Politics of India Political parties Elections |
Aam Aadmi Party is a political party in India. It was launched by anti-corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal on 26 November 2012 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi[1] after his movement with Anna Hazare dissipated in August 2012 with the government ignoring him.[2]

Arvind Kejriwal had split with Anna Hazare and launched his political party without giving out its name on 2 October 2012 [3] Anna Hazare and his associates, amongst whom Kiran Bedi has been prominent, objected to the political outfit.[4] A meeting of around 300 founding members was held at Constitution Club during which Arvind Kejriwal proposed the name of the party which was accepted by other members.[5]
There has been some criticism against the thinking behind naming the new party with "Aam Aadmi" especially by Indian National Congress leaders Digvijay Singh [6] and Manish Tewari.[7] Congress claimed that Kejriwal had "hijacked" the word Aam Aadmi from Congress as the Indian National Congress has been fighting elections in the name of Aam Aadmi. They have successfully used the slogan "Congress Ka Haath, Aam Aadmi Ke Saath" (Congress' hand, which is also is the party's election symbol, is with the common man).[8]
Arvind Kejriwal made a statement:-[9]
Congress could never hijack the aam aadmi despite using the term aam aadmi. Now they have lost the word too.
After years of oppression, inequality, injustice and unfulfilled promises; most people are tired of corruption. It is this frustration that gave rise to the vision of Aam Admi Party:[10]
AAP has promised to bring following changes once it is voted to power

On Dec 1, 2012 Aam Aadmi party had protested against the Station House Officer(SHO) of Narela Police station in New Delhi for not taking sufficient action against in an alleged rape case of 4 year girl child. Party workers were lathi charged while protesting.[14]
On Dec 3,2012 AAP released a black paper protesting against the white paper on Maharashtra Irrigation Scam brought out by the state government of Maharashtra . AAP criticized the white paper saying that it was “an attempt to absolve Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar of all the corruption charges against him.[15]
