2016 is the year of the Void King. Instantly a hit with fans interested in everything from hard rock to stoner doom, the four piece located near Indianapolis, Indiana have shown massive consistency while showcasing incredible performances with high caliber bands, such as Crowbar. They simply just label themselves as rock ‘n’ roll. They aren’t wrong, but there is so much more to be found within such a creative and modern band. Rich fuzzy tone, fat riffs and some of the best vocals I have heard in a long time, Void King makes for a very stimulating and exhilarating listen. Last year they released a stellar three track EP titled Zep Tepi. Now we see the release of their debut full length album There Is Nothing. Old school traditions of melody and composition married to new school grit and groove. The smooth vocal melodies in “Release The Hawks”, the crushing riffs in “Raise The Flags on Fire” and fascinating groovy rhythms in “DFI” all prove that this is a band full of potential to create something truly powerful. The six-and-a-half-minute track “Canyon Hammer” is everything you’ve come to expect from Void King and even more. The most intriguing quality of Void King is obviously Jason Kindred. In addition to an incredible stage presence he is vocally best described as somewhere between Glenn Danzig and Clutch frontman Neil Fallon. Whiskey smooth singing makes for both emotionally driven sentiments and powerful messages. Noticeably heavier than material from Zep Teti, we hear heavier and more metallic instrumentation on “Canyon Hammer.” Guitarist Tommy Miller creates crunching riffs and incredible vibrations with intense rhythm provided by Chris Carroll on bass and Derek Felix on drums. “Canyon Hammer” also shows that Void King possesses the musical intuition to keep things interesting. Never once does this track become predictable as plenty of time and key changes are subtly thrown in. The rest of the new songs follow suit with the same high quality riffs and powerful vocals.
