Space plants playing synthesizers - bio-sonification of lunar regolith-grown plants
MIDI biodata sonification, or bio-sonification, is where sensor data from living organisms are translated into musical notes and controls. In the video, fluctuations in galvanic conductance in the plant leaves are converted into MIDI-data which is fed through a controller/sequencer and from there into various synthesizers. The input can be manipulated by stimulating the plant, for example by physical contact. The setup shown is the same as used in the recording, but the recording itself was done in the moments before the video, for reasons of practicality. Both drums and synthesizers were recorded live, and the equipment used is: -MIDI Biodata Sonification Device v2.1 (biodata processor) -Novation SL MK3 (controller/sequencer) -Waldorf Streichfett (string synthesizer) -Twisted Electrons ...

The "Science and Exploration of Phobos and Deimos" series was jointly organized and led by SSERVI teams at University of Central FL (CLASS) and Brown University/MIT (SEEED) with many SSERVI-affiliated institutions participating. A major goal was to identify major outstanding questions and scientific and exploration goals for robotic and human exploration of Phobos and Deimos. The 13 weekly seminars with lectures given by leaders in the field included opportunities for questions and discussion. The lectures were accessible through Adobe Connect in real-time and were recorded for on-line reference.

Filmed on 4 December at Hahei Beach on the Coromandel peninsular, New Zealand. I was watching a pod of orcas swimming up the beach, I saw a swimmer swimming along shore directly towards them, at this point I asked my partner to get my mobile phone as I wasn’t sure what would happen and I may have to call for help. The orcas circled her and she got quite the fright. She then got out the water as she was only 20m from shore. Some on lookers chatted to her about the experience and then to my surprise she got back into the water and swam back towards the pod, to I assume continue her training swim. I then launched the drone and filmed from a fair distance away making sure not to disturb the pod of orcas. What I witnessed was truly amazing.

In the video, fluctuations in galvanic conductance in the plant leaves are converted into MIDI-data which is fed through a controller/sequencer and from there into various synthesizers. The input can be manipulated by stimulating the plant, for example by physical contact.
The setup shown is the same as used in the recording, but the recording itself was done in the moments before the video, for reasons of practicality. Both drums and synthesizers were recorded live, and the equipment used is:
-MIDI Biodata Sonification Device v2.1 (biodata processor)
-Novation SL MK3 (controller/sequencer)
-Waldorf Streichfett (string synthesizer)
-Twisted Electrons MegaFM (FM synthesizer)
-Roland TR-8S (drum machine)
-1010Music Bluebox (mixer/recorder)
-MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru (MIDI splitter)
-GoPro Hero7 Black (video)
The plant, which can be seen at the start of the video, is a 5 week old Norwegian Brown Bean plant grown as an early experiment by Team MoonPlow Nordic in the Institute of Competitive Sciences 2021 Plant the Moon challenge, and is planted and thriving in a substrate of 100% Lunar Highland Regolith Simulant (LHS-1, by Exolith), suspended over aerated nutrient fluid in a hybrid hydroponic setup. All equipment such as containers, dividers, holders etc are produced by SolSys Mining AS using mainly PP, PETG and PLA 3D printing.
The timelapse part of the video shows the actual Plant The Moon Challenge Team MoonPlow Nordic experiment in it's early stages, where one part is drip-irrigated, and the other is wick-irrigated by various nutrient fluid setups. As you can see, growing in lunar regolith simulant is not easy, with many plants not making it through the germination stage. This is a first-time experiment for us, both in regards to the plants as well as the bio-sonification.
Team MoonPlow Nordic includes members from SolSys Mining AS in both Oslo and London, as well as students from NTNU (the Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology) led by CIRiS (Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Space) in Trondheim.

Filmed on 4 December at Hahei Beach on the Coromandel peninsular, New Zealand. I was watching a pod of orcas swimming up the beach, I saw a swimmer swimming along shore directly towards them, at this point I asked my partner to get my mobile phone as I wasn’t sure what would happen and I may have to call for help. The orcas circled her and she got quite the fright. She then got out the water as she was only 20m from shore. Some on lookers chatted to her about the experience and then to my surprise she got back into the water and swam back towards the pod, to I assume continue her training swim. I then launched the drone and filmed from a fair distance away making sure not to disturb the pod of orcas. What I witnessed was truly amazing.

MIDI biodata sonification, or bio-sonification, is where sensor data from living organisms are translated into musical notes and controls.
In the video, fluctuations in galvanic conductance in the plant leaves are converted into MIDI-data which is fed through a controller/sequencer and from there into various synthesizers. The input can be manipulated by stimulating the plant, for example by physical contact.
The setup shown is the same as used in the recording, but the recording itself was done in the moments before the video, for reasons of practicality. Both drums and synthesizers were recorded live, and the equipment used is:
-MIDI Biodata Sonification Device v2.1 (biodata processor)
-Novation SL MK3 (controller/sequencer)
-Waldorf Streichfett (string synthesizer)
-Twisted Electrons MegaFM (FM synthesizer)
-Roland TR-8S (drum machine)
-1010Music Bluebox (mixer/recorder)
-MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru (MIDI splitter)
-GoPro Hero7 Black (video)
The plant, which can be seen at the start of the video, is a 5 week old Norwegian Brown Bean plant grown as an early experiment by Team MoonPlow Nordic in the Institute of Competitive Sciences 2021 Plant the Moon challenge, and is planted and thriving in a substrate of 100% Lunar Highland Regolith Simulant (LHS-1, by Exolith), suspended over aerated nutrient fluid in a hybrid hydroponic setup. All equipment such as containers, dividers, holders etc are produced by SolSys Mining AS using mainly PP, PETG and PLA 3D printing.
The timelapse part of the video shows the actual Plant The Moon Challenge Team MoonPlow Nordic experiment in it's early stages, where one part is drip-irrigated, and the other is wick-irrigated by various nutrient fluid setups. As you can see, growing in lunar regolith simulant is not easy, with many plants not making it through the germination stage. This is a first-time experiment for us, both in regards to the plants as well as the bio-sonification.
Team MoonPlow Nordic includes members from SolSys Mining AS in both Oslo and London, as well as students from NTNU (the Norwegian Institute of Science and Technology) led by CIRiS (Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Space) in Trondheim.
