Pull back from the Church of the Annunciation to construction equipment STORYLINE: The tractors digging into the earth on a hillside overlooking Nazareth are one of many signs that this biblical city is preparing for an important visitor. Pope Benedict XVI is set to hold a mass for thousands on this spot known as Mount Precipice, where Christians believe a mob pursued Jesus and tried to throw him off a cliff. It was feared the Pope would receive a cool welcome from the people of Jesus's boyhood town and that tensions between Christians and Muslims might boil over as the Pope arrived. But religious leaders from the city have played down the tension, which ignited after a 2006 speech in which Benedict quoted a medieval text depicting the Prophet as violent. Worshippers say the Pope's visit is a chance for the two religions to affirm their kinship and their belief in the same God. Benedict plans to meet with Muslim leaders, throughout his 8 to 15 May tour of the Holy Land, which includes stops in Jordan, the West Bank, Jerusalem and Nazareth, one of Israel's largest Arab cities. But he will not meet with Nazem Abu Salim, a radical Muslim preacher, whose followers put up a banner condemning those who insult Islam's Prophet Muhammad right next to the Church of the Annunciation, where tradition says the Angel Gabriel told Mary she would give birth to Jesus. Islamic leaders in Israel are divided over the visit. One of the leading Muslim groups in Israel, the Northern Islamic Movement, is calling for a boycott of meetings unless Benedict apologises for his 2006 remarks, said a spokesman, Zahi Nujeidat. A decade ago, brawls erupted over Muslim attempts to build a mosque beside the Church of the Annunciation.
