The American Optometric Association (AOA), founded in 1898, represents approximately 37,000 doctors of optometry, optometry students and paraoptometric assistants and technicians in the USA.
The AOA has offices in St. Louis, Missouri (the headquarters) and Alexandria, Virginia, employing approximately 100 people. It counts nearly half of practicing optometrists in the USA as its members. Serving patients in nearly 6,500 communities across the country, optometrists are the only eye doctors in 3,500 communities and provide two-thirds of all primary eye care in the United States. The AOA is a federation, with US state, student and armed forces optometric associations representing members at the state or affiliate level. The Association also has four special interest sections: The Contact Lens and Cornea Section, the Vision Rehabilitation Section, the Sports Vision Section and the Paraoptometric Section.

One of the most important things parents can do to help their child succeed is to take them for a comprehensive eye exam, before they enter school. The AOA recommends a complete eye exam for children at 6 months, 3, and 5 years old.

The American Optometric Association's Optometry's Meeting Poster Session was amazing! There were 85 of the best clinical case reports, case series, and clinically relevant research covering a wide variety of topics from contact lenses to AMD; from strabismus and amblyopia to vision rehabilitation; and from traumatic brain injury to optics. As Chair of the AOA Poster/Abstract Review Committee, I strongly recommend all optometrists submit one or more posters for next year. The guidelines are here http://www.optometrysmeeting.org/education/poster-sessions If you have questions email me at dmaino@ico.edu and I'd be happy to assist you through the submission process.
