Smartphone Video Production, Simple Gear Basics for Interviews using an iPhone 6
With the introduction of newer and better video taking options on today's smartphones, it has opened up a whole new era of semi high-quality production available to both the novice and professional alike. However, there are situations where controlling the sound quality or environment can be a challenge when using a smartphone as your primary tool in video production.
I love the fact that my iPhone 6+ takes great video and there are times where I need to have a really portable production set that can easily fit in my pocket or in my satchel yet can take very good quality HD videos with a digital audio tract. This is especially usefully for sit down video interviews.
As anyone knows, good quality audio is really important when making a video, especially where speech is involved. Echoing, or a lot of background noise, or muffling can really ruin what would be a decent video otherwise.
I've spent a considerable amount of time experimenting with a setup that I like to use that works really well for such a thing. There are quite a few options available, including patch cords, dongles, dedicated microphones etc that utilize the
3.5mm audio jack on the iPhone for sound input.
Unfortunately, they are all analog input sources and not digital. Using the iRig Pro, opens up the possibility to use just about every professional microphone available that uses an
XLR connection.
I've included the links here for further evaluation or purchase if you so desire. No profit is being received as a result of these recommendations. However, I just want to ensure that these endorsement of products, and or setup, suit their intended uses. I welcome others to join in this conversation.
By no means is this the very best setup that is possible using a smartphone in video production, just one that satisfies my current objectives of
Portability,
Reliability, Ease of Use, Pro-Quality and Expense.
Please feel free to add to the recommendations here and list your experiences as well, since new products are being introduced into the market place all the time.
