RSW was conceived in 1973 when it was clear that the existing airport in Fort Myers, Page Field, would be too small. The government of Lee County selected a site near Interstate 75, then under construction. Groundbreaking was in 1980, and Southwest Florida Regional Airport opened on schedule, May 14, 1983, with a single 8400-ft runway. Delta Air Lines operated the first flight. The original terminal was located along Chamberlain Parkway on the north side of the runway.
The airport was renamed Southwest Florida International Airport in 1993, though it had hosted international flights since 1984 and U.S. Customs since 1987, mainly for flights to Germany. The runway was lengthened to 12,000 ft (3,658 m) in 1993. The airport has hosted Boeing 747s (including Air Force One), but as of 2009 the largest aircraft scheduled to RSW are the Airbus A330-200s on Air Berlin non-stop flights to Düsseldorf and seasonally the Boeing 767-300s operated by Delta Air Lines non-stop from Minneapolis/St. Paul .

Florida (
i/ˈflɒrɪdə/) is a state in the southeastern United States, bordered to the west by the Gulf of Mexico, to the north by Alabama and Georgia and to the east by the Atlantic Ocean. Florida is the 22nd most extensive, the 4th most populous, and the 8th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state capital is Tallahassee, its largest city is Jacksonville, and the South Florida metropolitan area is the largest metropolitan area in the southeastern U.S.
Much of Florida is situated on a peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida. Its geography is marked by a coastline, by the omnipresence of water and the threat of hurricanes. Florida has the longest coastline in the contiguous United States, encompassing approximately 1,350 miles (2,170 km), and is the only state to border both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the state is at or near sea level and its terrain is characterized by sedimentary soils. The climate varies from subtropical in the north to tropical in the south. Its symbolic animals like the American alligator, Florida panther and the manatee, can be found in the Everglades, one of the most famous national parks in the world.

An international airport is an airport that can accommodate international flights. They are typically equipped with customs and immigration facilities. Such airports are usually larger, and often feature longer runways and facilities to accommodate the large aircraft commonly used for international or intercontinental travel. International airports often also host domestic flights (flights which occur within the country), to serve travellers to and from these regions of the country.
In many smaller countries most airports are international airports, so the concept of an "international airport" has little meaning. In certain countries however, there is a sub-category of limited international airports which handle international flights, but are limited to short-haul destinations (often due to geographical factors) or are mixed civilian/military airports.[citation needed]
Many airports with regularly scheduled international service have the word "International" in their official names, but others, including such major airports as London Heathrow Airport, Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, Frankfurt Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and George Bush Intercontinental Airport do not. Conversely, some airports which call themselves international airports, especially in smaller United States cities, in fact have no scheduled international airline passenger service but do have customs and immigration facilities serving charter, cargo and general aviation flights. At many of these airports customs and immigration services are only available with several hours advance notice. One example of such an airport is Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids, Michigan. A few, such as Gary/Chicago International Airport in Gary, Indiana, are in fact not international airports at all; they are not designated as airports of entry but aspire to become such in the future and added "international airport" to their names as a marketing tool.[citation needed]

The runway was lengthened to 12,000 ft (3,658 m) in 1993. The airport has hosted Boeing 747s (including Air Force One), but as of 2009 the largest aircraft scheduled to RSW are the Airbus A330-200s on Air Berlin non-stop flights to Düsseldorf and seasonally the Boeing 767-300s operated by Delta Air Lines non-stop from Minneapolis/St. Paul .

For many centuries this huge swamp area was inhabited by the Seminole Indians and today the Everglades are one of the greatest natural attractions in the U.S.A. Unlike the somewhat daunting appearance of the alligator the surroundings here are far more benign. The pink flamingo has for many years been associated with Florida and everywhere the croaking of frogs fills the air. There is a huge variety of birdlife as the vast areas of swampland are an ideal habitat and the water is not only rich in fish, various predators can also be found in large numbers. A total of six hundred species of fish live in the waters of the Everglades and in the summer months when the water level is particularly high there are huge shoals of fish to be found but in the dry months of winter they travel to deeper waters. The alligator is the indisputed king of these marshlands and no other creature is as powerful. We don’t only intend to observe the alligators from the shoreline, we also want to see them from within the water. They’re everywhere! Because of their valuable skin they were once almost exterminated. It is a fallacy that the alligator is a bloodthirsty, murderous creature as, unprovoked, this primeval reptile is almost indifferent to our presence and even from a close distance it remains perfectly calm. Despite all the recent encroachment by Man, the world of the alligator has retained much of its mysterious and magical aura and the allure of this unique region still continues to impress in a very remarkable way.

Even the most cursory drive through the city will tell you one thing: there is no disguising the fact Orlando is a city built on theme parks. Lots of them. Strange to think that until 1966, though, there was precious little here in central Florida. A few roadside attractions aside, it was one man, Walt Disney, who really changed the scenery here. No matter which way you slice it, growth has spiralled thanks to a huge influx of tourists that followed the arrival of Walt Disney World Resort.
Almost all of Florida's cities and resorts are based around its long coastline, naturally capitalising on the beaches or swampland national parks that attract so many international visitors. Orlando is the only real exception, a strange, idiosyncratic place in the middle of the Floridian wasteland, and coincidentally one of the most famous resort towns in the world.
There are conflicting legends as to how the city of Orlando came by its name, from heroic soldiers to local cattle ranchers to a nod to Shakespeare. Whatever the case may be, some 47 million tourists a year come to see the place for themselves.
From the original Magic Kingdom, which opened in 1971, the colossal Disney empire has added three more theme parks, two water parks and a host of associated developments, including hotels, shops and golf courses to make it a true 'World' resort.
With Disney setting the example, SeaWorld (three theme parks) and Universal (two) have added to Orlando's reputation as the family entertainment capital of the world. Between them, they draw nearly 50 million visitors every year, and that has meant a huge growth in associated hotels, restaurants and shops, plus a host of smaller-scale attractions.
However, this young city has also developed its own identity that stretches beyond the wearing of plastic mouse ears and thrill rides. There are a significant number of high-tech industries relocating here, and the downtown area is fast developing yuppie overtones. There are even ambitious plans to become a major cultural centre. Orlando is also the USA's number two convention location; the attraction for incentive activities for competing sales teams is no mystery.
There has been a stab at giving the city some historic context with the promotion of 'Old Orlando', which is part of Downtown, encompassing Orange Avenue and Garland Avenue. There's also a historic district around Lake Eola, with brick streets lined with old oak trees. Some of the homes here may have been originally built by the wealthy citrus traders of the late 19th century.
Having said that, the main attraction for 99% of visitors remains the theme parks, together with the likes of the nearby Kennedy Space Center. There are also some charming, retro-looking former roadside attractions such as Gatorland that have survived as lucrative sidelines to the more high-tech main attractions. And, in order to attract the all-important repeat visitors, Orlando has become adept at re-inventing itself and providing new attractions at regular intervals.

The city and county in 2012 collected $43.9 million from the 5% bed tax it charges, after hotels in the area recorded an occupancy rate for the year of 72.7 percent and an average daily rate of $114.48. The district has 561 hotels and motels comprising nearly 35,000 rooms. Forty six cruise ships sailed from Port Everglades in 2012. Greater Fort Lauderdale has over 4,000 restaurants, 63 golf courses, 12 shopping malls, 16 museums, 132 nightclubs, 278 parkland campsites, and 100 marinas housing 45,000 resident yachts.[5]
Fort Lauderdale is named after a series of forts built by the United States during the Second Seminole War. The forts took their name from Major William Lauderdale (~1782-1838), younger brother of Lieutenant Colonel James Lauderdale. William Lauderdale was the commander of the detachment of soldiers who built the first fort.[6] However, development of the city did not begin until 50 years after the forts were abandoned at the end of the conflict. Three forts named "Fort Lauderdale" were constructed; the first was at the fork of the New River, the second at Tarpon Bend on the New River between the Colee Hammock and Rio Vista neighborhoods, and the third near the site of the Bahia Mar Marina.

I didn't really have the time to look up where all these planes were departing to/arriving from, but normally I usually look that up and include it in the notes here. I'll try to do that next time. The City of Orlando is nicknamed "The City Beautiful" and its symbol is the fountain at Lake Eola. As the most visited American city in 2009,[12] Orlando's famous attractions form the backbone of its tourism industry: Walt Disney World Resort, located approximately 21 miles (34 km) southwest of Downtown Orlando in Lake Buena Vista, opened by the Walt Disney Company in 1971; the Universal Orlando Resort, opened in 1999 as a major expansion of Universal Studios Florida; SeaWorld; Gatorland; and Wet 'n Wild. With the exception of Walt Disney World, most major attractions are located along International Drive. The city is also one of the busiest American cities for conferences and conventions.
Like other major cities in the Sun Belt, Orlando grew rapidly during the 1980s and into the first decade of the 21st century. Orlando is home to the University of Central Florida, which is the second-largest university campus in the United States in terms of enrollment as of 2012. In 2010, Orlando was listed as a "Gamma−" level of world-city in the World Cities Study Group’s inventory.[13] Orlando ranks as the fourth most popular American city based on where people want to live according to a 2009 Pew Research Center study.[14]

Many flights were diverted to Tampa or Orlando that afternoon - we were lucky given the circumstances and just vectored around Florida towards the Florida Keys, Cuba and than upwards the Florida Gulf Coast before final vectors for a landing on RWY26R. Look at the amazing waterspray caused by the reversers, giving in impression about the amount of water on the runway.
Total airborne time was 10 hours and 50 minutes and then another hour of hold and taxi on the ground until we reached the gate.
Kudos to the pilots really - manual landing / autopilot disconnect sound at 21:48, and then nicely correcting a strong windgust / nose-up pitch at 22:34 - great flight and amazing landing
