A Delta Air Lines Boeing 747 diverted to the Pacific Ocean's remote Midway Atoll last week. That came after a "sudden and very serious windscreen crack ... appeared before the pilots while it was flying between Honolulu and Osaka," reports Ben Sandilands in his Plane Talking blog.
After the windshield cracked, the Delta crew opted to divert to the 7,900-foot runway at Henderson Field on Midway's Sand Island. The Aviation Herald, which focuses on airline safety-related incidents, notes the aircraft then "hit two birds while on approach to Henderson Airfield causing damage to a flap (but) continued for a safe landing about one hour after the windshield cracked."
The flight -- Delta Flight 277 -- was en route from Honolulu to Osaka, Japan, at the time of the incident. It landed at Midway around 5:40 p.m. local time, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
"We don't usually land planes during the daylight hours when we have nesting albatross on the ground because of bird strike hazards," Sue Schulmeister of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says to Hawaii's KITV-TV. "But we didn't have a choice in this case because they needed to land because of their cracked windshield."
"The pilots were -- needless to say -- thrilled that Midway was here that they could land this aircraft," Schulmeister adds to Hawaii's KHON 2 TV.
The Fish and Wildlife Service administers the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.
HawaiiNewsNow.com says passengers on Flight 277 were "kept ... on board until a second 747 arrived from Japan to deliver parts and mechanics, and fly the passengers ... to Japan. Passengers changed planes in the middle of the night and left for Osaka about 5 a.m., just before light and the albatross and other birds on the Refuge began to fly."
As its name suggests, the Midway Atoll's remote location is about halfway between North America and Asia.
Plane Talking's Sandilands notes the Sand Island "strip is a designated emergency runway for twin-engine airliners flying the north Pacific routes."

Fighter Jets Make Emergency Landing at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge
Midway Runaway Provides Critical Service
A U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 fighter jet traveling from Honolulu to Iwakuni, Japan, made a precautionary landing on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge early today after experiencing a mechanical problem.
Traveling in a convoy of four F/A-18s and a KC-10 after supporting a Rim of the Pacific exercise, the F/A-18 landed safely at Henderson Airfield on Midway's Sand Island at 10:33 a.m. SST, followed by its escort. The other aircraft circled the Atoll and continued their transit to Wake Island. No one was injured.
"There is never a dull moment on this strategically positioned atoll," said Barry Stieglitz, Supervisor of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's national wildlife refuges in the Pacific.
Since its operation as a national wildlife refuge, Midway has become a landing strip not only for millions of seabirds but for commercial aircraft, such as the Delta 747 that made an emergency landing with 359 passengers on board last year. Military aircraft often request permission to land for refueling purposes, and ships at sea call for emergency medical services and boat and airlift help to provide critical transport via medevac to Honolulu.
"These rescues at sea and on land are a credit to the skills and services provided by the Fish and Wildlife Service staff and its contractor, Defense Base Services, Inc.," Stieglitz said.
In addition to Fish and Wildlife Service funding, money is provided by the Federal Aviation Administration to administer Henderson Airfield on Sand Island. Unfortunately, providing these life-support services may soon be compromised due to a $1.2 million dollar shortfall in Midway's budget beginning October 1.
"The budget has simply not kept up with increases in the cost of fuel and infrastructure maintenance," Stieglitz said.
Located within the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, the Refuge's Henderson Airfield is the responsibility of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with funding support from the Federal Aviation Administration. This year alone the Refuge staff and its Defense Base Services, Inc., contractor successfully managed and served more than 30 landings for refueling or emergency landing purposes.

Midway Atoll
Midway Atoll (/ˈmɪdweɪ/; also called Midway Island and Midway Islands; Hawaiian: Pihemanu Kauihelani) is a 2.4-square-mile (6.2 km2) atoll in the North Pacific Ocean at 28°12′N 177°21′W / 28.200°N 177.350°W / 28.200; -177.350Coordinates: 28°12′N 177°21′W / 28.200°N 177.350°W / 28.200; -177.350. As its name suggests, Midway is roughly equidistant between North America and Asia, and lies almost halfway around the world longitudinally from Greenwich, UK. It is near the northwestern end of the Hawaiian archipelago, about one-third of the way from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Tokyo, Japan.
Midway Atoll is an unorganized, unincorporated territory of the United States, and the former home of the Naval Air Facility Midway (former ICAO PMDY). For statistical purposes, Midway is grouped as one of the United States Minor Outlying Islands. It is less than 140 nautical miles (259 km; 161 mi) east of the International Date Line, about 2,800 nautical miles (5,200 km; 3,200 mi) west of San Francisco, and 2,200 nautical miles (4,100 km; 2,500 mi) east of Tokyo. The Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge, encompassing 590,991.50 acres (239,165.77 ha) of land and water (mostly water) in the surrounding area, is administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). Approximately 40 to 60 members of the Service live on the Atoll.

As its name suggests, the Midway Atoll's remote location is about halfway between North America and Asia.
Plane Talking's Sandilands notes the Sand Island "strip is a designated emergency runway for twin-engine airliners flying the north Pacific routes."

Fighter Jets Make Emergency Landing at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge
Midway Runaway Provides Critical Service
A U.S. Marine Corps F/A-18 fighter jet traveling from Honolulu to Iwakuni, Japan, made a precautionary landing on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge early today after experiencing a mechanical problem.
Traveling in a convoy of four F/A-18s and a KC-10 after supporting a Rim of the Pacific exercise, the F/A-18 landed safely at Henderson Airfield on Midway's Sand Island at 10:33 a.m. SST, followed by its escort. The other aircraft circled the Atoll and continued their transit to Wake Island. No one was injured.
"There is never a dull moment on this strategically positioned atoll," said Barry Stieglitz, Supervisor of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's national wildlife refuges in the Pacific.
Since its operation as a national wildlife refuge, Midway has become a landing strip not only for millions of seabirds but for commercial aircraft, such as the Delta 747 that made an emergency landing with 359 passengers on board last year. Military aircraft often request permission to land for refueling purposes, and ships at sea call for emergency medical services and boat and airlift help to provide critical transport via medevac to Honolulu.
"These rescues at sea and on land are a credit to the skills and services provided by the Fish and Wildlife Service staff and its contractor, Defense Base Services, Inc.," Stieglitz said.
In addition to Fish and Wildlife Service funding, money is provided by the Federal Aviation Administration to administer Henderson Airfield on Sand Island. Unfortunately, providing these life-support services may soon be compromised due to a $1.2 million dollar shortfall in Midway's budget beginning October 1.
"The budget has simply not kept up with increases in the cost of fuel and infrastructure maintenance," Stieglitz said.
Located within the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, the Refuge's Henderson Airfield is the responsibility of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with funding support from the Federal Aviation Administration. This year alone the Refuge staff and its Defense Base Services, Inc., contractor successfully managed and served more than 30 landings for refueling or emergency landing purposes.

Krabi island tours (and how to make the best of them)
Island hopping is probably at the top of every Krabi visitor's to-do list: this coastal province boasts more than 100 islands and dramatic rock formations out at sea, which makes for a thrilling boat ride. You'll take in breathtaking colours and scenery before even reaching the white sand beaches and turquoise water!
But you know all that already, right? What you want to know is: what's the best way to visit the Krabi islands? Which Krabi islands are the best / which ones should I visit if I have only 1 or 2 days? How do I avoid the crowds? We are here to provide answers -- and practical, bookable solutions -- to these questions.
1. The itineraries
There are four groups of islands accessible from the mainland coast in Krabi: the Phi Phi Islands; the Hong Islands; the 4 Islands; and James Bond Island. Each group can be covered in a one day tour -- either with a private boat, or as part of an organised tour. Tours combining 2 island groups are available but, due to the distances involved, do cost more and see less of each place.
The Phi Phi Islands (Koh Phi Phi Don, Koh Phi Phi Leh, Bamboo Island, Bida Nok, Bida Nai and Koh Yung) are the Krabi "must-see" -- though this also means they are the most crowded, especially as they are also a Phuket "must-see" -- their midway location means they also get thousands of day trippers from across the water.
The Hong Islands (Koh Hong, Koh Pakbia, Koh Rai, Koh Lahding) are a must for nature lovers as this area offers the best wildlife and snorkeling close to the coast.
The 4 Islands (Koh Poda, Chicken Island, Koh Tub, Koh Mor) are a good, shorter trip for families with younger children, or for anyone if the weather is looking dodgy -- they are the most sheltered of the groups. Decent snorkeling is almost impossible here, however, unless you go on a specific snorkeling trip that will take you away from the high traffic spots.
James Bond Island (Koh Khao Ping Kan, Koh Tapu, Koh Panyi, Khao Kian, Tam Lod), in Phang Nga, is probably the most overrated of the the four, though may be worth it if you take the speedboat tour, so you can enjoy a cruise of Phang Nga Bay.

2. The boats
Which vessel you choose to visit the Krabi islands is a crucial decision. Aside from your own personal preference -- sitting on a wooden bench in a longtail; banging up and down in a speed boat; or relaxing on the deck of a fishing or dive boat -- the type of boat will also determine where you can go, how long you spend in each place and, in some cases, what you can see on the way.
Each has its advantages and disadvantages, as outlined below:
Longtail boat
Pros:
- Usually a small group size on organised tours
- Relatively cheap to charter privately
- Relatively smooth ride
- Can park up on all beaches
Cons:
- Can only go short distances (not, for example, to Phi Phi)
- Noisy
- Possibly difficult to get in and out for those with limited mobility
Speed boat
Pros:
- Fast, can save travel time over long distances
- Can park up on all beaches
Cons:
- Very bumpy, uncomfortable ride -- not suitable for infants, pregnant women or anyone with back problems
- Larger boats (40 seater +) do not allow you to see out during travel
- Expensive to charter
Cruise / dive boat
Pros:
- Very smooth ride
- Superior comfort on board (usually has a covered deck and a sun deck, kitchen, toilet)
- Tour itineraries for fishing / diving usually go to less visited sites
Cons:
- Can't park up on any beaches, only cruise around (may be possible to go ashore by transferring to longtail boat)
- Relatively more expensive
- Is usually more focused on activities (fishing, diving) than sightseeing
3. Join-in or private?
The final decision you need to make is whether to go with a group tour, or with a privately chartered boat. In the case of Phi Phi, the decision will generally be made for you -- it is very expensive to charter a speed boat for the day here, unless you are a group of at least 6 people. Private longtails, however, are generally more affordable and are our recommended way to visit the local islands.

The island sits midway along the Eastern Caribbean archipelago, just a few miles from Martinique to the south and Guadeloupe to the north. Its official name is the Commonwealth of Dominica, which is mostly referenced in official communiqués and to distinguish the island from its northerly Caribbean sister, the Dominican Republic.
Known as "The Nature Island," Dominica's tropical rainforests cover two thirds of the island, and are home to 1,200 plant species. Rivers, lakes, streams, and waterfalls abound, fed by the island's high annual rainfall. Its volcanic physique points to extensive geothermal activity -- even underwater. The Morne Trois Pitons National Park was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the eastern Caribbean.
The island is sparsely populated with 70,000 people inhabiting its 289 square miles. A significant portion of the population lives in and around the capital city of Roseau. About 80% of the population is Roman Catholic. English is the official language, spoken with a melodic French lilt, but a large portion of the population speaks Kwèyòl (Creole), and a few northern villages speak Kokoy.
Dominica offers much more than a stunning nature adventure. Its rich culture is a blend of English, French, African, and Carib peoples. Colorful costumes, music, and pageantry are on display at a host of celebrations, from Carnival to the World Creole Music Festival, and the many independence celebrations around the island. Though Dominica received its independence from Britain on November 3rd 1978, the country commemorates this date with an extended period of cultural celebrations which can last as long as four weeks.
Dominica boasts wonderful examples of Caribbean architecture with a distinctive mix of French, English and Spanish influences. Monumental buildings from colonial times, as well as some old plantation estates, are a must see. A self-guided walking tour through historic Roseau, from the Society for Architectural Preservation and Enhancement (SHAPE) office in Roseau, allows you to experience the rich history and architecture of the capital city.
Dominica is the only Caribbean island with a remaining population of pre-Columbian Carib Indians. Migrating in waves from South America as early as 3,000 B.C., various tribes made Dominica their home, and by 1,000 A.D. were well settled, calling the island "Wai'tukubuli" meaning 'tall is her body' in the Kalinago language. Today, over 2,000 Caribs, properly known as the Kalinago, inhabit a 3,700 acre territory on the northwestern side of the island.
Dominica is served by two airports: Melville Hall (DOM) and Canefield (DCF) Airport. Most visitors to Dominica will arrive through Melville Hall as it is the larger of the two airports and accommodates commercial airlines. Canefield Airport, 15 minutes from the capital city of Roseau, is only 3,100 ft long and serves only smaller aircraft offering intra-regional flights and courier services. Melville Hall, located in the northeastern side of the island, one hour and 20 minutes from the city, features a longer runway and updated terminal.
International flights from US and Europe are connected to the island through hubs in Antigua, Barbados, St. Maarten, Guadeloupe and Martinique. Leeward Island Air Transport (LIAT) usually completes the Dominican leg of these flights and BVI Airways provides service from St. Maarten. LIAT and American Eagle also provide connecting flights to the island out of Puerto Rico.

It sits directly under the 800 steps to the old Customs House perched precariously on the lip of a cliff overlooking the bay and is locally known as The Ladder. Prior to the opening of the road down to Fort Bay, this was the primary point of entry for supplies to the island.

Saba is a Caribbean island and the smallest special municipality (officially public body) of the Netherlands.[4] It consists largely of the potentially active volcano Mount Scenery. Saba has a land area of 13 square kilometers (5.0 sq mi). As of January 2013, the population was 1,991 inhabitants, with a population density of 150 inhabitants per square kilometre (390/sq mi).[1] Its towns and major settlements are The Bottom (the capital), Windwardside, Hell's Gate and St. Johns.
AIRPORT: In 1963, Saba residents built the Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport. This 400-metre (1,300 ft) landing strip is reputed to be the shortest commercial runway in the world, and is restricted. Only trained pilots flying small STOL airliners, such as the Twin Otter and the Britten-Norman Islander may land there, as well as helicopters. Consistent air service from Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius is available through Winair.

AIRPORT: In 1963, Saba residents built the Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport. This 400-metre (1,300 ft) landing strip is reputed to be the shortest commercial runway in the world, and is restricted. Only trained pilots flying small STOL airliners, such as the Twin Otter and the Britten-Norman Islander may land there, as well as helicopters. Consistent air service from Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius is available through Winair.

Heavily bombarded, the ruins on the island serve as a military memorial to American, Filipino, and Japanese soldiers who served or lost their lives on the island. Corregidor is one of the important historic and tourist sites in the country. There is a special veterans tour to cater for special needs and the staff are interested in learning historical accounts from any veterans who served there. There is also a separate tour in Japanese for those that want or need a translator / interpreter. Video re-released 2015 from issues with the old music.

Its important to have photo ID for flights, hotels, and if police ask.
Its common for taxi drivers in Manila to try rip you off. Ask them nicely to put the meter on, or negotiate the price from the start if you know what it costs to your location. Otherwise find another taxi!
Shopping mall culture, locals love the mall for the aircon and to get out of the heat.
Locals often inflate prices for foreigners and tourists. Haggle and negotiate nicely. Be tough, but be respectful and polite about it. Shop around, you can often get a better price.
"Tip" can also mean bribe, so don't be afraid to ask what you're paying for upfront. Locals often do things to try help you, but then expect a tip.
The average basic worker earns PHP 300 a day. So tipping PHP 20 - 50 is fine.

A one week trip to Midway Atoll in March of 2010. The purpose of the trip was to monitor green turtle basking behavior but it is impossible to not observe and film all of the wonderful wildlife on the atoll. -

EVP Experiment-Station Theater on Midway Atoll
This is an EVP session I recorded inside the old Station Theater on Midway Atoll in the Pacific. EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomenon, and it describes the use of electronic recording equipment to record ghost or spirit voices that would not otherwise be audible to human ears. If you listen carefully you'll be able to pick up some of the voices of the past that still resonate within the building, which I was lucky to be able to slightly pick up on my camera's audio. This video is the raw recording and has not been doctored or edited in any way. -

The Battle of Midway in the Pacific Theater of Operations was one of the most important naval battles of World War II.etween 4 and 7 June 1942, only six months after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, and one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea, the United States Navy (USN), under Admirals Chester W. Nimitz, Frank Jack Fletcher, and Raymond A. Spruance decisively defeated an attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN), under Admirals Isoroku Yamamoto, Chuichi Nagumo, and Nobutake Kondo on Midway Atoll, inflicting irreparable damage on the Japanese fleet. -

The clumsy Gooney Birds of Midway Island were always considered part of the atoll's charm. But the birds posed real hazards to Navy aircraft, and the birds had to be cleared from the runway so planes could land during WWII. In the post-war era, the increasing importance of Midway as a way station and Cold War outpost led to astonishingly large numbers of incidents with birds and aircraft. While at first blush this might not seem too serious, there was a very real financial cost to so many aborted takeoffs and damage caused by bird strikes. Plus, lives were on the line and not just those of humans. This is an EVP session I recorded inside the old Station Theater on Midway Atoll in the Pacific. EVP stands for Electronic Voice Phenomenon, and it describes the use of electronic recording equipment to record ghost or spirit voices that would not otherwise be audible to human ears. If you listen carefully you'll be able to pick up some of the voices of the past that still resonate within the building, which I was lucky to be able to slightly pick up on my camera's audio.

From the first prototype delivery to the U.S. Navy in 1940, to final delivery in 1953 to the French, 12,571 F4U Corsairs were manufactured by Vought, in 16 separate models, in the longest production run of any piston-engined fighter in U.S. history (1942--53).

The airfield now provides access to Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge - the sole "window" into the rich resources of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument (established in 2006).

But the birds posed real hazards to Navy aircraft, and the birds had to be cleared from the runway so planes could land during WWII. In the post-war era, the increasing importance of Midway as a way station and Cold War outpost led to astonishingly large numbers of incidents with birds and aircraft. While at first blush this might not seem too serious, there was a very real financial cost to so many aborted takeoffs and damage caused by bird strikes. In the end that did not happen and the base today is abandoned, and the Gooneys are still there. (One fun aspect of this film, is that the health and safety of the Gooneys is never taken into account, nor are any environmental considerations. It just wasn't the right era!)
