Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, more commonly known simply as Chamonix (formerly also spelled Chamounix), is a commune in the Haute-Savoie département in the Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. It was the site of the first Winter Olympics in 1924. The commune's population of around 9,800 ranks 865th within the country of France. Situated near the massive peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges and most notably the Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France and is known as the "gateway to the European Cascades." Let's take a trip to the wonderful ski town of Chamonix, France in this episode of Aboard the Guiding Light. This town is at the base of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Afterwards we are going to take one of the longest and highest cable cars (gondola) up Mont Blanc to Aiguille du Midi. From here we will see the building, Step Into The Void, mountaineering trails, a museum, and the Matterhorn off in the distance. We could get down by paragliding, skiing, parachute skiing, or base jumping, but I chose to take the cable car down halfway and hike the rest of the way while stopping at a little Swiss cottage for hot coco and soup.

The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc Massif in the French Alps. The cable car which starts from Chamonix (France) to the summit, the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, was built in 1955 and held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3,842 m.
From the top station (at 3842m) the view of the Alps is incredible. The top station of the Aiguille du Midi has several terraces where visitors can take in the spectacular views of the Swiss, French and Italian Alps. On a clear day it is possible to see the Matterhorn, Monta Rosa and the Grand Combin.
An elevator inside the rock rises the final 42m to the top terrace at 3842m. This is the closest you can get to the Mont Blanc without climbing!

Chamonix is a famous resort in the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc. Also it is credited with hosting the First Winter Olympic games in 1924.
Situated near the massive peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges and most notably the Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France and is known as the "gateway to the European Cascades." The north side of the summit of Mont Blanc, and therefore the summit itself are part of the village of Chamonix. To the south side, the situation is different depending on the country. Italy considers that the border passes through the top. France considers that the boundary runs along the rocky Tournette under the summit cap, placing it entirely in French territory.
The Chamonix commune is well known and loved by skiers and mountain enthusiasts of all types, and via the cable car lift to the Aiguille du Midi it is possible to access the world famous off-piste skirun of the Vallée Blanche.
Chamonix is a popular winter sports resort town in France. As the highest European mountain west of Russia, Mont Blanc holds a special allure for mountain climbers, and Mark Twight described the town as "the death-sport capital of the world" because it is a base for almost all types of outdoor activity, especially their more extreme variants, such as ice climbing, rock climbing, extreme skiing, paragliding, rafting, canyoning and Wingsuit flying.
In the summer months Chamonix is a mecca for alpine mountaineers, drawn to the area by challenges like the north, west and south-west faces of the Dru, the Frendo Spur on the Aiguille du Midi, the north face of the Grandes Jorasses and the massive face climbs on the south side of Mont Blanc.

It was the site of the first Winter Olympics in 1924. The commune's population of around 9,800 ranks 865th within the country of France. Situated near the massive peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges and most notably the Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France and is known as the "gateway to the European Cascades." Let's take a trip to the wonderful ski town of Chamonix, France in this episode of Aboard the Guiding Light. This town is at the base of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Afterwards we are going to take one of the longest and highest cable cars (gondola) up Mont Blanc to Aiguille du Midi. From here we will see the building, Step Into The Void, mountaineering trails, a museum, and the Matterhorn off in the distance. We could get down by paragliding, skiing, parachute skiing, or base jumping, but I chose to take the cable car down halfway and hike the rest of the way while stopping at a little Swiss cottage for hot coco and soup. The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc Massif in the French Alps. The cable car which starts from Chamonix (France) to the summit, the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, was built in 1955 and held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3,842 m. From the top station (at 3842m) the view of the Alps is incredible. The top station of the Aiguille du Midi has several terraces where visitors can take in the spectacular views of the Swiss, French and Italian Alps. Chamonix is a famous resort in the French Alps at the foot of Mont Blanc. Also it is credited with hosting the First Winter Olympic games in 1924. Situated near the massive peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges and most notably the Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France and is known as the "gateway to the European Cascades." The north side of the summit of Mont Blanc, and therefore the summit itself are part of the village of Chamonix. To the south side, the situation is different depending on the country. Italy considers that the border passes through the top. France considers that the boundary runs along the rocky Tournette under the summit cap, placing it entirely in French territory. Let's take a trip to the wonderful ski town of Chamonix, France in this episode of Aboard the Guiding Light. This town is at the base of Mont Blanc in the French Alps. Afterwards we are going to take one of the longest and highest cable cars (gondola) up Mont Blanc to Aiguille du Midi. From here we will see the building, Step Into The Void, mountaineering trails, a museum, and the Matterhorn off in the distance. We could get down by paragliding, skiing, parachute skiing, or base jumping, but I chose to take the cable car down halfway and hike the rest of the way while stopping at a little Swiss cottage for hot coco and soup.

The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc Massif in the French Alps. The cable car which starts from Chamonix (France) to the summit, the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, was built in 1955 and held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3,842 m.
From the top station (at 3842m) the view of the Alps is incredible. The top station of the Aiguille du Midi has several terraces where visitors can take in the spectacular views of the Swiss, French and Italian Alps. On a clear day it is possible to see the Matterhorn, Monta Rosa and the Grand Combin.
An elevator inside the rock rises the final 42m to the top terrace at 3842m. This is the closest you can get to the Mont Blanc without climbing!

Vallée Blanche 2015 à Chamonix
L'expérience "ski" la plus intense et émotionnelle de ma vie sans nul doute ! La mythique Vallée Blanche est un itinéraire hors-piste glaciaire oscillant entre 3842 et 1800 mètres d'altitude (sous Montenvers). Elle est entourée de sommets prestigieux comme le Mont Blanc, la Dent du Géant, les Grandes Jorasses, l'Aiguille Verte, les Drus... Ce 24 janvier 2015, l'arête de l'Aiguille du Midi n'était toujours pas équipée, ni donc sécurisée. Crampons et encordement obligatoires ! 4 heures de descente dans une neige changeante, tantôt poudreuse, tantôt croûtée puis tassée. C'est physique ! C'est sans compter le manque d'oxygène qui fatigue et la longue descente de l'arête quelque peu impressionnante il faut l'avouer et au cours de laquelle je pense avoir malheureusement grillé 20 à 30% de mon ca...

The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc Massif in the French Alps. The cable car which starts from Chamonix (France) to the summit, the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, was built in 1955 and held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3,842 m. From the top station (at 3842m) the view of the Alps is incredible. Chamonix Storm Riding
I didn't have any film commitment last week so I took a chance and did something I had been waiting to do since last december; pack the car, go to Cham and catch up with the characters over there. The weather wasn't looking too good but everyone I spoke to told me to make my way and "see what happens". I also had new planks from Armada to try out so I figured, even if it was stormy, I could still go for a couple turns. Turns out I had an amazing three days! Fresh track on the north face of the Aiguille and hot lapping Les Grands Montets. A huge thanks to Andreas, Bjarne, Tof, Tom & Ben for letting me tag along, for setting up bomber anchors and opening routes! Chamonix is a stunning and vibrant mountain town with centuries of mountaineering history behind it. The town is bustling with excited skiers and climbers and it has a huge variety of fantastic restaurants and a lively nightlife with lots of great bars and nightclubs.
Chamonix boasts 4 fantastic ski areas, Brevent-Flégère being the largest. It's accessed right from the town and the ski area is great for intermediates with lots of blues and easy reds. The Balme ski area is located right at the northern end of the valley and is great for families with children learning to ski and less experienced skiers. Next you have the Grands Montets which is the highest and the most challenging ski area in Chamonix with lots of steeper reds, blacks and some blues and it's located on the Northern side of the valley and accessed from Argentiere. Finally you have Les Houches where, despite hosting the Kandahar FIS downhill skiing every year, you'll find great skiing for families with lots of picturesque tree runs and fantastic views over to St Gervais and up the valley to Chamonix.
Anyone heading to Chamonix must never forget the Aiguille du Midi. It's the highest cable car in Europe and is accessed right from the town. It offers the most stunning views over to Mont Blanc and across the Alps to Geneva and in the other direction across the valley into Italy. It's not a ski area as such, but a 22km off-piste itinerary where intermediate skiers can, if accompanied by a guide, ski the Valley Blanche.

The Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m) is a mountain in the Mont Blanc Massif in the French Alps. The cable car which starts from Chamonix (France) to the summit, the Téléphérique de l'Aiguille du Midi, was built in 1955 and held the title of the world's highest cable car for about two decades. It still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 m to 3,842 m.
From the top station (at 3842m) the view of the Alps is incredible. The top station of the Aiguille du Midi has several terraces where visitors can take in the spectacular views of the Swiss, French and Italian Alps. On a clear day it is possible to see the Matterhorn, Monta Rosa and the Grand Combin.
An elevator inside the rock rises the final 42m to the top terrace at 3842m. This is the closest you can get to the Mont Blanc without climbing!

A vlog of my recent trip to Chamonix in France with my MBA friends from INSEAD! We spent 3 days skiing in Chamonix over the long weekend just before our exams started. Very responsible of us, right?
You’ll notice that the clips are a mixture of hand-held shots from my micro four thirds camera and other shots from a GoPro (special mention to Vas and Thomas for the GoPro footage!). I think the video is a fun document of our time on the slopes without any explanation needed :)

I didn't have any film commitment last week so I took a chance and did something I had been waiting to do since last december; pack the car, go to Cham and catch up with the characters over there.
The weather wasn't looking too good but everyone I spoke to told me to make my way and "see what happens".
I also had new planks from Armada to try out so I figured, even if it was stormy, I could still go for a couple turns. Turns out I had an amazing three days! Fresh track on the north face of the Aiguille and hot lapping Les Grands Montets.
A huge thanks to Andreas, Bjarne, Tof, Tom & Ben for letting me tag along, for setting up bomber anchors and opening routes!
