Pacific Documentation - Lost World of The Pacific - Polynesian Islands Documentary
Polynesia is characterized by a small amount of land spread over a very large portion of the mid and southern Pacific Ocean. Most Polynesian islands and archipelagos, including the Hawaiian Islands and Samoa, are composed of volcanic islands built by hotspots. New Zealand, Norfolk Island, and Ouvéa, the Polynesian outlier near New Caledonia, are the unsubmerged portions of the largely sunken continent of Zealandia. Zealandia is believed to have mostly sunk by 23 m.y.a. and resurfaced geologically recently due to a change in the movements of the Pacific Plate in relation to the Indo-Australian plate, which served to uplift the New Zealand portion. At first, the Pacific plate was subducted under the Australian plate. The Alpine Fault that traverses the South Island is currently a transform fault while the convergent plate boundary from the North Island northwards is a subduction zone called the Kermadec-Tonga Subduction Zone. The volcanism associated with this subduction zone is the origin of the Kermadec and Tongan island archipelagos.
Out of about 117,000 or 118,000 square miles (300,000 or 310,000 km2) of land, over 103,000 square miles (270,000 km2) are within New Zealand; the Hawaiian archipelago comprises about half the remainder. The Zealandia continent has approximately 1,400,000 square miles (3,600,000 km2) of continental shelf. The oldest rocks in the region are found in New Zealand and are believed to be about 510 million years old. The oldest Polynesian rocks outside of Zealandia are to be found in the Hawaiian Emperor Seamount Chain, and are 80 million years old.
Geographic area
Polynesia is generally defined as the islands within the Polynesian Triangle, although there are some islands that are inhabited by Polynesian people situated outside the Polynesian Triangle. Geographically, the Polynesian Triangle is drawn by connecting the points of Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. The other main island groups located within the Polynesian Triangle are Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Tokelau, Niue, Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia.
There are also small Polynesian settlements in Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, the Caroline Islands, and in Vanuatu. An island group with strong Polynesian cultural traits outside of this great triangle is Rotuma, situated north of Fiji. The people of Rotuma have many common Polynesian traits but speak a non-Polynesian language. Some of the Lau Islands to the southeast of Fiji have strong historic and cultural links with Tonga.
However, in essence, Polynesia is a cultural term referring to one of the three parts of Oceania (the others being Micronesia and Melanesia). DNA studies suggest that the indigenous Pacific Islands population migrated from Taiwan thousands of years ago and dispersed throughout the region into three distinct cultural groups.

Après un retard de presque un an, voici le montage des vacances que j'ai passé en août dernier avec mes grands-parents et mon cousin !
Pour la petite histoire, je suis née à Tahiti et j'y ai vécu pendant 2 ans ! Malheureusement j'étais bien trop jeune pour m'en souvenir, mes grands-parents m'on donc emmenée 2 fois la-bas pour me faire découvrir, et c'était les plus belles vacances de ma vie :)
On a visité les Iles Marquises (Hiva oa et Nuku Hiva), Rangiroa et Bora-Bora ! On a été à Tahiti uniquement pour quelques nuits pour faire la correspondance entre certaines îles !
On a bien sûr visité Tahiti, mais l'année d'avant :)

After the success that you have given to my first video on Polynesian dance, many of you have invited me to publish a second compilation.
Also this second video are collected some of most beautiful dances of Polynesia, where the dancers are authentic wonderful girls of Tahiti and many other Islands of the great and wonderful archipelago .
Fans of belly dance will assess the similarities between the two dances and the different parts of the body involved.

Polynesia is generally defined as the islands within the Polynesian Triangle, although there are some islands that are inhabited by Polynesian people situated outside the Polynesian Triangle. Geographically, the Polynesian Triangle is drawn by connecting the points of Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. The other main island groups located within the Polynesian Triangle are Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Tokelau, Niue, Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia. Though distinct in their dance styles, the islands of Polynesia share certain similarities in many aspects of their respective cultures, including dance.
Many Polynesian dance styles mainly use the movements of the hips. The most famous examples of these types are the hula from Hawaii and Tahitian dance from French Polynesia. All forms use the arms and hands as a way of communicating. Polynesian men and women dance and take part in performances and dance as a social activity, though choreography for males and females are often different from one another.
Abolished in 1820 by the British puritan missionaries, the Polynesian dance made a timid come back at early 20th century but kept closed in restraint during the 50 following years. The costumes only allowed to see the face, the feet and the hands ; the gestures and attitudes were fixed... A renewal only appeared in the second half of the 20th century, but unfortunately, cultural losses were huge.
Opening and codification were the two words that best summarized the evolution of the Polynesian dance since the 1950′. Step by step, the pressure exercised by strong personalities like Madeleine MOUA allowed to raise interdictions and to attend a renewal of this art, deprived of any expression for long. A wave of steps and gestures seeking and codification as executed before the Europeans arrival started, but it was not easy.
Dance styles:
Four type of dances are presented during the Heiva contest : the ote'a, the aparima, the hivinau and the pa'o'a.
" The ote'a " is the more codified of the Tahitian traditional dances. Originally it was reserved to men only but today it is also danced by women and is characterized by wide and abrupt moves and a quick and jerky rhythm.
"The aparima" is the dance of gestures par excellence : hands describe a story thanks to a large scale of symbolic gestures (the sea, birds flight, voice...). Accompanied or not by singing dancers, the aparima can be danced with a vegetal costume in a daily life descriptive scene, or with beautiful cloth dresses that let you guess the vahine's curves.
"The hivinau" is the easiest and technically the less demanding of the Tahitian dances although not the less visually impressive. .
"The pa'o'a" is a dance traditionally linked to tapa fabrication : sat on the ground, women used to beat bark in time and to accompany themselves with singings in order to break the monotony or to give themselves courage. Nowadays, the pa'o'a -only accompanied by the rhythmic of the percussions- is interpreted by agroup of dancers sitting on the ground and slapping their thighs with energy and by a solo dancer or a couple of dancers

French Polynesia is divided into 5 groups of islands: The Society Islands archipelago composed of the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands, the Tuamotu Archipelago, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands and the Austral Islands. Among its 118 islands and atolls, 67 are inhabited. Tahiti, which is located within the Society Islands, is the most populous island and the seat of the capital of the collectivity, Pape'ete. It has more than 68% of the population of the islands in 2012. Although not an integral part of its territory, Clipperton Island was administered from French Polynesia until 2007.

Dear Friends, After the success that you have given to my first video on Polynesian dance, many of you have invited me to publish a second compilation. Also this second video are collected some of most beautiful dances of Polynesia, where the dancers are authentic wonderful girls of Tahiti and many other Islands of the great and wonderful archipelago . Fans of belly dance will assess the similarities between the two dances and the different parts of the body involved. I wish you a good view and above all a happy trip to the islands of Polynesian Paradise! Polynesia is generally defined as the islands within the Polynesian Triangle, although there are some islands that are inhabited by Polynesian people situated outside the Polynesian Triangle. Geographically, the Polynesian Triangle is drawn by connecting the points of Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. The other main island groups located within the Polynesian Triangle are Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Tokelau, Niue, Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia. Though distinct in their dance styles, the islands of Polynesia share certain similarities in many aspects of their respective cultures, including dance. Many Polynesian dance styles mainly use the movements of the hips. The most famous examples of these types are the hula from Hawaii and Tahitian dance from French Polynesia. All forms use the arms and hands as a way of communicating. Polynesian men and women dance and take part in performances and dance as a social activity, though choreography for males and females are often different from one another. Abolished in 1820 by the British puritan missionaries, the Polynesian dance made a timid come back at early 20th century but kept closed in restraint during the 50 following years. The costumes only allowed to see the face, the feet and the hands ; the gestures and attitudes were fixed... A renewal only appeared in the second half of the 20th century, but unfortunately, cultural losses were huge. Opening and codification were the two words that best summarized the evolution of the Polynesian dance since the 1950′. Step by step, the pressure exercised by strong personalities like Madeleine MOUA allowed to raise interdictions and to attend a renewal of this art, deprived of any expression for long. A wave of steps and gestures seeking and codification as executed before the Europeans arrival started, but it was not easy. Dance styles: Four type of dances are presented during the Heiva contest : the ote'a, the aparima, the hivinau and the pa'o'a. " The ote'a " is the more codified of the Tahitian traditional dances. Originally it was reserved to men only but today it is also danced by women and is characterized by wide and abrupt moves and a quick and jerky rhythm. "The aparima" is the dance of gestures par excellence : hands describe a story thanks to a large scale of symbolic gestures (the sea, birds flight, voice...). Accompanied or not by singing dancers, the aparima can be danced with a vegetal costume in a daily life descriptive scene, or with beautiful cloth dresses that let you guess the vahine's curves. "The hivinau" is the easiest and technically the less demanding of the Tahitian dances although not the less visually impressive. . "The pa'o'a" is a dance traditionally linked to tapa fabrication : sat on the ground, women used to beat bark in time and to accompany themselves with singings in order to break the monotony or to give themselves courage. Nowadays, the pa'o'a -only accompanied by the rhythmic of the percussions- is interpreted by agroup of dancers sitting on the ground and slapping their thighs with energy and by a solo dancer or a couple of dancers Замечательный полинезийские танцы: величайших выступления! The Alpine Fault that traverses the South Island is currently a transform fault while the convergent plate boundary from the North Island northwards is a subduction zone called the Kermadec-Tonga Subduction Zone. The volcanism associated with this subduction zone is the origin of the Kermadec and Tongan island archipelagos.
Out of about 117,000 or 118,000 square miles (300,000 or 310,000 km2) of land, over 103,000 square miles (270,000 km2) are within New Zealand; the Hawaiian archipelago comprises about half the remainder. The Zealandia continent has approximately 1,400,000 square miles (3,600,000 km2) of continental shelf. The oldest rocks in the region are found in New Zealand and are believed to be about 510 million years old. The oldest Polynesian rocks outside of Zealandia are to be found in the Hawaiian Emperor Seamount Chain, and are 80 million years old.

The people of Rotuma have many common Polynesian traits but speak a non-Polynesian language. Some of the Lau Islands to the southeast of Fiji have strong historic and cultural links with Tonga.
However, in essence, Polynesia is a cultural term referring to one of the three parts of Oceania (the others being Micronesia and Melanesia). DNA studies suggest that the indigenous Pacific Islands population migrated from Taiwan thousands of years ago and dispersed throughout the region into three distinct cultural groups.

Après un retard de presque un an, voici le montage des vacances que j'ai passé en août dernier avec mes grands-parents et mon cousin !
Pour la petite histoire, je suis née à Tahiti et j'y ai vécu pendant 2 ans ! Malheureusement j'étais bien trop jeune pour m'en souvenir, mes grands-parents m'on donc emmenée 2 fois la-bas pour me faire découvrir, et c'était les plus belles vacances de ma vie :)
On a visité les Iles Marquises (Hiva oa et Nuku Hiva), Rangiroa et Bora-Bora ! On a été à Tahiti uniquement pour quelques nuits pour faire la correspondance entre certaines îles !
On a bien sûr visité Tahiti, mais l'année d'avant :)

After the success that you have given to my first video on Polynesian dance, many of you have invited me to publish a second compilation.
Also this second video are collected some of most beautiful dances of Polynesia, where the dancers are authentic wonderful girls of Tahiti and many other Islands of the great and wonderful archipelago .
Fans of belly dance will assess the similarities between the two dances and the different parts of the body involved.

Polynesia is generally defined as the islands within the Polynesian Triangle, although there are some islands that are inhabited by Polynesian people situated outside the Polynesian Triangle. Geographically, the Polynesian Triangle is drawn by connecting the points of Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. The other main island groups located within the Polynesian Triangle are Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Tokelau, Niue, Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia. Though distinct in their dance styles, the islands of Polynesia share certain similarities in many aspects of their respective cultures, including dance.
Many Polynesian dance styles mainly use the movements of the hips. The most famous examples of these types are the hula from Hawaii and Tahitian dance from French Polynesia. All forms use the arms and hands as a way of communicating. Polynesian men and women dance and take part in performances and dance as a social activity, though choreography for males and females are often different from one another.
Abolished in 1820 by the British puritan missionaries, the Polynesian dance made a timid come back at early 20th century but kept closed in restraint during the 50 following years. The costumes only allowed to see the face, the feet and the hands ; the gestures and attitudes were fixed... A renewal only appeared in the second half of the 20th century, but unfortunately, cultural losses were huge.
Opening and codification were the two words that best summarized the evolution of the Polynesian dance since the 1950′. Step by step, the pressure exercised by strong personalities like Madeleine MOUA allowed to raise interdictions and to attend a renewal of this art, deprived of any expression for long. A wave of steps and gestures seeking and codification as executed before the Europeans arrival started, but it was not easy.
Dance styles:
Four type of dances are presented during the Heiva contest : the ote'a, the aparima, the hivinau and the pa'o'a.
" The ote'a " is the more codified of the Tahitian traditional dances. Originally it was reserved to men only but today it is also danced by women and is characterized by wide and abrupt moves and a quick and jerky rhythm.
"The aparima" is the dance of gestures par excellence : hands describe a story thanks to a large scale of symbolic gestures (the sea, birds flight, voice...). Accompanied or not by singing dancers, the aparima can be danced with a vegetal costume in a daily life descriptive scene, or with beautiful cloth dresses that let you guess the vahine's curves.
"The hivinau" is the easiest and technically the less demanding of the Tahitian dances although not the less visually impressive. .
"The pa'o'a" is a dance traditionally linked to tapa fabrication : sat on the ground, women used to beat bark in time and to accompany themselves with singings in order to break the monotony or to give themselves courage. Nowadays, the pa'o'a -only accompanied by the rhythmic of the percussions- is interpreted by agroup of dancers sitting on the ground and slapping their thighs with energy and by a solo dancer or a couple of dancers

On a technical side, this was all all shot on the Canon 5D Mark II.and Canon 6D. Most of the shots were done with the Canon 16-35mm 2.8 L Series lens. Also 50mm, and 200mm,.

The smooth shots were done with a Glidecam HD-4000. I've been shooting with Glidecam for the last 2 years and I really love it.
Especially it is easy to take him everywhere, even if you travel to the other side of this beautiful planet :)

Huahine measures 16 km (10 mi) in length, with a maximum width of 13 km (8 mi). It is made up of two main islands surrounded by a fringing coral reef with several islets, or motu. Huahine Nui (Big Huahine) lies to the north and Huahine Iti (Little Huahine) to the south. The two islands are separated by a few hundred yards of water and joined by a sandspit at low tide. A small bridge was built to connect Huahine Nui and Huahine Iti.
In the northwest of Huahine Nui lies a 375 hectares (926.65 acres) brackish lake known as Lac Fauna Nui (Lac Maeva). This lake is all that remains of the ancient atoll lagoon. Air transportation is available via Huahine airport, located on the northern shore of Huahine Nui.

The term Polynesia refers to a cultural and geographical area in the Pacific Ocean, bound by what is commonly referred to as the Polynesian Triangle, which consists of Hawai'i in the north, New Zealand in the southwest, and Easter Island in the southeast. Thousands of islands are scattered throughout this area, most of which are currently included in one of the modern island states of American Samoa, Cook Islands, French Polynesia, Hawai'i, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Tokelau, Tuvalu, and Wallis and Futuna.the third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Polynesia greatly expands on the previous editions through a chronology, an introductory essay, an expansive bibliography, and over 400 cross-referenced dictionary entries on significant persons, events, places, organizations, and other aspects of Polynesian history from the earliest times to the present. Appendixes of the major islands and atolls within Polynesia, the rulers and administrators of the 13 major island states, and basic demographic information of those states are also included.

It is a consequence of living only 100 km away from the island of Moruroa, where France has tested 193 atom bombs for 30 years. Several of their family members are sick and Moruroa can soon collapse, which can lead to a tsunami likely to drown all of them. Vive La France is a personal and intimate story about harvesting the consequences of the French atomic program.

The waters off the Rangiroa Atoll in French Polynesia are home to an astonishing creature, a true survivor from an age when dinosaurs roamed the Earth around 400 million years ago: the great hammerhead shark. At up to 6 metres in length, they are imposing predators with an array of incredible sensory organs housed in their distinctive hammer-shaped heads. But there are still many unanswered questions about these mysterious creatures.
Marine biologist Dr Johan Mourier of the University of Perpignan is dedicated to exploring the behaviour and genetic make-up of great hammerhead sharks to help preserve this endangered species in the wild. In the last 25 years alone, their world population has shrunk by about 80%. Yet very little is known about them.
Dr Mourier wants to get to the bottom of the sharks’ migratory patterns, as well as their social behaviour. By tagging individual sharks with GPS locators, he hopes to establish where the animals go, what their migration routes are and where they are most threatened. It is becoming increasingly clear that sharks tend to move very quickly and deliberately between different fishing grounds. Is this also true for the Great Hammerheads? Are changes in these traditional fishing grounds threatening the hammerheads’ survival?
The extreme shyness of these mighty predators makes them difficult research subjects. To make matters worse, great hammerheads are loners, unlike their common hammerhead cousins. And since tagging is usually done by using airtanks, it is very difficult to approach these shy individuals.
This is where Frederic’s silent and calm approach underwater makes all the difference: Dr Mourier is working together with Fred to get closer to the animals than ever before. This gives him not only the chance to study their behaviour up close, he is even able to select individuals for tagging to reflect a cross-section of the population. The researchers are able to track the tagged sharks and plot their migratory patterns for the very first time.
For Frederic, this undertaking is not only exciting, it is seriously dangerous and requires months of preparation and training. Approaching a predator like this one in open water is not for the faint-hearted, especially since it is thought that sharks are able to ‘feel fear’ and respond to it aggressively.
On Frederic and Christian’s arrival in Papete, the capital of French Polynesia, Dr Mourier diligently highlights the risks and pitfalls of trying to dive with great hammerhead sharks: they are powerful predators, not to be underestimated.
Frederic and Christian have their work cut out. They have to plan each dive meticulously – not least how Christian and his diving equipment can stay close enough to Frederic to document his findings without disturbing the sharks. Minimising potential risks is also top of their agenda. Test dives perfect their technique and illustrate just how abundant and stunning the local marine life is. They come across many shark species: Silvertips, oceanic white tips, grey reef sharks, lemmon sharks and many others. Dr. Mourir shows and explains their nursery: bays with hundreds of baby sharks.
No matter which shark species Frederic wants to approach, he cannot afford to panic. He must remain calm and in control – instinctive reactions like sudden, hecticmovements could be detrimental. Loose control, and it could cost him his life. The tagging and sampling process in itself is even more dangerous than the initial approach: Frederic has to use a harpoon to dart the sharks from their immediate vicinity. The tagging could be interpreted as a threat and prompt an attack.
But luck is on their side. After many days Fred finally can set the tags near the dorsal fin of two great hammerheads.
This is the crucial moment Dr Mourier has been waiting for: the tags will give him a unique chance to track the sharks’ movements. A huge success for Frederic, Christian and the research team.
