience resettling Russian, Armenian, and Assyrian refugees after the first World War, Nansen had also created a new travel document for displaced persons of the World War in the process. The provinces with the lowest median ages were all in the southeast of the country, with Şırnak at 19.1, Şanlıurfa at 19.2, and Ağrı at 20.
The working age population between 15-64 increased by 0.1 points to 67.8 percent of the total - or 52.64 million people. The population aged 0-14 fell to 24.3 percent of the total (18.86 million people), while the population aged 65 and over rose to 8.0 percent of the total (6.19 million people).
The population density across Turkey - calculated by the average number of people per square kilometer - increased by 1 person in 2014, reaching 101.
The province with the highest population density was Istanbul, with 2,767 people per square kilometer. Istanbul was followed by Kocaeli with 477, İzmir with 342, Gaziantep with 277, and both Bursa and Yalova with 267. The eastern province of Tunceli had the smallest population density, with just 12 people per square kilometer.

Thousands of Germans and Turks took to the streets of Berlin on Saturday to march in solidarity with recent pro-democracy protests sweeping Turkey. Protesters shouted demands for the resignation of the Turkish government led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's. Around 200,000 Turks live in Berlin, making the German capital the largest Turkish settlement outside Turkey.
Police estimate that 2,600 people took part in the demonstration, which passed peacefully without incident. Chants of "Erdogan, step down!", "Taksim is everywhere!" and "We are the soldiers of Mustafa Kemal!" rang through the street.
Supporters of Syrian President Bashar Al Assad and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah flew the Lebanese party's bright yellow flag emblazoned with a green kalashnikov rifle, chanting slogans in solidarity with besieged Syrian president Bashar al-Assad: "Allah, Syria, Bashar, and only Bashar."
The march was organised by the Berlin wings of four Turkish political groups, all of secular and Kemalist ideological slant: the Youth Union of Turkey - a Kemalist and Socialist youth organisation; the Atatürk Society- a secular association; CHP Berlin (Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi - Republican People's Party) - Turkey's main opposition party and the Isci Partisi (Workers' Party), a socialist and Kemalist party

The 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey (Greek: Ἡ Ἀνταλλαγή, Turkish: Mübadele) was based upon religious identity, and involved the Greek Orthodox citizens of Turkey and the Muslim citizens of Greece. It was a major compulsory population exchange, or agreed mutual expulsion.
The "Convention Concerning the Exchange of Greek and Turkish Populations" was signed at Lausanne, Switzerland, on 30 January 1923, by the governments of Greece and Turkey. It involved approximately 2 million people (around 1.5 million Anatolian Greeks and 500,000 Muslims in Greece), most of whom were forcibly made refugees and de jure denaturalized from their homelands.
By January 1923, the vast majority of Asia Minor Greeks and Pontic Greeks had already fled during the recent Greco-Turkish War; nonetheless, they were taken into account in the convention. According to calculations, during the autumn of 1922, around 900,000 Orthodox refugees had arrived in Greece (including 50,000 Armenians)
The Greek-Turkish population exchange was a result of the Turkish War of Independence. After Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's entrance into Izmir, followed by the abolishment of the Ottoman sultanate on November 1, 1922, a formal peace agreement was signed with Greece after months of negotiations at Lausanne on July 24, 1923. Two weeks after the treaty, the Allied Powers turned over Istanbul to the Nationalists, marking the final departure of occupation armies from Anatolia.
On October 29, 1923, the Grand Turkish National Assembly announced the creation of the Republic of Turkey, a state that would encompass most of the territories claimed by Mustafa Kemal in his National Pact of 1920.
The nation-state of Turkey was headed by Mustafa Kemal's the People's Party, which later became the Republican People's Party. The end of the Turkish War of Independence brought new administration to the region, but also brought new problems considering the demographic reconstruction of cities and towns, many of which were abandoned. The Greek occupation and the Turkish nationalist attacks left many of Turkey's cities and villages plundered and in ruins.
After the Balkan Wars, Greece had almost doubled its territory, and the population of the country rose from approximately 2.7 million to 4.8 million. With this newly annexed population, the proportion of 'minorities' in Greece rose to 13 percent, and following the end of the First World War, it increased to 20 percent. Most of the ethnic populations were Muslim in these annexed territories, but were not necessarily Greek in ethnicity. This is particularly true in the case of ethnic-Albanians who had inhabited the Çamëria region of Albania. During the deliberations held at Lausanne, the question of "who was Greek? Who was Turkish? Who was Albanian?" was routinely brought up. Greek representatives and Albanian representatives determined that the Albanians in Greece, restricted in the most northwestern part of the country, were not Turkish, and were distinguishable from the Turks (Albanians in this region included both Muslims and Greek Orthodox). Ankara still expected a thousand "Turkish-speakers" from the Çamëria to arrive to Anatolia, for settlement in Erdek, Ayvalık,Menteşe, Antalya, Senkile, Mersin, and Adana. Ultimately, Greek authorities decided to deport thousands of Muslims from the Çamëria region, together with myriad others from Larissa, Langada, Drama, Vodina, Serez, Edessa, Florina, Kilkis, Kavala, and Salonika. Between 1923 and 1930, the infusion of these refugees into Turkey would dramatically alter the Anatolian landscape. By 1927, Turkish officials had settled 32,315 individuals from Greece in the province of Bursa alone.
The road to the exchange
According to some sources, the population exchange, albeit messy and dangerous for many, was executed fairly quickly by respected supervisors. If the goal of the exchange was to achieve ethnic-national homogeneity, then this was achieved by both Turkey and Greece. For example, in 1906, over 80 percent of the population of present-day Turkey were Muslims. By 1927, only 2.6 percent of the population of Turkey were non-Muslim
The architect of the exchange was Fridtjof Nansen, commissioned by the League of Nations. As the first official high commissioner for refugees, Nansen designed and supervised the exchange, taking into account the interests of Greece, Turkey, and other West European states. As a talented diplomat with experience resettling Russian, Armenian, and Assyrian refugees after the first World War, Nansen had also created a new travel document for displaced persons of the World War in the process. He was chosen to be in charge of the peaceful resolution of the Greek-Turkish war of 1912,

Also 20% of turks are of the Alevi sect and of the Twelver Shia sect, Kurds also make up about 25% of the overall population of Turkey,
atheists and christians and other minority religions only add up to another 1.5 %. All of these groups would certainly not be supporters of isis, but when you subtract these numbers and only look at the turkish population who are sunni muslims, then one can say that one in two turkish sunni muslims either support isis or won't say what their real opinion is about them. in real terms, this number would be about 20 million people.

The 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey stemmed from the "Convention Concerning the Exchange of Greek and Turkish Populations" signed at Lausanne, Switzerland, on 30 January 1923, by the governments of Greece and Turkey. It involved approximately 2 million people, most of whom were forcibly made refugees and de jure denaturalized from their homelands.
By the end of 1922, the vast majority of native Asia Minor Greeks had fled the recent Greek genocide and Greece's later defeat in the Greco-Turkish War. According to some calculations, during the autumn of 1922, around 900,000 Greeks had arrived in Greece. The population exchange was envisioned by Turkey as a way to formalize, and make permanent, the exodus of Greeks from Turkey, while initiating a new exodus of a smaller number of Muslims from Greece to supply settlers for occupying the newly depopulated regions of Turkey, while Greece saw it as a way to supply its masses of new propertyless Greek refugees from Turkey with lands to settle from the exchanged Muslims of Greece.

Chaban Salih and Yuseiba Dilan, members of the Muslim community in Berlin, have been putting up leaflets on mosques and Turkish stores, calling all on all immigrants to use their right to vote on Sunday and express their concerns.
Members of the Green Party and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) have been trying to connect with immigrant populations ahead of the vote, arguing that diversity is a part of German society.
For one of her last meetings with voters, Renate Kuenast from the Greens came to the Sehitlik mosque in Berlin Kreuzberg.
She spoke to about 50 young Muslims who were waiting to get answers to issues such as dual citizenship for Turkish migrants.
Under German law, one has to choose at age 18 between a German and a Turkish passport.
Today only about half of foreign-born German residents have the right to vote.
This will change as more of their children and grandchildren come of age.
About a third of children under 10 are of immigrant origin, while the ethnic German population is ageing and shrinking.
The SPD and the Greens have promised to solve the problem for second-generation Turks in Germany by allowing dual nationality, a concept Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) opposes.
"It's important for us that people with diverse ethnic backgrounds are on our list of candidates and have a good chance of getting elected to parliament," said Kuenast after meeting with a group of young Muslims at Sehitlik mosque.
But the countdown is ticking for all German parties.
Now every vote counts and the nearly 10 percent of voters with foreign roots have become very important.
The CDU has promoted more members with foreign roots to modernise its image and to reach out to the minority voters.
The SPD, long the choice of migrants, lost a lot of trust because of anti-immigrant expressions by some of their members.
Second-generation Turk and SPD candidate Cansel Kiziltepe feels that the differences between ethnic German voters and voters with a foreign background are not that deep.
The 38-year-old, whose parents came to Germany from Turkey 53 years ago, says that they have common interests such as pension increases.
"Inclusion" may the magic word, supposed to unify immigrants and Germans. But until now the project has failed.
Most immigrants feel removed rather than integrated, said 40 year-old Mesut Kobat, who has been living in Germany for 37 years.
"I just want to be treated equally, not be disadvantaged, and recognised as a person," Kobat said.
"I don't need integration I need to feel accepted. I can be integrated but if I'm not accepted it still doesn't work. We have to speak to each other but you have to want to listen," he added.
Muslim voters like Pinar Cetin are just disappointed, mainly by the bigger parties.
"I don't feel represented by the large parties and I'm disappointed in them because for the past few years they've made lots of promises and kept few of them," Cetin said.
During the discussion at the Sehitlik mosque in Berlin, German politicians said that they will do everything for a better integration of migrants in Germany.
Migrant voters will let them know on Sunday whether they have gained their trust.

The Greek genocide, part of which is known as the Pontic genocide, was the systematic ethnic cleansing of the Christian Ottoman Greek population from its historic homeland in Asia Minor, central Anatolia, Pontus, and the former Russian Caucasus province of Kars Oblast during World War I and its aftermath (1914--23). It was instigated by the government of the Ottoman Empire against the Greek population of the Empire and it included massacres, forced deportations involving death marches, summary expulsions, arbitrary executions, and destruction of Christian Orthodox cultural, historical and religious monuments. According to various sources, several hundred thousand Ottoman Greeks died during this period. Some of the survivors and refugees, especially those in Eastern provinces, took refuge in the neighbouring Russian Empire. After the end of the 1919--22 Greco-Turkish War, most of the Greeks remaining in the Ottoman Empire were transferred to Greece under the terms of the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Other ethnic groups were similarly attacked by the Ottoman Empire during this period, including Assyrians and Armenians, and some scholars consider those events to be part of the same policy of extermination.
The Allies of World War I condemned the Ottoman government-sponsored massacres as crimes against humanity. More recently, the International Association of Genocide Scholars passed a resolution in 2007 affirming that the Ottoman campaign against Christian minorities of the Empire, including the Greeks, was genocide. Some other organisations have also passed resolutions recognising the campaign as a genocide, as have the parliaments of Greece, Cyprus and Sweden.
At the outbreak of World War I, Asia Minor was ethnically diverse, its population including Turks, Azeris, Greeks, Armenians, Kurds, Zazas, Circassians, Assyrians, Jews, and Laz people.
Among the causes for the Turkish campaign against the Greek population was a fear that the population would aid the Ottoman Empire's enemies, and a belief among some Turks that to form a modern nation state it was necessary to purge from the territories of the state those national groups who could threaten the integrity of a modern Turkish nation state.
According to a German military attaché, the Ottoman minister of war Ismail Enver had declared in October 1915 that he wanted to "solve the Greek problem during the war... in the same way he believe[d] he solved the Armenian problem."
Origins
The Greek presence in Asia Minor has been dated to at least the time of Homer around 800 BCE. Prior to their conquest by the Turkic people the Greeks were one of several indigenous peoples living in Asia Minor. The geographer Strabo referred to Smyrna as the first Greek city in Asia Minor. Greeks referred to the Black Sea as the "Euxinos Pontos" or "hospitable sea" and starting in the eighth century BCE they began navigating its shores and settling along its coast. The most notable Greek cities of the Black Sea were Trebizond, Sampsounta, Sinope and Heraclea Pontica. In medieval times Trebizond became an important trade hub and capital of its own state, the Empire of Trebizond.
In the summer of 1914 the Special Organization (Teşkilat-ı Mahsusa), assisted by government and army officials, conscripted Greek men of military age from Thrace and western Anatolia into Labour Battalions in which hundreds of thousands died. Sent hundreds of miles into the Interior of Anatolia, these conscripts were employed in road-making, building, tunnel excavating and other field work but their numbers were heavily reduced through either privations and ill-treatment or by outright massacre by their Ottoman guards. This program of forced conscription later expanded to other regions of the Empire including Pontus
Conscription of Greek men was supplemented by massacres and by deportations involving death marches of the general population. Greek villages and towns would be surrounded by Ottomans and their inhabitants massacred. Such was the story in Phocaea (Greek: Φώκαια), a town in western Anatolia twenty-five miles (40 km) northwest of Smyrna, on 12 June 1914 where the slain bodies of men, women and children were thrown down a well.
In July 1915 the Greek chargé d'affaires explained that the deportations "can not be any other issue than an annihilation war against the Greek nation in Turkey and as measures hereof they have been implementing forced conversions to Islam, in obvious aim to, that if after the end of the war there again would be a question of European intervention for the protection of the Christians, there will be as few of them left as possible."

After the end of the 1919--22 Greco-Turkish War, most of the Greeks remaining in the Ottoman Empire were transferred to Greece under the terms of the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey. Other ethnic groups were similarly attacked by the Ottoman Empire during this period, including Assyrians and Armenians, and some scholars consider those events to be part of the same policy of extermination.
The Allies of World War I condemned the Ottoman government-sponsored massacres as crimes against humanity. More recently, the International Association of Genocide Scholars passed a resolution in 2007 affirming that the Ottoman campaign against Christian minorities of the Empire, including the Greeks, was genocide. Some other organisations have also passed resolutions recognising the campaign as a genocide, as have the parliaments of Greece, Cyprus and Sweden.
At the outbreak of World War I, Asia Minor was ethnically diverse, its population including Turks, Azeris, Greeks, Armenians, Kurds, Zazas, Circassians, Assyrians, Jews, and Laz people.
Among the causes for the Turkish campaign against the Greek population was a fear that the population would aid the Ottoman Empire's enemies, and a belief among some Turks that to form a modern nation state it was necessary to purge from the territories of the state those national groups who could threaten the integrity of a modern Turkish nation state.
According to a German military attaché, the Ottoman minister of war Ismail Enver had declared in October 1915 that he wanted to "solve the Greek problem during the war... in the same way he believe[d] he solved the Armenian problem."
Origins
The Greek presence in Asia Minor has been dated to at least the time of Homer around 800 BCE. Prior to their conquest by the Turkic people the Greeks were one of several indigenous peoples living in Asia Minor. The geographer Strabo referred to Smyrna as the first Greek city in Asia Minor. Greeks referred to the Black Sea as the "Euxinos Pontos" or "hospitable sea" and starting in the eighth century BCE they began navigating its shores and settling along its coast. The most notable Greek cities of the Black Sea were Trebizond, Sampsounta, Sinope and Heraclea Pontica. In medieval times Trebizond became an important trade hub and capital of its own state, the Empire of Trebizond.
In the summer of 1914 the Special Organization (Teşkilat-ı Mahsusa), assisted by government and army officials, conscripted Greek men of military age from Thrace and western Anatolia into Labour Battalions in which hundreds of thousands died. Sent hundreds of miles into the Interior of Anatolia, these conscripts were employed in road-making, building, tunnel excavating and other field work but their numbers were heavily reduced through either privations and ill-treatment or by outright massacre by their Ottoman guards. This program of forced conscription later expanded to other regions of the Empire including Pontus
Conscription of Greek men was supplemented by massacres and by deportations involving death marches of the general population. Greek villages and towns would be surrounded by Ottomans and their inhabitants massacred. Such was the story in Phocaea (Greek: Φώκαια), a town in western Anatolia twenty-five miles (40 km) northwest of Smyrna, on 12 June 1914 where the slain bodies of men, women and children were thrown down a well.
In July 1915 the Greek chargé d'affaires explained that the deportations "can not be any other issue than an annihilation war against the Greek nation in Turkey and as measures hereof they have been implementing forced conversions to Islam, in obvious aim to, that if after the end of the war there again would be a question of European intervention for the protection of the Christians, there will be as few of them left as possible."

In Bulgaria, a country of seven million people and a member of the European Union since 2007, Muslims of Turkish origin comprise about 9 percent of the population.
People from what we now call Turkey have lived in the Balkan region since it became part of the Ottoman Empire more than 500 years ago.
But the fortunes of ethnic Turks changed considerably when Bulgaria declared independence in 1908 and the Ottomans lost nearly all their territories in the Balkan Wars (1912-13).
Two-and-a-half million Muslims died in these wars, according to Justin McCarthy, a professor of history at the University of Louisville. A further one million emigrated. Even after these levels of casualties, Bulgaria remained the country with the highest concentration of people of Turkish origin.
"What happened to the Turks in the Balkans was one of the worst things that has ever happened to human beings," says McCarthy. "It is one of the greatest disasters that has ever been and yet no one knows about it. No one knows anything about it."
This film tells this little-known story of the how the Bulgarian Turks suffered discrimination, detention, even mass deportation, over their names, language and cultural identity throughout much of the 20th century - and how they continue to fight for equality in the country they call home.
Successive governments acted in different ways towards the Turkish minority in the last century under a policy of so-called "assimilation" - but under Communist rule, schools were closed, their language was banned and they were forced to change their names to Christian ones and undergo mass baptism.
Resentment led to revolt in the 1980s. Demonstrations became violent, protesters were killed and activists jailed or deported. In May 1989, more than 300,000 ethnic Turks were expelled en masse in what became known as "The Big Excursion". Turkey ended up closing its borders during the exodus and some families were forced to turn back.
After the fall of Communism, Bulgarian Turks launched the Movement for Rights and Freedom party (MRF) in January 1990 and entered parliament that year. They set about reviving and rediscovering their Islamic and cultural heritage. In 2012, the Bulgarian parliament condemned the previous policies of assimilation.
Nevertheless today, covert discrimination against Bulgaria's Turks persists as does more blatant racism from extreme nationalists and far-right political parties. Bulgaria's Turks continue to face challenges as they look to achieve complete religious freedom, education in Turkish, their cultural heritage and to fight for equality in a land they've inhabited for generations.

With a population of 14.4 million, the city forms the largest urban agglomeration in Europe[d] as well as the largest in the Middle East, and the sixth-largest city proper in the world. Istanbul's vast area of 5,343 square kilometers (2,063 sq mi) is coterminous with Istanbul Province, of which the city is the administrative capital. Istanbul straddles the Bosphorus strait in northwestern Turkey, between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea.
Turkish cuisine is largely the heritage of Ottoman cuisine, which can be described as a fusion and refinement of Central Asian, Caucasian, Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Balkan cuisines.
The country's position between the East and the Mediterranean Sea helped the Turks gain complete control of major trade routes, and an ideal environment allowed plants and animals to flourish. Turkish cuisine was well established by the mid-1400s, the beginning of the Ottoman Empire's six hundred-year reign. Yogurt salads, fish in olive oil, and stuffed and wrapped vegetables became Turkish staples. The empire, eventually spanning from Austria to northern Africa, used its land and water routes to import exotic ingredients from all over the world. By the end of the 1500s, the Ottoman court housed over 1,400 live-in cooks and passed laws regulating the freshness of food. Since the fall of the empire in World War I (1914–1918) and the establishment of the Turkish Republic, foreign food such as French hollandaise sauce and western fast food have made their way into the modern Turkish diet.

The process of globalization in Turkey is, for better and for worse, associated mostly with Western ideas, and quite often, American versions of those ideas. Not all markers of modernity bear a negative stigma, as items like cell phones and cars have been embraced by large segments of the Turkish population. I hope to point out some of the paradoxes of Turkish culture by considering some understandings of and responses to the process globalization. Secondly, I hope that this discussion will emphasize the need for greater and more nuanced attention to Turkish groups and individuals who are experiencing processes of cultural redefinition on local and global scales.
About this Speaker:
Margaret R. Hawthorne has applied her training as a historian to a variety of experiences. She helped to establish and present the curriculum for the Institute for the Study and Practice of Leadership at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. Dr. Hawthorne served with NATO forces in Kabul, Afghanistan. She has also written curriculum and trained deploying social scientists. Most recently, Dr. Hawthorne spent time in Turkey where she taught university classes in English language and American culture in Çannakale Onsekkiz Mart Üniversitesi. Dr. Hawthorne holds MA degrees in both French and History from the University of Mississippi and a PhD in History from the University of Kansas where she is currently an adjunct research faculty member.

Relations between the two nations have spiraled downward, some warning that Turkey’s NATO membership could pull the entire alliance into a war with Russia. But according to Yasar Yakis, former Turkish Foreign Minister, although the Russian plane did violate Turkey’s airspace, “each time an airspace is violated, you don’t down the plane.” He believes that Turkey could have played a more positive role with the Russians on the Ukrainian crisis, had it not been for the poor relations caused by the plane incident.
