A 3:00a wake-up at the Ibex Hotel in Padum to finish packing then out in the chill of morning to wait for our crew. Into a new jeep carrying less gear with packed breakfast and lunch made by cook Baikaji.
This 4x4 had tires that were beyond pitiful. Bald, spare had chunks of tread missing! How long would these tires last? Surely not all the way to Kargil!

Frozen over town of Padum in Zanskar! We had to helicopter in from Manali to get you this winter view from the headquarters of Zaskar in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The only way of reaching Padum in winter is by helicopter or on foot up the frozen Zanskar river.
The Zanskar River is a north-flowing tributary of the Indus. In its upper reaches, the Zanskar has two main branches. First of these, the Doda, has its source near the Pensi-la 4,400 m (14,400 ft) mountain-pass and flows south-eastwards along the main Zanskar valley leading towards Padum, the capital of Zanskar. The second branch is formed by two main tributaries known as Kargyag river, with its source near the Shingo La 5,091 m (16,703 ft), and Tsarap river, with its source near the Baralacha-La. These two rivers unite below the village of Purne to form the Lungnak river (also known as the Lingti or Tsarap). The Lungnak river then flows north-westwards along a narrow gorge towards Zanskar's central valley (known locally as gzhung khor), where it unites with the Doda river to form the main Zanskar river. This river then takes a north-eastern course through the dramatic Zanskar Gorge until it joins the Indus near Nimmu in Ladakh.
Padum (also spelled Padam) is the largest town and administrative centre of Zanskar District of Kargil district in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is 240 km away from Kargil with a population of about 1,000 people. Padum is in the centre of Zanskar with an average elevation of 3,669 metres (12,037 feet). There are several small villages around Padum. The traditional heart of the village is below the gompa where two large chortens stand above old buildings. A road was constructed in 1980 from Kargil across Pensi La. Padum has several hotels and restaurants meant for tourists. Padum has a post office, internet cafes and telephone booths. Padum is largely inhabited by people of Tibetan descent who follow Tibetan Buddhism, but there is a sizable Muslim minority (accounting for ~40% of the town's population), mainly Balti, who have been present in Padum since the 17th century. A mosque was built in Padum in recent years to cater the local Muslim population.

Padum
Padum is named after Padmasambhava. It is the only town and administrative centre in Zanskar. It was historically one of the two main capitals of the Zanskar Kingdom, the other being Zangla. It is 240 km away via the link road from Kargil town (National Highway No. 01D).
Description
The population of Padum is about 1,000 people. The traditional heart of the village is below the gompa and Palace khar (now in ruins) where two large chortens stand above old buildings. A road was constructed in 1980 from NH1, Kargil over Pensi La while the road to Darcha is yet half way through. Padum has several hotels, homestays and restaurants meant for tourists. Padum has a post office, internet cafes and telephone booths.
Geography
Padum is at the centre of the tri armed Zanskar valley. It has an average elevation of 3,657 metres (11,998 feet). There are several villages to the north-east of Padum leading to Karsha monastery.
People
Padum is largely inhabited by people of Tibetan descent who follow Tibetan Buddhism, but there is a sizable Muslim minority (accounting for ~40% of the town's population), mainly Balti, who have been present in Padum since the 17th century.

The Zanskar River is a north-flowing tributary of the Indus. In its upper reaches, the Zanskar has two main branches. First of these, the Doda, has its source near the Pensi-la 4,400 m (14,400 ft) mountain-pass and flows south-eastwards along the main Zanskar valley leading towards Padum, the capital of Zanskar. The second branch is formed by two main tributaries known as Kargyag river, with its source near the Shingo La 5,091 m (16,703 ft), and Tsarap river, with its source near the Baralacha-La. These two rivers unite below the village of Purne to form the Lungnak river (also known as the Lingti or Tsarap). The Lungnak river then flows north-westwards along a narrow gorge towards Zanskar's central valley (known locally as gzhung khor), where it unites with the Doda river to form the main Zanskar river. This river then takes a north-eastern course through the dramatic Zanskar Gorge until it joins the Indus near Nimmu in Ladakh.
Padum (also spelled Padam) is the largest town and administrative centre of Zanskar District of Kargil district in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is 240 km away from Kargil with a population of about 1,000 people. Padum is in the centre of Zanskar with an average elevation of 3,669 metres (12,037 feet). There are several small villages around Padum. The traditional heart of the village is below the gompa where two large chortens stand above old buildings. A road was constructed in 1980 from Kargil across Pensi La. Padum has several hotels and restaurants meant for tourists. Padum has a post office, internet cafes and telephone booths. Padum is largely inhabited by people of Tibetan descent who follow Tibetan Buddhism, but there is a sizable Muslim minority (accounting for ~40% of the town's population), mainly Balti, who have been present in Padum since the 17th century. A mosque was built in Padum in recent years to cater the local Muslim population.

Amazing Penzi-la Pass at 14,000' on Kargil - Padum Road, Zanskar, Ladakh
Among the high altitude mountain passes I have seen in Ladakh, Penzi-la pass is the most appealing. In early summer 2nd June, the entire place was frozen and had a beauty of its own. Surrounding hills splattered with snow looked majestic. The Statso / Langtso lake was frozen with periphery giving it a profile. The snow-melt freezing because of sub zero temperature during maximum time of the day, presented a unique nature's creation - the ice ripples. Not many pics and videos are seen in google search for ice ripples. There is a definite road that takes to the valley but the drive isn't for the faint hearted - it is a dusky road where you can drive at less than 20 kmph. you will see many glimpse of the mighty Indus river while driving. This is where the famous Chadar trek happens in the winter. where you walk on the frozen Zanskar and the Indus rivers.

Situated in the Himalayan range, Zanskar is popular with adventure junkies. A hotspot for trekking, paragliding and river rafting, Lamayuru to Darcha and Lamayuru-Padum are some of the popular trekking trails that pass around Zanskar. Treks to Markha Valley and Khangri begin from Zanskar. A unique trek that offered here is one on frozen water.
Housing a large population of Tibetan Buddhists, the daily life of Zanskar revolves around monks and Buddhist monasteries. While the locals generally speak in Zanskari, they are also fluent in Hindi, Ladakhi and Urdu. Some of them also speak in Tibetan and English.
Zongkhul, on the Padum-Kistwar trekking trail is famous for its beautiful cave monasteries and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Zanskar. Home to the Gelukpa monks, the Stongdey monastery, the second largest Buddhist shrine in Zanskar is another tourist favorite.
The Drang-Drung Glacier is one of the biggest glaciers of the country and offers picturesque views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks. A winding river of ice, the glacier can be seen from Pensi La and the trek to it from Padum is one every trekker worth his salt must take. Trainers and paragliding equipment are available in Zanskar.
One of the most challenging gorges in the world, rafting in the Zanskar river is a dangerous but an exciting activity. Rafting trips on this route can take up to 12 days and camping on the banks of the river at night is almost as exciting as the rafting itself. However, since the water in the river is almost always cold, it is advisable to wear a wet suit while rafting.

Majestically rugged, the greatest attraction of this mountain-hemmed Ladakhi-Buddhist valley is simply getting there, preferably on a trek. While days can be scorching hot, come prepared for cold nights even in summer. Until the Wanla–Photoksar road is extended to Zangla, the only motorable road in is from Kargil into the glorious Suru Valley, then a rough track to isolated Buddhist Rangdum and across the 4401m Pensi La.

Majestically rugged, the greatest attraction of this mountain-hemmed Ladakhi-Buddhist valley is simply getting there, preferably on a trek. While days can be scorching hot, come prepared for cold nights even in summer. Until the Wanla–Photoksar road is extended to Zangla, the only motorable road in is from Kargil into the glorious Suru Valley, then a rough track to isolated Buddhist Rangdum and across the 4401m Pensi La.

Surrounding hills splattered with snow looked majestic. The Statso / Langtso lake was frozen with periphery giving it a profile. The snow-melt freezing because of sub zero temperature during maximum time of the day, presented a unique nature's creation - the ice ripples. Frozen over town of Padum in Zanskar! We had to helicopter in from Manali to get you this winter view from the headquarters of Zaskar in Jammu and Kashmir, India. The only way of reaching Padum in winter is by helicopter or on foot up the frozen Zanskar river.
The Zanskar River is a north-flowing tributary of the Indus. In its upper reaches, the Zanskar has two main branches. First of these, the Doda, has its source near the Pensi-la 4,400 m (14,400 ft) mountain-pass and flows south-eastwards along the main Zanskar valley leading towards Padum, the capital of Zanskar. The second branch is formed by two main tributaries known as Kargyag river, with its source near the Shingo La 5,091 m (16,703 ft), and Tsarap river, with its source near the Baralacha-La. These two rivers unite below the village of Purne to form the Lungnak river (also known as the Lingti or Tsarap). The Lungnak river then flows north-westwards along a narrow gorge towards Zanskar's central valley (known locally as gzhung khor), where it unites with the Doda river to form the main Zanskar river. This river then takes a north-eastern course through the dramatic Zanskar Gorge until it joins the Indus near Nimmu in Ladakh.
Padum (also spelled Padam) is the largest town and administrative centre of Zanskar District of Kargil district in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is 240 km away from Kargil with a population of about 1,000 people. Padum is in the centre of Zanskar with an average elevation of 3,669 metres (12,037 feet). There are several small villages around Padum. The traditional heart of the village is below the gompa where two large chortens stand above old buildings. A road was constructed in 1980 from Kargil across Pensi La. Padum has several hotels and restaurants meant for tourists. Padum has a post office, internet cafes and telephone booths. Padum is largely inhabited by people of Tibetan descent who follow Tibetan Buddhism, but there is a sizable Muslim minority (accounting for ~40% of the town's population), mainly Balti, who have been present in Padum since the 17th century. A mosque was built in Padum in recent years to cater the local Muslim population.

The distance between Keylong to Darcha via Leh - Manali highway in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh is 29 Kms approximately. It takes around one hour to reach Darcha from Keylong in Himachal Pradesh.
Situated at an altitude of 3350 m, Keylong is the headquarters of Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. The region is strange, exciting, primitive mountainous and delightful. Rudyard Kipling said of the region "Surely the God live here this no place for men." The route to Lahaul takes a traveler over Rohtang Pass (3980 ml), Koksar (1st village of Lahaul) Sissu, Gondla and crossing the river Chandra Bhaga at Tandi.
By road the distance is 115 km from Manali, 188 km from Kaza, 373 km from Leh, 435 km from Chandigarh and 690 km from Delhi. Heavy winter snows cut off road connectivity to the region at Rohtang Pass for six months from November to June. Buses, Taxis are available from Manali in season. HPTDC also plies regular coaches to Leh via Keylong during July - September. Nearest airport is Bhunter, 175 km from Keylong.
Lahaul remains cut-off from outside the world till mid June due to heavy snowfall and closing of Rohtang Pass. There is little or no rain in monsoons. The climate remains dry and invigorating. The days are hot and nights are extremely cold. Heavy / Light woolens are recommended.
Darcha (elevation 3,360 m or 11,020 ft) is a village on the Bhaga River in Lahaul region in Lahaul and Spiti district in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is the northernmost permanent settlement in Himachal Pradesh along the Manali-Leh Highway. The Rough Guide to India describes it as "a lonely cluster of dry-stone huts and dingy tent camps".
The village has 65 households and a total population of 298, of which 152 are male and 146 are female. There are 2 residents belonging to scheduled castes and 222 belonging to scheduled tribes. schooling up to 10+2 is available in the village;there is a Primary Health Centre at Darcha. Drinking water is available, and the village has power and telephone connections.
Some buses between Manali and Leh stop for the night at Darcha where travelers sleep in tents. The village is the end-point of a popular trek beginning in Padum, Zanskar. Roadside stalls offer basic food.
All passing vehicles must stop at Darcha's police checkpoint for passport checks.
