Bosnia protesters attack presidency building Protesters smash windows and set ablaze section of government building in Sarajevo on third day of demonstrations. Protesters have set fire to a section of the presidency building in the Bosnian capital city of Sarajevo as the anti-governments have spread across the country. AP news agency reported that central Sarajevo was in chaos on Friday night with buildings and cars burning and riot police in full gear chasing protesters and pounding batons against their shields to get the crowd to disperse. At least 200 people were injured in Friday's clashes, according to AP. Also on Friday, protesters set fire to a local government building in the northern town of Tuzla, the hotspot of violence that began on Tuesday. Authorities in Tuzla had ordered schools to cancel classes earlier in the day. AFP news agency reported that about 100 hooded men were seen storming the building with flames, and thick smoke billowing from the first floor windows a short while after. Protesters outside prevented two fire engines from reaching the building. At least 6,000 people took to the streets in Tuzla, according to Reuters news agency, who also reported that protesters lobbed stones at police in Sarajevo. Al Jazeera's Alma Brnicanin reported that demonstrators gathered in the northern city of Bihac on Friday. Tuzla's protests spread to other parts of the country on Thursday and have morphed into widespread discontent in an election year about unemployment and rampant corruption. Police on Thursday fired teargas to drive back several thousand people throwing stones, eggs and flares at a local government building in Tuzla, once the industrial heart of Bosnia's north, which has been hit hard by factory closures in recent years. A strong police contingent dispersed the crowd in the evening after protesters started rioting, smashing shop windows and setting garbage bins on fire, a Tuzla police spokesman said. The town's emergency service said it admitted 104 police officers who were seriously hurt, and 30 civilians with lighter injuries. Hundreds of people turned out in solidarity protests in Sarajevo and the towns of Zenica, Bihac and Mostar. In Sarajevo, protesters clashed with police who had blocked traffic in the city centre. Four officers were taken to hospital, officials said. Public resentment The prime minister of Bosnia's autonomous Bosniak-Croat federation, where the protests took place, held an emergency meeting with regional security ministers and prosecutors. "We put on one side the workers who were left without basic rights, such as pensions and health benefits ... , and on the other side all hooligans who used this situation to create chaos," Prime Minister Nermin Niksic said after the meeting. "We will not come to the solution by destroying property, damaging vehicles and windows and fighting the police," Niksic said. The protests highlight public resentment over the political bickering that has stifled governance and economic development since the 1992-1995 war in the Balkan country. The protesters were initially made up mainly of workers laid off when state-owned companies that were sold off collapsed under private ownership. They have been joined by thousands of jobless people and youths. At 27.5 percent, Bosnia's unemployment rate is the highest in the Balkans.- published: 08 Feb 2014

Hellenic Presidency of the Council of the EU -Logo Presentation Animation Gr2014EU 720p
Τhe Logo of the Greek Presidency "Europe, Our Common Quest" Each country holding the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union selects its own presidency logo, which serves as an integral visual symbol for the Presidency: a defining feature of each Presidency's identity and a statement conveying its message to Europe and the world. The logo and the associated graphic design work feature in the Presidency's publications and online presence, in decorations in the Justus Lipsius building in Brussels and in venues that host official presidency events. The Greek Presidency logo is austere and concise, extending a note of realistic optimism. It depicts a sailboat in full sail, formed by the initials of the European Union. It aspires to unite common European values and Greece's unique identity, the beginning of the continent's union and its future course, the solid principles that formed our past with our common aspirations for the future. The symbolic background of the logo is the sea: a fundamental element of Greek identity, but also a pivotal component of Europe's past and future. The sea has historically united people and is nowadays a generator of growth and jobs across Europe thus, forming a horizontal thematic running through the Greek Presidency's priorities. Against this background, the individual motifs forming the logo illustrate the Greek land's indented terrain and coastline while, the "semicircle" represents the Parliament and the ancient theatre, cradles of Europe's democratic traditions, institutional equality and our common cultural heritage. The sailboat is at the forefront of the logo's narrative power: a symbol of exploration and transition, but also of communication and unity. As such, it aspires to relay our decision to sail together towards a common future overcoming hardships and storms. The journey is the symbolic essence of the logo's narration: a shared course of democracy and participation, a common quest for prosperity through growth and employment, a vessel of mobility and security for the future. These ideals forged our past and are now the common inspiration that leads our course. This is the Greek Presidency's message to Europe and to the world: Europe is our common quest and journey -- united we sail further. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs commissioned the Greek creative design group Beetroot to design the logo and the associated visual identity which were unveiled on 25 November 2013. Bosnia: counting the cost of three days of violent protests
Residents in Sarajevo have been surveying the damage after protesters set fire to government buildings in the Bosnian capital. While the three day anti‐government demonstrations which spread across the country have much popular support, the destruction of institutional buildings is being blamed on a minority of hooligans. For those who fought in the 1992-95 war and saved the presidency building it was hard to understand the destruction. Dedovic Mirsad was a soldier in the Bosnian army during ... Christopher Hitchens on Thomas Jefferson: Enlightenment, Nation Building, and Slavery (2005)
Thomas Jefferson (April 13, 1743 (April 2, 1743 O.S.) -- July 4, 1826) was an American Founding Father, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776) and the third President of the United States (1801--1809). At the beginning of the American Revolution, he served in the Continental Congress, representing Virginia and then served as a wartime Governor of Virginia (1779--1781). Just after the war ended, from mid-1784 Jefferson served as a diplomat, stationed in Paris. In May 1785, he became the United States Minister to France. Jefferson was the first United States Secretary of State (1790--1793) serving under President George Washington. With his close friend James Madison he organized the Democratic-Republican Party, and subsequently resigned from Washington's cabinet. Elected Vice President in 1796, when he came in second to John Adams of the Federalists, Jefferson opposed Adams and with Madison secretly wrote the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, which attempted to nullify the Alien and Sedition Acts. Elected president in what Jefferson called the Revolution of 1800, he oversaw the purchase of the vast Louisiana Territory from France (1803), and sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804--1806) to explore the new west. His second term was beset with troubles at home, such as the failed treason trial of his former Vice President Aaron Burr. With escalating trouble with Britain who was challenging American neutrality and threatening shipping at sea, he tried economic warfare with his embargo laws which only damaged American trade. In 1803, President Jefferson initiated a process of Indian tribal removal and relocation to the Louisiana Territory west of the Mississippi River, in order to open lands for eventual American settlers.[2] A leader in the Enlightenment, Jefferson was a polymath who spoke five languages fluently and was deeply interested in science, invention, architecture, religion and philosophy, interests that led him to the founding of the University of Virginia after his presidency. He designed his own large mansion on a 5,000 acre plantation near Charlottesville, Virginia, which he named Monticello. While not a notable orator, Jefferson was a skilled writer and corresponded with many influential people in America and Europe throughout his adult life.[3] He is rated by historians as one of the greatest U.S. presidents.[4][5] Though Jefferson owned many slaves, he opposed the institution all his life and consequently treated and took care of his slaves very well, expecting them to work no more than free farmers. Since 1802 historians and others have been divided over the controversy of whether Jefferson was the father of one or more children belonging to Sally Hemings, a slave at Monticello. Historians are also in disagreement with how much Jefferson was committed to the anti-slavery cause. In 1807, President Jefferson signed into law a bill that banned the importation of slaves into the United States. After Martha Jefferson, his wife of eleven years, died in 1782, Jefferson remained a widower for the rest of his life; their marriage produced six children, of whom two survived to adulthood. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Jefferson- published: 07 Oct 2013

At least 90 people were injured. The anti-government protests that began two days ago in the northern city of Tuzla spread throughout Bosnia, with thousands taking their discontent over the almost 40 percent unemployment rate onto the streets of a dozen cities. In Tuzla, the crowd stormed the local government building, throwing furniture, files and papers out of the windows and then setting the building on fire. Protesters also set local government buildings ablaze in Sarajevo and Zenica, and the building of the Bosnian Presidency was also burning. Those fires were promptly put out but almost all the windows were broken. At least 80 people were injured in Sarajevo and 10 in Zenica, authorities said. There were no immediate casualty figures from Tuzla, where the worst of the fighting was. In an unprecedented move, hundreds gathered in the capital of the Bosnian Serb part of the country, Banja Luka, to express support for protesters in the countrys other ministate, which is shared by Bosniaks and Croats. We gathered to support the protests in Tuzla where people are fighting for their rights, said Aleksandar Zolja, an activist from Banja Luka. The protests began on Wednesday with a clash between police and unpaid workers of four former state-owned companies, which left some some 130 hurt, mostly from tear gas. The four companies employed most of the population of Tuzla. When they were privatized, contracts obliged the new owners to invest in them and make them profitable but they sold the assets, stopped paying workers and filed for bankruptcy. Bosnians have many reasons to be unhappy as general elections approach in October. Beside the unemployment rate, the privatization that followed the end of communism and the 1992-95 war produced a handful of tycoons, almost wiped out the middle class and sent the working class into poverty. Corruption is widespread and high taxes to fund a bloated public sector eat away at paychecks. ============================================= Violent protests spread throughout Bosnia Violent protests break out in Bosnia-Hercegovina Bosnia Protests , Bosnia Demonstrations , Bosnia , Bosnia Unrest , Bosnia Presidential Palace , World News,Thousands of people across Bosnia set fire to local government buildings and clashed with police.
