Neum (pronounced [neum], Serbian Cyrillic: Неум) is the only coastal town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It comprises 24.5 km (15 mi) of coastline, the country's only access to the Adriatic Sea. As of 2009, municipal (općina) population was of 4,605 and the one of Neum main town (naselje) was of 4,268 (in 1991).
Neum has steep hills, sandy beaches, and several large tourist hotels. Prices tend to be lower than in neighboring Croatia, making it popular with shoppers. Tourism, and the commerce it brings, is the leading contributor to the economy of the area. Border formalities with Croatia are relaxed at peak times. Neum has around 5,000 beds for tourists, 1,810 in hotels with the remaining capacity in motels, villas, and in private accommodation. Tourism in Neum is active only in the coastal region. The inland area behind Neum has a rich archeological history and untouched wilderness and is starting to develop agricultural tourism.
Neum is 60 kilometers (37 mi) from Dubrovnik (80 km/50 mi from the Dubrovnik Airport), 70 km (43 mi) from Mostar and Međugorje and 30 km (19 mi) from Ploče and Metković, both of which have railway stations.

Neum is the only coastal town in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Around it there is 24.5 km (15.23 miles) of coastline which is the only access of this country to the Adriatic Sea. It is located in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina entity.

What to See & Eat in Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina
http://davidsbeenhere.com In this episode David takes us to the capital city of Bosnia and Herzegovina to discover Sarajevo’s sights, sounds, and tastes. Sarajevo is a bustling capital with several historical, cultural and gastronomic stops to experience.
David starts off in the city center where he meets up with his local guide Raza to begin the tour. The best place to start is the Eternal Flame, located in the city center. It has burned continuously since 1946 except during the Bosnian War 1992-1995. It is on display for everyone to see.
David and Raza then take a walk along Ferhadija, Sarajevo’s main pedestrian street that links the two different parts of the city – the 19th century buildings dating back to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Medieval district dating back to Ottoman occupation. In the mix there are also several communist-era buildings when Bosnia existed as a republic in the Social Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (Yugoslavia, for short).
At the point when Ferhadija Street meets the Ottoman quarter, there is line on the floor that shows the split. All along Ferhadija Street there are shops, restaurants, cafés, and banks. It is also where the Eternal Flame is located.
Before Raza and David head into Bascarsija (Ottoman district), they make a quick stop at the square of the Sacred Heart Cathedral. In Bascarsija they visit the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, which was built 1530. Afterwards, Raza shows David the different ways to drink a traditional Bosnian coffee at a local Kafana. After fueling up, David stops by Sebilj fountain to have a sip of water. Legend has it that anyone who drinks from the fountain will return to Sarajevo, so we’ll see if David makes his way back one day to experience more of what to see and eat in Sarajevo!
Now time for a little souvenir shopping down Coppersmith Street. Raza shows David the most typical gift one could buy here – a copper coffee pot used to serve Bosnian coffee. All this walking around made them work up quite an appetite, so they head to a bakery to try some delicious pies (cheese, spinach, and meat). The pies are baked over a coal oven and are the perfect fast food. They are also very inexpensive.
Next thing David tries is cevapi (pronounced che-vap-ee), which is pretty much the unofficial national dish of the country. Day 2 takes David and Raza to see the city from a magnificent lookout point, Zuta Tabija, or “yellow fortress.” David recommends driving or taking a taxi there because the climb to the top is quite steep. From here you can see the center of the city and the rolling green hills in the background (in case you didn’t know, Bosnia is one of Europe’s most lush and verdant countries).
After quickly seeing Emperor’s Mosque, Raza takes David to see the exact spot where Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie, were assassinated on June 28, 1914. At the time David visited (2014) it was the 100th year anniversary of their untimely deaths. The assassination triggered the start of the First World War. After revisiting such a pivotal point in European history, David gets curious to see where all the bread he’s been eating comes from so Raza takes him to a nearby bakery, Pekara Alifakovac. They specialize in Somun bread, which is what is served with cevapi. This family-owned bakery churns out hundreds of Somun breads each day, and they have a pick-up window for customers on the go. It’s very hot inside but the experience was well worth it, especially since they allowed David to eat a piece of freshly baked bread.
Last but not least, David heads outside of the city center to visit one of the most culturally significant places in Bosnia, the Sarajevo Tunnel or Tunnel of Hope. Visitors can now see a portion of a tunnel that allowed Bosnians to smuggle in weapons and supplies during the Siege of Sarajevo (May 1992 through November 1995).

Disposal of waste from the municipality of Ston, Orebic and Ioannina, from the Peljesac peninsula to dump depot in the area of Neum will be continued. So she decided to Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina after having considered and approved the information of the Federal Administration for Inspection of waste disposal from the Croatian to the municipality Neum.
The item says that the urban-environmental inspection found that the dumping of waste from the area of the three municipalities of the Republic of Croatia to dump depot performed under a contract between the Municipal Company "Neum" and these municipalities. That type of waste disposal is carried out for a number of years, a municipality Neum is concerned that this continues in the future due to financial reasons. Otherwise, from Ston, Orebic and Ioannina daily at the dump brought around two to three trucks of waste.
Remember, the whole story and the media campaign on the disposal of garbage at the Bosnian Croatian territory began back in early May last year when a Roma family during the screening of garbage to the landfill depot found the dead newborn. How then launched a police action seeking mothers of newborn general public has learned that in this dump daily in BiH bringing garbage from Peljesac municipalities and that the bag with a dead newborn arrived from there. With the search for the mother, is open to the question of why the only way out of BH-sea trash from Croatia, and the federal government ordered that the case thoroughly investigated.
A review of the landfill depot inspection has identified irregularities in terms of meeting the conditions for its operation, such as the lack of protective fencing, detour, its irregular filling, and so on. In this respect, from the federal government sent requests inspection of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton to that situation was removed.
Agreement between the Council of Ministers and the Government of the joint financing and maintenance of regional drainage system Komarna -Neum - Mljet channel prescribed by the mutual rights, obligations and responsibilities without highlighting reciprocity for disposal of waste from the Republic of Croatia in the area of Neum. The FBiH government will send a request heads of delegations of the Permanent Joint Commission between the Republic of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina to find a solution for this problem. At the same time, the government recommended the relevant state institutions to take the necessary measures within its competence, and the relevant ministries to continue to monitor the situation with regard to waste disposal in Neum and at least quarterly on how to inform the government.

What to See & Do in Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina
http://davidsbeenhere.com David’s Been Here takes you to Bosnia and Herzegovina to discover what to see and do in the beautiful city of Mostar. The city is well known in the Balkans for its impressive Ottoman-era architecture and laid-back atmosphere. When there aren’t tourists, the old part of the city is ideal for strolling, shopping, and sipping coffee at a local kafana (coffee shop).
David and his friend Sasha spend 2 days exploring Mostar. Their first stop is also the most popular attraction in town – the 16th century Stari Most Bridge (means “Old Bridge”). Sasha explains a little bit about Stari Most’s history and how you can watch the world-famous Mostari Dive Club members do the death-defying jump into the freezing Neretva River below.
David and Sasha then make a quick stop at the Crooked Bridge, which was used as a trial run before the Ottomans built Stari Most. Afterwards David is able to capture two different jumps off Stari Most, which is exciting since tourists don’t always scrounge up enough to pay the divers the 25-euro fee to jump for the crowd. It may seem fun and games, but it is actually quite dangerous! Sasha explains that anyone can jump but they must first get training from a member of the dive club.
Then onto the Biscevica House, a beautiful 17th century Turkish home that holds a great deal of folk art and features traditional architecture. It was built in 1637 and has been in the same family for the past 4 generations. The most intriguing architectural feature of the Biscevica House is the sitting room supported by only 2 exterior pillars. Biscevica House is a museum, so anyone can visit. Other beautiful features include the hand-carved wood and copper works.
Onto the next stop, which is the Muslibegovic House, another 17th century Turkish house that currently serves as a museum/ hotel. In 2010, Expedia.com readers voted the Muslibegovic House 8th best hotel in the world.
David then heads to Koski-Mehmed Pasha Mosque to go up to the top of its minaret for bird’s eye views of Mostar and the iconic Stari Most Bridge. Sasha then takes David to another beautiful building in Mostar, the Karadjoz Bey Mosque. It dates back to 1556 and was built by the Ottomans. This is actually one of the largest Mosques in the country.

Built in the year 1682 by the Ottomans, this historic bridge was destroyed by the Germans in 1945 and then reconstructed in 2009. One of the best examples of Ottoman architecture in all of Bosnia & Herzegovina, this bridge is well worth a visit if you’re driving from the capital city of Sarajevo to the southern city of Mostar. Mostar is a city and municipality in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Inhabited by 113,169 people, it is one of the most important cities in the Herzegovina region, its cultural capital and the center of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton of the Federation. Mostar is situated on the Neretva River and is the fifth-largest city in the country. Mostar was named after the bridge keepers (natively: mostari) who in the medieval times guarded the Stari Most (Old Bridge) over the Neretva. The Old Bridge, built by the Ottomans in the 16th century, is one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's most recognizable landmarks, and is considered one of the most exemplary pieces of Islamic architecture in the Balkans.
History
Human settlements on the river Neretva, between the Hum Hill and the Velež Mountain, have existed since prehistory, as witnessed by discoveries of fortified enceintes and cemeteries. Evidence of Roman occupation was discovered beneath the present town.
As far as medieval Mostar goes, although the Christian basilicas of late antiquity remained in use, few historical sources were preserved and not much is known about this period. The name of Mostar was first mentioned in a document dating from 1474, taking its name from the bridge-keepers (mostari); this refers to the existence of a wooden bridge from the market on the left bank of the river which was used by traders, soldiers, and other travelers. During this time it was also the seat of a kadiluk (district with a regional judge). Since Mostar was on the trade route between the Adriatic and the mineral-rich regions of central Bosnia, the settlement began to spread to the right bank of the river.
However, prior to the 1474 the names of two towns appear in medieval historical sources, along with their later medieval territories and properties -- the towns of Nebojša and Cimski grad. In the early 15th century the late medieval county of Večenike covered the site of the present-day Mostar along the right bank of the Neretva: Zahum, Cim, Ilići, Hraštani and Vojno. It was at the center of this area, which in 1408 belonged to the Radivojević's, that Cim fort was built (prior to 1443). Mostar is indirectly referred to in a charter of King Alfonso V of Aragon dating from 1454 as Pons (Bridge), for a bridge had already been built there. Prior to 1444, the Nebojša fort was built on the left bank of the Neretva, which belonged to the late medieval county still known as Večenike or Večerić. The earliest documentary reference to Mostar as a settlement dates from April 3, 1452, when natives of Dubrovnik wrote to their fellow countrymen in the service of Đorđe Branković to say that Vladislav Hercegović had turned against his father and occupied the town called Blagaj and other places, including "Duo Castelli al ponte de Neretua.".

Photographer Wade Goddard, from New Zealand, witnessed the war's suffering and then the transition. He has made Croatia his home.
Goddard said: "A lot of the population already moved on. There are of course a few people who have lost so much and the war has affected them so badly that they aren't able to move on. I think that is true in any war. I am hoping that joining the European Union will not be as disastrous for us as it has been for perhaps Greece or Portugal or Spain. Italy is having trouble, Ireland has been going through hell."
In contrast with the photographer's opinion, however, many countries benefited from massive EU solidarity funding, including poor parts of Italy. Croatia hopes to reduce or avoid problems that many people say stemmed from public and private financial policies and the euro. Its economy is in recession like many, with high unemployment. The EU may expand options.
Jany Hansel, with the humanitarian organisation DESA, said: "Germany needs foreign workers and they are looking for Croatian workers. So, they know their abilities and they are [actively seeking] them."
Croatia's outer border will become an EU periphery. EU funds can also help with infrastructure, for example to cross the "Neum corridor", a strip of Bosnian territory along the sea near Dubrovnik - a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site.
Nikola Dobroslavic, Prefect of Dubrovnik-Neretva County, said: "We want to build a bridge which will connect the two parts of Croatia - but tomorrow, also, from 1 July, two parts of the EU."
Euronews correspondent Isabel Marques da Silva said: "The European Union is a political project promoting peace. But Croatia also sees it as a trampoline for modernising the economy. Through a decade-long reform process, Brussels considered the level of European funding for the country. By 2020, it will have received some 14 billion euros."
Students have been able to move freely within the EU under the Erasmus mobility programme in the last two years. Now new prospects at home may tempt them.
Nikolina Potrebica, an Erasmus coordinator with the University of Dubrovnik, said: "I hope that not only our students and young people will go to Europe but that Croatia will open for foreign investment, and that some companies will open in Croatia. In that way, they can stay in their own country and work."
Petra Cehic, a student in communications, who has spent time in Austria, said: "I learned a lot that I can use today, not only in the profession that I will be working one day, hopefully, but also I gained new knowledge about the economy and it's helpful now that I am working in tourism."
With its geographic and historical assets, Croatia has great tourism potential. Other countries have suffered from instability, such as the Arab Spring, while Croatia has gained. But now it has to integrate EU requirements.
Marina Kristicevic with the Dubrovnik Tourist Guide Association said: "We have an increase of tourists from Turkey, Ukraine and Russia. Starting from 1 July, they will be required to have a visa, which was not the case until now. So, we still don't know how much this is going to affect the market... whether the number of tourists from those countries will diminish or not."
Per capita wealth in Croatia is 60 percent of the EU average. The population of 4.3 million faces challenges far different from the past, as today even rich partners are tackling austerity.
"The golden age of the European Union has already passed. [It was] during the 1970s and 80s. Now we have a lot of crises. And not only in Spain, Portugal, Italy and specially Greece. Sophisticated countries like Sweden, Denmark, Germany also have problems."
Impossible to ignore with its painful recent past, Croatia needed to meet human rights criteria to join the EU. It is s expected that financial convergence to become a member of the euro zone in a climate of uncertainty will also require perseverance.
