The mayor of Jersey City is very upset with the local school board for refusing to take a day off of school in order to celebrate a Muslim holiday. The city mayor is Steve Fulop and apparently he had a good relationship with the school board. After the school board decided they would not take this day off for a Muslim holiday he was very upset about it.

With many non-Muslims present at this "Islam Awareness Week" lecture in Miami, Abdullah Hakim Quick delivers an enlightening talk about the origins of the major holidays celebrated today. He explains that throughout time there has been a constant struggle between those who believe in one God and those who believe in many gods. And with these struggles, many compromises were made by those who would ultimately influence and shape the major modern day holidays celebrated throughout the world. The result today are rituals not sanctioned by the prophets or scriptures of God, but rather mixed-up beliefs and practices that, essentially, can be attributed to ancient pagan culture. An intellectual analysis of this controversial subject by a well-known Muslim-American historian. The major celebrations analyzed are Christmas, New Year's, Valentine's Day, Easter and Halloween. Other topics discussed: Muslim holidays, Thanksgiving, Kwanza, the Sabbath, celebrating birthdays, the origins of the Hajj, having non-Muslims as friends, dealing with holidays in public school, and pork being served at the school cafeteria. New York City mayor Bill DeBlasio announced Wednesday that kids citywide just scored two more days off the school calendar. New York City schools will now break for Eid al-Adha, on September 24 this year, and Eid al-Fitr, which is during summer school.
Former mayor Bloomberg-Scrooge opposed adding the holidays because it would make the school year shorter. But lucky for kids and their brains alike, public schools get two more holidays, and yet still have 182 days of class per year.
If the kids also manage to miss math class, they won't realize their total number of school days remains unchanged.
However, Lunar New Year, the traditional east Asian festival of being stuffed with food and then called "fat" by one's relatives, still doesn't get a day off, but they're working on it.
New York has around a million Muslim residents, and absenteeism has reached 30 percent on Muslim holidays in the past. The same is also true of the interdenominational festival of 4-20, but DeBlasio was strangely silent on the issue.

Muslim holidays
There are two official holidays in Islam: Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. Eid Al-Fitr is celebrated at the end of Ramadan (a month of fasting during daylight hours), and Muslims usually give zakat (charity) on the occasion. Eid Al-Adha is celebrated on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah and lasts for four days, during which Muslims usually sacrifice a sheep and distribute its meat in 3 parts: among family, friends, and the poor.
Both holidays occur on dates in the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, which is lunar, and thus their dates in the Gregorian calendar, which is solar, change each year. The Gregorian calendar is based on the orbital period of the Earth's revolution around the Sun, approximately 3651⁄4 days, while the Islamic calendar is based on the synodic period of the Moon's revolution around the Earth, approximately 291⁄2 days. The Islamic calendar alternates months of 29 and 30 days (which begin with the new moon). Twelve of these months constitute an Islamic year, which is 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year.

New York City mayor Bill DeBlasio announced Wednesday that kids citywide just scored two more days off the school calendar. New York City schools will now break for Eid al-Adha, on September 24 this year, and Eid al-Fitr, which is during summer school.
Former mayor Bloomberg-Scrooge opposed adding the holidays because it would make the school year shorter. But lucky for kids and their brains alike, public schools get two more holidays, and yet still have 182 days of class per year.
If the kids also manage to miss math class, they won't realize their total number of school days remains unchanged.
However, Lunar New Year, the traditional east Asian festival of being stuffed with food and then called "fat" by one's relatives, still doesn't get a day off, but they're working on it.
New York has around a million Muslim residents, and absenteeism has reached 30 percent on Muslim holidays in the past. The same is also true of the interdenominational festival of 4-20, but DeBlasio was strangely silent on the issue.

Florida's Muslim-American community condemns an arson attack on the mosque where the Orlando shooter occasionally worshipped and say they hope police will treat the incident as a hate crime.
Muslim-American leaders in Florida on Monday (September 12) condemned an arson attack on the local mosque where the Orlando shooter was said to have occasionally worshipped. The Islamic Center of Fort Pierce, where Omar Mateen, who committed the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history prayed, was badly damaged early Monday in an arson attack, investigators said. Law enforcement officers received reports of flames rising from the center, located about 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Orlando, at about 12:30 a.m. EDT (0630 GMT), St. Lucie County Sheriff's office said. No one was hurt. The attack occurred on one of the holiest Muslim holidays. Surveillance video showed a white or Hispanic man ride up to the mosque on a Harley Davidson-style motorcycle, officials said. The suspect got off the bike and approached the mosque carrying a bottle of liquid and papers moments before the blaze erupted. Mateen was killed by law enforcement officials after fatally shooting 49 people and wounding 53 others in a gay nightclub in Orlando in June.

Switzerland could face consequences, Italian officials warned Monday, after voters in the border canton of Ticino approved a referendum calling on authorities to grant preference to Swiss workers over foreigners in employment, The Associated Press reported.The referendum passed with 58 percent of Ticino voters approving of the measure – an outgrowth of the Swiss nationalist efforts to limit European Union workers in Switzerland....
