Datsun
India launched its entry-level hatchback redi-GO priced between Rs 2.38 lakh and Rs 3.34 lakh (ex-showroom
Delhi), raising the competition in the entry-level segment, ruled by
Maruti Suzuki Alto and its latest challenger, the
Renault Kwid.
The redi-Go has been priced at Rs
2.39 lakh(ex-showroom,
New Delhi), with the top-of-the-line variant costing Rs 3.34 lakh(ex-showroom, New Delhi).
The small car is based on the same CMF-A platform as its
Renault cousin, Kwid that has proved to be a raging success in the country. However, it sports a tall-boy design as opposed to the Kwid's squatting
SUV stance.
Datsun's initial run in the domestic car market started with the GO and GO+ but it could never truly cement its place in the market.
The launch of the redi-Go is a do-over for Datsun, a new attempt to capture a part of the most-selling small car segment in
India.
Bookings for the redi-GO began on April 29 and the company said the deliveries have started immediately with the launch.
The redi-GO is based on the Renault-Nissan’s
Common Module Family Architecture (CMF-A), which also underpins the Kwid.
The redi-GO utilises the CMF-A platform, one that also underpins the Renault Kwid and was first shown at
Auto Expo 2014.
The redi-Go has a tall-boy stance and measures 3429 mm in length, 1560 mm in width, and 1541 mm in height.
The wheelbase is
2348 mm long and the redi-Go has a segment-leading ground clearance of 185 mm.
Power :
The redi-GO has a 0.8-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that features iSAT (Intelligent
Spark Automated
Technology).
It has a power output of 53 bhp and 72 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Datsun has claimed a fuel economy of 25.17 kmpl.
The near future could see the redi-GO get an
AMT gearbox also.
Variants :
The car will be available in five different body colours.
Datsun has brought redi-GO in five colours –
Lime,
White,
Ruby, Silver and
Grey – and five variants –
D, A,
T, T (O) and S.
While only the top three variants – T, T (O) and S – get a power steering,
T (O) and S come with front power windows, and only the top-of-the-line S gets a driver airbag. This puts everyone else on board vulnerable to any crash to the maximum level.
The safety norms in India are still in a boiler and the crash-test reports by
Global NCAP released on May 17 had very little impact on car sales in the country. But the coming of more such “unsafe” cars in India puts the buyers and ultimately the occupants of the cars to a big risk.
Prices
List :

S 3,34,399
All prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi.
After two rather unsuccessful previous attempts at luring
Indian markets with the GO and GO+, Datsun is aspiring to get third time lucky with the redi-GO.
Engine :
Powered by a three-cylinder, 800cc i-SAT petrol engine, which also does the duty on the Kwid, the redi-GO will deliver 54PS power and 72Nm torque to the wheels. As per
Automotive Research Association of India (
ARAI), the redi-GO will run 25.17kmpl.
Datsun India says the redi-GO will clock
100 kmph in 15.9 seconds and can achieve a top speed of
140 kmph.
Design :
The car has a familiar Datsun grille on the front, which looks more powerful in this “urban-cross”. The flowlines are much similar to the rival
Hyundai Eon from the front and along the side profile. However, the shape of the boot lid disappoints.
The top-of-the-line model will go up till Rs 3.34 (both prices ex-showroom Delhi).
